From Our Rector

July/August 2015

Time to dream and grow Our new PCC’s have just had their first meetings, at which we reflected on the role of the PCC. We begin a new year in which we feel encouraged to dream and grow.

God has blessed each one of you with gifts and skills and I want to encourage you and enable you to use your gifts for the mission of your church. So often people say “well no one asked me.”

Well I’M ASKING YOU NOW! As we seek to grow the work of the church here in Richmond we are relaunching, and in some cases, launching, teams that can focus on a particular area of the church’s work and ministry. Please look at these teams and pray how God wants you to use your God given gifts – which team would benefit from your skills and experience.

Children and Young People Team: Chair -Jane Callard.

This team is looking to develop how the church engages with children and young people in worship, activities, our links with schools etc. Do you have experience or a desire to work in this very important area of outreach? Perhaps you have some ideas which you have been bottling up for years. Contact Jane or speak to the Rector or one of the PCC who will put you in touch.

Communications Team: Chair -Sheila Harrisson.

This team is responsible for the magazine and website. It is currently working on the development of a new website. If you feel that you would like to be part of this team, or help it in some way, please contact Sheila or speak to the Rector or one of the PCC who will put you in touch.

Pastoral Team: Team Leader -Joan Plowman This team is a most important part of the church’s outreach, taking home communions, visiting the sick, the bereaved and the housebound. We are looking to further develop this much valued form of outreach which will need more visitors, street monitors etc. If this is something you feel able to be a part of in some way, please contact Joan Plowman 01748 822792 Worship Team: Chair – the Rector The remit of this team is to consider the worship pattern, both regular and one offs, and work with the Rector to establish and develop services and activities, always being aware of the needs of the whole parish. If this is something of which you feel you could be a part, please contact the Rector Estates Team: Chair – The Churchwardens This team is responsible for the day to day upkeep of the church building. In addition to the churhcwardens and the verger, we need some people who have building experience to be part of the team. If you feel that this is your area then contact the churchwardens.

Finance Team: Chair – Rebecca Simpson This team should have 4 members, including the Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer.

We do need someone with experience of accountancy and book keeping. If that is you then please contact Rebecca 07716608948 Mission Outreach Team.

The PCC is keen to develop the outreach of our church, clearly working with other teams. A parish church is there for the whole parish and we need to be going out in God’s name. We will be looking at this fundamental work of the church as we create a remit for this team. For example it may be advising on our outward giving and raising awareness of the church’s mission in Richmond and Hudswell. If you have ideas and/or would like to be a part of this new team, please speak to the Rector.

Charitable giving Following the APCM, the whole question of the church’s charitable giving was discussed at length by the PCC. The motion was passed unanimously that “The PCC commit our church to charitable giving.”

Several suggestions were made (special fundraising events, extra collections, thanksgiving services) and a sub-committee was chosen to look into the matter and report back, the members to be John Dickinson, Sheila Harrisson, Wendy Pritchard and Rebecca Simpson. They would value your thoughts and suggestions.

I have just returned from a two day Bishop’s Area Staff residential conference at Wydale Hall. Much of the time was spent looking at the development of the Ripon Episcopal area within the diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. During our final Eucharist we were introduced to a hymn we had not seen before. The words struck me as so right for us on our journey in the new diocese and as we seek to continue to grow. Remembering our mantra of “Dream dreams, trust in God and go for it”, perhaps we should adopt this hymn as our anthem for growth.

A DUST FREE ZONE???

Many of us have watched in amazement as the Baptistry has been transformed to accommodate the facility for the disabled. As we have passed through church on various working days we have seen the conscientious workmen taking particular care with the artefacts and structures.

However, church on Friday evening bore no resemblance to the church which welcomed us from 8 o'clock each Sunday. A transformation. I am sure we are all enormously grateful for the hard, grubby work carried out by our Churchwardens, Verger and colleagues. I understand that in total about seven people have maintained the standards during this project and we should like to offer our sincere thanks for carrying out the task so well. On Tuesday 30th June at 2pm in Greyfriars we will be welcoming the Diocesan President of the Mothers’ Union Ros Dobbin.

Cafe Church @ St Mary's Sunday 20th September sees the start of a brand new way of experiencing church at St Mary's. There will be excellent speakers with time for questions and discussion.

We'll sit around cafe style tables, enjoying tea, coffee and home baking. The 'Cafe Church' will happen bi-monthly at 4pm in St Mary's, and is aimed at everyone who would like to spend a relaxed and informal time of learning and fellowship together, finishing with the quiet service of compline.

We are delighted to welcome Bishop John Pritchard as our speaker for the first service on September 20th.

Bishop John retired as Bishop of Oxford at the end of last year, but continues with a teaching, preaching and writing ministry. His books include 'How to Pray', 'Living Jesus', 'God Lost and Found', 'The Journey' and 'The Intercessions Handbook'.

Our other speakers will include The Revd Janet Henderson, on 15th November who is a former Archdeacon of Richmond; The Revd David Day on 17th January 2016, who was principal of St John's College Durham before his retirement, and is one of the best preachers in the Church of England; and Bishop James Bell, on 20th March 2016 our own Bishop of Ripon.

This is a new service for St Mary's and we would love to welcome as many people as possible. Why not bring a friend? If you would like more information please speak to Gillian Lunn or Wendy Pritchard.

EXTRACT FROM SERMON GIVEN BY JOY HORNSBY ON SUNDAY 7TH JUNE 2015 GOD SPEAKS "A recent extract from Parish Pump, gave us 'The Bible in 50 words'. this seemed appropriate to our thoughts this morning...........God made Adam bit Noah arked Abraham split Joseph ruled Jacob fooled Bush talked Moses baulked Pharaoh plagued People walked Sea divided Tablets guided Promise landed Saul freaked David peaked Prophets warned Jesus born God walked Love talked Anger crucified Hope died Love rose Spirit flamed Word spread God remained At the time of each of these happenings GOD SPOKE He spoke to Adam. He spoke to Noah; he spoke to Abraham; to Joseph; Jacob; Moses And continuing through to Jesus himself; to Paul and the apostles.

In our readings, we have reflected on how the man and woman were spoken to by God, and their replies. We learnt how Jesus, speaking about his powers and their source confronted the scribes; then, more simply, spoke about his family, followed by some words which are perhaps more difficult for us : “Whoever does the will of God, is my brother and sister and mother” We find in our epistle the words by Paul: “We also believe and so we speak” Last week we were thinking about the meaning of the Trinity. Using that as my basis I BELIEVE:God speaks as Creator and Father.

God speaks as Son and Saviour God speaks as Spirit in the world today DO WE LISTEN? Amen.

It’s time to report on another busy half term at school and the start of the summer term is often dominated by the SATs (Statutory Assessment Tests) for the Year 6 children. This is quite a stressful time for them as they take the national tests in reading, maths, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

The children have worked hard all year building up to this and we know that they will have done their best. Quite a few children even did extra tests as they aim to achieve Level 6 (two levels above that which they are expected to achieve at this age). We are so proud of them! We have to wait for July for the results but the children are continuing to work towards the end of the year and prepare for the move to secondary school in September.

Not content with just the SATs, some Year 6 children (and some in Year 5) were chosen to take part in the local Junior Maths Challenge. This is a very demanding competition and entrance is by invitation only. We were delighted that a number of children received bronze, silver and gold awards and we were thrilled that the top scorer for the whole area came from our school! He will be going on to the next round. Watch this space!

Year 5 and Year 6 have been keeping busy with other events too. They all went out to Friary Gardens to take photographs of flowers which they later used in school for their art and science work on the theme of plants. They also took part in some dance workshops led by some of the older students at Richmond School.

The children in Year 1 and Year 2 also had a visit out this month to enhance their learning. They had had real success with a real life maths project earlier in the year - making and selling cakes - and decided to try another one. They went to visit the local travel agents to find out the information they needed to plan a holiday for their teachers! Miss McMain reports that the children were so well behaved and they had a fantastic morning out, full of learning and fun.

Foundation Stage 2 also had some learning out of the classroom with a visit to Monk Park Farm, finding out about all the animals.

Every term we run a number of after-school clubs and this term there’s been a choice of basketball, tennis, cricket, rounders, athletics, and dodge ball. These are always well attended and it’s great to have so much activity going on after school too.

For the start of the final half term our themes for Collective Worship are “wisdom” ( our Christian Value) and “improve” (our Secret of Success, an attitude to learning to work on). We began with the story of Solomon to inspire children to wisdom of their own.

In my final paragraph last month, I explained about our “Northern Lights” award for children who are constantly demonstrating excellence. I am pleased to report that we now have around 15 children with these awards, representing the pride they show in every way at school.

Keswick Convention, 2015 "The whole of life for Christ" is the theme for the 2015 Keswick Convention. Thousands will gather over the three weeks of the convention to consider the challenge of living holistically for Christ in workplaces, in free time, in communities, in homes and in public life. Sung worship over the three weeks will be led by Stuart Townend, Steve James and Lewis Green. Keswick Ministries has been running for 140 years.

FUN-KEY CHURCH @ ST MARY’S RICHMOND We met on the last Sunday of May and had a great afternoon exploring the theme of Called to Worship. During the service we looked at what it means to be called to worship. We were called to worship by our Town Crier Mr Barry Heap and we rang bells, went up the bell tower and dropped teddies with parachutes from the bell tower. We sang hymns said prayers and praised God by ringing our hand bells. We meet on the last Sunday of June when it will be our annual Pet Service then return on the last Sunday of August following a brief summer break.

We gather for refreshments from 3.40pm, made by Mothers Union, and the service will begin at 4pm. This service is very relaxed and informal, with words, songs, hymns, stories, crafts, prayers and refreshments available throughout.
