WHAT IF WE TOLD YOU...
WHAT IF WE TOLD YOU that behind every successful entrepreneur is a great teacher?
David Kim ’97
started a tutoring company in his Harvard University dorm room. C2 Education, the company he co-founded, now includes more than 180 centers nationwide and serves more than 10,000 students weekly. At Gilman, David worked on the Gilman News, was involved in the Asian Awareness Club, and spent three summers as a volunteer at St. Vincent’s Children’s Center. He traces his interest in the relationship between economics and education, and his passion for helping students reach their potential, back to his Gilman days.
“I remember so many teachers whose inspiration and guidance were instrumental in making me the man I am today. The idea of giving back to the community is a mantra and an ethos that I still carry with me. Photo courtesy of C2 Education
WHAT IF WE TOLD YOU that humility and gratitude off the field drive achievements on the field? Darius Jennings ’11
began his athletic career in a second grade P.E. class. An excellent student, Darius proved to be a natural leader at Gilman, leading hundreds of interscholastic athletes as the president of the Athletic Association. He was also a member of the Student Council and a mentor to Lower School boys. After a successful playing career at the University of Virginia, where he appeared in 49 games and finished with a record 1,839 career kick return yards, Darius was signed in 2015 by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent.
“Gilman helped me prepare for my future. I think I know who I am. I was raised to stay humble and to be thankful for what’s been given to me. In football, I know that there’s always someone better than I am. But I strive to be the best every day.” Photo courtesy of Cleveland Browns
WHAT IF WE TOLD YOU that honor and intellect lead to “Rhodes” unimagined?
Evan Behrle ’10
, the Penelope W. and E. Roe Stamps IV Jefferson Scholar at UVA and a Rhodes Scholar, credits Patrick Hastings for instructing him how to write, Dan Christian for instilling in him an understanding of the seriousness of life, Mike Kelly for teaching him how to engage in political discourse, and many more Gilman teachers who shaped his education. At Gilman he worked on the Cynosure staff and served as the Gilman News politics editor. Additionally he was a writing center consultant, helped plan the senior retreat, played tenor saxophone, and ran cross country and track. After he completes his studies in Oxford, Evan plans to return to Baltimore to work for the city, thus marrying his academic background with his Gilman-driven sense of duty to others.
“Gilman instilled in me a sense of duty. I think I (we) owe a lot to the world, and especially to a place like Baltimore. That notion has motivated my study of political philosophy, and it is what is motivating me to move back to Baltimore and work for the city.” Photo courtesy of Evan Behrle ’10
WHAT IF WE TOLD YOU that a Gilman education makes anything possible?
Derrick Wang ’02
, class valedictorian, is an ASCAP and BMI award-winning composer, lyricist, attorney, and interdisciplinary legal scholar connecting music and law to the wider world. He is the creator of the Supreme Court opera Scalia/Ginsburg , which is featured in Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s new book My Own Words (2016) and will be seen at The Glimmerglass Festival in August 2017. He holds an AB from Harvard, an MM from the Yale School of Music and a JD from the University of Maryland Carey School of Law. At Gilman, Derrick wrote the book, music, and lyrics for the spring musical, Prom, played piano for the Centennial Celebration, covered arts events for the Gilman News, and played varsity water polo.
“At Gilman, I learned to cultivate curiosity in the classroom, teamwork in the pool, and initiative on the stage, all without ever limiting myself to a single label. These qualities inform my work today as an interdisciplinary creator: whether I’m composing an opera in New York, researching constitutional law in D.C., or working with startup founders in Silicon Valley, I feel inspired and at home.” Photo by Matthew Fried Photography
