50TH REUNION class of 1971 50th reunion gift

The Class of 1971 is accustomed to being first and to setting the bar high for other classes. It started in the First Form, when the class got a day off from school for “winning the Circus” by selling the most Circus tickets of any class. They continued to win the Circus every year through the Sixth Form. They were the first class to have a Junior Room (doubtless to the dismay of the faculty.) They had the highest number of National Merit Semifinalists — 15 — in Gilman’s history to that date. They performed Gilman’s first Gilbert & Sullivan production in the Alumni Auditorium, wowing audiences with “The Mikado,” and went on to found Gilman Summer Theater (now Young Vic). The wrestling team set a new milestone by winning both the dual-meet competition and the M.S.A. tournament in the same season. Ed Merryman ran the fastest three miles ever recorded on Gilman’s new track. Needless to say, the class demonstrated its leadership early and often. And they did it again during their 50th reunion year, despite not being able to celebrate in person on campus. Two members of the class contributed $75,000 and challenged the class to raise another $75,000. With an impressive 86% participation rate, class members once again stepped up to demonstrate their leadership, contributing the largest gift ever raised by a 50th reunion class for the gilman fund in their reunion year. The final tally was $208,077, exceeding the original goal by 39%! The class’s generosity was especially welcome in a year that was defined by challenges. In total, including multi-year pledges and planned gifts, the Class raised an impressive $354,528. The Class of 1971’s 50th reunion committee was led by co-chairs Frank Fiske, Nigel Ogilvie, and Pete Waxter, with Buck Baker, Ben DuBois, Bill Gamper, George Gephart, Mike Hilliard, and Tom Lynn serving on the committee. Class of 1972, the challenge is on!
