TO DEVELOP THE COMPETENCE TO SEE AND THE COURAGE TO ACT IN CREATING A MORE HUMANE AND JUST SOCIETY.

OUR HOLY CROSS MISSION IS THE FOUNDATION FROM WHICH WE EDUCATE THE MIND AND EMPOWER THE HEART OF EVERY GILMOUR STUDENT.

DEAR FRIENDS,

We have such a beautiful campus here at Gilmour. Members of our community and visitors alike are welcomed and impressed.

I think back to the old Commons, that concrete bunker of a building. I have many wonderful memories from there, including breaking bread with friends and teachers and my very first date with my wife, Georgeanne, for Homecoming. But it had become cramped and far exceeded its useful life.

Now we have the new Howley Commons on the same but expanded footprint. If you were blindfolded and taken there, you would not believe you were in the same place. The seating, multiple food stations, and overall feel rivals most colleges.

I think back to having our Commencement ceremony in Tudor Garden, with the graduates up near Tudor House and family members seated down a few steps. Over time though, the garden fell into disrepair and disuse.

Now Tudor Garden has been resurrected and is grander than ever before. The stone walls have been brought back to life, new wrought iron is in place, and the statue of Mary greets all who stroll through. This wonderful outdoor space has already hosted weddings, the Homecoming dance, and, as of this letter writing, is preparing to host The Party of the Century gala.

These are but two examples of the amazing growth of our campus. If you have not been to campus in some time, I encourage you to visit. More memories are to be made, even if you become a little jealous in the process.

See you on campus soon!

DEAR FRIENDS,

After nearly two years of construction - between the Tudor House exterior and Tudor Garden renovation, the building of The Howley Commons and the Ice Center Improvement project - these projects are complete and our campus looks incredible!

It has been a great start to the school year. Our enrollment is currently at 803, which is an increase of 28 students from our record-breaking enrollment last year. And our students are engaged, in and out of the classroom. As I walk the campus, I see Middle and Upper Schoolers meeting in our new Howley Commons. I see students in the Encountering God Collective attending Mass together during Community Block. I see college counselors reviewing seniors’ applications with them before they hit submit. I see our Middle School Student Council working to plan their upcoming Kindness Initiative. And I see our Lower School students using their coding knowledge to design new nameplates for their teachers and print them on the 3D printers. These are just some of the things happening each day on campus.

Of course, none of this would be possible without you. Each time we have a need, you rise to the challenge and help us meet it and we are so grateful.

I am blessed to be surrounded by a community so wholly dedicated to our Holy Cross mission of educating both the minds and the hearts of our students. That looks different for each child, and your generosity allows us to provide the depth and breadth of opportunities that exist at Gilmour, in state-of-the-art facilities, with faculty and staff personalizing their experience every step of the way.

Your generosity is truly making a difference. Your continued support is both needed and appreciated.

May God bless you and all you love,

INTRODUCING OUR NEW CHIEF ADVANCEMENT AND OPERATIONS OFFICER

Upon the retirement of Patti Pfundstein Miller ’85, Ryan Ryzner was named Chief Advancement and Operations Officer, effective November 5.

Ryan served as our Chief Operating Officer since July 2023 and did an exceptional job in this role, providing tactical and strategic oversight management, and planning all aspects of the daily physical operation and maintenance of our campus and programs. He served as the owner's representative throughout our Tudor House, Howley Commons and Ice Center renovation projects, and oversaw the directors of facilities, transportation, ice arena operations, safety and security, as well as our food, housekeeping and landscaping services. Throughout his tenure, Ryan worked diligently to create efficiencies within each of these departments. With the construction projects complete and campus operations more streamlined, Ryan is able to absorb his current responsibilities within his new role as Chief Advancement and Operations Officer.

Prior to his role as COO, Ryan served as president and principal of Benedictine High School, his alma mater, from 2019-2023. He oversaw academics and the daily operations of the school as well as the athletic, finance, facilities and advancement departments. He managed a $6.9 million budget. He also raised an average

of $1.6 million for the Annual Fund during each of his years at Benedictine, raised $6 million for the school’s Centennial capital campaign and raised another $1 million for restricted capital projects outside the campaign. He established and maintained relationships with individuals, businesses, philanthropic organizations and institutions, and city and county officials.

Before his work at Benedictine, Ryan served at Gilmour from 2013-2019, during which he held a variety of roles, including associate director of the Upper School, director of the Middle School, assistant director of the Middle School, coordinator of the VECTOR program, English department chair, social studies instructor and faculty advisor.

Ryan will utilize his wealth of leadership, fundraising, strategic planning, classroom and budgeting experience in his new role. He shared, “This is my 25th year in Catholic education and my eighth at Gilmour. As a teacher and administrator, I have seen firsthand the profound impact this place has on people and I continue to be inspired by each and every facet of Gilmour Academy. I look forward to this new opportunity to advance the legacy of Holy Cross education that so many members of our Gilmour community have generously supported over the years.”

Philanthropy

IN FOCUS

Larry Kennedy’s ’66 life is a lesson in persistence. From sales to Santa Claus, “I work at 110 percent, and I play at a 100 percent,” Larry says. “The key to accomplishing something isn’t short bursts of productivity, but continuous, sustained effort and commitment.”

Larry’s continuous support for Gilmour Academy is not just a reflection of his personal success, but also a testament to his belief in the transformative power of education. After a 30-year career in pharmaceutical sales, for which he was inducted into Searle’s Hall of Fame, Larry transitioned into a life rich with varied experiences. From being a ski and golf instructor to spreading joy as a professional Santa Claus, Larry’s diverse roles highlight his love of life and passion for impacting others.

However, it is Larry’s deep commitment to philanthropy that underscores his values. Both Larry and Maryann, his wife of 44

years, have navigated significant personal health challenges. Their journey through these trials has only deepened their understanding of life’s values and the importance of giving back.

The impact of Larry’s and Maryann’s philanthropy extends deeply into many local institutions. They are currently endowing a chair at The Ohio State University School of Pharmacy, one at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, and one at CCF’s Cole Eye Institute. Additionally, they have funded two scholarships at The Ohio State University School of Pharmacy, one at Trine University School of Business, and one at Gilmour Academy. This support underscores their commitment to fostering education and research across multiple fields.

Their decision to endow a scholarship at Gilmour is rooted in Larry’s appreciation for

the school’s evolution. Reflecting on his own experience at Gilmour, Larry acknowledges that when he was a student, the primary goal was to “get you ready for college.” The focus was not on instilling a broader sense of purpose or community service. Today, Larry is inspired by how Gilmour has been transformed into an institution that “creates well-rounded human beings who can not just function, but thrive in the world.”

Larry’s vision for education aligns with Gilmour’s mission to produce graduates who are more than just college-ready— they are prepared to make a meaningful impact on society. “Students are now leaving as prepared adults, not just people ready to go to college. They are ready to enter the real world,” he says. This philosophy of developing well-rounded, service-oriented individuals is a key reason for Larry’s continued support.

Larry Kennedy ’66

When asked what more needs to be done at Gilmour, Larry emphasizes the importance of expanding opportunities for students. “Gilmour just needs to keep increasing the opportunities for students to explore different aspects of the human experience, from sports, to music, to service, to academic achievement.” His vision reflects a desire for Gilmour to continue its tradition of embracing change and growth, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive education that prepares them for all facets of life.

Larry’s and Maryann’s philanthropic efforts are also deeply personal. Maryann’s own journey began with a $400 scholarship that ultimately allowed her to attend The Ohio State University. This scholarship was pivotal not only in her education as a pharmacist, but also in shaping the couple’s future. Larry says, “That $400 story blossomed into so much more and opened my eyes to what it means to give back.” Their support of a scholarship at Gilmour mirrors this belief in aiming to provide similar transformative opportunities for today’s students. And the Kennedys’ support extends beyond the scholarship they provide. The pair has also made provisions for Gilmour in their estate planning as members of the Holy Cross Legacy Society.

Larry says his support is a demonstration of his belief in Gilmour’s mission and its impact. “Gilmour hasn’t stayed the same; it embraces change and growth. We give because Gilmour sends well-defined human beings into the world,” Larry says. “It is truly a transformational experience for all who attend.”

HOLY CROSS LEGACY SOCIETY

Members of the Holy Cross Legacy Society have notified us of planned gifts to Gilmour Academy from their estates in the form of a charitable trust, bequest, insurance policy, retirement plan beneficiary designation or gift annuity. Members of the Society have demonstrated their commitment to Gilmour’s mission by pledging their support and assurance that Gilmour Academy will experience continuing financial assistance far into the future. Every year, the Holy Cross Legacy Society welcomes new members.

BLUE & GRAY SOCIETY

In recognition of the Academy’s most generous donors to the Gilmour Fund, Gilmour created the Blue & Gray Society. Members have all contributed at least $2,000 to our annual giving program during the 2023-2024 fiscal year. Their steadfast support and leadership is a confirmation of their faith in our future and of their belief in the Holy Cross commitment to “educate the mind and the heart” of every student. The membership of the Blue & Gray Society brings together Trustees, alumni, parents, grandparents, alumni parents, friends, and faculty and staff members. Since the Society's inception in 2002, members have contributed $15,009,017, providing the foundation for the incredible growth the Academy has seen in that time. This year, the group contributed $952,833 to The Gilmour Fund, which was about 82 percent of the dollars raised for the annual giving program in the 2023-2024 fiscal year.

ADDITIONAL DONORS TO THE GILMOUR FUND

The cornerstone of philanthropy at Gilmour is The Gilmour Fund, our annual giving program, which has the most immediate impact upon our students. Its focus is to raise funds to help contain tuition costs by meeting a greater percentage of the Academy’s operating budget, and to provide need-based tuition assistance to qualified students who otherwise might not be able to afford a Gilmour education. The Gilmour Fund is used to attract and retain distinguished faculty, provide state-of-the art technology, and continue to grow academic and extracurricular programming. Every gift makes a difference and every gift is appreciated. Thank you to the following members of the Gilmour Community who made a gift to The Gilmour Fund this fiscal year.

We are grateful for the loyal support of our faculty and staff, whose leadership and commitment of their time, talent and treasure to both our school and our students bring the “Gilmour experience” to life each day. We are also thankful for the generosity and commitment of these faculty and staff members, who made a contribution to The Gilmour Fund during the past fiscal year.

Enduring Impact:

THE HOWLEY FAMILY’S GENEROUS SUPPORT STRENGTHENS GILMOUR'S COMMUNITY FOR GENERATIONS

Gilmour Lunch by the Numbers

We use about 325 pounds of lettuce and serve about 350 pounds of grilled chicken breasts per week.

We serve more than 560 slices of pizza per day and 425 bowls from the Gallery station.

The most popular dish at the Gallery station is the deconstructed egg roll. We serve more than 500 servings each time it’s on the menu.

Taco Tuesday is always #1 with the students and the faculty!

FEATURE

Spurred by their gratitude for the experience their children, Mike ’01 and Meg ’03, had at Gilmour, Nick and Lorie Howley approached Head of School Kathy Kenny, to discuss how they might help. And this wasn’t the first meeting of the sort. The family had been sponsoring Howley Scholars since 2005, providing the group with tuition dollars so they could enjoy the Gilmour experience as their children had. But they were ready to do more. Asked why, Nick Howley shared, “We had two kids go here and I think it did them and it did us very well and helped teach them to be good learners and decent people.” He added, “We run a foundation that primarily focuses on giving high-quality educational opportunities to those that can’t afford it. We look for schools that have very strong credentials and an element of character formation. We think Gilmour is unique in that.” His son, Mike, added, “I’m an alum and Gilmour was a wonderful place for me and I really enjoyed my time here, as did my sister. I’m a Lancer for life and we wanted to support Gilmour.”

In the meeting with Kathy Kenny, she presented the school’s greatest needs and the Howleys decided to support three initiatives through a $28 million commitment - increasing the number of Howley Scholars to a total of 48 by 2026, renovating the exterior of Tudor House and Tudor Gardens, and building a brand new student commons.

Over the past 18 months, the renovations to Tudor House’s exterior were completed. This included the remediation of the slate roof and numerous chimneys, copper gutters and flashing, masonry, windows, doors and foundation.

And in September, the restoration of Tudor Garden was finished. The repairs included filling in the fountain pool and replacing it with a sandstone patio; fixing the stone balustrade, steps and walkways; and replacing the landscaping. The renovations allow us to once again utilize this glorious space for student and alumni events. This year’s Homecoming Dance - An Evening in Our Enchanted Garden - was held behind Tudor House under a tent and was a great celebration of this transformed space. As of press time, we were preparing for the school’s Party of the Century, also held in Tudor Garden. Stay tuned in the next Gilmour Magazine for coverage of what is sure to be a terrific celebration of the 100th anniversary of Tudor House.

On August 19, the first day of school, we officially opened The Howley Commons, a cutting-edge dining hall that more than doubled our seating capacity. The previous Commons, built in 1970, seated 110. As the school’s enrollment has expanded, so, too, did the number of lunch periods needed in a school day. Prior to the start of construction, when food service was temporarily relocated to the Athletic Center, we had five lunch periods, with some students and faculty eating as early as 11:30 a.m. and as late as 1:30 p.m. This new space allows us to move to three lunch periods and return to our tradition of students and teachers eating together. It features a college-style layout with food stations spread throughout the Howley Commons to address students’ varying dietary needs. It also serves as a meeting space throughout the school day. At any given time, you can find students working together on a project or meeting with their teachers in Howley Commons.

In late September, we received word that the project received the Outstanding Design Award for Renovation/ Modernization by the American School and University magazine.

With the sense of community so central to the Gilmour experience, the Howley family’s generosity has allowed for critical updates to spaces that will continue to enhance the ways the Gilmour family comes together. Kathy Kenny shared, “We are so grateful to the Howley family and The Howley Foundation for their loyalty

and their support of these projects. They are quite literally impacting the daily experience of our students not only now, but for decades to come. It’s so hard to adequately express my appreciation to this wonderful family.”

Perspective on Giving

"My wife and I donate to the Ohio Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) to support students at Gilmour Academy. Gilmour’s mission of educating the whole person - mind, body and spirit - is something we both believe in, and we want to help make this unique experience accessible to more families. Contributing through the Ohio SGO is incredibly easy, allowing us to make a direct impact with minimal effort and it’s comforting knowing that our contributions are helping to open doors to students who might not otherwise have the chance to attend. It’s meaningful to us to invest in a school that shapes young people into compassionate, capable leaders who will make a positive difference in the world."

It's Free to Get Started

Making a planned gift is a wonderful way to show your support and appreciation for Gilmour Academy and its mission while accommodating your own personal, financial, estate-planning, and philanthropic goals.

With smart planning, you may actually increase the size of your estate and/or reduce the tax burden on your heirs. Contact us or scan the QR Code to learn more.

The Holy Cross Legacy Society of Gilmour Academy honors and celebrates those generous individuals who have remembered Gilmour in their estate plans. This includes bequests via will, charitable trusts, charitable gift annuities and retirement plan beneficiary designations. These planned gifts strengthen the foundation of Gilmour Academy and ensure that the legacy of education in the Holy Cross tradition lives on for generations at Gilmour.

There are also significant financial incentives and benefits for donors. Legacy gifts may provide federal and state charitable income-tax deductions and may reduce or eliminate capital gains and estate tax liability.

You can make a current or planned gift to Gilmour directly or through a gift model that can provide tax benefits and even income.

• BEQUEST - Write or update your estate plan and designate Gilmour as the beneficiary of your asset by will, trust or beneficiary designation form. Your will takes care of your family and a charitable gift in your will can reduce they amount of estate taxes owed.

• APPRECIATED STOCK - Easily make charitable gifts by transferring appreciated stock to Gilmour Academy. We receive the present value of the stock, while you pay no capital gains tax and receive an income tax deduction.

• BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION GIFTS - You can designate Gilmour as a beneficiary of a retirement, investment or bank account or your life insurance policy.

• CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY - You transfer cash or appreciated property to Gilmour in exchange for our promise to pay you fixed payments (with rates based on your age) for the rest of your life.
