About Us As a Catholic, independent, coeducational, college-preparatory school in the Holy Cross tradition for students PreK-Grade 12, Gilmour Academy inspires young people to discover their voices academically, spiritually and personally. Through a personalized approach to instruction facilitated by small class sizes, students are encouraged to explore their individual interests while maximizing their talents, and are provided ample opportunity to do so.

Lower School For the youngest Montessori student or the most inquisitive sixth grader, learning is fun at Gilmour. Students engage in scaffolded research projects on topics that are uniquely interesting to them, come to understand how to start a business in the Montessori farm project and the Young Entrepreneurs group, learn the basics of economics when the second-grade classroom is turned into a marketplace, hone their computational skills in the Fantasy Football math challenge and craft their own inventions for a national engineering competition. All of this learning occurs within a faith-based culture in which families of all religious backgrounds are welcomed and students begin to develop their moral compasses.

Middle School As students move to the Middle School, they are further encouraged to cultivate their critical thinking and communication skills. Working closely with their advisors and instructors, Middle School students participate for the first time in the twice yearly self-assessment process, through which they identify their strengths and weaknesses and set goals for the upcoming semester. Classroom instruction utilizes the Socratic Seminar method, which fosters students’ ability to form, articulate and support their opinions. Students have the opportunity to take advanced coursework in the Upper School and participate in extracurriculars ranging from drama to service and from athletics to the virtual investment club.

Upper School The Gilmour experience culminates in the Upper School where students continue to discover who they are called to be. With an average student-teacher ratio of 9:1, teachers deliver individualized instruction within a rigorous curriculum. There is something for everyone at Gilmour. With a variety of electives, including courses such as molecular genetics research, forensic science, computer science, finance, and management and entrepreneurship, students can explore different career paths while still in high school. Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in semester-long science, entrepreneurship and civic engagement internships offcampus. Finally, Gilmour’s nationally ranked speech and debate program, awardwinning drama program, championship-caliber athletic teams, state-of-the-art digital broadcast and music studios as well as a huge number of clubs allow every Gilmour student the chance to explore his/her talents.

Self-discovery is the hallmark of the Gilmour experience, resulting in a Gilmour graduate who is centered in faith, able to think critically and communicate effectively, and prepared to make a difference in the world. Preschool Camp Continuing our explorations from last summer, preschoolers will travel to new and exciting locations as we explore the continents in Gilmour’s Preschool Summer Camp. Each week, we will focus on a different continent as we delve into the culture, language, foods, clothing and daily life of that particular region of the world. Our “travel plans” will include cooking, reading stories, discovering the region’s animals, utilizing native art techniques and designs, listening to traditional music and learning how children live and play in that area. Our world travelers will also travel around the Gilmour campus as they participate in ice skating, swimming, tennis, taekwondo, scavenger hunts and many other fun activities. We hope your child can join us on our expedition around the world!

Ages 3-5 Runs Weekdays 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. OR Half-day option 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Cost is $300 per week and half day is $175, unless otherwise noted. All camp fees are due upon registering online. T-shirt, lunch and snacks are included in fee. Register online at www.gilmour.org.

Around the World in Seven Weeks Antarctica: How does climate affect animals and people? June 9-13

Asia: What special symbols and traditions are unique to Asia? July 7-11

Australia: How do children learn and play? June 16-20

Africa: What games and toys are popular among African children? July 14-18

Have your passport ready as we make our way to the coldest place on the planet! We will take on the role of scientists this week as we conduct experiments about the weather. We will learn how different animals survive in this polar region and what scientists need to have with them to be prepared for the icy conditions. We may even be lucky enough to bump into a whale or penguin on our journey!

Next, we will continue on to a much warmer region of the world. Our expeditions will lead us around the continent of Australia. While making our way around this koala paradise, we will pay close attention to what children in this part of the world do for fun. We will learn about special songs, games, and even what it would be like to go to school down under!

South America: What is home life like? June 23-27

Our travels will continue with a look at South America and how home life may have similarities or differences to our own. We will fully immerse ourselves into the beauty of these Latin cultures as we discover special recipes, music, dance, and even art forms. Don’t miss the excitement as we learn and gain a deeper appreciation for the families that live in this unique area.

Europe: What was Europe like in the past? June 30-July 3* (Four-Day Week) We will take a look at some of the beautiful European artwork and architecture that has existed for centuries. We will be exploring some of the most famous landmarks of this region such as Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. What an exciting journey, as we roam through the past! (Full-day cost is $250; Half-day cost is $150)

As we make our way over to Asia, we will study traditions that play an important role in this region of the world. We will also be looking at symbols that are unique to the people from the various cultures represented. One symbol, the mandala, is a spiritual symbol from Indian religions meaning “universe”. We will also take a close look at other symbols such as Chinese characters that represent words; including the famous Yin-Yang.

Halfway around the world, we are going to study what children in Africa do for fun. We will learn that while there are many differences between our cultures, there are still many things that remain the same. Many boys and girls in Africa play sports such as volleyball or soccer, and they also participate in activities like bicycling and playing hopscotch. We will also look into the homemade toys and games that are popular like drums and marbles that are made from nuts or stones.

North America: How does the land change across North America? July 21-25 Our final destination this summer will be our own continent of North America. We will make our way from the east coast to the west coast soaking up all that our continent has to offer. As we make our way across the land, we will pay special attention to the various landforms we will encounter. These will include mountains, volcanoes, valleys, plains and different bodies of water. We will study why these are important to the people that live in those regions.
