From 18 months to 18 years, everything at Gilmour – from the curriculum to the academic extension programs to the extracurriculars – is focused on the four enduring competencies that are most important to developing students as leaders of their generation effective communication, critical thinking and problem solving, leadership and moral responsibility. These enduring competencies are introduced in the Montessori toddler and preschool programs, then expanded upon and developed through both the academic rigor and personalized instruction in the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools. Gilmour graduates emerge poised to excel at the next level and confident in their ability to make the world a better place. It’s the advantage of being independent and Catholic.

Effective Communication Gilmour students learn how to be effective communicators, continuously honing their ability to listen, as well as to speak and write creatively, informatively and persuasively to a variety of audiences across a variety of platforms.

Leadership

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Understanding a problem is one thing. But fully embracing the challenge and finding the best solution among many possibilities is what sets Gilmour students apart from their peers. Rigorous academic programs challenge students to make deeper connections between ideas, subjects and themes. Our students learn to respect the process as much as the outcome.

Leadership comes in many forms. The cross-disciplinary, coed learning environment at Gilmour fosters student interaction with peers and faculty in a manner that is consistent with the “real world� as they work together toward common goals. Working through challenges as a normal part of the learning process, children become self-disciplined learners with confidence, grit and tenacity. Learning in a mixed-age group, children naturally assume leadership roles that prepare them for real-world interactions. The Montessori experience fosters children’s curiosity and an understanding of the world around them. Children gain an awareness of faith through the Good Shepherd Catechesis. As they work together to solve problems, students naturally develop the lifelong skills of cooperation and concern for others.

Why Montessori: The Montessori method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, uses an interdisciplinary approach driven by the child’s interests. Children learn by doing. They explore with sensory materials specially designed to translate abstract concepts into concrete understanding. Montessori materials encourage a child’s cognitive learning. For example, a 3-year-old may complete a math problem using colored beads. Children are guided by certified Montessori teachers who track individual progress and encourage children to master their skills through self-correction, allowing them to independently build their talents at their own pace. Mixed-age groups offer the opportunity for cooperative learning and peer modeling, which closely resembles real-world interactions.

Grades 1-6 Our Lower School provides an engaging atmosphere in which education is approached holistically, developing a thriving, whole child. It connects academics with the arts, religion classes and athletics for a seamless, well-rounded experience. Students learn to succeed in a personalized setting using real-world, integrated tools and technologies. Content-area experts and caring support staff meet each child where they are and guide them to embrace questions and seek answers.

Experiential learning is woven through the curriculum daily. On any given day, our Lower School students can be found in a small-group music lesson, working with practicing scientists or engineers, or learning the intricacies of coding. Living a lesson rather than just reading about it allows for the deepest levels of engagement.

CODING COURSES BEGIN IN

4TH GRADE

The Lower School strives to be at the vanguard of innovation, incorporating best teaching practices and technology. The technology-rich environment provides 1st and 2nd graders access to iPads while 3rd through 6th graders each have their own device. Students at Gilmour Academy develop a passion for learning early on and embrace challenges in a safe and encouraging environment.

Teachers at the Lower School teach their discipline to the same children for 2 years fostering strong relationships with their students and providing more personalized and meaningful challenges.

Cooperative project learning requires students to work together and apply knowledge from multiple disciplines to complete complex performance tasks. In grades 1-4, classrooms are open, promoting collaboration, self-awareness, respect for others and focus. Lower School students benefit from socializing with their older classmates, who help model kindness and respect. Cutting-edge lessons, research opportunities and hands-on projects taught by industry experts bring lessons to life. The religion curriculum encourages each student to grown in their faith journey, and fosters an atmosphere of compassion and dignity. Students learn how they may use their time and talents to serve others.

Our Middle School program helps students continue to cultivate the enduring competencies - effective communication, critical thinking and problem solving, leadership and moral responsibility - which prepares them for higher-level learning and ensures a smooth transition to the rigors of high school.

The Middle School emphasizes a workshop model where students hone their craft by reading and writing more frequently, on topics that are most important to them. The small class setting creates an environment in which students feel safe extending themselves, trying new ideas and making occasional mistakes.

Students participate in self-assessments which provide them the opportunity to reflect upon personal goals and habits, academic successes and challenges, and spiritual development. Students share these reflections in a dialogue with their parents, teachers and counselors. Programs such as Student Council, the Entrepreneurship Club and the Newscasting Club, as well as participation in student-led Convocation each morning, provide Middle School students authentic opportunities to discover and exercise their voices and grow as leaders during these formative years. In the Middle School, students are encouraged to craft thoughtful questions about the world around them and identify ways to bring about justice. Service is embedded in the curriculum with projects designed to illuminate social justice issues for students and encourage a lived faith. During these formative years, we provide students with opportunities to see beyond themselves and develop empathy for others.

Grades 9-12 Our Upper School furthers the education of Three Gilmour students received Ohio college scholarships totaling $30,000 at the state-level Believe in Ohio competition. Awards were given to 172 high school students whose STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Commercialization and STEM Business plans excelled. Awardees included students from 44 schools in 24 counties. Nikhil ’17 received a scholarship for his commercialization plan for a slip prevention system for walking on icy surfaces.

UPPER SCHOOL Grades 9-12

Our Upper School students become masters of

the enduring competencies - effective communication, critical thinking and problem solving, leadership and moral responsibility. Gilmour graduates are confident, articulate, independent thinkers who understand that they have both the talent and the responsibility to make the world a better place. Public speaking, attentive listening and the art of writing effectively are skills woven into every course at the Upper School. Through student-led Convocation, Socratic seminars and self-assessments, Gilmour students are taught to develop an opinion, respect those of others, and articulately defend their position orally and on paper. Small class sizes allow for dynamic student-teacher relationships that go far beyond the lessons learned in the classroom. Our teachers serve as role models, mentors and coaches and can be regularly found cheering in the stands at a soccer game, helping out at a Kairos retreat, volunteering together at a food bank or leading a mission trip during spring break. Whether serving on Student Council or the Honor Council, leading a retreat, captaining a team or heading a club, Gilmour students take on leadership roles in all aspects of the school. Gilmour students are thoughtful, aspirational leaders known for their competence and ability to take action.

A contemplative academic culture supports students as they challenge assumptions and come to terms with ambiguities. Gilmour Upper School students strive to make greater connections between ideas, subjects and levels of understanding. Math and science courses focus on practical applications and higher-order problem solving. Study of Scripture and tradition, inter-faith dialogue, and opportunities for reflection encourage students of all faiths to seek connections and find purpose. A semester-long social justice research project and integrated service program inspire empathy in students and demonstrate the power of action. Students in our dorm hail from 14 states and 5 foreign countries and their international perspective adds to the culture of our community.

Gilmour’s mission encourges competence and courage and cultivates both mind and heart. Students in grades 7-12 gather for daily Convocation. The importance of service is stressed from a student’s first day on campus. Retreats are built into the curriculum at every grade level. Local and international service opportunities are available. Students of all religious and spiritual backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to grow in their personal journey of faith.

LETTER | FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Friends, How lucky I am to have the opportunity to welcome you to Gilmour – a place that is as much a part of me as any other part of my life. While I began in my role as Head of School in 2015, my journey at Gilmour began in 1978. Over the years, I have served in a variety of capacities at Gilmour - as a classroom teacher, an administrator, a member of the institutional development team, and, perhaps, most importantly, as a Gilmour parent. I understand all that goes into choosing a school for your child. And I also know that this decision is not made lightly. But, I assure you that sending your child to Gilmour will be among the best decisions you ever make. The Holy Cross brothers model the Holy Cross core values upon which Gilmour was founded. Their influence has ensured that, from its first days in 1946 through now, the Holy Cross mission has been at the core of all that we do. The lay people with whom I have served embrace our mission and seem to view their careers more like vocations. Their passion for their students and the school we all love inspires me each day.
