Celebrating 40 Years ooking at old issues of Imprints, the NHS yearbook, you'll see that students have always pursued some unique arts opportunities. In 1998 (Northwood’s 25th Anniversary and the year Lori Major arrived to teach Theatre Arts) you could have seen highlights from Shakespeare’s “Scottish Play,” complete with witches, just in time for Halloween. Or maybe you dropped by the Homecoming Dance to see that student band performing with a young Ari Picker.
In the 1980s colorguard replaced the Pom Pom girls, and folks who enjoyed The Waltons on TV came out to see the NHS production of The Homecoming.
1978 extracurriculars included Craft Club, Yoga Club, Clogging Club and Mime Troupe! You could have taken the Optics and Photography class, studied typography and sculpture in Visual Arts, created commercials and news broadcasts in the Theatre Production Media class, or traveled with the Concert Chorus via Amtrak to perform at Walt Disney
World. 1978 also marked the completion of Project Entice, the multi-year NEA grant that created the NHS Dance Program. Students studied choreography, jazz and modern dance, and it proved to be so popular local funding was provided to continue to underwrite the program. Today, with two dance instructors, enrollment is in the hundreds. That visionary effort gives Northwood the distinction of being perhaps the oldest, comprehensive, public high school arts education program in North Carolina. For today’s students, the curricula offers beginning to advanced classes in each discipline, auditioned ensembles, honors coursework, extracurricular activities, and Honor Societies. With an emphasis on higher standards and increased mastery, students are exposed to myriad arts career opportunities not only in entertainment and education, but also in commerce, historic preservation, health care, and technology. Faculty offer students the chance to interact and learn from a wide variety of arts professionals via residencies, field trips, and master classes, some even taught by Northwood alumni.
2012–2013 was a celebration built on all that had come before and a year to explore
new possibilities as well. Here are a few of the highlights and achievements of the students and faculty in this remarkable program.

❖ Marching Band season begins with NHS Band Camp and 2012's Successors to the Throne, the Marching Chargers’ competition program, features the music of Queen and Muse. ❖ McDonald’s hosts Community Music Day fundraiser for the band. ❖ More than 50 students present the Fall Choral Concert, Bella Notte, with folk songs, spirituals, and Mozart. Pitch Please, the new a cappella ensemble, premieres. ❖ Symphonic Band students present an Ensembles Concert with solos, duets, trios, and quartets. ❖ Choral students visit UNC-G for Vocal Arts Day. ❖ NHS Jazz & Choral Ensembles perform for Northwood's 40th Anniversary Celebration. ❖ Band & choral ensembles present Sleigh Ride, the annual holiday benefit concert for CORA Food Pantry. ❖ Concert Band earns a Superior at the Central District Band Festival. ❖ NHS participates in the 4th Annual Chatham All-County Choral Festival at Jordan Matthews. ❖ Other spring music includes the Tri-M Spring Recital and the Jazz Ensemble performance at the 3rd Annual Motors for Music Car Show. ❖ The Concert for Memorial Day, Within These Hallowed Halls, by the Concert Band & Jazz Ensemble, includes music by Copland, Erickson, and Swearingen. ❖ Dance students attend master classes and debut new work at Meredith College’s High School Day of Dance. ❖ The Dance Department hosts the Morning News for NBC-17 when Northwood is featured as one of their "Cool Schools." Live segments filmed in the auditorium feature interviews and previews of the Winter Concert. ❖ Three Winter Dance Concerts include performances by Leah Smith and Kristen Norwood's 100+ students. ❖ Spring Dance features works by the NHS Dance instructors and eight student choreographers. ❖ Leah Smith is selected as one of 10 teachers across the nation to receive the Herff Jones Teacher Shout Out Award. It includes a $2500 prize for the Dance Department.

❖❖ 2012 Summer Drama Camp introduces Chatham middle-schoolers to theatre games, exercises and a production with leadership roles for NHS theatre students. ❖❖ The production of We the People during election season includes a field trip to perform scenes at Pittsboro Elementary. ❖❖ Nine students and chaperones travel to Ireland, Scotland, and England over spring break to study history, architecture, culture, foreign currency, and theatre. ❖❖ Drama students attend a student matinee of Cabaret by UNC's Playmakers Repertory Company. ❖❖ NHS hosts the first Chatham County Schools' Arts Extravaganza, coordinated by Dr. Carlin. It features over 600 students participating in two visual arts exhibits, a Middle School and a High School presentation with instrumental and vocal music, theatrical scenes, and previews. ❖❖ Thespians induct new members at Northwood Arts Awards Ceremonay. ❖❖ Dr. Carlin participates in ArtsNC's Arts Day 2013, a day of presentations and training followed by a day of legislative visits.
❖❖ '12-'13 extracurriculars include Art Honor Society, Art Club & portfolio seminar sessions, mural painting, a screenprinting workshop, a copper etching jewelery workshop with NHS Alumna Melanie Jansen Jackson and set painting for the production of Museum. ❖❖ January brings the Winter Art Show and student exhibits at the 20th Annual Studio Tour Opening at Central Carolina Community College. ❖❖ Scholastic Art Awards presents a Gold Key to Heather Meeker, a Silver Key to Luis Basilio, and Honorable Mentions to Lexy Brower, Katharina Rudy, and Kirsten Sellers. ❖❖ At the NCASA State Art Showcase, NHS places 4th and Brandon Edwards wins a State Championship Award for his Marketing Flyer. ❖❖ 21 students and chaperones visit the Metropolitan, the MOMA, and the Guggenheim on the Spring Art Trip to NYC. ❖❖ Community service efforts include gingerbread houses with Life Skills teachers, face painting at Relay for Life and ClydeFest, Art Honor Society assistance with Arts Extravaganza art installations, and NorthwoodArts' students in all disciplines hosting the Very Special Arts Day with Life Skills classes countywide. ❖❖ A student video about art club is awarded a grant from the CCS Activities Committee for purchase of a new pottery wheel for the art studio. ❖❖ Spring Art Show features 2nd semester work and Senior Exhibits. Seniors also exhibit at Siler City's Incubator Gallery. ❖❖ National Art Honor Society inducts new members. ❖❖ Rob Hamlet’s print, “Circuit of Life” is selected to hang in Washington, DC in the NCAEA Members Exhibit in June and July. ❖❖ Six 2013 graduates pursue visual arts majors in college. ❖❖ Ms. Burwell attends Visual Literacy workshops at the NC Museum of Art and NCAEA Professional Development Conference in Asheville. It features over 600 students participating in two visual arts exhibits, a Middle School and a High School presentation with instrumental and vocal music, theatrical scenes, and previews. ❖❖ Thespians induct new members at Northwood Arts Awards Ceremonay. ❖❖ Dr. Carlin participates in ArtsNC's Arts Day 2013, a day of presentations and training followed by a day of legislative visits.
❖❖ '12-'13 extracurriculars include Art Honor Society, Art Club & portfolio seminar sessions, mural painting, a screenprinting workshop, a copper etching jewelery workshop with NHS Alumna Melanie Jansen Jackson and set painting for the production of Museum. ❖❖ January brings the Winter Art Show and student exhibits at the 20th Annual Studio Tour Opening at Central Carolina Community College. ❖❖ Scholastic Art Awards presents a Gold Key to Heather Meeker, a Silver Key to Luis Basilio, and Honorable Mentions to Lexy Brower, Katharina Rudy, and Kirsten Sellers. ❖❖ At the NCASA State Art Showcase, NHS places 4th and Brandon Edwards wins a State Championship Award for his Marketing Flyer. ❖❖ 21 students and chaperones visit the Metropolitan, the MOMA, and the Guggenheim on the Spring Art Trip to NYC. ❖❖ Community service efforts include gingerbread houses with Life Skills teachers, face painting at Relay for Life and ClydeFest, Art Honor Society assistance with Arts Extravaganza art installations, and NorthwoodArts' students in all disciplines hosting the Very Special Arts Day with Life Skills classes countywide. ❖❖ A student video about art club is awarded a grant from the CCS Activities Committee for purchase of a new pottery wheel for the art studio. ❖❖ Spring Art Show features 2nd semester work and Senior Exhibits. Seniors also exhibit at Siler City's Incubator Gallery. ❖❖ National Art Honor Society inducts new members. ❖❖ Rob Hamlet’s print, “Circuit of Life” is selected to hang in Washington, DC in the NCAEA Members Exhibit in June and July. ❖❖ Six 2013 graduates pursue visual arts majors in college. ❖❖ Ms. Burwell attends Visual Literacy workshops at the NC Museum of Art and NCAEA Professional Development Conference in Asheville. She teaches a visual journal workshop and core curriculum for NHS staff and coordinates 2 workshops statewide for art educators.

Celebrating 40 Years ooking at old issues of Imprints, the NHS yearbook, you'll see that students have always pursued some unique arts opportunities. In 1998 (Northwood’s 25th Anniversary and the year Lori Major arrived to teach Theatre Arts) you could have seen highlights from Shakespeare’s “Scottish Play,” complete with witches, just in time for Halloween. Or maybe you dropped by the Homecoming Dance to see that student band performing with a young Ari Picker.
In the 1980s colorguard replaced the Pom Pom girls, and folks who enjoyed The Waltons on TV came out to see the NHS production of The Homecoming.
1978 extracurriculars included Craft Club, Yoga Club, Clogging Club and Mime Troupe! You could have taken the Optics and Photography class, studied typography and sculpture in Visual Arts, created commercials and news broadcasts in the Theatre Production Media class, or traveled with the Concert Chorus via Amtrak to perform at Walt Disney
World. 1978 also marked the completion of Project Entice, the multi-year NEA grant that created the NHS Dance Program. Students studied choreography, jazz and modern dance, and it proved to be so popular local funding was provided to continue to underwrite the program. Today, with two dance instructors, enrollment is in the hundreds. That visionary effort gives Northwood the distinction of being perhaps the oldest, comprehensive, public high school arts education program in North Carolina. For today’s students, the curricula offers beginning to advanced classes in each discipline, auditioned ensembles, honors coursework, extracurricular activities, and Honor Societies. With an emphasis on higher standards and increased mastery, students are exposed to myriad arts career opportunities not only in entertainment and education, but also in commerce, historic preservation, health care, and technology. Faculty offer students the chance to interact and learn from a wide variety of arts professionals via residencies, field trips, and master classes, some even taught by Northwood alumni.
2012–2013 was a celebration built on all that had come before and a year to explore
new possibilities as well. Here are a few of the highlights and achievements of the students and faculty in this remarkable program.
