Mission ChathamArts, the Chatham County Arts Council, inspires creative expression that celebrates our county’s heritage and identity through cultural activities that make Chatham County a vibrant place to live and visit. Arts in Education Placing working artists who teach to the core curricula in Chatham County classrooms provides paths to reach children who may learn differently, offers alternative approaches to other children as well as instruction options and assistance to faculty. When the arts are integrated into education, students become more excited about learning (and perform better in school), and teachers and administrators become more engaged. Grants ChathamArts has granted over $76,000 to other local non-profits since 2000 through annual Grassroots Arts Grants. Any non-profit organization offering community-based arts programs or events taking place in Chatham County is welcome to apply. The Grassroots Arts program is made possible by the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, who believe that a great nation deserves great art.

CEF is a nonprofit organization that has secured financial support and services to enrich student learning experiences and teacher effectiveness in Chatham County, North Carolina schools for 20 years. Our Board of Directors is composed of current and retired teachers, school administrators, parents, and community members dedicated to supporting excellence in public education. Each year, we award Creative Teaching Grants and Professional Development Grants to teachers and professional staff in Chatham County public schools and in 2012 we introduced PTA Matching Grants. CEF also partners with all pre-K–12 public schools and the Chatham County School system. 2012 Partnerships with Chatham County Schools include AVID in each high school, middle grades science education enhancement (Progress Energy & Biogen-Idec Microgrants Fund of the Triangle Community Foundation), and NBPTS NBCT candidate support activities (Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation). These programs are made possible by generous donations from local residents, businesses, Chatham County Schools employees and residents who designate donations during annual United Way of Chatham County workplace and neighborhood campaigns, and sponsors and participants in CEF special events. Support for the CCS Arts Extravaganza was made possible by a Chatham Education Foundation Creative Teaching Grant in Honor of Mrs. Thelma Turner’s many years of service to students and teachers in Chatham County.

Arts Education in Chatham County Schools

uI

n addition to improving the quality of life and promoting communities to new residents and businesses, the creative community offers tangible, economic benefits. As of 2009 in NC, this industry created and sustained almost 300,000 jobs, generated $10 billion in employee compensation, and produced more than $40 billion in goods and services. In urban areas it’s easy to see how a Durham Performing Arts Center or NC Museum of Art, for example, attracts tourist dollars and contributes to the larger economy. In more rural communities, we need to look closer at the benefits investment in the arts brings. In Chatham County, our vibrant arts education program emphasizes these benefits. Recent findings from longitudinal studies of over 20 years confirm that sustained involvement in strong arts education programs are associated with increased college enrollment, degree attainment, and greater civic engagement—with higher levels of volunteering, voting, and participation in local and school politics. And these findings are most significant for at-risk and disadvantaged students. Arts Education programs in Chatham County Schools flourish through talented and interested students, creative teachers, and supportive administrators. Music and visual arts are offered in sixteen of our seventeen schools. Students at SAGE Academy, our seventeenth school, are able to take Arts Education courses at Jordan-Matthews High School. Theater and modern dance programs have been in place at Northwood High School since 1974. Jordan-Matthews High School also offers drama each year. Chatham County has: • 40 Arts Education teachers, • Implemented creative scheduling solutions to maximize student exposure • Continued to grow and support arts education, and • Expanded relationships with other county arts organizations. This Arts Extravaganza is our first system-wide event. In addition to celebrating March as National Theatre in Our Schools, Music in Our Schools, and Youth Art Month, we hope the Extravaganza will 1. Provide increased visibility of the benefits of arts education to parents, community members and policymakers, 2. Increase opportunities for faculty, student, and system-wide collaboration, 3. Increase registration for high school arts classes, 4. Lay the groundwork for annual community arts celebrations, and 5. Provide the foundation for development of additional arts education initiatives for Chatham students—in school, after school, and during the summer. To learn more, to volunteer, or to make a contribution to Chatham County arts education programs, contact Ms. Sharon Allen, Lead Arts Education Teacher or Dr. Lori Major Carlin, Community Arts and High School Curriculum Liaison.
