Annual Report

T

he Northwood High School Arts Education Foundation (nhsaef ), located in Pittsboro, nc, is a community initiative dedicated to ensuring excellence in arts education by identifying, creating, and supporting programs that enrich learning, foster student achievement, and increase community involvement. nhsaef provides public relations, promotions assistance, arts advocacy, and hospitality services at nhs arts events. Through teacher grants, the foundation supports the arts education program—purchasing equipment and supplies, underwriting residencies, arranging field trips and contributing to professional development opportunities. Annual scholarships recognize student achievements in choral music, dance, dramatic arts, instrumental music, and visual arts. Since its founding in 2007, the Foundation has presented $25,000 in college scholarships to graduating seniors.

2011-2012 ACTIVITIES PASPort

pasport, The Professional Artist Series Portal, was the major new programming initiative. pasport provided students and community members with programs, performances and classes by some of the area’s most established arts professionals. Programs included An Evening with Stanley Baird and his Band, An Evening with Nnenna Freelon, A Master Class with the Lula Washington Dance Theatre, and A Sumi Brush-Painting Class with Leslie Burwell. Each of these distinguished artists volunteered their time and talents to perform, answer questions, teach, and discuss their professional careers. Teacher Grants Through a generous contribution, nhsaef provided funds for twelve new lighting instruments for the Benjamin J. Lee Auditorium to replace original stage lighting dating back 40 years. Silkscreens for the visual arts department were purchased and nhsaef contributed a small grant to support Dr. Carlin’s study trip to the Broadway Teachers Workshop in New York City.

Public Relations The NorthwoodArts Annual Report, highlighting the work of the Arts Education Department, is published each fall and presented to the Chatham County Board of Education, the County Commissioners, and state legislators. Copies are available at the nhs Open House and online. nhsaef maintains a website and a Facebook page with news items, photos, videos and a calendar of events. It also supplies press releases and promotional materials to local media during the academic year. Fundraising In addition to contributions and memberships, 2011-2012 fundraisers included Zumba classes, a yard sale, flower sales, and a Holiday Bazaar. Ongoing efforts include an electronics recycling program and concession sales at nhs performing arts events. Proceeds for the year totaled approximately $10,000. College Scholarships This year’s selection committee [Rose Pate, president of Jordan Matthews Arts Education Foundation; Mike Wiley, prominent area actor and playwright; and Mark Slavkin, Vice President for Education at Music Center/Performing Arts Center of la County, Los Angeles, ca] evaluated student applications and $1000 scholarships were presented to Daniel Ball (Instrumental Music); Josy Christian (Vocal Music); Kristen Hutchinson (Visual Arts); Julia Sloane (Dance); and Henry Stokes (Theatre Arts).

A CELEBRATORY YEAR AHEAD

As Northwood celebrates its 40th Anniversary in 2012–2013, the nhs Arts Education Department is planning an exciting year.
