Director’s Message
W
e thank you for joining us as we present Thorton Wilder’s Our Town. We chose to produce Our Town after much deliberation and a final class consensus. One of the things that drew us to this meaningful piece was Wilder’s assertion that it be “timeless.” Our Town is traditionally performed with little or no set. Wilder set forth this precedent so that the audience would be less apt to notice the props and costumes that make it a play and thus set apart from their world. In performing Our Town while using pantomime and stark sets, the actors are attempting to make the audience feel as if they too could live in this town and experience the same joys and sorrows (and don’t we?). As Thorton Wilder himself states, “The climax of this play needs only five square feet of boarding and the passion to know what life means to us.” Our Town attempts to reconcile the audience members with their own mortality and appreciation, or lack thereof, for life “every, every moment.” We sincerely hope that you enjoy your time with us. Thank you for coming. — Lori Major Carlin

Setting
The entire play takes place in Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire Act I: Daily Life Act II: Love and Marriage Act III: Death Running time for the show is approximately 2 hours, 20 minutes. There will be a ten-minute intermission between Acts I and II and a fiveminute intermission between Acts II and III. Please join us for concessions to benefit the AEF scholarships. During intermission you may also want to take a look at the time capsule we’ve put together to commemorate this group of actors, our new space, and the time in which we live. Each student has a poem and an item and an explanation for why they are significant. Also, the chairs used in this production are family pieces of significance provided by members of the company. Some are more than 150 years old and have survived fires, or sojourns across the country, or been passed down through four generations.
