LETTER FROM THE EDITOR I’m a Southern California native, no naturally I think Los Angeles is a wonderful place in which to live and work. But even I’ll admit, it’s a bit of a bummer for Angelenos that we don’t get to walk among the vibrant autumn leaves that define this time of year on the East Coast. After all, as much as spring is touted as the time of growth and renewal, there’s something to be said for the forward transition that takes place once August is over with. And colorful trees are one of its sole visual cues. Since the landscape around here is perennially the same, I’ve decided that I need to create visual cues of my own to usher in the autumn months. That’s why I tried out (and subsequently fell in love with) a couple of brand-new-to-me eyeliner looks using Cailyn’s genius, foolproof gel liners (p. 36). I also personally tested a slew of skin and hair products— some new to the scene (Eminence’s Monoi Night Cream, p. 31) and some cult favorites (DHC’s Deep Cleansing Oil, p.51). I can honestly tell you that I try hundreds of products every
year, and that the picks I chose to feature on pages 42-43 are now bona fide favorites of mine. I feel so privileged to share with you exactly why I find them so incredible. STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE FOR FULLER BROWS WITH SMARTBROW 1. Start with clean, dry brows. If possible, use an oil-free product to cleanse, and keep your brow area free of any serums, creams and moisturizers. If you need to pluck any stray hair, this is the time to do so.
4. While the product is still wet, distribute the color by making upward, outward strokes with the spoolie. If you need to add more product, now is the time: simply reapply where needed and repeat this step.
2. Using the defining liner, trace the upper and lower edges of your brow, starting from the inner corner all the way to the outer tip.
5. Remember that the outer tip of your brow should be aligned with the bottom of the inner tip. Use a Q-tip to clean the edges.
3. Fill in gaps and sparse areas of your brows using short, light strokes. Remember to move the liner in the direction of the hair growth.
6. There you have it—full, well-defined and youthful-looking eyebrows!

3. Plump it up Bold lips—the vampy, dark ones in particular—reflect less light than their softer-hued counterparts. As such, they can make thin lips appear even more so. To create the illusion of volume, simply enlist the help of your favorite highlighter, and place a tiny dab in the center of your bottom lip.
4. Balance the look with well-defined brows Dramatic lips of any kind are far easier to pull off when your arches appear healthy, full and well-shaped. And regardless of how much or how little you’re working with when it comes to natural brows, you can achieve them with SmartBrow. It uses hair-like polymers to beef them up believably. have to admit, I was a bit of a skeptic when I first heard the buzz about what’s quickly becoming known as simply “the mint green blow dryer.” I’ve tried plenty of hair dryers in my day, and as adept with them as I’ve become, I’ve never truly been able to replicate that fresh-out-of-the-salon blowout—no matter how amazing the dryer in my hand. Before I got the chance to try the Harry Josh Tools Pro Dryer 2000, I’d have told you that my last hair dryer—which comes from a wellknown salon brand you’re no doubt familiar with—is as good as it gets. I’d also have told you to save your money, had you asked for my thoughts on shelling out $300 for any one hair tool. And, well, it’s never been easy for me to admit when I’m wrong, but I’ll tell you what, having amazing hair pretty makes words easier to swallow. So here goes: I was wrong. This hairdryer is amazing. It is different. And in my humble-yet-educated opinion, it’s worth every penny. I know what you’re thinking: Why? Well, simply put, this is one of those magical rarities of a product that lives up to all its claims, and then some. But I won’t bore you with marketing factoids—you can, after all, learn all the technical details at www.hairenvy.com! They’re slightly less than official, but here are the honest reasons I’m obsessed with this pretty little hair dryer.
1. IT MAKES MY MORNINGS LESS HECTIC How could a hair dryer possibly be life-changing? I thought to myself the first time I pulled the tool out of its box. (A product at this price point should be classifiable as such, don’t you think?) Simply put, my time is precious—and the Harry Josh Pro Tools dryer has enabled me

to enjoy more of it. What used to take me upwards of 45 minutes (and required intense follow-up with a flat-iron) is now over and done with in less than 25. And the flat-ironing required once I’m dry is minimal, if needed at all. But more about that next.
2. MY HAIR LOOKS AS GOOD WHEN I DRY IT AS IT DOES WHEN I LEAVE THE SALON A trip to the salon is so much more than getting rid of dry ends or re-awakening one’s color. It’s also strutting out of the place with that it-happens-once-every-six-weeks fabulousness of a coif. The discrepancy between the way I blow my hair out—skilled as I am— and the way my stylist blows my hair out is the sole reason I used to schedule a professional blowouts whenever I had big event to attend. Those days are over! With just a Mason-Pearson brush and this dryer (and a little bit of styling product, of course) I can achieve that fresh-from-the-salon, frizz-free look that’s pretty and chic but not too “done.” In case I’m not speaking in clear enough terms, there is a HUGE difference in the quality of this dryer’s performance and that of every single other dryer I’ve ever used. And I’m not basing my comparison on drugstore dryers, either. Promise.
3. IT’S COUTURE, AND IT’S A SMART INVESTMENT, TOO What sets high fashion attire apart from its mass market counterparts boils down to one thing (well, one group of things): the details. The same logic applies to this hair tool. Not only was it designed by Harry himself—it was also handmade in France to embody a level of quality and comfort you’d expect in, say, a pair of premium designer heels. But unlike those ultra-pricey studded pumps that may or may not be stylish in a year, this dryer will remain a beloved staple forever. Behind its gorgeous exterior lies a genuinely handcrafted machine that’s built to last. Just how long, you ask?
