Mt. Vernon to get new supermarket? By Ryan Squibb If city officials have their way, a Harps supermarket will be opening its doors in Mt. Vernon sometime in the not-so-distant future. At the April 23, Board of Aldermen meeting, the board gave City Administrator Max Springer the go-ahead to make a proposal to Harps supermarket, based out of Arkansas, to come to Mt. Vernon. Springer requested the board let

himself and Mayor Dave Eden approach the company about coming to town if the city can provide enough reason to do so, through facilities and location. Springer told the board that the city, along with help from the Mt. Vernon Economic Development Corporation, would like to possibly buy 29 acres, just across I-44 and off Highway 39 southeast of Mt. Vernon, and build a building that would then be rented to Harps.

The presentation is expected to take place in the next few weeks. City officials are hopeful they can stoke enough interest from Harps to receive serious consideration. Harps already has eight locations in Missouri, its closest store to Mt. Vernon is Joplin; nine stores in Oklahoma and 53 stores in Arkansas. In other action during the meeting, the board: -Voted in Sue Lee to replace

recently resigned alderman Carol Millsap on the board, and also voted to keep alderman candidate David Wright on as a planning and zoning commissioner; -Voted in Lowell Phillips to serve as Acting President of the Board in Eden’s absence. The secret ballot saw five votes for Phillips, two for Gary Albers and one for Barbara Rubison—who originally nominated Phillips; -Voted 8-0 to do away with the

two-hour parking restriction from downtown Mt. Vernon; -Voted 8-0 to hire Cheryl Hood to drive the taxi for Mt. Vernon; -Voted 8-0 for the destruction of outdated city records; -Voted 8-0 to allow Chief of Police Garry Earnest to move forward in securing authority to set off the warning sirens in an emergency situation.

Lights out A fuse on the transmission side of the electrical substation in the east side of town tripped Monday afternoon, April 29, causing the power to go out on Mt. Vernon Boulevard for an extended period. The fuse is on Empire District Electric Company’s side of the substation, so they had to be called to fix the problem, Gene Stanton, city engineer, said. All of the business loop and east side of town was affected.

ABOUT TOWN

Supermarket pursuit a priority for city

by the Lawrence County Record staff ☛ Twinkies are back! The cream-filled golden cakes synonymous with childhoods past will be on shelves as early as July. They will be accompanied by Ho Hos, Zingers and Ding Dongs, but won’t be made by employees belonging to labor unions.

☛ Can you believe that it has been ten years since tornados destroyed downtown Pierce City and wreaked havok all the way to Marionville on May 4, 2003? ☛ If you have not yet purchased a gift for Mother’s Day, good news! You still have time! But don’t waste it. Take advantage of some of the local sales and specials geared toward that very important lady.

In the last year, Mt. Vernon has been the subject of much supermarket speculation. To review, first, Alps sold out and closed up. Their lease was bought, however, preventing another supermarket from using the building. As a result, Price Cutter bought Summer Fresh, making Price Cutter the only big show in town, by design. Fast forward a few months to the present as the city is now courting other supermarkets to come in. The latest pursuit involves an Arkansas supermarket chain called Harps. The city will soon be making a sales pitch to this company to bring their store to town if the city can make it worth their

while. This may mean providing a building and prime location. That location may be on undeveloped land just across I-44, although this early, who knows? There is the old Pamida building on the very west side of town—off the main drag-—that could be used as another market, but it seems that location might not be prime enough to entice others. Whether the city hooks another supermarket to town remains to be seen, but at least they’re trying. It’s a free market society, which is preferred, but does come with its pitfalls. The big supermarket in town has nearly created its own monopoly, which is by no means illegal, but is a negative for con-

Scripture of the week “Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.”

To the owner of, or the person who abandoned a young black and white male cat on the east side of Mt. Vernon, your cat is dead. He was apparently struck by a vehicle on East Street, near Center. To the person who struck the cat, I know it can sometimes be impossible to avoid hitting an animal in the street. Did you at least stop to see if the cat was indeed dead? Did you get that sickening feeling of having killed the animal? I hope so. Were you going faster that 25 MPH on East Street? Many people do. A police cruiser should sit at the Center and East Street intersection, where people north or southbound go too fast. To myself, this cat was at my house a few days ago. I already have four cats and one dog, all spayed or neutered and cared for. I could not take in this cat, but now I sorely wish I had. That’s my heartache to live with. I removed the cat from the street and buried him in my back-

sumers. Having no equal competition, prices and products can be manipulated to benefit the seller and not the buyer. Another big supermarket will come to town, hopefully soon. The city needs it sooner than later for sales tax reasons. City Administrator Max Springer has said directly that until Mt. Vernon gets a second big supermarket, or retail store, the city sales tax budget will continue in the red. Who knows? Six months from now there may be two large markets, more selection, better prices and sales tax in the black. But until then, we lose the green and live in the red.

Dear Editor

The cool, rainy weather didn’t deter music lovers and cabin supporters from turning out for the Bluegrass & BBQ at the Adamson Cabin Saturday. And the weather exemplified the reason for the event — to replace the leaky roof on the 1850s cabin and make other repairs. People came from at least four states, enjoying music, food and fellowship on the cabin grounds. We had many requests to make it an annual event — so we’re already discussing plans for the next one! Lawrence County Historical Society is grateful to all who helped with the event and contributed time, merchandise and money to make it happen. A special thanks to the talented performers, Timberline Bluegrass Band, Spur of the Moment Bluegrass Band, Virginia Snyder and the Blackberry Winter Band; to our emcee, Dennis Rodgers; and to the City of Mt. Vernon for all its assistance. Sincerely, Kathy Fairchild, on behalf of Lawrence County Historical Society panded about 2,500 feet by taking over the former Harris Hardware store next door. 50 YEARS AGO | MAY 2, 1963 ❧ Harold Rutledge reports he plans to start construction this week on a new five-bay service station and garage building on West Water street at Highway 39. He has operated a service station and garage on west North Street under a lease arrangement the last two years. ❧ Officials of First Savings and Loan Association of Mt. Vernon say planning is under way for a new office building at the northeast corner of the square. The property is currently occupied by the Bill Dowdy Chevrolet used car lot which is being moved to a new location on East Highway 166. First Savings and Loan, formerly Mt. Vernon Savings and Loan, has occupied its present quarters at the southwest corner of the square since 1935. 100 YEARS AGO | MAY 2, 1913 ❧ Aurora Advertiser & Southwest Miner: Four Germans driving a six-cylinder high-powered Mitchell automobile arrived in Aurora early this forenoon racing the No. 11 California express Frisco train from Springfield to Joplin, being 30 minutes ahead of the train on reaching the Elsey Brothers Garage, where they stopped a short time to have repairs made and take on a supply of petrol. The run from Springfield to Aurora was made in 40 minutes.

appy May Day. As many children used to do, I made and delivered May baskets to our neighbors and my friends FROM THE on May Day. It was SIDELINE great fun to go up on the porch, knock on the door, shout “May Day” and take off running. I don’t know what would have happened if I had been caught. In reading some about the tradition, by Rosemary I learned a kiss enHenderson sued. Whew. Glad I made it away! Arrangements for the May baskets took many days. I’m not sure where all the cottage cheese containers came from, but there were several just in time for the baskets. The night before Dad, Mom and I would drive the country roads looking for pretty wildflowers for the baskets. Then all those containers had to be wrapped in crepe paper and pipe cleaner handles attached. Another part of the May Day observance is often the wrapping of a May pole. When I was in first grade we had a May pole dance (or whatever it’s called). We students practiced for many days. I’m more than a little foggy on the details (it has been a few decades since this occurred!), but surely it was done at Franklin School. You see, a couple of days before the May Day observance I broke my leg and couldn’t go! It was so disappointing. We never did the May pole again.

I looked in Wikipedia to see what it said about May Day. It is an ancient observance of a pagan holiday. (Aren’t all the fun celebrations from pagan holidays!) “May Day falls exactly half a year from Nov. 1 another ‘Cross-quarter day’ which is also associated with various northern European pagan celebrations. “As Europe became ‘Christian’ pagan holidays lost their religious character and either changed into popular secular celebrations or were replaced by new Christian holidays. “In the 20th and continuing into the 21st century, many began reconstructing the old traditions and celebrating May Day as a pagan religious festival again.” Sometimes knowing the origin of something takes all the fun out of it. I think I was happier just knowing May Day was a time when you secretly took flowers to your friends. The same is true of Halloween (the aforementioned cross-quarter day). Getting candy from the neighbors was enough for the celebration! Another place we hear “Mayday” is in an emergency situation. Wikipedia has an answer for that question, too. “Mayday is an emergency word or procedure word used internationally as a distress signal. It comes from the French phrase ‘venez m’aider’ meaning “come help me.” Sorry, but I don’t deliver May baskets anymore, so don’t expect one from me this year. It’s a shame, but people today probably would not be as accepting of the baskets as were the people in bygone days. Peace.

DOCUDRAMA HAS A REAL FEEL — Top, The entire MVHS student body viewed the docudrama and , even though they knew it was pretend, it had an obvious sobering effect on these students. Lord, make me a channel of thy peace That where there is hatred I may bring love, That where there is wrong I may bring the spirit of forgiveness, That where there is discord I may bring harmony, That where there is error I may bring truth, That where there is doubt I may bring faith, That where there is despair I may bring hope, That where there are shadows I may bring

thy light, That where there is sadness I may bring joy. Lord, grant me that I may seek rather To comfort than to be comforted, To understand than to be understood, To love than to be loved; For it is by giving that one receives; It is by self-forgetting that one is forgiven; It is by dying that one awakens to eternal life. – St. Francis of Assisi

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 16, 1717, French writer Francois-Marie Arouet, better known as Voltaire, is imprisoned in the Bastille. • On May 18, 1861, the Humboldt Times newspaper casts first lady Mary Todd Lincoln in an unflattering light when it recounts a tale of how Mrs. Lincoln had usurped her husband’s presidential duty of appointing federal offices. According to the report, Mary Todd Lincoln took it upon herself to appoint a stranger to any office he desired. • On May 14, 1916, a lead article in the Times of London proclaims that an insufficiency of munitions is leading to defeat for Britain on the battlefields of World War I. The article prompted the creation of a Ministry of Munitions. • On May 15, 1942, gasoline rationing begins in 17 Eastern states as an attempt to help the American war effort during World War II. By the end of the year, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had ensured that mandatory gasoline rationing was in effect in all 50 states. • On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court hands down a unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public education is unconstitutional. The decision dealt with Linda Brown, a young black girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Harbaugh told board members the band usually takes a big trip every four years, and 2015 would be that year. Spencer said the choir had not taken a trip in about 11 years. The six-day trip, with a cost of approximately, $1,350 per person, is slated for June 2015. All student members of the band and choir, as well as immediate family members will have the opportunity to go, Harbaugh said. Administrators from the school will also be encouraged to join the tour. Danny Bowling made the motion to fund the insurance at the same level as teachers. n Board reorganization — Oath of office was administered to David Botts and Nathan Schoen, following the April election. Officers were elected to the same seats as the past year. High school will be eligible for breakfast. √Closed session: hired Susie Dorris to teach fifth grade reading; accepted the resignation of Rachel Kowalczyk, middle school art; re-hired all non-teacher personnel; reviewed vacancies and coaching assignments for 201314; and approved substitute teachers.

Animal of the week: Baltimore oriole Species: Baltimore oriole Scientific name: Ictarus galbula Claim to fame: Thanks to the fame of the major league baseball team, many people have heard of a Baltimore oriole, but many people don’t know it’s a bird that can be seen in this state. Though they are not seen here in abundance, Baltimore orioles can be found statewide in spring and summer in Missouri. In birding circles, Baltimore orioles are not only known for their striking colors, but also for the uniquely shaped hanging nests they build. Species status: It’s thought that, as habitat changes have occurred, North America’s Baltimore oriole population has declined in the past century. Though Baltimore orioles can be seen statewide, the greatest number of sightings occurs in the northern half of Missouri. First discovered: The first scientific description of the Baltimore oriole was written by the famed naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758. The bird is not named after the city in Maryland. It’s named after the English noble, Lord Baltimore, who founded the colony of Maryland in 1633. Lord Baltimore’s coat of arms was black and orange, just like the bird. Family matters: The Baltimore oriole is in the bird family Icteridae, a group that includes virtually all of the species commonly referred to as “blackbirds.” The Baltimore oriole is classified as a New World oriole. Old World orioles, which are sometimes referred to as the “true” orioles, are in the bird family Oriolidae. Length: 7 to 8 inches; wingspan of 9 to 12 inches

Diet: Baltimore orioles primarily eat caterpillars and insects, and occasionally fruits and nectar. One of the benefits they provide to humans is that they have a preference for tent caterpillars, which a pest of North America’s forests. Weight: one to slightlyunder-two ounces Distinguishing characteristics: Adult males have a black head, bill and back and a bright orange breast and rump. Adult females are paler than males. The females’ wings and backs are brown and their underbelly is olive-brown to yellowishorange. Life span: One was known to have lived more than 11 years in the wild. In captivity, the longest recorded life span has been 14 years. Habitat: Baltimore orioles prefer to breed and nest along woodland edges and in open areas with scattered trees. However, they can also be found in parks and wooded urban areas. Life cycle: Their winter range includes Florida, the Caribbean, central Mexico, Central America and northern South America. They begin appearing in their breeding and nesting range in spring. Sometimes, people see Baltimore orioles at hummingbird feeders. Females build nests made of hair, plant fibers and synthetic fibers. These nests hang from limbs and resemble small, gourd-shaped sacks. Females lay four to six eggs (typically four). The female incubates the eggs for 12 to 14 days. Both parents feed the nestlings. Young will stay with their parents for two weeks. Baltimore orioles lay only one brood per season.

Spiders should be welcome for their efforts You can reduce your chances of being bitten by a brown recluse or black widow by taking these precautions: -Exercise caution in areas where black widows or brown recluses can concentrate. Black widows often make tangled webs around outbuildings, storage units, old tree trunks or cabins not in regular use. Take care to look before placing your hands in a lumber pile, window-well, under rocks or little-used cabinets and drawers. -Keep cellars, rooms, closets as clutter-free as possible. Vacuum, dust and sort through stacks of clothes, children’s stuffed animals or other piled materials frequently. Spiders usually will not remain in a constantly disturbed area. -Shake clothing, blankets, towels and other articles if they have remained in an area where these spiders may be found. Information about spiders can be found in the Missouri Department of Conservation booklet “Common Missouri Spiders.” This publication is available at the Department of Conservation’s Southwest Regional Office in Springfield or at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. Spider information can also be found at www.missouriconservation.org Francis Skalicky is the media specialist for the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Southwest Region. Joplin man convicted for disaster fraud Scott Bradley Olsen, 58, Joplin, was found guilty Tuesday, April 23, in federal court on charges of disaster fraud and making a false statement to FEMA in a failed attempt to get federal disaster benefits following the May 22, 2011, tornado, says a press release from Tammy Dickinson, United States attorney for the Western District of Missouri. Olsen originally filed for disaster assistance on May 26, 2011, claiming a Joplin residence was his secondary residence, where he stored property that was damaged in the tornado, but FEMA found him ineligible for disaster assistance. After being denied, Olesen twice submitted documents to FEMA in an attempt to prove that the property wasa his primary residence. Olsen was again denied assistance July 27, 2011, the press release said.

As mentioned above, two of these arachnids we do need to avoid are the brown recluse and black widow. Brown recluses can often be found in homes, particularly in closets, basements, storage sheds and other places where clothes and clutter accumulate. Brown recluses are known as “violin” or “fiddle-back” spiders because of the violin-shaped marking on the top of the front portion of the their bodies (the carapace). Their overall color is grayish-yellow-brown and their bodies (minus the legs) are about nine millimeters long. Initially, many brown recluse spider bites go unnoticed. If you have a bite that you think may have come from a brown recluse, you should see a doctor immediately. Black widow spiders have glossy black bodies. Some have a distinctive red hourglass marking on the underside of their abdomens; others have red spots. The female black widow, which is 8-10 millimeters long, is the one that poses a threat to humans. The males are smaller and not considered dangerous. Black widows can be found under flat rocks, logs along embankments or, in occupied areas, in woodpiles, storage sheds or other outbuildings. A black widow bite often results in delayed pain at the wound site. As with a brown recluse bite, medical attention should be sought immediately after being bitten by a black widow.

YO

Missouri Department of Conservation Now that the weather is warming up, we’ll begin to encounter a creature many people don’t like to see, but it’s a good thing they’re around – the spider. When most people think of spiders, they think of spider bites. Spider bites shouldn’t be downplayed because they do happen and when they come from brown recluses or black widows, they can be problematic. However, when you think about the number of spiders around us, you’d have to say the chances of receiving a severely harmful spider bite are relatively slim. Consider this: Missouri is home to at least 480 species of spiders. It’s estimated approximately 11,000 spiders can be found in a typical acre of Missouri forest habitat. If that number staggers you, you better sit down for this one: It’s estimated more than two million spiders are in a typical acre of Missouri grassland habitat. Those numbers may be frightening if you don’t like spiders, but before you reach for insecticide and a rolled-up newspaper, think about this: Many spiders often consume at least one insect per day. The cumulative effect of this predation has a huge impact on controlling local insect populations. Think about the bug problems we would have if there weren’t millions of spiders out there eating insects.
