Ash Grove R-IV School District Letter from the Superintendent Welcome to the new school year. We have been working hard all summer to get everything ready for the 2013-2014 school year. We are in the final stages of renovating and updatin g se ve r a l school facilities and classrooms. Everything will be looking new and clean on the first day of school—August 15. Starting this year, all students in grades K-3 will be
attending Ash Grove Elementary and all students in grades 4-6 will be attending our elementary school at Bois D’Arc. In order to make these gradelevel arrangements work, we have had to make some slight adjustments to school and bussing times, which have been detailed on page five. If you still have questions, please feel free to call your child’s principal. We are looking forward to the new year with great kids, great parents and great teachers. Enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer break with your kids. Dr. Don Christensen Superintendent Ash Grove R-IV Schools

Ash Grove R-IV School District
New School Times Starting This School Year: • Ash Grove Elementary will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:05 p.m. (6 hours and 35 minutes) • Bois D’Arc Elementary will start at 8:20 a.m. and end at 2:55 p.m. (6 hours and 35 minutes) • Jr. High and High School will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:10 p.m. With these changes, both elementary schools will be in school for the same amount of time. This will provide both schools with the same amount of instructional time in the classroom—which is still 20 plus hours each year beyond what is required by the state. Bussing Considerations: In order to make these minor changes to start and end times, as well as to transport the students to each building at the appropriate time, there will need to be some changes to the bus schedules and routes. All students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade will need to be transported to Ash Grove Elementary in time to start school at 8:30 a.m. All students in grades 4-6 will need to be transported to Bois D’ Arc Elementary in time to start school at 8:20 a.m. Some students riding busses to Ash
Afternoon Busses:
Grove will have to transfer to a bus that will take them to Bois D’Arc, and some students riding a bus to Bois D’Arc will have to transfer to a bus that will take them to Ash Grove.
In the afternoon, all bus routes will remain essentially the same. Students in grades K-3 at Ash Grove Elementary that need to ride a bus home from Bois D’Arc will load on a transfer bus after school and will then get on and ride their regular route bus when they arrive at Bois D’Arc. Students in grades 4-6 at Bois D’Arc that need to ride a bus or walk home from Ash Grove will load on a transfer bus after school which will leave at 2:55 p.m. When they arrive at Ash Grove, they will transfer to their normal route bus, walk home or can be picked up by a parent when they arrive there at 3:10 p.m. Students attending Bois D’Arc Elementary that ride a Bois D’Arc route bus will stay in their classroom with their teacher until the busses arrive at approximately 3:30 p.m. These students will then get on their normal bus and ride home. Parents can pick up their students at Bois D’Arc to go home starting at 3 p.m. Parents can pick up their students at Ash Grove Elementary to go home starting at 3:05 p.m. In summary, Bois D’Arc students that need to transfer to a bus at Ash Grove will leave Bois D’Arc Elementary at 2:55 p.m. and will transfer to their normal bus at Ash Grove for the ride home. Ash Grove Elementary students that need to transfer to a bus at Bois D’Arc will ride a separate bus to Bois D’Arc after school where they will transfer to their regular route bus which will take them home.
Morning Busses: In the mornings, all bus routes will remain essentially the same. All regular route busses will arrive at both the Ash Grove and Bois D’Arc campuses at 7:45 a.m. Transfer busses for students needing to attend the other elementary school will leave each school between 7:45 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. For example, if your child rides a Bois D’Arc bus, but needs to attend at the Ash Grove campus, they will board a transfer bus at 7:45 a.m. to go to Ash Grove. Likewise, if your child rides an Ash Grove bus, but needs to attend at Bois D’Arc, they will board a transfer bus at 7:45 a.m. to go to Bois D’Arc. Every student will be given the opportunity to eat breakfast at school. In summary, all regular bus routes will end at each school at 7:45 a.m. Students that need to ride a transfer bus in either direction need to arrive at school to load on a transfer bus by 7:45 a.m. Students riding transfer busses will load and leave by 7:50 a.m. and will arrive at their final school destination at about 8:05 a.m.
Good luck in the coming school year!

Walnut Grove R-V Letter from the Superintendent Here we are again, July is almost over and school will be starting for the 2013-14 School Year on Aug. 14, 2013. Whether you are a newcomer or a returning student, we want to welcome you to the 2013-14 school year at Walnut Grove R-V School District. The beginning of the school year is always busy with registration, open house, the start of the fall sports season and many other activities. Please bear with us as we do everything we can to make the next three weeks transition into the start of the school year a successful one. Our maintenance staff has had a busy summer preparing our campus for the return of our faculty, staff, and students. We look forward to greeting all our students on the first day and we anticipate an outstanding school year. Several of our students have spent the summer involved in various school activities from FFA camp, FCCLA Nationals, Softball League play, and Boy’s and Girl’s Basketball Leagues/Camps. We hope that our students have had wonderful vacations and time away from school and will be refreshed and ready to hit the books when they return. Our district hired several new staff members this past Spring. I hope that our students, parents, and community have the opportunity to join us for Open House on August 13 from 5-7pm to meet/greet our returning and new staff members. The following is a list of new staff: Sara Gallivan – FACS, Karla Halbohm – Science, Erin Hillis – K-12 Special Education, Alison Loper – K-12
Registration
Art, Amber Reding – 2nd Grade, Dana Meinders – Librarian/Junior High CA, Darin Meinders – 7-12 Physical Education/Boy’s Basketball Coach, Deidra Parks – Junior High Math/ Elementary Physical Education. There will be several new changes in the district this school year. We have designed a new website and hope to have it up and running by the start of school. This is where you will find valuable information as well as weekly updates. We hope that you will find the new website easy to manipulate and informative (wgtigers.com). Unfortunately, due to FDA regulations we had to raise breakfast prices by $.05 and lunch prices by $.10. Elementary breakfast will cost $1.55 and lunch will be $1.85. Junior High and High School breakfast will cost $1.55 and lunch will be $2.10. The district changed the drug testing policy and a few small changes to the handbooks. The faculty will go over these changes with the students during the first week of school. This year’s school calendar will reflect a change in the number of days our students will attend. The state has always required districts to attend 174 days of school. They now allow districts to go less, if they meet the hour requirement. This year our students will only attend 169 days. Once again, our school starts at 8:00 on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013. I can’t wait to greet each of you and hear about your summer.

Willard R-II School District Letter from the Superintendent
Are you ready for school?? Are you ready for school??? It is such an incredible honor to be starting my tenth year as Superintendent of Willard Public Schools. I am continually amazed when I witness the dedication of our community, parents, staff, and teachers in their service to students. These many years have given me the opportunity to build strong relationships throughout our community, both personally and professionally. Immediately after the Fourth of July there always seems to be something in the air that the start of school is near. Almost every day I will meet someone that asks if I am ready for school to start. At this point I am officially declaring my answer as NO! On August 15 over 4,300 students and 650 staff members will descend upon Willard school buildings. Until that day we will continue to “get ready”! Here are a few things that we are doing: Preparing to serve both High School and Middle School in a 1:1 digital instructional environment. All students will be given the opportunity to have access to a laptop computer. Staff continues to prepare for new and different techniques to help activate learning with these new tools. A combination of hundreds of laptops and iPADS will also be used in Elementary and Intermediate School. This Technology Initiative is called “Every Kid Connected”. CAP work! CAP stands for Curriculum & Assessment Plan. During the past two years Willard Schools has totally reworked student curriculum to provide a rigorous instructional model for student learning.
Hundreds of student assessments have been written by our local staff to help determine the level of student understanding. Standards Based Grading. The goal for this initiative is to provide a more comprehensive understanding of student ability. If a student is awarded a grade of a “B” by a teacher it is impossible to know what that student understands by this simple letter grade. Standards Based Grading will help parents to understand specifically how well their child understands the learning material. This initiative will begin at the elementary buildings and will be expanded in future years. Continued Improvement on Teacher Evaluation. It is critical that we expect all staff members to continue to improve their skills. Willard Schools have worked for two years to reconstruct our PBTE (Performance Based Teacher Evaluation) model. Willard has exceptional teachers however, the expectation is continuous improvement. This year, surveys will be utilized to help

Are you ready for school???? teachers gain feedback from students and parents. Enhancing the District Communications Plan. The district is working to utilize our district website, social media, e-mail and texting to communicate with parents and students. Each of these digital formats help students, parents, and our community to be informed about what is happening at Willard Schools. For more information on how to connect, contact the district office. These are only five things that we are “doing” prior to the start of school. I assure all parents and students that when you return the floors will shine, the landscaping will be trimmed, the painting and construction will be complete, the busses will be clean and tuned to a fine roar, the kitchens will be spotless, the wifi will be robust and ready for action, the teams and activities will be in full swing for summer activities, the staff will be smiling and ready for kids, and the Superintendent’s answer will change to “ABSOLUTELY I AM READY FOR SCHOOL! BRING IT ON!” School building offices are open and if there is anything we can do to help please give us a call. Enjoy the rest of the summer, Dr. Kent E. Medlin Superintendent of Schools
