The 2017 season saw a return to glory for the Webb City Cardinals. After a two-year dry spell, Webb City once again finished on top of Missouri’s Class 4. The Cardinals put together a perfect season, going 15-0 after a 14-0 victory over Ladue in the Class 4 Show-Me Bowl in Columbia. The championship is the 14th in program history and the 11th for coach John Roderique. “It really is special,” Roderique said. “When you look back, you realize a lot of things had to fall into place. TITLE: Cards’ defense allowed just 9 points per game in 2017 campaign FROM 4 “The defense led us, no question,â€? Roderique said. “When you look at the games we played, especially down the stretch, it was a year of great defense. The kids played so hard on the ďŹ eld defensively. A lot of the credit for that goes to our staff, led by Coach (Mike) Smith. Any time things weren’t going well for us on offense, our defense always rose to the occasion.â€? The offense wasn’t bad, either. Webb City ran for 4,697 yards and passed for 1,043, averaging 313 rushing yards and 70 passing yards per contest. Directing the team’s split-back veer offense, senior quarterback Cash Link ran for 1,009 yards and 12 touchdowns and threw for 933 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. The conference’s co-offensive player of the year, junior running back Durand Henderson led the Cardinals’ ground attack with 1,703 yards and 25 total touchdowns. Henderson, who contributed just over 2,000 all-purpose yards, earned all-state, all-region and all-conference honors.

Senior running back Will Larson rushed for 957 yards with 13 touchdowns, while junior wide receiver Alex Gaskill had 647 receiving yards with nine touchdowns. The anchor of the offensive line was senior center Landon Bebee, who earned first team all-state, all-region and all-conference honors. Defensively senior linebackers Javis Berlin (109 tackles) and Jordon Rogers (98) led the way, along with defensive back Gaskill (87 tackles, six interceptions) and senior lineman Elijah Robinson (84 tackles). Senior lineman Bryce Wilson and Robinson both had seven sacks, while Rogers had six. Gaskill contributed nicely on both sides of the ball, earning first team all-state and first team all-COC Large Division recognition at defensive back and second team all-conference honors at wide receiver. As far as the kicking game, sophomore Sergio Perez converted 57of-63 PAT attempts, while junior Grant Burkett averaged 39 yards per punt. Roderique noted his senior class led the way. “The concept of team and family has never been more apparent John Roderique | WCHS coach than this year,” Roderique said. “It’s not about the individual with these guys; it’s about how the team plays together. I don’t think this team will be known as the most talented group we’ve ever had, but they played well together and they worked hard at it. It was a total team effort. “One thing I’ll always remember is this senior class,” he continued. “The leadership we had was tremendous, all the way back to the conclusion of the 2016 season. That whole group really led us. This group was a pleasure to be around ... just a lot of good kids and a lot of fun.”

Lamar overcomes injuries for seventh straight title Coach: ‘We found a way to score more points than the other team’ BY ADAM BURNS aburns@joplinglobe.com

What happens when you lose your starting quarterback midway through the season, an impact two-way player and a few key linemen? You fill the gaps, survive and advance. That’s what the Lamar Tigers did as they set out to extend their state-record streak of six consecutive Class 2 state championships. This time around, the Tigers, stretched thin because of injuries, made do, squeaking out a six-point win in the quarterfinals to Ava and a one-point win against Lutheran North in the semifinals. But the Tigers pulled away with a 21-point fourth quarter for a 37-20 state title triumph against Lafayette County at Faurot Field in Columbia.

LAMAR FROM 11 “Yeah, we did it together and figured out how to get it done,” Lamar coach Scott Bailey said. “It wasn’t picture perfect. Some of it didn’t look like a normal Lamar game, but we found a way to score more points than the other team.” Bailey said his 2012 team had some major injuries, too, but most occurred early in the season. “It’s just a matter of working through it as a team,” Bailey said. “It wasn’t a matter of wondering if things were going our way or weren’t going our way. We were just trying to figure out a way. “We had a lot of sickness and injuries late in the season where we were having to put guys in different positions,” he added. “Travis (Bailey) played linebacker for us all year, but he winds up playing tight end late in the year and lines up playing wingback late in the year. We got different guys playing on special teams simply because we were short players due to sickness and injury, and the guys came together and figured out a way to overcome adversity.” Lamar’s first big blow occurred when senior quarterback Stuart McKarus was lost for the season when he tore the ACL on his right knee during a September practice. Senior running back Michael Danner was lost in the Ava game with a foot injury.

Lamar’s Trevor Medlin (9) sprints past Lafayette County’s Kinser Madison (11) during the Missouri Class 2 championship game GLOBE | LAURIE SISK last month at Faurot Field in Columbia.

He did, however, return in the state title game, noticeably hobbled but producing 39 yards on 10 carries. Running back Trevor Medlin returned from injury in the latter weeks of the season. His recovery proved to be big, as he rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns on just five carries in the state championship game. To continue the list of injuries, offensive linemen Cameron Augusta and Hayden

Bartholomew also missed time. But the Tigers did have senior two-way player Cooper Lucas. He rushed for 1,890 yards and 31 touchdowns on the season. On defense, he made 57 tackles. Lucas was named Class 2 offensive player of the year by the Missouri Football Coaches Association after being voted defensive player of the year as a junior. In McKarus’ place, Duncan Gepner rushed for 619 yards on 126 carries. Danner

finished the season with 1,152 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground. So what do the Tigers take from this season? “You learn from what took place this season and build depth in our program so we don’t have the same problem going forward,” Bailey said. “Make sure we get guys ready to play varsity football.” Next up, the pursuit of an eighth consecutive state title.

Congratulations brotherhood on your 7th State Championship!

LOCKWOOD: Midseason skid doesn’t slow Tigers in run to semifinals FROM 14 In the end, the Tigers fell to state powerhouse Valle Catholic 41-27 in Ste. Genevieve. Still, Lockwood’s postseason run rejuvenated the fanbase that hadn’t seen a final four Tigers’ team in 16 years. “It was exciting. The community was obviously excited,” Rader said. “It was fun to just watch that group of kids in those situations where they had to step up, and it was fun to see them rewarded for it. It was fun to get out week after week in practice. “The thing that I was the most pleased with was how the kids dealt with adversity,” he added. “Every time we’d face a negative situation, the kids really fought and answered in a positive way. It’s so exciting when you see that, when you know they have that in them.” The Tigers started their season with five consecutive wins prior to the two-game slide to their Spring River Valley Conference foes. Consecutive blowout wins over Miller and Jasper propelled Lockwood into the postseason. Junior quarterback Paxton Masterson incorporated senior running back Josh Osterdyk and senior wide receiver Logan Sparkman into a dynamic offense. Masterson passed for 1,097 yards and 18 touch-

Osterdyk ran for 1,120 yards and 16 touchdowns. “They were a big key, obviously, in our quarterfinal and semifinal games,” Rader said. “They had a rough patch in the middle of the season where we struggled throwing the football a little bit. Those guys just kept working, and it finally paid off.” The type of work this group put in has the Lockwood community proud, Rader said. “I think the community of Lockwood really cherishes their football teams play-

ing hard,” he said. “And some years that means making a run like this, and some years it means you just win a handful of games or whatever. But they really want the kids to play hard and play physical, and hopefully we can do that in the future.” The Tigers are set to graduate eight senior starters, including all four linebackers, two receivers and two running backs. “This year, we had all of our skill guys back, but we were starting five new offensive linemen,” Rader said. “So next year we’ll bring back our linemen and have to replace all of our skill guys except for our quarterback. “They just kept fighting, and that’s the part I’m proud of them for,” he added. “Hopefully our underclassmen learn that by watching these seniors.”

After 3-3 start, Carthage reaches state semiďŹ nals Coach credits team’s late-season run to response to loss BY JARED PORTER jporter@joplinglobe.com

A regular season riddled with adversity didn’t keep Carthage from capping another campaign with a noteworthy run in the Class 5 playoffs. Despite a 3-3 start for the defending Central Ozark Conference Large Division champions, the Tigers went on a six-game win streak to claim their fourth

consecutive district championship and make the state semiďŹ nals for the second time in three years. A 54-13 loss to eventual state champion Staley ended Carthage’s season with a 9-4 record. But the Tigers won at least nine games for the third straight year. “Just watching the resiliency and maturity of these guys grow as the season went on, that’s awesome and made this season fun,â€? CHS coach Jon Guidie said. Guidie said his team got the wakeup call it needed after getting handled by Carl Junction 49-7 in Week 6. The Tigers started the year 0-2 after falling to Ozark 26-20 and Webb City 28-7.

2016 semifinal loss fuels Afton’s 2017 title run BY JARED PORTER jporter@joplinglobe.com

The 2017 campaign resulted in several program firsts for the Afton Eagles, but there’s one thing specifically that coach Zach Gardner will remember the most when he thinks back to the historic season: “The kids’ character was unbelievable,” Gardner said. “They faced adversity a few times throughout the season, but they always found a way to prevail.” Afton never wavered in a season that saw the team claim a perfect 14-0 record and a Class A state championship — both feats for the first time in school history. The Eagles not only won games but also dominated the vast majority of them. The closest contest of the season came in a 22-20 triumph at Rejoice Christian in Week 6, but every other victory was by 26 points or more. “Our kids were confident from Day 1, and they always believed they were capable of accomplishing things that no other team has done at Afton,” Gardner said. Afton claimed its gold ball with a 44-12 win over Crescent — a team that entered the game undefeated — on Dec. 8 at Owasso Stadium, which was the same site where the Eagles’ 2016 playoff run ended with a 43-15 semifinal loss to eventual champion Hominy. “There wasn’t much that was different between last year’s team and this year’s team outside of experience,” Gardner said. “We obviously had many of the same players, but I think that experience of coming short

CARTHAGE: Sappington throws for 2,129 yards, 18 TDs on season FROM 19 and had a heart-to-heart with each other,” Guidie said, adding that the defense began taking pride in itself and became a difference-maker in the postseason. Carthage and Neosho met again two weeks later in the district semifinals, and Neosho was limited to 116 yards total and just six yards in the second half as Carthage came away with its first shutout

in a postseason game since 1987. “Our defense was unbelievable,” Guidie said. “They got challenged for two weeks ... and they came out and took it personally. They just played exceptionally, and I’m proud of them and the defensive coaches.” The CHS defense emulated that performance in the next rounds to hold Willard and Battle to 13 and 7 points, respectively. The Carthage offense, which registered

just one touchdown in losses to Webb City and Carl Junction, began to find a rhythm as it notched 40-point showings in the final three weeks of the regular season. Sappington, a junior, ended the season with a 60.5 percent completion rate for 2,129 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also had 138 carries for 550 yards and seven more touchdowns. “Zeke has grown as much as anybody I’ve ever coached,” Guidie said. “And not

just as a player, but with his leadership, his ability to run our team and lead our team.” Sappington’s favorite target, senior receiver Arkell Smith, registered 65 catches for 1,201 yards and nine touchdowns while junior Jayden Morgan caught 21 passes for 409 yards and three scores. Clay Newman led the CHS ground attack with 226 carries for 1,309 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Mount Vernon makes magical postseason run BY JASON PEAKE jpeake@joplinglobe.com

The 2017 football season was definitely a historic one for the Mount Vernon Mountaineers. After putting together a stellar postseason run, the Mountaineers advanced to a state championship game for the first time since 1982. It was Mount Vernon’s third trip to a title game in program history. And despite a 47-9 loss to Maryville in the Class 3 Show-Me Bowl in Columbia, Mount Vernon had a fall to remember. “It was a pretty magical run for us,” Mount Vernon coach Tom Cox said. “I’ll always remember the players that made it happen. They could have easily shut it down after we got to 5-4. They just decided they weren’t ready to quit playing. I’ll look back on this team fondly for sure.” After dropping their final three games of the regular season, the Mountaineers were sitting at 5-4 on the season. But Mount Vernon turned things around in a big way, winning five straight postseason games to advance to the title game. Cox said everything just started to click. “They just decided to keep working hard,” Cox said of his players. “The guys started buying in more as far as preparation in practice. We got locked in and concentrated on assignment football. We just started playing well in all three phases.” It didn’t hurt that the Mountaineers were battle-tested after going through a rigorous Big 8 Conference schedule. “Our tough schedule really

RUN: Cox credits tough Big 8 schedule with preparing team for playoffs FROM 22 helped us,” Cox said. “From top to bottom, the Big 8 was much better this year.” Seeded fifth in District 4, the Mountaineers began their run by avenging losses to Aurora and Seneca in the playoffs. “Once we beat Aurora, it gave us some confidence,” Cox said. “And we caught fire on our special teams. We blocked a bunch of kicks, four in the postseason. And some of them led directly to touchdowns. And our offensive line kept getting better and better.” Mount Vernon beat Reeds Spring 3028 for the district championship before double-digit wins over Eldon (24-6) and Lutheran South (16-0) put the team in the title game. The Mountaineers used a balanced offensive attack, compiling 2,352 rushing yards and 1,977 passing yards. Senior quarterback Ty Boswell threw for 1,977 yards with 19 touchdowns. Boswell also ran for 626 yards and eight scores. Senior running back Sammy Robinson recorded 1,541 rushing yards with 15 touchdowns, while senior wide receiver Andrew Montemayor compiled 962 receiv-

Other leading receivers were seniors Chance Fenton (292 yards, 4 TDs) and Ethan Johnston (205 yards). Junior linebacker Will Boswell led the defense with 240.5 tackles. Boswell’s total was the second-most in a season in state history. The Class 3 Defensive Player of the Year, Boswell now has 442.5 career tackles. The state record for a career is 623.

Other leaders in tackles were Cayden Heisner (106), Montemayor (105.5) and Robinson (98.5). Senior kicker Jayden Buttram scored 45 points with 27 PAT kicks and six field goals. Cox said his team’s seniors left their mark on the program. “These guys have been good all the way through,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier with those guys.” In what may be the biggest takeaway from the season, Cox noted his team learned from its losses and simply worked hard to improve. “We were 5-4 and the guys looked at themselves ... we all did, the coaching staff and the players,” Cox said. “We just got better. We could have gone 5-5 and gone home. But we didn’t.”

Frontenac seniors responsible for midseason turnaround ‘They started fighting for each other, and that’s what mattered’ BY LUCAS DAVIS ldavis@joplinglobe.com

After losing some of the top offensive talent in the state, not many outside of the Frontenac program gave the team a real chance at competing in 2017. The Raiders used that lack of respect as a driving force on the way to finishing as the Kansas Class 4A Division II state runner-up. “A lot of people outside of our program didn’t have a lot of expectations for us,” Frontenac coach Mark Smith said. “That kind of gave our kids a chip on their shoulder because they felt like they were being overlooked because of who graduated from last year’s class. Our kids used that as motivation to turn their season around.” Frontenac finished the season with a 9-4 record and tied for second in the CNC League at 4-2. Frontenac navigated a difficult early season schedule to a 3-3 record, with the loss to Labette County in Week 6 christened as the turning point. “We didn’t play as well as we wanted to, but the early part of our schedule was difficult as well, and that just speaks to the strength of the CNC League,” Smith said. “We kept getting better and played harder week to week, and I think our loss

to Labette County was the turning point for our season. Hale, Dylan Toal, Nathan Kaufman and Cal Strand — as the main reason “Our turnaround all started with our seniors,” Smith said. “We had a few heartto-heart talks about the way we were playing, and they got the team to come together. It didn’t matter what we as coaches were doing. They started fighting for each other, and that’s what mattered.” The Raiders took several weeks to find their identity as a team, which is normal

COLGAN: Luke Orender racks up 107 tackles during 2017 campaign FROM 26

St. Mary’s-Colgan season results (10-3)

Seematter had one strong takeaway. “I didn’t realize how special the Colgan community would be,” Seematter said. Colgan ended 2017 with a 10-3 record and 4-2 in the CNC League, tied for second place. The Panthers split their first four games before winning eight straight to earn a berth in the state title game, where they fell to Smith Center. “I thought we played as well as we could have,” Seematter said. “To make it all the way to the state title game, I think it speaks volumes to our kids and the types of coaches we have on our staff. It shows how committed this program was to our goal this season.” Colgan graduates eight seniors this season — Bryce Hutchins, Jeremiah Buche, Jacob Dellasega, Max Wilson, Alex Herod, Roman Sanchez, Sam Green and Trevor Graham. “Coaching your first group of seniors can be tough because they spent their last three years under a different coach,” Seematter said. “And with as long as Coach (Chuck) Smith has been here, they were a part of his program for a lot longer than three years. They accepted me right away, and I can’t tell you how important they were to the success we’ve had this year.” The Panthers averaged 258 yards off

AFTON

Afton’s Briar Julian (3) stiff arms Cashion’s Austin Vandruff (14) for a long touchdown Nov. 17 during a secondround playoff game in Afton. After coming up one game short in 2016, the Eagles ran the table in 2017, going undefeated en route to the school’s first ever state football championship.

FROM 21 the second-half spark the team desperately needed. “It was a turning point for us in the playoffs,” he said. “We usually run a lot of quarterback iso, but it wasn’t working as well for us in the first half. Then I heard Zach Henry say, ‘I’ve figured them out. Run behind me, Coach.’ There was just a confidence and swagger to him when he said it. “We figured out that Zach was annihilating guys on his blocks, and after hitting them a few times, they were trying to avoid him.” So Gardner adjusted the play calling in the second half to let Henry bulldoze paths for the Afton backs. The Eagles went on to score 34 unanswered points and put away Cashion 40-14. “We’ve been very fortunate to have a kid like Zach,” Gardner said. “He was that type of leader all season for us.” Afton opened the playoffs with a 48-7 win over Savanna, and after beating Cashion, it earned a 30-6 quarterfinal victory against Minco.
