Old jail tours, kids fingerprinting offered by sheriff’s department Fingerprinting for children is being offered for the second year by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department at their booth during this year’s Apple Butter Makin’ Days. “The fingerprinting is so if parents don’t have them, in case their kids get lost or abducted, it’s good for identification purposes,” said Sgt. Chris Berry. Prints of all 10 fingers are taken with a standard identification kit, which are then given to the parents. The child’s fingerprints are not kept by the department. Finger-printing will be offered all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Handouts about alcohol and drug abuse, drug court and coloring books for children will also be available at the booth. This will also be the fourth year the department will be offering tours of the old jail. The tours, led by Berry, take about 10 minutes, during which he gives a history of the old jail and some history of law enforcement in Lawrence County. Tours of the jail will be offered Friday at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., Saturday at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., and Sunday at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Several of the sheriff’s department’s newer patrol cars, as well as the department Humvee, will be on display near their booth.
Sheriff’s auxiliary to assist during festival In addition to helping man the Sheriff’s Department booth, the Sheriff’s auxiliary will be cooperating with the police department in the evenings, acting as watchmen for booths on the square after hours. “We’ll be working with the police as another set of eyes,” said Jason Haymes, of the auxiliary. The Sheriff’s Auxiliary began in 2012 and now has about 30 members. Haymes said most members are older people, interested in community service. To join the auxiliary, members have to undergo training, including obtaining a conceal-carry permit. The auxiliary’s main purpose is to be available to assist in the event of a disaster, or at events such as Apple Butter Makin’ Days. Haymes was quick to point out that though the auxiliary will be there to help, they have no law enforcement authority. “We’re just another set of eyes with communication capabilities,” said Haymes. Haymes said that there will probably be two shifts evening and night, Friday and Saturday.

For the common good Mt. Vernon FFA Chapter continues ABMD service
The Mount Vernon FFA Chapter will once again be assisting with preparations and events during this year’s Apple Butter Makin’ Days, moving to town benches, tables and trash barrels loaned to the Chamber of Commerce from the Ernte Fest grounds in Friestatt and manning a booth on the square, as well officiating the kiddie-tractor pull, which they have done for about 10 years now. “The FFA has a brand, at least in Mt. Vernon, of community service,” said Jason Haymes, FFA advisor at Mt. Vernon High School. “Whatever the Chamber of Commerce needs, we try to be on call for.” Haymes said that over the course of the festival, FFA members will put in about 300 man-hours. Local FFA alumni also help work the booth. “We try to get the kids involved, it gives them a sense of ownership in it,” said Haymes. “It’s a great community activity.”

5K/10K supports Mexico mission
Apple Butter: Round Grove’s biggest export
By James McNary
What would Apple Butter Makin’ Days be without apple butter? And just from where does all the apple butter for the festival come? For about 28 years, Round Grove Baptist Church has been supplying a major portion of the concoction prepared prior to, and during, the festival. Last year, the church made and sold about 9,000 jars, over 1,000 gallons, of apple butter. The church makes the apple butter in the traditional fashion, in large copper kettles over open fires. Church Pastor Bob Holman said it takes over six hours to make a batch. This year, the church began making apple butter Sept. 21, making two batches per kettle the next few Saturdays, in addition to batches made on the square during the festival. Volunteers prepare the batches in five kettles: four hold 40 gallons, one holds 35. Many of the kettles are quite old. “I’d imagine this one is about 150 years old,” said Holman, while stirring. Holman said that when the church was first approached about making the apple butter for the festival, they had to borrow a “pot” from an old German family in Lockwood. They also had to be taught the recipe and how to do it. Most commonly in the past, Jonathan apples would have been used, but the biggest supply the church could get that first year were a yellow delicious variety, and those batches turned out so well that the church is still using a similar variety. At one time, the church sourced apples locally, picking and pealing up to 85 bushels by hand. The church now buys pre-pealed apples, shipped frozen from Peterson Farms of Shelby, Mich. This year, the church will go through six tons of apples. Holman said that using yellow variety apples gives the apple butter a sweeter taste, and it takes less sugar.
For the fourth year in a row, a 5k run will be held during Apple Butter Makin’ Days hosted by the Youth Mission group of Covenant Baptist Church. This is also the second year for 10k run held at the same time. Entry fees for the 5K/10K serve as a fundraiser to support missions work in Reynosa, Mexico. According to Covenant Youth Pastor Derick Barnes, this is the primary fundraiser for the group’s work in Mexico; this year’s goal is to raise funds to help in the rebuilding of a church, last year’s funds were used to help a qualifying family build a home. Barnes said that about 10 percent of the monies raised go to local missions, such as Holiday Central. Halltown Baptist, Grace Community and another church in Michigan also sponsor the work. Last year was the second year a group from Covenant traveled to Mexico to directly participate in the missions work, with 29 from the church making the trip. The group began holding the 5K
after holding a softball tournament for several years. That was stopped when the car show was moved nearby and those exhibitors didn’t want errant balls hitting their cars. They also formerly had a booth on the square, until an anonymous donor paid them $500 to discontinue that, too. The group still holds a yearly garage sale as another fundraiser. The run will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, by Eli’s Shortstop/L&M Tire. There will be age divisions: 0-14, 15-34, 35-54, and 55-over. Awards will be given to the top two finishers, male and female, in each division, as well as to the oldest and youngest participants. The course will be a loop going west from L&M on the north shoulder of the business loop, down Hayward Drive to Landrum Street, back to the business loop to finish at L&M. This routing has no significant hills, which the organizers say should be great for novices and very fast for experienced runners. For more information, contact Derick Barnes at 417-353-2192 or 417-4662139.
Participants of the 2012 5K/10K pose after completing the run.
And using less sugar is a big deal when making apple butter on this scale. On an average year, the church will use a ton of sugar. The church will also go through 50 pounds of cinnamon, 24 cases of Red Hots, and 65 seven-ounce bags of Splenda, which is used in special batches for people with dietary restrictions. “Most people don’t realize this is almost like a small business when you’re making this much,” said Holman. “You’ve got $17,000 invested before you fill a pot.” Without volunteers, none of this labor-intensive work would get done.
Above, Round Grove Pastor Bob Holman stirs a batch of apple butter in a 150-year-old kettle. Left, Jars of apple butter cover tables in the church fellowship hall. Bottom, Making apple butter outdoors in kettles.
Church members young and old pitch in stirring pots and filling jars. “If it wasn’t for volunteer labor, we just couldn’t do it,” said Holman. “It’s really been unbelievable the gang that’s worked here,” said Buck Adams, one of those volunteers. “It started with a bunch of World War II veterans, and I’m about the only one left, I guess.” Adams said he’s been making apple butter “almost as long as the preacher,” and that it just gets bigger every year. “It’s gotten so big over time, with so many people,” said Adams. “We just about sell out all the time.”

Why Celebrate Recovery? We all have issue. Many of those issues, over time, lead to barriers that prevent us from achieving the real level of happiness. Recognizing this fact, Living Water Fellowship, offers a proven method to assist people in mastering their hurts, habits and hang-ups. God’s blessings can be part of your life.
Who is Celebrate Recovery For? It is for people of all walks of life, anyone with a hurt, a habit, or a hang-up. Celebrate Recovery is not restricted to those struggling with an addiction. We all have issues that are interfering with our fellowship with God and others. Therefore we all qualify.
Each Friday Night
6 p.m. Dinner 7 p.m. Large Group Worship 8 p.m. Small Open Share Groups 9 p.m. Solid Rock Café Child care provided for birth-6th grade
Celebrating our 1st Anniversary, October 18!
How does Celebrate Recovery Work? It is a biblical approach utilizing small groups and the power of the Holy Spirit. The most successful 12 step program ever created is offered too. It combines our human need of support with the spiritual power of the Holy Spirit in a structured, guided, and risk-free environment.
Why is Celebrate Recovery For You? We’ve all been hurt by other people, we’ve hurt ourselves, and we’ve hurt others. And as a result, every single one of us ends up with some sort of hurt, hangup or habit. But the question we all face is, where do we go from here?
There is a place for you. Come Join Us!

“BEEN AT IT”
t’s true, the Round Grove congregation has “been at it” for more than a quarter of a century! Apple butter has become a tradition. Of course, we must plan ahead since it starts for our volunteers on the third Saturday of September before 5:00 a.m. Hopefully, the weather will have cooled down so that standing near a 50-gallon copper kettle doesn’t cook the stirrer. You can’t stop stirring you know, not until it’s done and out of the pot. o you want to know what our “secret” ingredients are? To make 1100 gallons of apple butter, it takes 12,000 lbs. of sliced apples, 750 cases of pint jars, 55 lbs. of ground cinnamon, 20 cases of red hots, one ton of sugar, and for the suger free, 85 bags of Splenda. But if you have “been at it” for several years, the formula is in your head. y the way, having “been at it” for 25 plus years is short in comparison to how long God and His Son Jesus have “been at it”. And what have the Father and Son “been at”? They have “been at” creation, sending a worldwide flood, making rainbows, sending prophets, making and keeping promises, aiding people, and answering prayers. God allowed a virgin to give birth to His Son. God became a man, taught mankind, lived perfectly, died as mankind’s sacrifice for all of our sins, rose from the dead, and was taken back to Heaven in a cloud. What’s more, Jesus is the only Savior for all mankind and will return someday to be “King of Kings and Lord of Lords”. King Jesus will reign over all the earth as our Redeemer. So, God and Jesus have “been at it” from earth’s creation and with Them, there is no end.
S
ince our God and Savior have “been at it”, they have made all Christians this promise: “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurabley more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever!

VFW quilt raffle
The VFW Post 4541 will be having a quilt raffle at Apple Butter Makin’ Days. The two quilts were handmade by the late Helen Moore-Davis. Tickets for the raffle are $1 per ticket or six tickets for $5. All proceeds will benefit the VFW.
Donations accepted for Toy Drive
Donations to “Help Fill the Toy Truck” are being collected during this year’s Apple Butter Makin’ Days parade. To contribute, bring a new, unwrapped toy or stocking stuffer to the parade Oct. 12. Other needs include wrapping paper, gift bags, ribbons, bows and like items. Donations can also be dropped off at offices of the Lawrence County Record and at the Missouri Rehabilitation Center. Organizers said the MRC Toy Drive, in conjunction with Holiday Central, was able to help 700 children last year, and that they hope to make this year even better. All donations benefit children in Lawrence County. For more information contact Jenny Force at 417-461-5429 or Connie Chapman at 417-461-5242.

Haymes said that there will probably be two shifts evening and night, Friday and Saturday.

ome one. Come all to our 47th annual Apple Butter Makin’ Days. It is a family-friendly event spanning three days from Oct. 11-13. Travelocity rates it as one of Missouri’s top 10 festivals. As you approach the
Mt. Vernon square you will become aware of a unique and appealing scent. If you follow your nose you will find yourself on the old courthouse lawn where apple butter is being made in copper kettles over an open fire as it was centuries ago. When you walk around the square you will see over 400 booths, many with crafters making and displaying hand crafts which will be so diverse as to appeal to all ages. Come hungry as there will be a wide variety of food booths serving anything from apple dumplings and funnel cakes to pulled pork and steak sandwiches. For your entertainment pleasure, there will be a number of games, a carnival and, of course, the main stage, which will feature live bands, and a number of contests. On Saturday be sure and be here early as Mt. Vernon hosts one of the best parades in the

Don’t fret about parking as there are free shuttles to and from the festival. Don’t miss out on this weekend of fun, whether you are a first time attendee or have made this a regular repeat experience. There is always something new and exciting at Apple Butter Makin’ Days.
