A kaffemik is a traditional social gathering where people celebrate a family event and come together to catch up on news and generally relax and enjoy each other’s company. Events that are often celebrated with a kaffemik include birthdays, anniversaries, marriages and the like but in the past a kaffemik was also used to celebrate things such as children catching their first animal or babies reaching six months old. “Kaffemik” means “coffee please” and at a kaffemik beverages such as tea and coffee are served, with tasty treats in the form of cakes and sweets also on offer. In many instances a place is defined by its people, so what better way to experience true Greenland than by sharing food and drink with the Nuuk locals. Not only will you get a glimpse into the domestic life of a
Greenlandic home but the kaffemik is also an excellent cultural exchange opportunity. You may be interested in the local culture but your hosts will be just as curious about yours! Enjoy a spectacular voyage around the Nuuk fiord, the second largest fiord system in the world. Humpback whales frolic in these waters from early June to October. These huge, intelligent marine mammals may weigh up to 30 tons but they really are the acrobats of the ocean, and often put on a spectacular show. The whales venture close to the city and are also entirely comfortable with the tour boats, allowing these to get real close to them. The humpback whale is a protected species, and Nuuk Tourism
makes an active contribution to the preservation of these gentle giants by recording the time, date and location of our whale sightings. Our records are then submitted to the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources. It’s not all whales though – there is plenty of other wildlife on view, including seals, seagulls, eagles and other forms of birdlife. This tour also affords a fantastic view of Nuuk, the mountain of Sermitsiaq and the surrounding islands.

Since the first wave of immigration via Thule around 4000 to 5000 years ago, the Inuits in Greenland have been dependent on nature’s resources in the form of fish, birds, land mammals and marine mammals. Hunting and fishing have therefore always been a question of survival in a country in which the summer is
short and the climate unsuitable for effective farming. This tour is a really authentic tour that provides great insight into the daily life of a Greenlandic hunter and fisherman (more often than not, they are both). In this tour you will experience the way in which hunters hunt at sea. The hunt will most often be for birds, including the Common Eider, King Eider, Common Guillemot, Kittiwakes, Canadian Geese and Arctic Grouse. Depending on the season, the hunt will also involve seals, Harbour Porpoises, as well as different kinds of fish such as Rockfish, Cod, Salmon, Catfish and Halibut. When going hunting you have to remember that this is a part of daily life in Greenland - not all the meat in Greenland homes comes from supermarkets. The people of Greenland are close to nature and view themselves as a natural part of the food chain, hence why they catch their food in its natural surroundings and not from a farm. The boats used on the tour are the same boats that
fishermen use each day, so you can experience authentic day-to-day Greenlandic culture. The boats can carry a maximum of four passengers so you can make the most of your tour in a quiet, intimate group that allows you to fully take in the natural splendour around you. The tour boats have all passed safety checks for seaworthiness carried out by the Danish Maritime Authority. Each boat also contains all the necessary safety and communications equipment which has also undergone stringent checks to ensure it is functioning properly.

Typically people fish for Arctic char at the mouths of rivers or at the boundary between rivers and lakes. As a rule, char are found where the concentration of food is greatest, the water is deep enough to cover their dorsal fins, and where the water is relatively still. You can get so close to the fish that you may be able to catch them with your bare hands after a short lesson.

Kangeq is a former settlement in the Sermersooq municipality of southwestern Greenland. It was a traditional fishing village, abandoned in the 1980s. The name of the settlements means “promontory” in the Greenlandic language. It was Hans Egede’s first residence when he arrived in Greenland and it was a desolate and quite primitive

This was one of the biggest political decisions in the country’s history and had a significant impact on many lives.

If you’re a nature enthusiast and looking for something that’s different from the norm when it comes to sightseeing, look no further than this eco-friendly tour which enables you to see the city on two wheels instead of two feet, concluding with a visit to the Institute for Natural Resources. As you travel through the city you will get a real feel for the sights and sounds it has to offer. Capture some photos of the contrast in architecture between modern buildings and picturesque neighbourhoods. Your guide will provide fascinating information on the cultures, history and daily goings-on in the city and if you have any questions, your friendly guide will be more than happy to answer them for you. There will be opportunities to stop and take photos, so don’t worry that it will be “Go! Go! Go!” without a chance to enjoy the sights around you.
Your cycling route will lead you to the Institute of Natural Resources, which was established in 1995 with a focus on sustainability and safeguarding biodiversity. Once you’ve experienced aspects of the city related to people, the Institute provides an insightful opportunity to experience the natural wonders that Greenland has to offer, as well as how these wonders are being protected.

Fancy experiencing the city via a short bike tour, with a refreshing beverage and some local chit chat at the end of the tour? The short bike tour and kaffemik offers just that. You will experience everything that is included in the long bike tour, except for the visit to the suburban residential areas of Nuussuaq and Qinngorput (this is only included with the long bike tour). Highlights include travelling through the Old Harbour area and lots of opportunities for photos, as well as a knowledgeable guide who will
provide insights into the past and present history and culture of the city. Following on from the bike tour, you will be welcomed into the home of a local Greenlander to enjoy a hot drink and tasty treats. A kaffemik is a social gathering (traditionally to celebrate a family event like a birthday or marriage) where news is exchanged and people can catch up with each other in a relaxing, fun environment whilst enjoying drinks such as tea or coffee along with snacks like cakes. The kaffemik is the perfect opportunity to experience local culture and to see the national costume. Also don’t forget that the locals want to hear about your culture too, so it’s a great chance to swap stories!
