A BRITISH CLASSIC Our founder, Jacob Schweppe was a jeweller and scientist with a real thirst for curiosity. In 1783 he invented the first ever process of capturing and bottling bubbles, and from this carbonation system, Schweppes Soda Water was born - the world’s first ever soft drink. Thanks to Jacob, Britain has been enjoying the superior taste of Schweppes mixers for over 200 years.

THE SCHWEPPES FOUNTAIN Schweppes is an iconic British brand, and has been the drink of choice for generations. It was the official drink of Prince Albert’s Great Exhibition in 1852, where over a million bottles were enjoyed. Schweppes supplied its drinks throughout the day, and installed a giant fountain in the atrium that pumped soda water from its fonts. Schweppes was the first drinks brand to partner with an event and the fountain has been commemorated on the bottle’s design ever since.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CARBONATION Carbonation is the most important aspect of any mixer. Did you know that over 80% of what we taste is driven by aroma? And it’s the carbonation ‘or effervescence’ that triggers your ‘olfactory system’ - or sense of smell. This is because the bubbles in your drink capture the flavour of the spirit and then release the aroma when they burst. Our obsession with bubbles ensures that they are always high in number, small and longer lasting, delivering an enhanced experience which lasts the whole drink through. With the signature effervescence of Schweppes you can really enjoy your favourite gin.

THE SKITTLE BOTTLE Jacob Schweppe understood the importance of carbonation and he dedicated his life to mastering the secret of perfect effervescence. He created a unique torpedo shaped bottle to retain his precious bubbles and to ensure the best tasting experience. It was originally closed with a natural cork and designed to lie on its side, so the cork remained wet and would expand securely into place. Inspired by our past, we decided to re-design our bottle to reflect Jacob Schweppe’s original design. To add a more refined edge and modern look, we collaborated with a French university to better understand how the champagne bottles preserve fizz. The result is our elegant new skittle bottle, designed to enhance Schweppes’ superior effervescence and ensure the perfect pouring experience.

KOKORO GIN BAR C

An uncle in Japan, with a home in the mountains, inspired this gin with a special difference; Kokoro Gin uses sansho berries, a Japanese delicacy with a strong flavour of citrus, pine and pepper. GET THE INSIDE SCOOP AT FISHERS GIN WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE FISHERS GIN?

To create a gin flavoured with exceptional native British botanicals; plants rich with historical precedent in brewing and distilling that have been neglected, several have a coastal distribution which we specifically wanted for Fishers as it is a coastal product. Our intention was, using ethical enterprise to create a gin that speaks of the Suffolk coast, using sustainably foraged wild botanicals where appropriate, and ‘in house’ organically grown British botanicals where appropriate.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE FISHERS GIN?

Complex, delicate, richly flavoured and smooth. Because of this surprising depth of flavour it’s at its best sipped neat. Alternatively when mixed with a very light or neutral tonic it makes an excellent G&T.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE FISHERS NET BOTTLE DESIGN?

The Suffolk Coast is still home to some of the last beach launched fishing vessels in the UK, who are responsible for the amazing range and availabilty of so much fantastic seafood in the county, so it is a nod to them and to our coastal heritage.

HEAD BOTANIST IS AN UNUSUAL JOB ROLE, WHAT DOES YOUR DAY TO DAY CONSIST OF?

All sorts of things. Sometimes I am researching, sometimes foraging botanicals, or preparing and distilling them. Other times I am working on herb cultivation, researching land, sourcing equipment or reading historical records. Sometimes talking to the public at gin events,

sometimes travelling to uncover obscure or forgotten botanicals for background, or for up and coming products.

WITH THE BOTANICALS BEING FORAGED, DO YOU EVER HAVE ANY PROBLEMS FINDING THE ONES YOU NEED?

My goodness yes! There are many problems relating to finding them, getting permissions, assessing the populations, accessing them at the right time of year and then preparing them whilst still in peak condition. Some of our botanicals are rare and care needs to be taken to ensure that the populations they come from are not depleted. We have landowner’s permission in all cases, and carefully follow BSBI and EN guidelines for all foraging. To support demand for Fishers Gin we grow some rarities of our own as well, to ensure that we do not impact wild populations. We grow our botanicals organically, and eschew intensive methods in order to protect the rich flavours that they should impart.
