01 CONCAVE - CONVEX Chinese culture design project

The design was for Artistic Palace, Chinese Arts & Crafts Co. Ltd. The products should be designed by using elements in Chinese culture, and the material should be wood, ceramic or both. I got the inspiration frome the tenon and mortise joint (we call“Sunmao�in Chinese). Academic / Individual work Nov.2011 - Dec.2011


BACKGROUND

CONCAVE-CONVEX is designed for Artistic Palace, Chinese Arts & Crafts Co. Ltd. The products should be designed by using elements in Chinese culture, and the material should be wood, ceramic or both. The tenon and mortise joint (we call “Sunmao” in Chinese) is a way of joint in chinese antique furnniture and architecture, which is firm and invisible.


CONCEPT

CONCAVE-CONVEX is consist of four parts, three containers and a wooden slideway.I tried to use the tenon and mortise structure to connect the two dierent materials.


FREEWHEELING

The three containers are in different sizes, and you can put them to the position you like of slideway or take them off to clean them.

ENVIRONMENT

The three containers can be vases when the Concave-Convex is installed in the bedroom. You can also use them to drink water in the office, or brush your teeth in the bathroom.

This project focuses on both Chinese and Swedish cultures. I get the inspiration from the Chinese furniture and patterns and the Swedish typical candle holders in Christmas as well. Academic / Individial work Nov.2012 - Jan.2013


BACKGROUND

I would like it to be both Chinese and Swedish. I get the inspiration from the Chinese furniture and patterns and the Swedish typical candle holders in Christmas as well. The main target group is Swedish people.

What will happen when Chinese elements meet the Swedish design style?

CONCEPT

It can be divided into seven parts which are possible to be used in both separate and unite situation, and they can be reassembled to be whatever you like. I choose three classic colors—red, black and white. Typical red in China stand for joy. About the materials, it can be made of wood with coat of paint and metal bracket.


03 “NEXT!”

Portable speaker design project

The workshop with JBL Harman aimed to identify design opportunities in China which is regarded as the most potential emerging market in the world. One topic I choose to work with is about how JBL portable speaker will take part in China. And design concept should be fit into branding and design language of JBL. My design focuses on senior citizens who dance, sing and exercise every day in the parks. Academic / Individual work Apr.2013 - May.2013


・CONCEPT It is for the retired people who dance, sing and exercise every day in the parks. They need to choose a specific song for dance from hundreds of songs in the storage card before they dance. So it has three modes for different situations, one is for listening music at random, another is for choosing the specific song, and the third is for remote operation.

・BACKGROUND Chinese old people like the park. They can dance, sing and exercise together. These social activities make up most of their daily life, and it is also the most happiest time for them. How amazing it is that many of them look 10 years younger!

REQUIREMENT ・FUNCTION In the park, you can see the speaker everywhere--hanging on the tree or fence, putting on the ground, hiding in

the pocket and so on.The elders have to make full use of the environment to place the speaker. The sounds from different speakers may interfere one another. In a group, the music can’t be heard clearly at a distance. It is not easy to choose the songs you want. The elders need to find the number of the song in a list and use the controller to dail and play it. Besides, we were told that they want longer battery life and better quality of tone but smaller size to carry with.

・RESEARCH OBSERVATION & INTERVIEW: Nowadays senior citizens are really different from the old times. They're enjoying social life in the park and being effected by new technology such as iPhone.

Brand-based pen design project

This is a project to design a pen to be a continuation of a series of a brand, or start a new series which can be identiďŹ ed with brand characteristic. I chose the German brand Schneider to analyze . And the pen models were made by 3D printer Academic / Individual work Jun.2013 - Jul.2013

The customers are able to change almost any part of the pen with predeďŹ ned options to be a unique one. And they can even choose where to print the logo.

Library improvement design project

The project was cooperate with Hammarkullens Library in the suburb of Gothenburg, Sweden and involves the areas of visual communication, interior/room and product. CONCEPT

The bottom two shelves should be removed to create more space for hiden seats. The seats can always be mini shelves for small books and CDs, sometimes be stairs for children, sometimes be chairs for everyone.


STRUCTURE

HOW IT WORKS

① When it is under the shelves, it is ready to be moved. ② When the up part is down, wheels can be locked. ③ It can also be moved when it is ready to be stairs. ④ It can’t be moved in order to be safe.


06 PIECEFOLD

Real commercial brand project

Inspired by Origami, Piecefold Wallet is a designer fashion brand based on e-commerce. All products are made of German waterproof kraft paper. http://www.piecefold.com

・CONCEPT As young Chinese designers, we see a luxurious shopping trend in the rapid developing society. Overpriced

and poor-functional things are bought for personalization and showing off. Piecefold is a functional, unique, moderate fashion for young generation and shows their attitude to the life. Inspired by Japanese origami, wallets are made only by folding.

・FEATURES No glue, no stitching, one piece of paper are the 3 basic rules of Piecefold. Each wallet is folded by a laser-cut German waterproof kraft paper, which is also tear-resistant. The material and folding method make it extremely durable and environmental friendly.


・DEVELOPMENT Designing of folding method and laser-cut drawing are the hardest part for designers at the

beginning. Finally 2 best prototypes were chosen from 5. After several iteration of testing and reviewing, the final designs were confirmed by team. Each designer is responsible for diffrenrent aspect of product according to their personal expertise. Two for product developing, one for website building and another one takes charge of marketing strategies and photography. Team meeting is hold once a week for reviewing the development together.


& PROMOTING ・BRANDING 1.Platforms

Piecefold has a carefully designed website which links to Taobao, the biggest e-commerce platform in China. Customers see the products on our website and review the comments on Taobao and finally pay by Alipay. This loop makes the shopping so easy and the website helps us stand out from ordinary goods from Taobao. We also create a Wechat and a Weibo promoting account. By sharing and endorsing the promotion on the social media, sales volume grows quickly. At the same time, we are also exposed on traditional media like The Bund Pictorial. On the other hand, we work with some design retail stores as well.

2.Fashion

As young oriented fashion accessory, cool and different are necessary. Design thinking and branding are used into every segment of product to improve the value. We invited 2 cool models and carefully made the photography, together with sharp slogans, making it very eye-catching in a professional way. We are claimed to be young, unique, cool, concerning environment and moderate. Features like pure folding and tear-resistant paper are attractive to the audience.

・ACHIEVEMENT Till the end of 2014, Piecefold were sold over 400 pieces. It is available at www.piecefold.com.

・SELF-REFLECTION Piecefold was a great experience for individual designers to challenge from design to commerce. Team work is extraordinary. Every designer shows his personal expertise. It is never so smooth to make everyone align when making decisions, but working with disagreements, listening to others, learning to compromise are the most remarkable experience for me in this project.


07 ESCORTING

Board game design project

“ I love the game in which you can talk a lot with each other. I prefer a game with easy rules and less props.” “ I like the game with more body motion and competition which can create a great fun and the sense of being a winner.” “ I enjoy the process of winning a game, I prefer more challenges in a game which requires to use some strategy to win the game.”

PRODUCT ANALYSIS

・Most of the boardgames is easy to play in front of computer. ・Except some role play games, most games are lack of communication. DESIGN OBJECTIVE

Design a game that cannot be played on computer.

Body Activity ・Physical& The boardgame must have physical motion, which is supposed to be a very

important part of the game. Thus, it would be clearly different from computer games.

・Participation Making every player involve in every turn, in case some player have nothing to do but waiting

in other’s turn. Provide a chance for Chinese young people to leave their mobile phones away and enjoy the pleasure games.

Strategy& Diplomacy ・Luck, The game should involve both luck and strategy, it should find a banlance

between skills and randomness. Another important aspect of some games is diplomacy, that is, players making deals with one another. Easy diplomacy involves convincing and teamed up against.

・Efficiency It should be a game with easy rules which can be understand and spread quickly. Also it will

not need a long time to play, so people can have much more fun in a short time, and try their best to win.


The idea was to create a playable game designed for young people play together in physical.

“Flick Finger”

It is the kind of action that could create a variety of posiblilities, and have a lot of fun as we all have such experience when we ware young. Also, it is the kind of action that can not be replaced by computer.

Flick game pieces and directly hit opponents’ game pieces represents a successful robbery.

To Begin: Each player has own escort agency, 6 goods to be escorted, a escort to protect goods, a robber to rob others' goods and a storage to store successful delivered goods. To Win: The first player/team who have 3 goods in the own storage wins.

08 TAKEAWAY Fixpert social project

As a program of our“ User Research” course, we join the Fixperts Project and find a small chophouse near our university as our fixpartner. We help them to fix their delivery box. BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION

ANALYSIS FIX PARTNER: Huizhou chophouse

Take away package: rice, soup, and one dish Main customer: students of Tongji University Vehicle: electric bicycle One-way time:10-15 min Meal delivery frequency: 20--40 times / day Meal delivery volume: 8--10 sets / time In my university, many students like to order lunch delivery, for they can order online and wait in their domitories. The restaurants they prefer to choose are mostly the small reataurants near campus, for the price is lower and the waiting time is shorter. Those small restaurants cannot afford other vehicles than electronic bicycle, and mostly use a delivery box to hold the lunch boxes.

HOW DO THEY DEAL WITH THE DELIVERY BOXES ? CURRENT SITUATIONS

FIXED BEHIND THE BACK SEAT Easy to get dirty

The boxes are exposed to wind and rain, they need to be washed very often.

Run back and forth

The clerk needs to run many times to take out all the lunch boxes.

PLACED ON THE FRONT FOOTREST Not easy to carry

One box with a maximum occupancy of about 10--12 lunch boxes is heavy..

Easy to fall

If the box is not fixed on the vehicle, it is easy to fall and spill out.

NO PECULIARITY

NO PLACE FOR LEGS

There are a lot restaurants using the same delivery box. Customers can not tell them from the boxes.

There’s no fixation of the electric bicycle, so they had to put the box on the footrest in front of the seat so that the courier can take care of it and stop it from falling down while riding. However, there’s no place for the rider to put his feet, which make it uncomfortable for riding.

NO HANDLE

Huizhou chophouse’s takeaway bag is big and heavy because of the soup. The courier can not hold many bags at a time, which means taking the delivery box in can save a lot of time. However, their current box has no handle because the box is designed to be fixed on electric bicycle. Without handle, the heavy box is hard to carry.

NO FIXATION

here’s no fixation on the electric bicycle because they always need to take away the box. The big and heavy box which is placed temporarily on the narrow footrest can not keep balance, especially when riding fast and making a turn.


USER EXPECTATION

REFORM PLAN

The owner of Huizhou chophouse I want a bigger and stronger box which can be filled with more lunch boxes. Also I hope to have a striking LOGO on the delivery box which can help my box differs from other restaurants’,and I hope it can be an advertisement to the students. I still need the delivery box to be movable. it is hard to wash it and staying in the rain will make it get dirty more easily. The courier of Huizhou chophouse What I need mostly is a handle. I also hope the box to be movable as it is now, which will save me from keep running back and forth. But I need a fixation on the electronic bicycle to help me fix the box.

HANDLE

“ I like the color of the delivery box very

me change this box. it is different from the one we bought. Thank you very much !!

The Velcro straps device on the metal fixation is the key to fix the box. We tested its strength of the device to make sure its protection is working.

We added a comfortable handle for the delivery box, so the courier can easily carry the box away. Also, the handles need to keep clean, so, it is removable for frequent wash.

FIXATION

We welded a metal fixation on the eletric bicycle behind the back seat. The new box could be fixed on it. The box will never fall again.
