To create this scarf I utilized the Arashi shibori technique, which is also known as the pole-wrapping shibori. “Arashi” is the Japanese word for storm. The patterns are always on a diagonal in arashi shibori, which suggest the driving rain of a heavy storm.
I bound the scarf cloth very tightly by wrapping thread up and down a pole. Then I scrunched the scarf on the pole. The result was a pleated cloth with a design on a diagonal. After I dipped the whole pole in indigo die for several times in a row, to increase the dark blue color.
Materials: silk scarf, natural indigo dye.
