Art is made from the soul. I feel that a day is not complete without something ‘artfully’ done! It is the landscape imagery and its deep space that I explore in my work by building up 30 to 40 layers of oil paints and mixed mediums. I apply very thin layers of oil paint to the wood board; adding texture, scraping the paint, dissolving areas and then rebuilding them as I construct the painting.
The removing process is as important as the layering. This ‘surface-tension’ eventually is transformed into a peaceful, subtle mix of texture and natural colors. I strive to accomplish a feeling of serenity not only as I paint, but for the viewer as well. My local surroundings as well as distant trips continue to inspire my artwork. You may see an influence of my travels to Italy, France, Portugal, Spain and Ireland. As well as my inspiring trips to Santa Fe, and of course my local surroundings in Wisconsin and Michigan. Skies, vast lands, colors and the light also inspire me and I am thankful for the beauty around me and the ability to transform it into my art.
Spring
Spring is a time of reflection for me in my artwork. A time for me to look back on the works that I created during a long productive winter. This recent series is based on reflections of Monet’s ponds and gardens in Giverny, France. I had been to Paris painting this spring and was inspired by the colors reflected in the still ponds of Monet’s gardens. Often times, the relections are as beautiful as the actual plantings. It is always good to take time to reflect and remember all the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Summer
Summer means color and energy to me. It also means the busy season at my gallery in Door County and all the good art energy that comes with it! Summer means playful times to me! Those who know me know that well. My “Crazy Days series was born of total playful moments, colors and experimentation in the studio. Totally abstract forms based on movement and fun. A wacky series that brings a smile to my face. My gorgeous water view off my deck at the gallery inspire so many paintings of water, horizons, and sunsets. My painting process of approximately 40 layers added and removed, is actually a very meditative way of working. It is because of these many layers of subtle color variations that I develop harmony in my work. Texture and color are strong elements in my work - always there, sometimes subtle.

Autumn
One of my favorite times of the year, autumn, is the time of falling leaves, cider pressing parties, turning inward and accepting that winter is on its way. The warm colors of the “Boat Texture” series were inspired by the peeled paint and worn surfaces of boats on shore from a recent trip to Ireland, as well as a friend’s boat that had its days on Isle Royale. Both are “close-up” and intimate looks at days gone by. The warmth of the fall color palette is always evident in my paintings during this time of year. Often times an artist cannot escape their environmental surroundings, as even subconsciously the seasons gently sneak their way into my art. Autumn is a most gentle time to start settling the soul and slowing down the pace of life.

Winter
Winter is a deep inward time when my gallery is closed for the season and most of my days are spent painting in my studio. It is during these days that my whole being can be focused on my work with little to no distractions. “When Wings Were Only a Dream” is a new series that came about when a friend was on holiday in Australia and sent me a beautiful photo of the beach. The colors were so serene and quiet! The exact moment that I received the photo, I happened to be snowshoing along the frozen shores of Lake Superior and was instantly intrigued by the pattern and line of the ice breaking up on the Lake. It was a combination of these two exact moments blended into a new series that focused more on contemplative lines as the ‘break-up of space’, but also introduced a whole new color palette to my work. Color selections that are more subdued, passive and contemplative which are exactly how I spend my winter days in the studio.

Ginnie Cappaert is a full time visual artist with a summer studio in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin and a winter studio in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Her surroundings of nature and her travels inspire and influence her oil and mixed media paintings on paper or wood panel. Ginnie has taken many workshops by various artists, but it is her intense studying of art history and just ‘experimenting’ that have broadened her personal techniques to art making. She works in oil and mixed media layering, adding and removing, many layers to each piece. It is this in-depth process that let’s subtle markings and layers emerge into the finished painting which is an abstracted minimalist version of a landscape. Peace. Serenity. Joy. Is what she would like to accomplish in her painting.
