THE SITE
THE SITE: KG BANGAU BANGAU, SEMPORNA, SABAH
KG BANGAU-BANGAU, SEMPORNA, SABAH.
LOCATED ON THE EAST COAST OF SABAH, SEMPORNA IS WELL KNOWN AS A DIVING PARADISE, AS WELL AS HOME TO THE WORLD’S FAMOUS SEAGYPSIES: THE BAJAU.
BAJAU SETTLEMENTS AT KG BANGAU-BANGAU ARE BUILT DENSELY CLOSED TO EACH OTHER. THESE STILT HOUSES, CONNECTED BY BRIDGES, FORM A HUGE NETWORK OF BAJAU SETTLEMENT FILLED WITH THE LIVELIHOOD OF SAMA BAJAU.
IMAGINATIVE CARTOGRAPHIC OF BORNEO TALES
THIS IMAGINATIVE CARTOGRAPHY IS A COMPILED STUDY OF THE SOCIOCULTURE AND MATERIALITY OF THE BAJAU COMMUNITY IN KG BANGAUBANGAU , SEMPORNA. THE MODEL IS COMPOSED OF SEVERAL LAYERS THAT FOCUS ON DIFFERENT ISSUES OF THE SITE. ZOOMING IN ON THE MATERIALITY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE, EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON THE INTERESTING YET VANISHING PATTERNS OF SAMA-BAJAU.

DIMINISHING OF BAJAU CULTURE
DUE TO GLOBALIZATION AND COMMERCIALIZATION, BAJAU’S COMMON RAW MATERIALS BECOME INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO OBTAIN; WHICH CAN FURTHER AFFECT THEIR ECONOMICAL ACTIVITIES. THE BAJAU ARE FORECED TO WORD HARDED FOR A LIVING, CAUSING THE ART OF CRAFTS TO DIMINISH AND DISAPPEAR. IN THE CASE OF SEMPORNA, NOT MANY TRADITIONAL TEXTILES AND POTTERY MAKING CAN BE FOUND.

IMPORTANCE OF BAJAU CULTURE THIS RESEARCH AIMS TO LOOK DEEPER INTO THE RICH CULTURE OF BAJAU ESPECIALLY THE PATTERNS THAT SYMBOLIZES THE ETHNIC. THE COMPARISON BETWEEN PREVIOUS MATERIALITY AND CURRENT SHOW THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PATTERN AND RAW MATERIALS ARE BECOMING LESS IN BAJAU’S DAILY LIVES. CULTURE HELPS TO SHAPE A COMMUNITY AND CAN BE IMPORTANT TO INTRODUCE THE ETHNIC TO THE REST OF THE SOCIETY TO ERADICATE STIGMA THAT THEY HAVE AGAINST THE BAJAU PEOPLE.
3
A MIDDLE POINT IS TO BE DISCOVERED BETWEEN THE LAND AND SEA, TO CREATE A SENSE OF LINKAGE BETWEEN THE BAJAU PEOPLE WHO TEND TO LIVE IN THEIR OWN WORLD BY THE SEA, AND THE REST OF THE WORLD THAT LIVE ON THE LAND.

CASE STUDIES, EXPERIMENTATION AND INSPIRATION
CASE STUDY: MAH MERI CULTURAL VILLAGE, PULAU CAREY
A SITE VISIT WAS MADE TO MAH MERI CULTURAL VILLAGE IN PULAU CAREY, KLANG TO PARTICIPATE IN A WEAVING WORKSHOP. THE MAH-MERI PEOPLE, ANOTHER INDIGENOUS GROUP IN PENINSULAR MALAYSIA, ARE ALSO WELL KNOWN AS “ORANG LAUT”, PEOPLE OF THE SEA. IN THIS SITE VISIT, IT WAS REALIZED THAT SOME OF THEIR WEAVING TECHNIQUES AND PATTERNS ARE INDEED QUITE SIMILAR TO THE BAJAU’S AND CAN BE USED AS A REFERENCE. IT WAS A INFORMATIVE CASE STUDY TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT MATERIALITY AND BASICS OF WEAVING, THAT WILL BE HELPFUL IN FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION IN MATERIALS.
“TRADITIONAL INTANGIBLE HERITAGE IS BEING THREATENED BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF AWARENESS OF ITS VALUE AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE TO NATIONAL IDENTITY AND PRIDE”
CASE STUDY: MAH MERI CULTURAL VILLAGE, PULAU CAREY - NIPAH ORIGAMI
TAUGHT WITH SOME BASIC ORIGAMI USING NIPAH LEAVES - A TOUGH MATERIAL THAT ARE COMMONLY USED AS THATCHED ROOVES.
CASE STUDY: MAH MERI CULTURAL VILLAGE, PULAU CAREY - MENGKUANG WEAVING
MENGKUANG ARE USED TO WEAVE MATS, WHICH IS AN IMPORTANT COMMUNAL ELEMENT FOR THE INDIGENOUS GROUP.
PROJECT INSPIRATION: YEE I-LANN’S “ZIG-A-ZIG AH!”
“A MAT IS ALSO WHERE PEOPLE COULD LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY BE LEVEL WITH EACH OTHER. BEING ON A MAT OR ON THE GROUND WITH OTHER PEOPLE IS A HUMBLING AND COMMUNAL EXPERIENCE THAT ENCOURAGES EVERYONE TO FEEL LIKE EQUALS.”
THESE PROJECTS REVIVE THEIR HERITAGE’S CRAFT AS A SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD THAT NOT ONLY BRINGS INCOME TO WOMEN BUT STOPS THEM FROM HAVING TO GO TO SEA TO FISH WITH THEIR HUSBANDS. THE ECONOMIC GROWTH AND REASSURANCE THAT THIS BRINGS TO EACH HOUSEHOLD, IN TURN, REDUCES EXCESSIVE FISHING FOR THE TOURIST MARKET ON THEIR ISLAND AND LETS MARINE LIFE REGENERATE.

TARGET GROUP: WANITA PULAU WOMADAL (WAPO)
WAPO IS AN NGO THAT HELPS BAJAU WOMEN OF PULAU OMADAL GENERATE INCOME BY SELLING THEIR HANDMADE WEAVED PRODUCTS. WITH THE FUND GENERATED, THEY ALSO PARTICIPATE IN OCEAN SAVING CAMPAIGNS.
Q&A: AN EMAIL INTERVIEW WITH MEMBERS OF WANITA PULAU OMADAL (WAPO) Is the culture of weaving slowly disappearing in the villages of Sama Bajau? If yes, what do you think is causing this problem, and what can we do to make the situation better?
n
s
01 In my opinion, weaving is disappearing because the new generation do not care about the culture. We can host workshops for schools and schools can have clubs related to weaving so that the culture does not disappear in the new generations.
02 They still exist.
In your opinion, is weaving one of the symbols of Sama Bajau? Is this heritage important to them?
01 It is important as a heritage.
02 It is important to help the community gain more income.
Is there any difference between houses that use natural materials and industrial materials?
01 Modern houses are made of rocks and concretes, traditional ones still use wood.
02 Traditional houses are made of firewood, living rooms are mostly connected to the kitchen with no rooms, walls and roofs made from coconut leaves, wet kitchen made from clay. They eat on small tables because there was no table in the past. The modern houses are more complete with rooms, gas in kitchen and dining table.
What are the most commonly used motif in weaving and where are they usually applied? Are there any rules to using the motifs?
01 The most commonly used motif is petak-petak (biscuit). There is no rules or principle applied in my knowledge.
02 The most commonly used motif is biscuit, nature related motifs (especially marine life, like crab walking pattern). These motifs are usually woven into mats.

THREE MOST COMMONLY USED MOTIF IN BAJAU WEAVING ARE OBSERVED, AND ‘KALINGOWAN’ MOTIF IS USED AS THE BASE PATTERN TO DEVELOP THE LAYOUT OF A NEW BAJAU SETTLEMENT TYPOLOGY, AS THE MOTIF CAN BE BROKEN DOWN INTO SEVERAL OTHER MOTIFS. USING A QUARTER OF THE MOTIF, THE SHAPE IS THEN SEGMENTED INTO DIFFERENT SHAPE TO HOUSE THE TRADITIONAL SPACES OF THE BAJAU SETTLEMENT. EACH LAYOUT CAN BE CONNECTED TOGETHER VIA AN ADJACENT SPACE, WHICH WILL ACT AS A COMMON SPACE TO CARRY OUT COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES, ESPECIALLY FOR THE WOMEN TO HELP EACH OTHER IN RESPECTIVE HOUSEHOLDS.
