Thevictimwillreceive aWhatsApportextmessagefromanoffenderonanunknownnumber impersonatingtheirchildren,alongthelines of “Himum,I’vechanged provider/lost/brokenmy phone -I’mtemporarilyusingthisnumberfornow”. Theconversationwilldevelop,beforetheoffender deceivesthevictimandrequestsmoneyforsome kindofemergency. Theseemergenciescanincludepaymentsthat need tobemadethatday,moneytopurchase a newphone,ormoneytopayanurgentbill. Theoffenderswillsaytheycannotaccesstheir ownmoneyastheyhavebeenlockedoutoftheir ownonlinebankingaccountaftergettingthenew phone. Oftentheoffenderwillrequest aphotoof acredit card,oratransferto abankaccountthattheywill purporttobeusingwhiletheycan’taccesstheir normal bankaccount. Once onetransferhasbeenmade,theoffender willfrequentlyrequestanothersumofmoney. Whiletherearecurrentlynoreportedpositive casesinGippslandatthetimeofprint,therehave been22casesofMonkeypoxrecordedelsewhere inVictoria. GRPHUOperationsDirector,AnneliesTitulaer saidMonkeypoxwasnot anewdiseaseandhad mainlybeentransmittedfrominfectedanimals topeople. Woodsideexpandedwithrichopportunitiesfor croppingandlivestockgrazingpredominating, increasingthetown’spopulation.Woodside PrimaryNo.1176wasbuiltinthe1870s, followedbythetownhallin1889and aCatholic churchin1904. Theearly1920ssawseveralpropertiesinthe Woodsideregionsubdividedintosmallerfarms, markingtheborderlinesfortheWoodsidehere today. In2006thepopulationofWoodsidehadgrown to267,andtheWoodsidePubwasunwavering initstestoftime,remainingtheepicentre,the truebluebeatingheartofthesmallregional town. Thencamethefires. Thelittletownwasdevastatedbythedeadly 2009BlackSaturdaybushfires,incinerating theWoodsidePostOfficeandWoodsideGeneral Store,leavinglittlemorethanblackened cinderedframes. Despitesufferingsomuchloss,Woodside beganrebuilding,hopefulandwithprospects, butrealitywasnotsokind. In2016,theWoodsideBeachHotelclosedits doorsafter170years,takingwithittheheart andsouloftheWoodsidecommunity.Untilnow. InNovember2021,an11-personsyndicate, includingdirectorClintHillas,ReddCatt SalecafeownerMattRaidal,starplayerof theWesternBulldogsJoshDunkleyand a clandestineFinancialReviewRich-Lister,signed theownershipcontracttotheWoodsidePub. Theinitiative isbeingledbytheschool’sagricultureteacher,LashayTricker,andappliedto theCollabor8program -whichitselfispartofthe BroadeningHorizonsprogram. First introduced totheschoolin2017,Broadening HorizonsisrunthroughtheLatrobeValley Authorityandaimstolinkschoolstudentswith industryandcommunitygroups. AccordingtoMsTricker,MaffraSecondary’s industrypartnersincludeWellingtonShire,Elders, Landcare,GippsDairyandAgricultureVictoria. AspartofCollabor8,thesepartnersposequestionsandchallengesthattheyfacetostudents, whothenworkingroupstofindsolutions. “Anumberofthepartnersposedthechallenge ofpreventing,managinganddealingwithFMD; theyspoketothestudentsaboutthehugeeconomic impactitwouldhaveonourlocalarea,”MsTricker explained. “Theproblemsolvingand designprocessisgreat forthestudentstoworkthrough;itencourages themtobuildempathy(for)otherpeopleandsee thingsfrom adifferentperspective. “Theyalsolearn arangeoftransferrableskills.”

Aspartofthe program,studentsdeveloped a rangeofdesignsforitemstopreventFMD,includingfootbaths,tyrecovers,andvehiclewashbays. Additionally,studentshavelearntfurtherabout FMDthroughMsTricker’sYear10Agricultural Scienceclass,wheretheywillcontinuetodiscuss farmbiosecurityingreaterdetail. AccordingtoheadofIndustryEngagement StuartQuigley,thecourseis adirectresponseto meetinganindustryneed.

“Afterextensivediscussionswithindustry,itwas identifiedthattherewas agapinthemarketand thattechnologywasadvancingfast,particularlyin thearea ofroboticmilkingmachines,” MrQuigley said. “TheexistingCertIIIinMechanicalEngineering wasadaptedandunitsimportedtosuittheneeds ofthe(dairy)industry.” OnesuchstakeholderwasLelyCente r Gippsland’sDanielleAuldist.
