Editors’ Note Spring is in the air and in the pages of the Spring Edition of our Girl Around Town Shopping Guide. And we’re psyched. Not only for warmer temps that the season brings or the outdoor activities we’re planning--and all the wardrobe options that go with them-- but for the flowers! Since neither one of us has much of a green thumb, we turned to gardening enthusiast, Mary Ann Rounseville for a primer, including tips on terrariums and her favorite Ryan Gosling meme (p. 27). What we lack in horticulture, we make up for in hostess-ing, and welcome some botanicals into our cocktail repertoire, care of Emily Welsh’s cocktail recipes on p. 35. Or why not celebrate the intoxicating fruits of a labor of love, just as Karina Schroeder did in her interview with the owner of Long Island’s Borghese Vineyard (p. 37). 3
After a few sips of spirits, we’re bold enough to take on flower pro, Jennifer Edward’s stunning signature displays, like the ones she created for the Paula Deen at the celeb chef’s home. (Photos, p. 41.) Spring cleaning just got easier with DIY design tips from Emily Butler (p. 12) that guide our clutter into attractive, stylish living areas. If you take your fashion cues from TV, check out Heather Campbell-Green’s Q&A with Hart of Dixie’s costume designer on page 22.

What’s my favorite thing about spring in NYC? Wearing opened-toed shoes again.
If I could buy only one item from this guide…: Definitely the Alice + Olivia Cady Cuff shorts! I live in shorts during spring and summer.
What excites me most about our Spring Guide? Featuring so many of our friends who are experts and enthusiasts in so many different areas of interest--style, entertaining, gardening. We love that we’re able to inspire other friends with great How-To’s for a more full, and wonderful, spring season.
Let’s be honest, does Houston actually have a spring, or does it go straight from mild winter to scorching summer? No, Houston doesn’t usually have a spring, but for some reason Mother Nature gave us one this year- which is definitely a change of pace down here; no one knows what to wear. I suspect this guide will help!
My favorite section? It’s a tie between Accessorize Around Town and Lingerie. While Leigh is charged with culling through everything under the sun to find the perfect items for almost every page, I get to focus on the sections I’m most passionate about. Cool bars & restaurants, and unmentionables.

Lori has been working her artistry magic as Global Pro Lead Artist at Smashbox for almost 10 years. When she’s not heading up the artistry team, she’s working Fashion Weeks from L.A. to Toronto and sharing studio secrets on Extra, The Today Show and beyond.
Get to Know Lori Drink of choice? A dirty martini with 3 blue cheese-filled olives. Favorite part of L.A.? Downtown, It’s almost a hidden treasure, super chic, very urban and smart. Thoughts on beauty being ‘only skin deep’? Makeup has a healing element. There’s something about making people feel great that’s more emotional than material.
Bronze smoky eye & red lip
Tip 1 I know people are sometimes afraid of blue eye shadow, but a really light wash of blue around the entire eye—including a slight drop shadow—is so modern for spring. I’ve been seeing blue for the season all over the runways. 8
Tip 2 You can’t go wrong with coral for spring. It’s a shade that just screams spring! If you do a very light wash on both your cheeks and lips, it’s pretty much universally flattering. And that overall monochromatic look feels current—just be sure to not use too much product, a light wash is all you need.
You can’t go wrong with coral for spring.
Smashbox Love Me collection
Tip 3 Even though it might not be a color combination people think of immediately, try pairing a bronze smoky eye with a classic red lip. Bronze is gorgeous and not too heavy for spring, and when you do the red lip with it, the look is super luxe—but still fresh to be appropriate for the season.

My first apartment in the city was a very small studio, so it was thrilling to move into a one bedroom this fall. I work from home, so creating a transitional space that is living-, working-, and entertaining-friendly was my first priority. I wanted the space to be comfortable, but highly functional, so it is no accident that I can pack up my computer and turn my Parsons desk into a serving space for parties and clear off my little fabric-covered stool for extra seating. I am drawn to prints and patterns and wanted to create a little bit of unexpected texture by combining them and making the petite space all my own.

From many recent conversations, it seems like most people are still under the impression that our skin hasn’t changed since high school. Even if your sense of humor hasn’t matured, we assure you, your skin has. Speaking with Emma Graves, founder of Between You & the Moon, I was pleasantly reminded that if our skin isn’t reacting to certain skincare items the way we want it to, it may be because we’re not paying attention to what it needs and caring for it in the way it is today, not like it was in high school. Anyone with curly hair who’s had their hair cut by a stylist who speacialized in straight-cut shags (or vice versa), understands that no matter the promise, we have to understand our indivdual traits and learn how to support our natural beauty, not suppress it. Which means that maybe you’re still overdrying your skin, when its crying out for the right type of moisture. Thankfully Emma is hand-crafting natural skincare products desgined to allow our skin to flourish in a suportive state, and not by forcing harsh ingredients.

One on One with Hart of Dixie Costume Designer Meredith Markworth Pollack
Click the pics to get the look
By Heather Campbell-Green Hart of Dixie is one of my favorite shows on TV, and the cast is always draped in eye candy galore. I had the privilege of speaking with one of the most sought-after costume gurus in Hollywood, Hart Of Dixie wardrobe stylist, Meredith Markworth Pollack, and she gave me the inside scoop on dressing Rachel Bilson and Jamie King for the show. From her process, to her favorite pieces, to the answer to something we all want to know: where do all those beautiful clothes go after the show? I got all of the details. Heather: Do you have a favorite character on the show that you like to dress? Meredith: Oh, that’s hard. It’s kind of just obvious, but I really enjoy dressing both Zoe and Lemon because they are two extremes. I think we all have a little bit of the uber feminine side that Lemon portrays. I love her floral pastels and fun costume jewelry. At the same time we can all relate to Zoe, too. She is so much fun to dress in a day-to-night working girl look, which makes both characters totally fun and easily relateable.
22
I really enjoy dressing both lemon and zoe because they are two extremes
Hart of Dixie: Costume Design Heather: Can you give me any inside memorable moments between you and the cast as it pertains to a wardrobe? Meredith: Yes! Probably the funniest moment was when we surprised Rachel in her fitting for the episode “Hell’s Belles.” She came into wardrobe and was supposed to wear a big red, hoop skirt and was like, “You are kidding me!?!” There are quirky story lines in Hart Of Dixie with random, funny costumes, I think the actors get caught off guard because they never know what they are going to walk into. Heather: You see racks and racks of clothes, how do you keep a fresh perspective and keep motivated? Meredith: Constantly having new inventory of clothes to choose from keeps things fresh. When we shop, we load up for three or four episodes at a time and then when it’s time to go shopping again we clear the racks. We love to see new pieces, new products and we always keep current with new designers and finding new people to work with. We love to support upcoming designers, so we’re constantly on the hunt. Heather: Do you have any emergency items you have with you at all times on set? Meredith: Yes definitely. Everything in TV moves very fast, you literally have five minutes to fix any problem that comes up!
23
Zoe’s emergency kit has two leather jackets, her three favorite pairs of jeans, all of her shoes, a couple great “Zoe” blouses and two killer black dresses. Lemon’s emergency kit is a couple grey J.Crew cardigans, two or three really beautiful McGinn floral dresses, all of her shoes and then a couple pairs of bright colored trousers.
Heather: Now what happens if the outfit doesn’t come together the way you thought it would? Meredith: Well you know everything is pretty much 100% decided before the morning of the scene, but, sometimes things happen and an alteration needs to be tweaked in the morning when we are throwing the dress on. If it’s just a little bit off, that’s when we run to the wardrobe truck and we have our emergency kit. It does happen, it’s not all perfect! Heather: I have a question that I received from a fan of the show on Twitter, and she wanted to know what happens to the clothes after they are used? Meredith: Two things happen: first of all we use a lot of samples on the show from designers who are generous enough to work with us, so a lot of clothes that you see them wearing we then return back to the designers. Anything we shop for, Warner Brothers owns and if we decide that we don’t need it any more, it goes into the Warner Brothers costume shop, which is a huge rental shop here on the lot. Running Game Tee & Bebe Jacket
Spring Training
By Jayme Lamm
As the boys head back to the gym to beef up for the upcoming football season, I thought it was time to do some beefing up on my game day wear. Parker Top
Running Game Clothing has become my go-to label for supporting our Houston teams. Oh, BTW: Use code THEBLONDESIDE at checkout for 10% off.
Sometimes licensed apparel gets old, so why not wear a shirt with birds to show your team support for the Philadelphia Eagles. I don’t even know what kind of birds these are, but it works...for me. 25
Footballs are made of leather, so are dresses. Even as a tomboy, it’s nice to dress up from time to time, but not sure I’d recommend rocking this ensemble at a stadium.

During winter months most people dream about summer vacations and beachfilled days. I, like most rabidly possessed gardeners, dream about dirt under the nails, muscle aches from weeding, and of course, about what seeds, bulbs and plants to buy for the coming growing season. These are some of my top picks for urban and suburban gardeners alike:
Gardening 101 By Mary Ann Rounseville
Dahlias: Now is the time to think about bulbs to plant in the spring for gorgeous summer blooms. My taste in flowers usually tends to the wild wispy blooms, but I can’t deny the sheer power and beauty of a dinner plate Dahlia bloom bigger than a small child’s head. If you’re lucky enough to live in Dahlia country, the Pacific Northwest, then you might be familiar with growers Swan Island Dahlias. They will ship their magnificent bulbs anywhere in the country- just make sure to check the growing instructions on their website for conditions in your area. Terrariums: If you have limited space and questionable green thumb skills, Victorian terrariums have made a raging come back. You can create your own mini paradise in a just about any glass container from an 27

antique cloche to a light bulb. Sprout Home is a great materials resource and if you live in New York or Chicago, they offer terrarium design classes. Vegetables: For those gardeners who find there’s nothing more satisfying than eating and sharing the literal fruits of your labor, a fellow gardener tipped me off to Laurel, aka “The Crazy Tomato Lady.” After buying Laurel’s tomato plant seedlings last year, I can concur, she is nothing short of a tomato genius! She grows over 100 organic varieties of heirloom tomatoes and if you want the perfect summer tomato, spend a little extra and buy from Laurel direcly at heirloomtomatoplants.com. Oh, By the Way: Whether I’m planting flowers, herbs, potatoes, or vegetables, my favorite place to buy seeds from hands down is Seed Savers Exchange. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and sharing of heirloom and open-pollinated seeds. From the Paris market carrots to the Empress of India Nasturtium, you get quality seeds that contribute to preserving your garden heritage. It doesn’t hurt either that their organic seeds are some of the best priced ones out there.
Happy planting! 28

My Favorite things Each of us is amazing and powerful. When you allow yourself to be quiet and listen long enough to feel it, all is possible.
Meaghan Kennedy Townsend is the charismatic founder of L.A.’s state-of-the-art yoga and spinning studio Up Dog Fitness, with a long list of celeb clients who clamor for her chaturanga. More than that, Meaghan happens to be a close friend and our favorite yogi. Her programs are tailored to her clients’ individual fitness goals and developed to cultivate self-esteem & empowerment. Can’t get to one of her classes? No prob! Her training videos ranked as iTunes’ most popular yoga download.
Manduka Mat
I love yoga (of course!) and my favorite mat is manduka. I’ve been a devotee of their black mat PRO ...but manduka now has the PRO black surf. It’s the same great mat and now it is pretty, too!
New Balance Vibram Shoes
When these first came out they were five-toed and just so not cool, but now they come in many fun colors, are so cute and great for your posture.
Skidless Towel
I can’t do yoga without yogitoes Skidless. I love all their colors; the peacock is made from recycled bottles. How cool that those bottles are absorbing my sweat?!
Chocolate
What girl doesn’t love chocolate? And how about chocolate with ever-so-healthy matcha green tea and soothing peppermint like Fearless Chocolate (and they give back!).
Flowers 31
Orchids make any room elegant. Roses, lillys and gardenias just mezmorize my nose.

Silvermoon Chocolates Superfood Raw food artist, chocolatier and feel-good-foods expert, Stacey Aradhana Silvermoon, creates alchemical blends of superfoods that invigorate the palate and lift the spirit using the magical properties of raw cacao. Which means that these innovative medicinal raw chocolate creations are actually nutritious.
With a deep reverence for the cacao plant and other superfoods, Silvermoon Chocolates are made from the finest raw, organic, dairy-free, fair-trade, and nutritionally intact ingredients, and use the knowledge that food is medicine. We were so intrigued by these beautiful, healthful creations that we asked Stacey to tell us more about the nutritional benefits of her superfood-packed chocolate.
If this is medicine, we’d like a prescription! 32
The Medicine Balls peaked our interest. Can you tell us a bit about them? For the Medicine Balls, I infuse a special blend of immunity-enhancing medicinal herbs into the base of cacao, almond butter and coconut butter. The blend includes cat’s claw, camu camu, maca, pau d’arco, goji, milk thistle, bee pollen, raw honey, Infinity Greens™, hempseeds, and a golden berry center. They’re creamy and delicious! Ok, you’re going to have to give us a 101 on these superfoods can you tell us a bit about them and what they do? Sure!

All of this sounded a bit overwhelming, so we asked Stacey for an easy recipe that we could make at home to include all of these super ingredients, and behold:
Stacey Silvermoon’s Superfood Smoothie Formula
{Click on each ingredient to purchase online} 1 Young Thai Coconut (water and meat) 1 ½ pints Blueberries 1 c. Water (add more if needed) ¼ c. Borghese Vineyard 37
When Philadelphia-based wine connoisseurs Marco and Ann Marie Borghese discovered that Long Island’s oldest vineyard was for sale, they leaped at the exciting opportunity. Thirteen years into their wine-making venture, Borghese Vineyards continues to be a cultural landmark of the North Fork. After catching my eye at the Union Square farmer’s market, I spoke with co-owner Ann Marie to learn more about her experiences as a vigneron.
How did you wind up purchasing the vineyard? Back in 1998 we were on vacation in South Fork, Long Island and we happened to take a drive across to North Fork to go wine tasting. At this time the place was known as Hargrave Vineyards. We were talking with the previous owner and she said ‘oh, it’s for sale.’ At first we thought she was talking about the wine, but she said no- the vineyard. You were living in Philadelphia at the time- what made you decide to make such a life change? My husband was looking for a lifestyle change. We had a wonderful life- everything was lovely except for the fact that his business shifted from being in Philadelphia to being in New York. He was basically commuting every day, and he couldn’t do it anymore. Marco also grew up on thousands of acres in Italy. When he came here he saw this vineyard and it was reminiscent of his childhood. I had never slept a night in the country, but I was game to try it. Is working at the vineyard now your full-time career? Yes, it’s even more than full-time, it’s 24-7. We live right on the property, and there’s always something going on, which is good because there’s always a family presence. And people enjoy that- guests really want to meet the people behind a real production. Do you offer wine tasting? We have the Borghese classic tasting- which is five wines. We have an oak white, full-bodied white, a rosé, a light red wine, and an older, heavier oak red wine. We try to approach everything from an education standpoint- educating you on your pallet, so you can pick wine Borghese Grapes

it’s even more than full-time, it’s 24-7... with confidence. We really want people to understand what they like, and we want to get you to slow down and savor life. How many wines do you make total? We have 19 different wines from seven different grapes. Some are blended, some are straightforward and some are different levels of the same grape. Can visitors actually see your vineyards, your production? Yes, we do tours every Saturday at 1p.m. My husband takes you through the whole facility, he explains the production, and then you go back up to the tasting room. When you leave you really know what you’re doing, you have a good sense of understanding the basics of wine. How has your life changed since you began this business? This is my 13th year here. Having been a city girl, I always traveled and had the ability to be mobile. When I got to the farm, I had to be here all the time. That was challenging for me, but after a while I started to adapt. It gave me great appreciation; I realized how much work it is and how hard it is to produce something. Borghese Vineyards wine can be purchased through their website. They also have a stand every Friday at the Union Square market, and alternate Saturdays at the Union Square market and the Brooklyn Grand Army Plaza market. Underwater Hydrangeas
When placed underwater, the watercolor-hued blooms are juxtaposed with brown gnarly stems and become a stunning centerpiece. Set next to the glow of a candle to make the masterpiece come to life!
Select the flowers All parts of a hydrangea look beautiful underwater. Include the woody section of the stem along with its leaves and petals. Look for branches that are as gnarly and cool as possible and keep

attached.
Choose a vase Clear vases display this look most effectively. Cylinders are my favorite as they are so elegant, and I love presenting many vases together, which I liken to a botanical study: a single variety plant is on display and each element of that plant--petals, leaves and stems--is featured and celebrated.
Cut branches Feature the stems prominently; measure so they reach the bottom of the vase and cut definitively.
create tiers With very tall vases, you can cut different tiers of hydrangeas. Take half of the flowers and cut the stems so that they touch the base of the vase while the top of flower hits just below the water line. Then, cut the second half of the hydrangeas at a height where their stems touch the bottom of the vase and their blooms reach only as high as the middle of the vase. (Check out the next page to see!)

Question I have hydrangea in my garden, how do I use it for a centerpiece? How to cut: Use pruners or a sharp knife to cut hydrangea blooms early in the morning, when the air is cool and the blooms are still hydrated. They’re at their peak because they’ve just awakened from their beauty sleep! Where to cut: Just above the point where the stem turns from green to ‘woody.’

Flower preparation: Lightly blot dew off with a paper towel. Droplets of water magnify the sun’s rays and cause burning, which is especially important if you’re planning to use them at an outdoor, daytime event.
How to: Composite Flower
expert tip: mix colors & flower Varieties, to create patterns with the petals’ colors and shapes.
My signature creation is the Composite Flower: a deconstructed bloom or blooms, re-constructed to create a larger than life fantasy flower!
Select the flowers You’re creating an awesome blossom from many smaller blooms, so you’ll need a couple types.
the Main flower The center can be made from almost anything you want; a cluster of nerine lilies, pincushions, succulents or simply a single lily.
Extra petals
1. I use the cardboard center of a roll of ribbon. If you want something bigger, use a piece of firm cardboard, draw a circle, and cut at your desired diameter. Then, cut a small hole in the center. It should be just big enough for your stem(s) of your main flower to fit through.
Use a hardy variety flower that depetals easily and beautifully, like roses, peonies, cymbidium orchids or lilies.
2. Cover the template in leaves to camouflage the cardboard.
prepartion
4. Carefully desconstruct other flowers--removing their petals carefully--and organize petals by size: large, med, small.
Cut short the stems of flowers to be used for their petals only. All stems should be placed in sugar water for 8 hours to give them maximum hydration.

Create a Template
Then, attach wire to inner circle of the cardboard template. The wire should be long enough to wrap around the full length of stem of the main flower(s). 3. Stick the stem of the main flower(s) through the whole, and wrap the wire around.
5. Using cold or hot glue, select the smallest petals and glue them to the cardboard, closest to the center flower, working your way out. Continue in a circular pattern, using the medium and large petals until your template is completely covered.
wow!
Leigh’s Spring Favorites I never understood the concept of spring fever until I moved to New York City. The sight of sunshine after brutal snow storms really is enough to make you run out of your house in shorts when it’s 55 degrees outside.
I’m dying for a piece of artwork to hang over my couch and these amazing abstracts are right up my alley.
Though things in Houston are a tad different. The new season doesn’t make me long for tank tops and flip flops because–let’s be honest–we wear those year-round. Spring in Houston is all about Out with the Old, In with the New. The Christmas gifts are paid off, and it’s time to indulge in things I’ve been longing to buy that make my life just a bit prettier than it already is.

I am certain I could live in this scarf – it’s a classic.
Mary’s Spring Favorites
Totally justifiable. Frye boots last forever.
SHOES! Even after 5 years in New York, my shoe wardrobe lags behind to my LA days, when I could get away with only flipflops, cute athletic kicks and some strappy sandals. Which is to say that my collection needs some significant upgrading. Springtime in the North East is an especially interesting time for footwear; we still need boots, but we’re dreaming of sock-free days. Whatever the finiky forecast, these styles work in this glorious time between the cold of winter and the steamy days soon to come next season. So right this moment, these are the styles I’m drooling over and dreaming of. (Whether or not I can afford them!)
