January 2012

Letter To Family And Friends Of Girlfriends Talk From Founder and Editor-in Chief

Janice L. Carter

I can proudly say “Happy Anniversary to Girlfriends Talk Magazine “. It has been a trying year for me. A year full of uncertainties, let downs and disappointments. I couldn’t help but to express it at times because it is apart of who I am and what Girlfriends Talk stands for “REAL PEOPLE, REAL ISSUSES, REAL TALK”! As you can see I made it, January 5th completes my second year. That’s a big accomplishment for me. Although things didn’t go exactly as planned I still accomplished a lot. Its crazy but flattering how people stop me and ask “am I that lady that do the magazine?” Or say “I seen you from some where before” or invite me to be apart of their events because they appreciate my movement and the positive vibe I carry. Most of all I’m happy I didn’t give up. I received numerous letters of encouragement that touched my heart. Mostly from people who needed to be the one being uplifted. I have received great response, great ideas and articles from people who are incarcerated. I even received a gift, a picture of myself hand drawn by Yusef. I appreciate it all! Also “Happy Birthday” to myself, another joyous occasion I’m learning to appreciate. I don’t know what 2012 may hold for me but I do know my whole attitude will be different about each and every new day. I hope you will continue to support me and keep me in your prayers. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Sincerely, Janice L. Carter

The Only Woman Electrocuted in Georgia's Electric Chair

? w o n K u o Y Did

Such is the story of Lena Baker, an African-American mother of three, who was electrocuted at the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville. She was convicted for the fatal shooting of E. B. Knight, a white Cuthbert, Georgia mill operator she was hired to care for after he broke his leg. She was 44 and the only woman ever executed in Georgia’s electric chair. For Baker, a Black maid in the segregated south in the 1940’s, her story was a tough sell to a jury of 12 white men. And rumors that she was romantically involved with victim E. B. Knight did not help. Her murder trial lasted just a day, without a single witness called by her court-appointed lawyer. She was convicted and sentenced to death. John Cole Vodicka, director of an Americus-based inmate advocacy program known as the Prison and Jail Project, said Knight had kept Ms. Baker as his "virtual sex slave." She was his paramour, she was his mistress, and, among other things, his drinking partner. If you read the transcript and have any understanding of black-white relations, Black women were often subjected to the sexual whims of their white masters, their white bosses, or some white man who had control over their lives or the lives of their families. "Here is one who resisted and paid the price.”

Lena Baker (June 8, 1901 – March 5, 1945)

The undertaker who brought her body back to Cuthbert buried her in a grave that went unmarked for five decades, until the congregation of Mount Vernon Baptist Church raised $250 for a concrete slab and marker. Relatives are still trying to clear her name with the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole. Lena Baker, who had a sixth-grade education, stated publicly her innocence to the very end. “What I done, I did in selfdefense," she said in her final statement. "I have nothing against anyone. I am ready to meet my God.” A novel, The Lena Baker Story, authored by Lela Bond Phillips, chronicles her life. This book was the basis for a screenplay by actor/director Ralph Wilcox filmed in 2007 in Southwest Georgia. The film, also entitled "The Lena Baker Story," stars Tichina Arnold in the title role, Peter Coyote, Beverly Todd and Michael Rooker.

JHA JHA

Actress , Songwriter, Rapper Natoya Handy is not just sitting back crying over spilled milk nor is she waiting on a hand out, She is definitely a "GET IT GIRL" making her own moves and making things happen, This head strong female rapper has her priorities straight and it 's a different ball game this time around. Jha Jha formerly affiliated with a well known group is paving a lane of her own. She holds her own title that cant be taken and she is demanding respect all around the world. Her grind is treacherous, she appear small but her desire to reign one of the best to do it makes her a giant! In fact the title of her mix tape is the "Sleeping Giant" where she goes in on the "Otis" track. Jha Jha and her alter ego Gee Tee gives you just a taste of what to expect in 2012.

GT: Can you tell the world who Jha - Jha is? Jha-Jha: Jha jha is a Higher Power, a leader, an anti Robot, a CEO, video director, editor, writer, producer, artist/genius and businesswoman. I own 3 entertainment companies, Get It Girl Ent, IAM=Me Inc., and G'Squad Ent. And have written records for many artists in the industry. Aka Jha Jha is a Get It Girl :)

GT: Why do you think it is so much harder for a woman to make it in the rap industry? Jha Jha: Women have a bad rep, some of its true and some of its not, but when we get in we make more money then the dudes if the business is handled the right way.

GT: Did Gee Tee come alive after the Dipset split or was she always around? Jha Jha: Geetee had to come out to protect Jha Jha. When you fearing for your life and riding subways and put in harms way all the time, you can't wear 4-inch heels and have your hair flowing in the wind, you would be food. So I had to wear hoodies and Timbs to sort of disguise myself so people wouldn't notice me. I also had to survive I wasn’t going to sleep my way to the top so I had to find an alternate route, that's where GeeTee came in. I didn't feel like it would be fair to only tell one side of the story to please a certain audience I felt like I needed to tell the entire story so people can really get an understanding of where I've been and where I'm going I.e. Jha Jha and Geetee. It’s a story that I'm telling about my life. Jha Jha was always a superstar but life happened and I had to survive and didn't think it was fair to myself or the people who helped me come up to leave that part out. That's where GeeTee comes from.

GT: With the industry being so into image and believing that 'sex sales" stereotype, do you think Jha Jha is more so to satisfy that notion and Gee Tee is more so staying true to self?

Jha Jha: I'm mean I think both artist are sexy if your a straight man your probably going to like Jha Jha better then GeeTee but on the other hand women straight, bi or gay love GeeTee so I don't know, I do know that Jha Jha is the more pop type artist and GeeTee is more hood. So it’s all on how you pick your poison.

GT: Who inspires Jha Jha? Jha Jha: Queen Latifah, Oprah Winfry, P Diddy, Jay Z, Russell Simmons, Missy Elliot, Lauryn Hill, Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat, Obama and 50 cent.

GT: Who inspires Gee Tee? Jha Jha: That's a good question GeeTee came from the streets and real life experiences. GeeTee goes against the grain and doesn't care what anyone says or thinks she doesn't even know she's a girl, because she wasn’t treated like one. So I guess u can say life inspires GeeTee.

GT: You are going extra hard, do you feel like you are gaining ground as just "Jha- Jha" not "Jha Jha from Dipset"?

Jha Jha: I'm starting to get recognized as Jha Jha. I didn't have very much promo when I was affiliated with them.

GT: What can we be on the look out for from Jha Jha and Gee Tee? More Music More Videos More Drama and more Style

Jha Jha: What makes you different from other New York Female rappers? Well one thing is I'm not originally from NY, I'm from Miami but much love and respect to NY it showed me the hustle, splash and the game. I'm just different from everybody, has nothing to do with what state you’re from I Am Me :)

GT: Who would you compare your self to Lil Kim or Foxy? Jha Jha: Neither one of them, I'm a big fan of their music but I'm here to make my own legacy. I compare myself to me. I am influenced by Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliot, Da Brat, Queen Latifah, those are my idols

GT: Why is it easy for a female to be “black balled” versus a man? Jha Jha: I think its because they feel women are hard to work with. GT: Have you ever tried to go to Bad Boy Or Roc A Fella? Jha Jha: Well to my knowledge Puff ,P.Diddy was interested in working with me after “What U Been Drinking On “ was released but the opportunity got shut down by haters. I have never had the liberty to meet Jay Z yet.

GT: What is one thing you would change about the game? Jha Jha: The way the Labels and A&R’ s think. Labels have turned into research companies; they go by numbers not talent. I wish the A&R's could be more like the ones who discovered the Michael Jackson’s, Aretha Franklin’s, Queen Latifah’s, Biggie, Pac and so on. It’s not like that now the labels want u to make yourself pop and then give them a cut, lol ,smh.

GT: Where did the song Alien come from? Jha Jha: Me and MoonShyne the producer for Alien was sitting in the studio, he played a track and that's what I came up with. Alien is very important to me because it symbolizes who I am as an artist. I'm an endangered species of the music industry, they've never seen or dealt with an artist like me before and it scares them because people fear what they don't understand. I am not your stereotypical female artist, and the label execs don't know how to take that. They know I'm hot, just never had an artist of my magnitude before, so it scares them. But when it takes off everyone will want a piece, that's just how robots think I get it now.

GT: Would you get into acting, modeling or reality T.V? Jha Jha: Yes, I'm getting ready to start filming pilots for Jha Jha and GeeTee now. I love music but I have fallen in Love with film, the production and acting side of it.

GT: Have you grown lyrically since Dipset times? Jha Jha: I would like to think so, check out my mixtapes Sleeping Giant, and GeeTee's Swimming with the Sharks.

GT: What state do you feel hip-hop is in? Jha Jha: I feel like hip-hop is in a Robotic state, everyone is just following everyone else, there is no originality. Also its very repetitive, people talk about the same thing all of the time. No one pushes the envelope.

GT: Why do women continue to come out with camps of dudes and let them control the career moves versus handling business on their own?

Jha Jha: Its extremely hard for women to even get into the music industry, especially female rap artist, I commend those who made it to the top and those who are still grinding to get there. To the ladies, it may seem like the only way to get in and beat the odds because it is a male dominated industry and can be seen as the only option to get it. Plus there is a resume of camps who have been successful putting out women, record labels don't believe in you until someone else does, that's just how the game is #Robots are what I call them. As far as controlling business moves it could be a number of things, contractual, personal, or just loyalty, it all depends on the situation and the indivuals at play.

GT: Would you collab with Julez? Jha Jha: Yeah I would Juelz was always really nice to me, he was the first person to jump on one of my records when I first got there, and he let me use his studio to record, he didn't have any negative intentions toward my career, or me and he always kept it real, he didn't have anything to do with the issues between the others and myself. I think he's very talented and is going to blow through the roof when he gets his proper shine.

“ Reflection”

On the twenty-fifth day of November, in the year two thousand and eleven, did my brother and friend (Maurice Williams, also known as “Papa Jo”) give to me the task of answering a question that rest on the heart of many women. The question is,” Do men ever reflect back on the pain they may have caused someone?” In essence, do we reflect back on the pain we may have caused any woman, of any race, from any where in the world? My beloved sister’s, there is something you must first consider, and that is the reality that not all adult males are men. Some adult males are stuck in adolescence, caught in rapture of prenatal thinking, and incapable of being responsible or mature men. Therefore, when you meet us in this deformed condition you expect to be treated like a Goddess, and rightfully so, but how could I treat you like a woman when I have yet to reach manhood? All I know is disrespect, no remorse, childish games, lack of concern, selfish, and pre-mature ejaculated thought patterns that leave you feeling like nothing, instead of everything that you are in royalty. I have been in the mind set before, now as a man and I say emphatically as a man of God, it is impossible for a man not to reflect back on the pain he has caused God’s most treasured creation and that is you oh beautiful woman. I remember Jackie from the third grade I was overly aggressive with sexually, but I mesmerized her with my boyish charm. The numerous women who fought over my ego are exhausting. Time would fail me if I mentioned all the one nighties I kept as trophies from women I would seduce first mentally, and then gratify her body physically for hours. In addition, the pain I feel for all the women I put out on the highway in the middle of nowhere, simply because she had morals and principles that my poetic charm could not hypnotize. I was not a woman beater, however, the mental scars I caused are readily visible to this very day, that in which I wreaked upon her heart and soul. To every breathing woman do I seek to help heal with my creation of virtuous woman series, that which God has blesses me to empower women with to their greatest potential in Him. Knowing and understanding your worth oh beautiful woman, is power surpass by none. I have recently completed my latest book honoring, dedicated, and written solely for women all around the world. My personal goal, God willing, in my lifetime is to find every woman I know I caused pain, and if only to cook her breakfast. To let her

know that I get it now, I am awake and conscious of whom she is, and that nothing can compare to her in value. I truly get it, it has all become clear, you are a Goddess destined for greatness, and your worth is precious as the air that I breathe. Perfect you are on the scale of the food that nourishes my body, the water that quenches my thirst, and the sun that warms my brown skin. Without your hand in mines, I am likened to fresh air with no one to breathe it. I get it, your worth is now known to me, and I honor you above anything on this side of Heaven while giving Glory to God for opening my eyes. I just want to see you for the first time as a man and resurrected king. Allow me to introduce myself, I am King Yo’shiyah, the master builder, sculpture, crowned man of God, and protector of your self worth and esteem. Nice to finally see you oh beautiful woman as a man, and to meet your acquaintance. Heretofore, to all women I apologize for all past pain. FROM MY HEART TO YOURS! Maurice Williams/ King Yo’shiyah,

The Streets Are Talking About

Girlfriends Talk

Behind The Walls Relationships, Marriage and Children Relationships and Marriage are similar but are far from the same. Some people want to believe that only a signed piece of paper separates the two but that’s where you find out who the person is that you’re with and I don't mean sex. There are some things that can complicate a real relationship and one is SEX. A lot of people (mostly men) make that the reason for love. Their minds become clouded and they think there is nothing better, ("This is it"), ("it must be love "), WRONG! You also have some people ( mostly women) who think that because a person spends money on you or takes care of you that it must be love, " WRONG again! In fact when you put the two together you have destruction and in a lot of cases children get made and yes, that’s another major complication. We as people and I say people because there is no color barrier in this issue. We make no real effort to get to know each other before sex, before spending money and more importantly, before children. In reality the relationship which often turns into marriage is often doomed to fail if both parties don't know or attempt to know GOD. If you know God you would want to know the person you plan to spend your life with. If you hang your relationship on sex and not God you'll never know if you can deal with the good or bad habits of the other person. If you hang your relationship on money and not God, then how can you know that you can go through better or worse times People say vows when they get married but the vows are supposed to be unconditional. God didn't make man for woman and woman for man so they can separate for some crazy emotion that they are having. People are getting married cause they think it's the thing to do. It's time to take marriage serious, the children are watching. As for the children (child), when the bad times come they lose cause you don't even know how to settle things in a adult manner, so the child becomes a punching bag. We make everything seem to be about the child or children, when it’s really just your own emotions getting the best of you. This is a cycle that is over running our entire society. The simple thing of getting to know God so we can get to know our mate, so we can give our children better examples to see, can change the world. Although right now I am incarcerated, I am getting to know God and He is the best thing that has happened to me. I challenge you the reader to get to know God and lets change the world, our children need it. Read Ephesians 5:23-33, 6: 1-4

Melody Moments Mary J. BligeMy Life II: The Journey Continues, Act 1Geffen Records On the song "Midnight Drive" penned by Milwaukee native Rico Love, Mary J. Blige spits a verse under her hip-hop moniker, Brook Lynn. Other than that, and the so-so Chaka Khan redo "Ain't Nobody," Blige's new CD, "My Life II," doesn't have many missteps. Following in the footsteps of Blige's classic '90s album, "My Life," the Queen of HipHop Soul gets back to her winning formula of hip-hop-infused tracks, complete with features from rappers Nas, Busta Rhymes, Drake and Rick Ross, along with gutwrenching love diatribes. "My Life II" is decidedly more inspirational than some of Blige's previous work. Even "No Condition," a song in which Blige admits her inability to share love with her partner, is surprisingly upbeat. "Mr. Wrong" finds Blige confessing that "bad boys ain't no good, good boys ain't no fun," a realization that won't prevent her from falling for the wrong guy. Blige is unmatched when it comes to expressing the emotional depths of love, loathing and the plight of a woman's selfesteem and self-awareness when dealing with the ups and downs of relationships. The exquisite "Empty Prayers" and the soul-stirring "Need Someone" are proof

positive. - Geraud Blanks, Special to Journal Sentinel

Your Guide to Eating Out Right A woman sits at a restaurant studying the menu with furrowed brow. She has begun an exercise routine and knows that her frequent meals out could slow her weight loss results if she wasn't careful. When the waiter comes she is still deep in thought over what to order. "What can I get for you?” he asks with a smile. She looks up and frowns, no closer to arriving at a decision. On a whim she blurts out, "I'm trying to eat healthy but I have no idea what to order. What do you think I should eat?” The young waiter looks startled but quickly rattles off his idea of a healthy meal. "The eggplant and roasted pepper pasta is filled with vegetables. You could get that with a salad.” The woman smiles. Yes, vegetables do sound healthy. So she orders the veggie pasta with a side salad and a diet soda, then sits back to enjoy a few slices of bread. That's a true story. Not surprisingly the woman was unable to lose weight even though she was exercising regularly. It is said that 80% of your weight loss results are derived from diet, and the remaining 20% from exercise—so you can see how important it is for you to stick with a healthy eating plan. Use the following tips as your guide to eating out right: AppetizersAppetizers are a great way to start out a leisurely meal, but can also derail your good intentions with a quickness. Don't Order • Anything fried. Fried foods are a favorite, but will do damage that even the most intense workout won't undo. • Creamy dips. These are filled with fat and usually come with something fried to dip in it. • Bread. It comes smothered in cheese or seeped in butter, and even when it's plain it fills you up with more carbohydrates than your body needs. Do Order • Green salad. Ask for very light dressing and no croutons. • Antipasto. A plate of thinly sliced meats, olives and cheese will start you off with some protein. Lettuce wraps. These are delicious, protein-filled and low in carbs. BeveragesCalories in drinks are sneaky because they don't fill you up. This means that you end up taking in far more calories than you bargained for. Don't Order • Regular or diet soda. On one hand you're drinking corn syrup through a straw, on the other you're drinking chemicals that cause you to crave sweets. It's a no win situation. • Sweet cocktails. Many restaurants are advertizing sweet cocktails –resist the urge. Sugar plus alcohol equals loads of unneeded calories. • Sweetened tea. You may feel righteous for ordering iced tea, but if it's sweetened then you may as well be drinking fully loaded soda. Do Order • Water. Don't laugh! Water is the best beverage of all. • Unsweetened iced tea. Don't ruin it by adding that packet of sugar. Learn to enjoy the natural sweetness to the tea. • Red wine. Stick to one glass, and drink responsibly.
