LOOK INTO THE PROCESS
DESIGNING THE GUIDE BY GIRLS, FOR GIRLS This program guide was made a little differently than the ones before. We saw this as an opportunity to teach girls how to be G.I.R.L.s through design! Our two Girl Scout interns, Zora and Mimi, partnered with Spark Corps, a design consultancy, to create the program guide and learn about being G.I.R.L.s. They were go-getters by asking users for feedback, innovators by creating a style, risk-takers by learning new skills, and leaders by creating content and designs that are girl-centered.

I had a great experience at Spark Corps. We learned so many different things. One of my favorite things we learned was a brainstorming technique [mood boarding]. I like the technique because it reminded me of vision boards. I really liked interviewing the readers to get the feedback on the program guide. I also liked gathering stories

A Message from Our CEO The OUTDOOR JOURNEY is for Daisies through Ambassadors to have an opportunity to learn new outdoor skills and inspire an interest in environmental stewardship. (NEW) STEM JOURNEYS are for Daisies through Juniors and are all multi-level. These programs will help you think like a future STEM professional. Engineering | Think Like an Engineer: Learn how to think like a designer by participating in hands-on design challenges. Computer Science | Think Like a Programmer: Participate in interactive computational-thinking activities to learn how programmers solve problems. Outdoor STEM | Think Like a Citizen Scientist: Learn the scientific method by undertaking a citizen science project that involves making observations, collecting data, and working with scientists.
Welcome to another great Girl Scout year! When you’re a Girl Scout, you are a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader™) and we can’t wait for you to learn more about these traits that define girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. This is our Girl Scout DNA. Girl Scouts are enthusiastic, bold go-getters. From selling cookies, to earning the Gold Award, Girl Scouts set and achieve ambitious goals! They are creative, curious, and innovative. Girl Scouts program underwater robots and work to solve community problems. From mastering the high ropes course to learning how to canter on a horse for the first time, they are brave risktakers. And our Girl Scouts are groundbreakers, ambassadors, and leaders, in their schools, their homes, and their communities. This year’s program guide was a girl-led initiative. Girl Scouts designed this program guide with G.I.R.L.s in mind, and we hope you find programs and events that interest and challenge you. This year there are four new Journeys and five new badges being offered for STEM and outdoor, representing the largest investment in new Girl Scout programming in the last five years.
Five new BADGES categories are available that encourage girls to complete hands-on activities in STEM and outdoors. Engineering | Robotics: Design your own robots after learning how they’re built and programmed. Engineering | Mechanical Engineering: Complete hands-on engineering activities, such as building and testing roller coasters, race cars, and jumping robots. Girls’ Choice | Troop Camping: This year, girls from across the United States had the chance to vote for their favorite badge category and topic. And the winner is…Troop Camping! New Daisy Badges: Two new Daisy badges, Outdoor Art Maker and Good Neighbor, give Daisies a chance to get in on the creativity other Girl Scouts already enjoy and discover all about their school, Greater Atlanta, or even Georgia! We continue to invest in our programming to move at the speed of G.I.R.L.s. These new Journeys and badges are designed to help you unleash your inner G.I.R.L. and discover your unique talents. Use this program guide as your go-to resource for discovering Girl Scout events and activities in the Greater Atlanta area. As we continue to add new events, check Events.GirlScoutsATL.org often for the most up-to-date listings. Thank you for being a part of Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. I cannot wait to see what you do this year!

ADVENTURE AWAITS
CAMPING THREE AWESOME WAYS TO CAMP! SLEEPAWAY AND DAY CAMP Exploring nature provides challenges and enhances leadership skills. In girls, camping also inspires curiosity, discovery, and problem solving. Learning to sail, conquering a challenge course, and making a fire for s’mores all require courage and teamwork.
TROOP CAMPING Troop camping is a unique opportunity for girls to connect with each other while discovering and exploring the outdoors. Choose from setting up your own tents on our campsite, camping in a cabin, or staying in a platform tent.
“During a sleepaway camp at Camp CAMPOREES Camporees, also known as in-gatherings, are a community building opportunity for Girl Scout troops within a Service Unit to connect with each other while discovering the outdoors.
Misty Mountain, I went zip lining. I had never gone zip lining before, and I was super nervous. However, as soon as I jumped off the platform and started zooming through the air, it stopped being scary and [became] the best experience of my life. -Mimi M.

FOCUS ON THE
GOLD AWARD HOW TO START YOUR GOLD AWARD BY: LIME GREEN GIRAFFE SOCIAL MEDIA DIRECTOR, AVERY B. The Gold Award is the highest honor in the Girl Scouting world, the pinnacle of years of hard work, the greatest award for any girl. The Girl Scout Gold Award is recognized worldwide and is a source of great pride for all who earn it. The Girl Scout Gold Award is a special award and earning it requires completing seven steps in a process which can be quite overwhelming! Coming up with a project, contacting people, leading all of it, funding the project, filling out all the paperwork… it can be scary! Luckily, we’re here with some tips on how to get started earning your award.
1. Starting is the hardest part A piece of good news! Before you can start on your project, you are required to fill out paperwork to submit for approval. The paperwork isn’t just a few easy questions. Instead it’s designed so that when you are done filling it out, you will have your entire project planned. Once your paperwork is approved during your interview, the only thing you have to do is start your project. There really isn’t too much more planning to do, and you’re good to get started changing the world!
2. Brainstorm! It can be incredibly frustrating, banging your head against a table as you rack your brain for the perfect idea for your project. I can promise you that the perfect idea won’t just come to you. It can take time and lots of changed decisions before you settle on your project. The best thing to do is just brainstorm. Get your ideas on paper, and go from there. Gold Award Coach, Karen Jenkins, strongly encourages choosing to work with something you feel passionate about. “It will make all the difference in the world toward creating a successful project,” Jenkins said. Brainstorming issues you care about, activities you love to do, or even people you enjoy working with is a great starting point.
87
Gold Award recipients in 2017!
3. Start early An expert piece of advice from Gold Award Coach Mary Williams is to start your project early. A rule of thumb is to give yourself two summers to complete your award. One summer to complete the paperwork and planning, the school year to complete your project, and the next summer to fill out your final paperwork. Also, don’t wait until your senior year of high school to start. Final paperwork is due by September 30 if you want to be part of that year’s awesome Gold Award ceremony. If you wait too late, you also can’t put it on college applications or try to get scholarships. You will run into challenges, and if you give yourself some wiggle room, it will make it easier to be flexible and overcome them.
4. Don’t stress yourself out too much At the end of the day, your Girl Scout Gold Award will be a project you feel passionate and excited about, and you shouldn’t stress yourself out too much about any of it. There are people to help you every step of the way, and if you get stuck, they’ll help you to keep going. Don’t put yourself under too much pressure. You can do it!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR
OLDER GIRLS OLDER GIRL HIGHLIGHT BY: SAMANTHA Y., GOLD SCOUT AMBASSADOR AND GOLD AWARDEE Unlike most girls, my Girl Scout journey didn’t begin until my freshman year in high school. As a Girl Scout, not only did I learn from our motto of courage, confidence, and character; I also learned important life skills.
I had the opportunity to be a council delegate for my service unit for 4 years, and as a council delegate I represented the girls from my service unit while attending the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta Annual Meeting. At the meeting I was able to learn more about what goes into running the organization, such as the financial aspects of the organization.
As one of my take action projects for my journey, I started a Gamma Gamma Sigma chapter at my high school. Gamma Gamma Sigma is a club to introduce older girls to Girl Scouts and to encourage them to be active members within their community... One year we coordinated a Christmas party for the women and children at a homeless shelter named 7 Bridges. We collected toys for the kids, and Santa paid a visit. He gave every child a gift, and each woman received a beauty product.
Camp CEO is the most enriching camp I have had the pleasure of attending. It is an opportunity
mentor us and share some pearls of wisdom with us that they learned from their mentors and their experiences throughout life.
Lastly, this year I earned my Gold Award. The Gold Award was an enriching experience, and it is the accomplishment that I am most proud of. For my project, I worked with the Winn Dixie Hope Lodge to refurbish their Garden of Hope . The Winn Dixie Hope Lodge is a wonderful organization that houses cancer patients for free while they are in treatment. With any project that I do, I make sure that I am passionate about what I’m doing, so I decided to center my project around the topic of cancer because my grandmother passed away of cancer when I was 9 years old; I knew going into the project that I wanted to do something to honor her memory. I raised $5,000 to re-invent the 40 ft x 60 ft garden.
Girl Scouts has taught me many life lessons and I will be forever grateful for all of the opportunities that have come my way because of it. I hope that one day I will be able to give back to Girl Scouts as much as it gave to me throughout the past four years. While I start my adult journey, I will carry all of the lessons and skills I learned from Girl Scouts, and apply them to my college life at The University of Georgia.

EVENTS
HOW TO REGISTER EVENTS MANAGED BY GSGATL Online Registration Start at our home page www.GirlScoutsATL.org. Click the Events link. Select the Event list and search for specific events by title or with advanced search. You can also look at the Events Calendar to find events. The registration link is located in the event information once registration for that event is open.
TIPS Registration for each event is handled by either the Program Partner sponsoring that event OR by the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta staff (GirlScoutsATL / GSGATL). Look at the event details on the website to see more information on how to register. Program Partners will have their own registration link.
FAQs Who can attend? All girls must be registered Girl Scouts in order to attend an event (events advertised as family events are the exception).
If I cancel, can I get a refund? There is a 10% cancellation fee if you cancel two weeks or more in advance of the event date. A refund is not issued if you cancel less than 14 days from the event* If GSGATL cancels an activity or an event for any reason, a full refund (or event credit) is issued. Refunds are made as follows: • Requests must be made in writing prior to the registration deadline. • No refunds are issued for registrants who do not attend the program. • Girl and adult membership registration is non-refundable. *excluding Summer Resident and Day Camp
By Mail OR In Person Go to the Forms section of our website. Completely fill out an Event Registration form. Mail in the form with payment OR drop it off with the receptionist at our Mableton Volunteer Service Center.
Events sponsored by GSGATL partners have their own registration intsructions. Details included on their ads or on the event calendar online. Registration is not complete until payment is received. Payments can be made by American Express, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Check, Debit Card, or Unexpired Cookie Dough. Financial assistance is available for events facilitated by GSGATL. Up to 50% is available for girl fees. Online submission is available under the forms section at www.GirlScoutsATL.org.
Do adults have to attend as well? Adult volunteers are needed at some programs to maintain the appropriate girl/adult ratio. If space is limited, once the girl/adult ratio has been met, no additional adults will be accepted.
Do I need to pay for the event in advance? All program fees must be paid in full with the registration. Fees are deposited when the registration is processed. Some events may have on-site registration on a space-available basis, but many popular events do sell out!
What happens if the minimum number of registrants is not met? Programs are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will continue until the program has reached the maximum or until the end of the registration period. Programs may be cancelled if the minimum is not met.
