The year 2018 was full of new adventures for our Girl Scout Council. We continued to move at the speed of girls, ensuring that Girl Scouts remains relevant to the evolving needs of our girls, families and volunteers and that we continue to build the next generation of leaders that will make our Greater Atlanta community a great place to live and work.

Looking ahead, Girl Scouts is preparing girls for the careers that are fueling our region’s economy in the 21st Century. In 2018, Girl Scouts released 30 new science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) badges in cybersecurity, environmental advocacy, mechanical engineering, robotics, computer science, and space exploration. Girls got to try out many of these new badges at our soldout Girl Scout STEM camps this past summer and the verdict is clear: Girl Scouts can’t get enough when they learn how STEM can solve real world problems and make our world a better place!

Dear Girl Scout Supporter,

At Girl Scouts, girls learn to find their voice and advocate for themselves and others on issues that are important to them. In 2018, more than 12,000 girls were part of Girl Scouts’ efforts to rename a bridge in Savannah in honor of our founder, Juliette Gordon Low. Girls had the opportunity to meet with their legislators, take part in letter-writing campaigns and attend Girl Scout day at the Capitol to make their voices heard.

We are also proud of our sustained commitment to making the Girl Scout Leadership Experience available to every girl, regardless of financial need. This year, with generous support from The Coca Cola Company, we launched a new program called Camp Leadership for 30 high potential, underserved high school aged girls. Camp Leadership offered girls the opportunity to meet professional mentors who work in a variety of career fields, learn about the college application process, and explore money management topics like financial aid and budgeting. They also got to bond with their peers and get outside their comfort zone by ziplining, climbing the rock wall and getting out on the lake in our kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

None of this great work could happen without YOU – our supporters! This year, you allowed Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta to offer more than 36,000 girls a supportive, all girl environment that focuses on being girl-led, cooperative learning, and learning by doing. By earning badges, getting outdoors, exploring STEM and other programs and flexing their entrepreneurship muscle in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, our Girl Scouts are developing the combination of hard skills and soft skills that will make them inquisitive students, high performing employees and engaged members of our community. Thank you for continuing to invest in our girls! Yours in Girl Scouting,

CAMP Leadership Over Spring Break, Chinirah B. and 79 other underserved girls from Metro Atlanta gathered for “Camp Leadership”. This annual spring camp program, presented by The Coca-Cola Foundation, is a series of empowering activities designed to help girls from underserved communities grow strong, expand their opportunities, and begin to confidently shape their future. This partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation has allowed Chinirah to be able to take part in workshops like “Ace the Interview,” “What’s Your Spark?”, “Developing Your Dreams and Aspirations,” and “Confronting Colleges and Costs.” Through these workshops and coaching by successful Atlantaarea, female role models, Camp Leadership participants were able to envision their future and map out their path to success. “Camp Leadership is great program to learn about college, how to represent yourself, and real-world skills,” said Chinirah. “It’s also a great opportunity for you to step out of your comfort zone and learn things you never thought you needed to know, and even make some new friends along the way.” The Coca-Cola Foundation has supported Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta Camp Leadership since 2017. In addition to providing life-skill building activities, girls can take part in traditional Girl Scout camp fun like canoeing, rock climbing, swimming and making s’mores over a campfire. “Camp Leadership is a safe space to learn about finance, college tips and etiquette with people who actually care and are patient with you, and who want to help you succeed,” said Chinirah. “It is a really great experience that I hope all girls have the opportunity to continue to have.” Because of her hard work and determination during Camp Leadership, Chinirah was offered a role as a Junior Counselor for the summer at Camp Timber Ridge. She led girls in arts & crafts, canoeing and exploring the outdoors. Chinirah learned how to connect with girls from different backgrounds and the importance of being a role model. She also gained valuable work experience and leadership skills that will help her prepare for college and a career. Camp Leadership is one of the many programs offered by Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta.

Juliette Gordon Low Bridge

JGL STEM Camp

During the 2018 camp season, Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta offered girls the opportunity to attend an all-girl STEM day camp at Camp Timber Ridge in Mableton, GA. This exciting program enabled 1,360 girls in 4th-9th grade to ignite their curiosity and creativity as they explored the different fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). During Innovation Camp, girls were able to explore STEM through the eyes of an engineer with handson design challenges. They learned how to design lava lamps, what goes into building a boat that can float, and how to create a protective device for hypothetical space passenger “Sally Ride, the Egg!” Instructors from Georgia Tech also came to camp to teach girls about bridge and prothesis design. Girls who attended Coding Camp discovered what the STEM field entails through the eyes of a programmer with computational-thinking activities. Girls spent the week learning how to design apps, build robots and create light up cards and dancing ballerinas. During camp, girls were taught the vital importance of how trial and error is necessary to perfect the process of coding. A critical part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, STEM programs help girls become better problem solvers, critical thinkers and inspirational leaders. “STEM careers are among the fastest growing fields out there and the opportunities are vast for a girl,” says Dr. Natoshia Anderson, STEM Program Support Manager for Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. “Girls deserve the same opportunities as boys to pursue and excel in these careers. Our camps give girls the opportunity to start or continue the journey to STEM success.”

A moment for our Movement to be proud In October 2017, a historic effort to rename the bridge over the Savannah River after Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low began at the Girl Scout National Convention. Thousands of attendees signed a special bridge banner that called for the bridge to be renamed for Juliette Gordon Low — a woman who continues to have an extraordinary influence on the lives of millions of girls around the world. Girls, volunteers, and council staff spent more than six months working on this effort and gathered upwards of 12,000 petitions requesting that the Georgia General Assembly name the bridge in honor of Juliette. In February of 2018, more than 400 Girl Scouts of all ages from across Georgia descended upon the Georgia State Capitol to meet face-to-face with lawmakers and urge them to support the effort. State legislators from the Savannah area, introduced HR 1054 and SR 715 on the House and Senate floors— with Girl Scouts from Greater Atlanta standing beside them. In addition, Girl Scouts were so determined in their advocacy that on March 12, 2018, Girl Scouts 106th birthday, they sent a combined 45,000-plus messages to members of the Georgia General Assembly urging them to support the legislation. In response, a press conference was held with a bipartisan group of legislators who championed the bill, with the goal to convince more legislators to pass this bill. Unfortunately, after an arduous effort, the Georgia General Assembly did not pass legislation that would allow the bridge to be renamed. Although the efforts of the Girl Scouts were not successful, the incredible energy and perseverance behind this effort served as a testament to the power and potential of the Girl Scout Movement to make meaningful change in the world.

During a private dinner in September 2017, Chantal and Tommy Bagwell unveiled the 1912 Society to a special group of donors who have invested at least $5,000 in girl leadership annually. Through their leadership with this initiative, they helped raise nearly $500,000 from supporters who were willing to invest into the next generation of girl leaders. “I believe that all girls regardless of their background or access to opportunity, deserve to explore the outdoors and experience new things,” said Chantal Bagwell. “There’s no better place to have an adventure than with Girl Scouts.” The Bagwell family became involved with GSGATL during their daughters’ Remi and Kiersten’s troop years. As the proud parents of three Girl Scouts, the family’s passion for the outdoors and quality time together empowered their daughters and transformed their interest into completing their Silver Award project: to remodel a home that would be used for troop meetings, storing day camp equipment, and trainings. Today, this home is fondly known as the “Girl Scout Mansion” and continues to be used by troops for this purpose.
