Girl Scout Summer Camp. What. Girls. Want. It’s time for girls to run outdoors, build new skills and try new things. It’s time for Girl Scout summer camp! The arrival of the 2012 summer season ushers in abundant opportunities for girls of all ages. As Girl Scouting celebrates its 100th anniversary during The Year of the Girl, it’s the perfect time for today’s girls to create the memories that they will cherish forever. Summer camp offers girls a place where they can be themselves, meet new friends and overcome fears. Each day presents girls with a new chance to work as part of a team, gain independence, and advocate for themselves and others. Girl Scout camp provides a place where girls’ interests are nurtured, dreams are fulfilled and lifelong friendships begin. Every girl has a place at summer camp. Whether she is a first-timer, or an experienced camper, we have multiple age-appropriate programs that will pique her interests. Remember the first time you cooked over a fire, pitched a tent or made S’mores? Now it’s her turn! Please read through this guide thoroughly with your daughter, and together determine how her interests and our sessions can provide her with a rewarding and enrichingly active summer. Thank you for your continued support of summer camp. It is yet another opportunity to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place!

Plan for a Lifetime of Memories As you and your daughter plan her amazing summer camp experiences, use these questions to help determine which camp programs and locations may work best: 1. Has your daughter slept away from home without a parent? If not, she might prefer our day camps. 2. Are you ready to have limited communication with your daughter for the week? 3. Is your daughter ready to travel to camp without a family member? 4. What are your daughter’s interests? 5. Is your daughter ready to try something she hasn’t had an opportunity to try before?
For All Girls Everywhere
Use your answers to these questions to help you both select the program sessions that your daughter will always remember.
Imagine what an entire generation of girls will do, given the Gathering Places, Program Centers and Camps confidence, the skills, and the experience they need to lead. 9 Girl Scout Gathering Places 1.

General Information for Parents Please read carefully, some of our policies have changed. General Information Girl Scout summer camp is open to all girls entering 1st through 12th grade regardless of race, color, nationality or socioeconomic factors. Grades listed for each program refer to the grade the camper will be entering in the fall. Membership Girl Scout membership is required to participate. Non-members must add the $12 membership fee to the registration fee to cover membership through Sept. 30, 2012. Girl Scouts of the USA provides basic accident insurance coverage for all registered Girl Scouts as a supplement to the family’s existing insurance coverage. Friends/Buddies Girls attend camp individually, not as a troop. Girls may choose to attend with one friend/buddy. Every attempt is made to place them in the same unit but this cannot be guaranteed. Units are generally made up of girls who are in the same level of Girl Scouting, so friends who vary greatly in age are not likely to be placed together. Girls with Special Needs We are committed to accommodating girls with special needs. Our goal is to provide a positive camp experience for all girls. Parents/Guardians of girls with special needs should contact Peggy Brothers (pbrothers@girlscoutsgcnwi. org) about the needs of their daughter so the best placement can be made. Proper Behavior Required Camp life is an excellent opportunity for girls to live, work and play together. It is a community of many people, and we expect everyone to behave appropriately. The camp director and staff will do everything possible to help girls adjust to camp life. However, GSGCNWI reserves the right to send any girl home from camp who constantly misbehaves, who willfully disobeys camp rules, or whose behaviors towards others (campers or staff) is unacceptable. There is no refund in these cases.
Fees Fees are deposited when the registration is processed. Please do not postdate checks. There will be a $25 service charge for checks returned due to insufficient funds. Financial Assistance Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana is committed to ensuring that all girls have the opportunity to participate in Girl Scouts. Financial assistance is offered to help meet the needs of those members whose family would financially be unable to participate in approved Girl Scout activities. • • • • • •
A person must be a registered member to receive financial assistance. All Girl Scout funds must be used for the greatest good of the largest number of members. Funds are limited; aid is based on financial need. Financial assistance is determined on the basis of need, not merit. Financial assistance is not designed to underwrite event costs. All requests and allocations are confidential.
Eligible Expenses • Summer camp program fees Requirements for Requests • Applicant is a registered member Girl Scouts. • Applicant is unable to participate without financial assistance. • Applicant would benefit from the requested experience. • Funds will be used for the purposes requested. • Each camper may request financial assistance for one session of day camp or one session of resident camp.

Camp Staff and Leadership Members of our camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, fun-loving and caring individuals. They are selected based on their experience, ability to serve as role models and their genuine desire to work with children. Our staff is committed to creating a caring and supportive environment that respects each girl as an individual. Staff candidates are recruited from colleges and universities, local community agencies and referrals. At our day camps, volunteers and seasonal staff provide the leadership. Individuals must be at least 18 years old and complete a thorough application process which includes a background check. The health and safety of our campers is always the first priority of the staff. Staff training prior to camp includes supervising and caring for campers, activity programming, first aid and CPR, team building, and much more. Staff members who supervise high-adventure activities are required to have additional training and qualifications. Staff are all registered members of Girl Scouts. Positions available Each summer we seek highly motivated and talented people to join our staff. Those interested in a job at camp should visit our website, www.girlscoutsgcnwi. org, for more information.

Rachel Sehgal attended Camp Greene Wood as a child, completed Program Aide training and went on to work as a camp aide, core staff and site director at Von Oven. She has her MSED from Notre Dame and teaches high school math at Marist in Chicago. She continues to spend her summers at Greene Wood.
Resident Camp Overview for Parents Picture your daughter learning new skills, building her self-confidence, meeting new people, and making friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. All this can be hers at Girl Scout resident camp. Girl Scout camp is a safe place where all girls (even those who are not currently Girl Scouts) can experience the great outdoors. It is a place where a girl can hike a trail, stretch her limits, build her self-esteem or learn a new song. Girls never forget the first time they cook over a fire, discover a tree or paddle a canoe. Being part of a community and gaining independence are just two of the many benefits of summer camp.
We Love to Celebrate! Girls celebrating a five or 10-year resident camp milestone will be recognized during the closing ceremony of their session. Join us as we celebrate these young women who have contributed to our camp communities over the years. We count only years at Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana and legacy council resident camps.
Meals are well-balanced, nutritious and served family– or buffet-style in the dining hall. Girls will also have the opportunity to plan and cook some of their meals with their unit. Contact camper@girlscoutsgcnwi.org with any dietary restrictions or allergies at least one month before camp.
Camp is a place where a girl will play games… feel good about herself… write a letter… live without TV’s and computers… discover her potential… and have the time of her life! The theme of the week covers a majority of the activities. Other activities include swimming, playing games, cookouts and crafts. Girl Scout resident camp programs are for all girls and are a terrific value. Her camp fee covers: • Lodging for seven days and six nights at camp; • A wide variety of camp programming, supervised by our trained staff; • Staffing that includes camp counselors, a health supervisor, waterfront staff, program staff, and our camp director; • Meals prepared by our food service staff, featuring fresh fruits and vegetables; accommodations can be made for girls with special diets, with advance notice! You Asked and We Made Changes! Half-week programs are now available for all ages, even Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors! These programs are scheduled during the first week of the resident camp season to allow girls the chance to try camp and attend again later in the summer. Additional shorter program sessions are available later in the summer at select sites, for Brownies and Juniors.
Camp Living While on site, campers and staff live in groups called units. Sleeping accommodations vary by camp and by unit, and may be a platform tent, yurt (a tent with a dome) or an open-air cabin we call a tabin. Girls sleep in groups of four to eight campers and staff sleeps in a separate, but nearby tent or tabin, within the unit.
Health and Safety Information Each camp has established emergency procedures in consultation with local law enforcement and emergency services. As part of camper orientation on the first day of camp, campers learn about these procedures and have drills that are used during the camp session for practice.
Spread the Word About How Much You Love Girl Scout Camp! Do you love Girl Scout Resident Camp? Tell your friends, and your camper will receive a special patch! Girls who have attended resident camp for at least one year, and recruit two friends who sign up and attend resident camp, will be recognized at the closing ceremony of their session. Friends do not need to attend camp together and do not need to be in the same grade level. Friends who are recruited must be girls that have not attended Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana resident camps previously. Girls must recruit two new campers to receive the patch.
Another change you asked for – programs that are one week or longer in length will now dismiss on Saturday mornings to allow us to have a wonderful closing campfire, allow you to complete the workday, and help everyone avoid Friday afternoon rush hour, especially if you need to cross the city to reach camp! On Saturday, we’ll have a continental breakfast and conclude with our closing ceremony. You’re welcome to join us.
Our camps all follow standards set forth by Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Camp Association. Our Girl Scout camps offering summer camp programming are licensed by the state, and uphold state and federal codes for health, safety, site food service, management, human resources, program design, and activities. Prior to attending camp, campers must turn in a completed health history form that includes a physical examination. • This physical examination by a physician must be completed within 24 months of attending camp. • The form will be included in the camp information packet. This packet will be accessible via a link on your payment receipt, if you register online, otherwise it will be mailed to you. • The completed and signed health examination must be returned by May 1, 2012. Upon arrival at camp, all girls will receive a health screening by trained staff. Health screening includes having her temperature taken, feet checked, scalp checked for lice and an overall scan for apparent illness or injury.
7
If head lice are found, your camper will not be allowed to stay at camp. You may treat your
camper and all of her belongings and return to camp to be re-checked. Our camps have a “no nit” policy. This is for the health and safety of all campers and staff. Campers with lice will not be admitted to camp until treated and there is no sign of nits.
•
During camp, you will be contacted if the health supervisor determines that your camper requires health care services outside of what is available at camp .
Camper Information Packet Once you have registered, you will receive a receipt via e-mail if you registered online. That receipt will have a link to the camper information packet. Please read through the list of documents and print and complete any that apply to your camper. This packet also includes an equipment list.
2012 Session Dates NEW! One week or longer resident camp programs will conclude on SATURDAY mornings beginning summer 2012. Our closing ceremony, where we celebrate the girls of the week and put the flag up for one last time, will continue on Saturday mornings. Please join us!

Girls, what does a perfect summer look like to you? If you said swimming, spending time with new friends, having the chance to experience things you just can’t do at home and being outdoors, then resident camp is the place for you! Choose from three camps. Stay close to home or head out and experience a new camp. Our camps are set up for you to attend on your own or choose to head to camp with one friend.
Half-week Options
You asked for shorter options for all grade levels and we’ve got them! Mini-camp sessions at Camp Butternut Springs are offered the first week of the season, June 24 – 26, as well as June 27 – 29. See page 6 for more details. At Camp Juniper Knoll (JK) and Camp Pokanoka (PKA), check out: Brownie Sampler (JK page 12 and PKA page 16) Junior Sampler (JK page 13 and PKA page 17) Cadette Sampler (JK page 14 and PKA page 18) Chill Out! for Seniors and Ambassadors (JK page 15 and PKA page 19)

You sign up for camp, share living space with girls your age, and once you get there, you’re in charge of deciding what you want to do! See page 10 to learn about the options. At Camp Juniper Knoll and Camp Pokanoka, there are also longer options for Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. Program listings that are for shorter or longer than a week will indicate the program length next to the name of the program. Check them out! Campers who attend camp for sessions that are longer than one week will stay for the weekend. Campers will not have the ability to do laundry while at camp; please pack accordingly.

Day Camp
Our day camp teen mentoring program is a multi-year leadership development program. program aides begin by learning to work with Daisy and Brownie units and culminate their experience by learning about the administrative roles that help make the camp run smoothly. Program Aides develop their leadership skills – teaching songs and games or camp skills; they also help younger girls plan and carry out activities. If you have leadership experience at other camps, you are welcome at our camps as program aides. Please contact TJ Latto (tlatto@girlscoutsgcnwi.org) for more information about entering our program aide program. NEW! Program aide at day camp training and service hours for all grades will be offered at Friendship Center in Country Club Hills, IL. Our program aide program happens in four stages. During each stage you move along in your work with younger girls in the day camp setting and address the specific programming considerations of each different age group. 1. 2.
The prerequisite to all Day Camp program aide experiences is Program Aide Basic Training. This may be accomplished during the school year (visit register.girlscoutsgcnwi.org and search for Girl Awards and Training). Program Aide Training at day camp is the second stage. This training is one week long and happens before any service hours are completed. After completing this training, spend two summers doing service hours; the first summer may be the same summer the training is completed. Program content covers camping skills, outdoor cooking, teaching techniques, and working in partnership with adult leaders. Successful completion requires daily attendance and an overnight on the Wednesday during training week.

Day Camp Overview for Parents Where will her adventure take her?
Your daughter is about to embark on a journey that is filled with excitement as she participates in a Girl Scout Leadership Experience through day camp. Girls will have the opportunity, through Girl Scout summer day camp, to experience fun-filled activities from our journey and badge books. Journeys are the “core” of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience where girls Discover, Connect and Take Action. Each journey is tied to some of Girl Scouting’s 15 national outcomes for girls. Our summer camp programs have three primary goals: 1. To help girls seek challenges in the world. 2. To help girls learn to promote cooperation and team-building. 3. To encourage girls to advocate for themselves and others, locally and globally. There are three journey themes that have age-appropriate activities to help girls meet these goals: It’s Your World – Change It! • Engages girls in thinking processes related to identifying and researching issues they care about. Engages girls in developing community • networks and creating and implementing plans of action. It’s Your Planet – Love It! At each grade level, girls will learn • about environmental issues such as clean water and air, noise pollution, global warming, soil contamination and agricultural processes. It’s Your Story – Tell It! Uses a storytelling theme in a fun and • grade level appropriate way for girls to better understand themselves and their potential. Girls will build a strong sense of self. • Girl Scout day camp programs are the best value in the area. Each camp fee covers: • Five days of programming that will keep her busy, challenged and meeting new friends. Staffing by a comprehensive camp staff • that includes a health supervisor, program staff and camp counselors. Food for her group’s cook out. • • Transportation to camp via chartered bus or train (Camp Greene Wood has train options available).

The camper day at Friendship Center runs from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Campers bring a sack lunch to camp. Transportation is not available to Friendship Center. Open house: Sunday, May 20, 1-4 p.m. Walking tours will be available and are held rain or shine.
Camp Greene Wood
This camp has 136 wooded acres, and is located in Woodridge, IL. There are hiking trails, cabins, fields for games, an archery range and platform tents. Day camp programs at Camp Greene Wood allow girls to explore the outdoors and develop skills in a safe and fun environment. A wide variety of programs provide opportunities for girls to choose activities best suited for their age and interests. Campers going into grade 4 and up may choose to participate in an overnight experience on Thursday. Meals during the overnight are provided. The camper day at Greene Wood is from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Campers bring a sack lunch to camp, except when there is a cookout. Open house: Sunday, May 6, 1-4 p.m. Walking tours will be available and are held rain or shine.

28
There is something new going on each week at Camp Palos! Weeks have themes and campers are invited to participate in one week or all of them. The program at Camp Palos includes lots of opportunities to build outdoor skills, explore the camp, and make new friends. Girl planning ensures that no two weeks are exactly the same. Campers going into grade 4 and up may choose to participate in an overnight experience on Thursday. Meals during the overnight are provided. The camper day at Palos is from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Campers bring a sack lunch to camp, except when there is a cookout. Open house: Sunday, May 20, 1-4 p.m. Walking tours will be available and are held rain or shine. Von Oven Scout Reservation is a property used by Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Von Oven is about ten acres of wooded land near Naperville Central High School where younger campers can learn about the outdoors. There is a small cabin that can be used in inclement weather. Our program at Von Oven Scout Reservation gives our youngest campers an opportunity to experience day camp for a shorter day. Activities similar to what are found at Greene Wood and Palos are featured, while being scaled just right for Daisies and younger Brownies. The program at Von Oven is a half day, from 9 a.m. until 12:30; a snack is provided. Transportation is not available to Von Oven. Open house: Sunday, May 6, 1-4 p.m. Walking tours will be available and are held rain or shine.

Once you have registered, you will receive a receipt via e-mail. You will receive a second confirmation via e-mail approximately two weeks prior to the beginning of camp. This confirmation will contain the camper’s unit assignment, specific transportation schedule, and other pertinent information.
Health and Safety
A Health history is required for each girl attending day camp. A girl’s registration will not be considered complete until her health history is submitted. Any medications to be taken while at • camp must be accompanied by an Authorization to Medicate Form. This will be sent via e-mail in the confirmation you will receive two weeks before camp. List any severe allergies or other impor• tant health information. The health supervisor will contact parents of campers with serious or life-threatening allergies to complete an Allergy Action Plan. Each program site has a health super• visor who will contact parents about health concerns as needed. Parents of girls with specific needs • should contact TJ Latto (tlatto@ girlscoutsgcnwi.org) to discuss those needs. • Day camp is held rain or shine. Buildings or shelters are available in the event of severe weather. All safety procedures are reviewed with • campers on the first day of camp.

Average unit size is based on the program level. At least two adults supervise each unit’s program. Girls are involved with the planning of the unit’s programming; therefore, program content varies from unit to unit and week to week.
Day Camp Volunteers Needed
Volunteering at day camp is the perfect way to connect with nature and Girl Scouts! Our day camp programs rely on volunteers. Multiple opportunities exist, from being a bus rider, to working in a unit providing program with the counselors. Please contact TJ Latto (tlatto@girlscoutsgcnwi.org) to volunteer or to learn more. To volunteer at day camp: 1. Register for the site and week you want to volunteer. 2. Complete the Volunteer Application and Member Registration (available at any council Gathering Place). 3. Attend open house and complete the self-study materials that will be provided.
Transportation
Transportation to Camp Greene Wood in Woodridge and Camp Palos in Palos Park is by chartered bus and is included in the camper registration fee. Please see bus schedules on pages 38-39. Metra train routes are also offered several weeks to Camp Greene Wood. You may choose to drive your camper to camp, however there is no fee adjustment if you choose to drive. Day camp transportation routes begin around 7:45 a.m. and end around 4:30 p.m. See the Transportation Schedule on pages 37-38 for the locations available in your area. The transportation method (bus or car) must be designated at the time of registration. Your designation helps to project the number of buses needed, ridership and commuting times for each bus route. Every effort is made to keep commuting times to under an hour. In an effort to make transportation routes as efficient as possible for all campers, we will cancel a stop if there are not at least five riders at the stop by May 1. Last-minute changes to bus routes are difficult to accommodate. Two weeks before camp begins, a confirmation will be sent by e-mail. This confirmation will have specific bus schedule information and a transportation agreement; campers must bring the completed agreement to camp.
Bus and Train Stop Safety
Parents are responsible for campers before transportation arrives in the morning and immediately after the campers are dropped off in the afternoon. Please be on time to pick up your camper.
Metra Trains
Camp Greene Wood only. Campers board the westbound Metra (BNSF) train in the morning, arrive at the train station near camp and then ride the bus to camp. In the afternoon, campers ride the bus to the train station, board the eastbound Metra train and travel to their designated stop. Adult chaperones ride the train with the girls. The cost of the train ticket is included in the camper registration fee.
Leadership Programs and Opportunities for Service Hours
Day camp is a great place to develop leadership skills! Program aide opportunities exist at all council-staffed day camps. For more information, please see page 24.

Volunteer-led Day Camp Overview Volunteer-led day camps are communitybased endeavors undertaken by talented and enthusiastic volunteers who have organized a camping experience for Girl Scouts. Each day camp has a unique theme and specialized activities. Many volunteer-led day camps feature teen mentoring opportunities for older girls and an overnight for interested campers. These camps utilize a variety of sites for their programming, including state and county parks, forest preserves and Girl Scout camps. All volunteer-led day camps are supported by council staff to ensure they meet numerous standards regarding program, budgeting, risk management, and health and safety. Registration is handled by each day camp or you may register online. Volunteer-led day camps rely on adult volunteers to participate in all aspects of the camp program. Without you, these camps are unable to serve the girls in the community. Please contact the volunteer team leading the camp in your community about options and opportunities. Information about the specific volunteer-led day camps can be found on our website; follow the link for Summer Camp. Once your daughter is registered for a volunteer-led day camp, we are not able to provide a refund.

Girl Scout Juniors (in grades 4-5 next fall)
Juniors are ready for additional involvement in planning their day camp experience. In partnership with adult leaders, girls may choose crafts, songs, games, nature, hikes, outdoor science and an outdoor cooking adventure. The Junior program adds the opportunity to participate in an overnight, typically on Thursday night. Many girls are ready for this experience, while others may not be ready, or may choose not to participate. The Junior Potpourri program includes the overnight; the Junior Kaleidoscope program does not. We want each girl to have a positive overnight experience. Help us to provide that by choosing the best program for your daughter. When deciding between these two programs, please consider: • Has she been away from home without her parents? Did she do well with that experience? • Is she comfortable in the outdoors at night? • Is she able to take care of her own needs? (i.e. pack her overnight gear, etc) • Does she adapt to new situations well?

(in grades 2-3 next fall)
Girl Scout Juniors (in grades 4-5 next fall)
Juniors are ready for additional involvement in planning their day camp experience. In partnership with adult leaders, they choose crafts, songs, games, nature, hikes, outdoor science and an outdoor cooking adventure. When deciding between these two programs, please consider: • Has she been away from home, without her parents? Did she do well with that experience? • Is she comfortable in the outdoors at night? • Is she able to take care of her own needs? (i.e. pack her overnight gear, etc) Does she adapt to new situations well? • We also suggest that you talk with your daughter. She may be more ready than you may think. The overnight can be the very best part of camp for the girl who is ready. It can be overwhelming for a girl who is not.
