HALL OF FAME Hall of Fame inductees are adults who have been members for at least 25 years who have delivered service that far exceeds the expectations of the volunteer position. Their work has had a lasting impact on the Girl Scout organization and their community. A maximum of 10 people are inducted each year, and this honor may be awarded posthumously. CHRIS CARAGHER – HALL OF FAME Chris Caragher recalls a wonderful experience as a girl member. Since her dad had been very active with the Boy Scouts for her four brothers, her mom decided to be her Girl Scout leader. She led Chris’ troop from Brownies though Cadettes. Unfortunately, her mom became ill and could no longer continue as a volunteer, so Chris did not have the opportunity to be a Senior Girl Scout. However, because of her mom’s admirable example, Chris decided to be a volunteer when she became an adult. Chris has many fond memories of her troop, but she is especially proud of one unforgettable act of kindness. Troop 606 of Downers Grove North was attending a Cadette and Senior Jamboree held at Camp Greene Wood, and Chris was serving on the planning committee for the Jamboree. She decided that her troop would stay in a cabin ,making it a little easier for Chris to do her committee duties while also keeping an eye on her girls. As the Jamboree started, the rain began to pour. Chris and her troop were well prepared for the downpour and had adequate rain gear with them. Another troop, which was younger and relatively inexperienced as campers, was trying to pitch their tents. These girls were having difficulty getting the tents up, had not dressed for the weather, and were getting soaked. Without being asked, the girls in her troop went out in the rain, finished pitching the tents in a better area where the ground wasn’t soaked, and told the other troop to sleep in the cabin and they would take the tents. Chris was so pleased that her girls showed empathy for these younger girls and demonstrated the true meaning of being a sister to every Girl Scout. It’s no wonder that their troop cheer was “6–0–6, 6–0–6, we’re a bunch of groovy chicks!” Another great experience for Chris and her troop was a trip they took to Savannah by car. They spent 11 days sightseeing during their journey, spending some nights in their tents since they didn’t have enough money to stay in hotels every night. Horseback riding in the Smokey Mountains was one of the most impressive segments of the trip. Chris feels that they all became so much closer to one another during their adventure. It’s evident that Chris has been a volunteer who has given so much, but she would be the first to tell you that she has received immense fulfillment from her involvement with Girl Scouts. SANDY CERVENKA – HALL OF FAME Ever since Sandy was a Brownie Girl Scout, she wanted to be a leader. She got her first opportunity as a Senior in High School when she was called on to take over leadership of a troop whose leader had to give up the troop, and she’s been a Girl Scout Leader ever since. Her favorite experience in Girl Scouts was when she was a Camp Counselor. Sandy and three other Counselors were assigned to Tall Oaks unit at Camp Wild Rose. This was before Sugarbush was built, so the unit house and 7

storm shelter nearest to Tall Oaks was a bit more of a hike than it was later. Two of the Counselors wore hearing aids and two wore glasses, and they made for an interesting and exciting leadership experience with the unit of girls they were assigned. The four counselors shared a platform tent in the unit and slept on the floor (but that’s a story for another day). One night a huge storm was rolling in, and Sandy and the other counselors didn’t hear or see it coming. They were asleep and hadn’t gathered up the girls to take them to the unit house which served as the storm shelter for Tall Oaks. When the storm hit and the Camp Director realized the unit was missing, she drove down to the unit and had to wake her counselors up so they could get the rest of the unit up, gather their gear and hike to safety at the unit house. No one was harmed other than getting rained on, and they can laugh about it now– assigning the counselors with hearing or vision issues all to the same unit created the “perfect storm” for when the storms rolled in. Sandy currently works with girls and adults in the Little Village neighborhood in Chicago, where she grew up and returned to teach. MARTY DEVEREUX–POCH — HALL OF FAME Marty Devereaux–Poch is about as green as one can be. She was a Girl Scout herself as a girl, had been an adult volunteer while she was in college, and became a leader when her sister was not going to continue with the girls when they were Juniors. Marty stepped in and led the girls through graduation. One of the times her girls “Stood for More,” was when her girls helped with the Relay for Life. When their cookie mom passed away, the girls decided to help. They became hostesses, bussed tables, helped at the event, ran kids’ games, and hosted fun laps. She was immensely proud of them and the effort they made in memory or their Girl Scout sister’s mom. One of Marty’s best memories, and something she is extremely proud of, is when girls from her troop earned their Gold Award. Marty herself received the First–Class Award. She was proud of how hard they worked, especially considering that during the time they were working towards it, the program was being revamped. Marty loves to share her vast knowledge and experience with other adult volunteers and girls, and is involved in Girl Scouts is many different aspects. She is currently or has been on many committees across the various councils she has been involved in. If you have a chance to talk to Marty, ask her about how many councils she has been a part of; it is an interesting bit of history! JANICE GEROVAC – HALL OF FAME Jan’s favorite Girl Scout memories as a girl all revolve around camp. As a Brownie for two years, she loved day camp, and when she became eligible for overnight camp during her two years as a Junior Girl Scout, she loved every minute at Camp Potawatomi. When she moved and Girl Scouts wasn’t available, Campfire Girls became her camping home. Years later, with children of her own, Jan wanted her own daughter to have the same opportunities she had as a girl. Feeling not–quite–ready to jump in as a “full leader”, Jan volunteered to be an assistant leader for her daughter’s troop. In the meantime, as sometimes happens, the person who originally planned to lead the troop backed out, and Jan stepped up to be first a Brownie leader, and then a Cadette leader for about 7 years. Most of her favorite memories as an adult Girl Scout were, again, camping related, from the big changes her girls underwent, to handling Brownies who couldn’t roll their own sleeping bags to seeing them become true camping enthusiasts, to working council summer camps and events like Junior Arts and Badge Festival. 8

CAROL MACOLA – HALL OF FAME After all these many years of being a girl member and then an adult volunteer, Carol Macola still remembers the day of her Brownie investiture in vivid detail. For this Brownie troop, it was a tradition for one of the girls to wear a handmade costume of the Wise Old Owl with a head fashioned out of a lamp shade. Her mother was the leader, so she was able to make it a very “special” day for Carol– the “honor” of being the owl, costume and all. Carol remained a Girl Scout all through high school. She then completed college, her master’s degree, and spent two years in the Army. She came back to Girl Scouts as a volunteer because she missed what she loved so much: the camping and the fun. She wanted to share that love with the next generation of girls, so it only made sense to her to become a volunteer. Having a troop that included girls from grades 3 to 8 wasn’t always easy, but Carol had a few tricks up her sleeve. Somehow, the rumor got around that she was a terrible cook. With that in mind, the girls decided that they needed to do all the planning for a camping trip during winter break. As Carol recalls, her troop planned absolutely everything for the trip – the meals and the activities. When they got to camp, all she had to do was stand in the kitchen and let the girls do what they had planned. Is it any wonder that Carol never did dispel that rumor? For all the girls Carol mentored and helped to grow into competent young women, she truly deserves the honor of being inducted into the Hall of Fame. ROBIN MOSS – HALL OF FAME When looking back on her years as a Girl Scout, Robin Moss feels that being a member made all the difference in the world to her. As a child, her family moved often, and Girl Scouts became a place she could thrive and gain confidence. In 1981, Robin applied and was then chosen to be a girl delegate from the Green Hills Council of Illinois for the Houston National Convention. Robin can still remember how influential she felt voting on an updated version of the Promise and Law. At that moment, she KNEW that she wanted to be involved in Girl Scouts for the rest of her life. And here she is today, the Chair of District 5, still actively working with issues pertaining to the democratic process. After her wonderful experience as a girl member, Robin wanted to give back. As a college student, she started to volunteer, and even provided her neighborhood with a scholarship for a Lifetime Membership. She has tried to be as generous as she can to the organization that has meant so much to her. When looking back at the impact that Robin has had on girls, she remembers one of her troop members who seemed to have really benefitted from her guidance. Michelle joined the troop in junior high, and had severe Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder (OCD), along with being very shy and introverted. Robin helped Michelle to overcome her insecurities, and in high school Michelle volunteered to participate in the Girls’ World Forum in 2012. Michelle went on to graduate from ITT and will soon be married– Robin was thrilled to receive an invitation to the wedding. Michelle’s success story reflects just one instance of the influence Robin has had in the lives of Girl Scouts. There were numerous times when Robin’s girls made a difference and decided to “Stand for More.” However, a certain Take Action project that her daughter and another troop member accomplished really demonstrates their proactive leadership in the community. The girls were completing their Justice Journey and identified a need to have recycling containers in the village parks. They wrote a proposal to the village council and presented it in person. The Oak Lawn village council accepted the proposal, and now there are recycling containers in all the town’s parks. Robin is a powerhouse of energy and commitment. It is with great pleasure that we welcome her into the GCNWI Hall of Fame.

JEAN PAGOREK – HALL OF FAME According to Jean Pagorek, Girl Scouting has offered her numerous opportunities for personal growth and leadership. Her senior advisor, Helen Krause, inspired Jean to become active beyond the troop level, so she became part of the Citywide Senior Planning Board in Chicago. She made some lifelong friends from that experience and directed a neighborhood day camp. That camp led to her being a Senior Scout camp director for a special session at Camp Woody Acres in Bartlett in 1968. She was encouraged to apply for a Reader’s Digest Grant to fund a Senior operated street program. The grant came through and “Come Join Us” operated in three diverse neighborhoods in Chicago for two weeks each in 1969. Other Girl Scout experiences, such as being a girl member on the Chicago Board of Directors, participating in several Wider Opportunities, being on the staff for Panorama City, and co–chairing a regional opportunity called “Connections,” came to Jean. Although not selected to attend a World Center as a girl, Jeanne did have the good fortune to receive support through the World Friendship Fund at GSUSA to chaperone a patrol to Our Cabana in 1983. Jean started her volunteer commitment as a co–leader for a Cadette troop in Chicago, and after a move to DuPage County, she became a co–advisor for Ship #167, a Mariner troop in Downers Grove. For more than 25 years, her Mariner troop met every week throughout the year, only taking a break during final exam week. They participated in a variety of co–ed weekend activities with Explorer Scouts, and of course, they sold cookies and calendars and fall products to raise funds for their trips. Before curbside recycling was instituted, the troop spent many Saturdays volunteering at a local recycling center. Jean takes pride in how active they were and how the girls earned the money to fund their own activities. Wanting to improve her Girl Scout knowledge, Jean went to Macy for training on home hospitality standards, since she served as the coordinator of these standards for DuPage. She also volunteered for the Adult Recognitions Committee, even chairing the committee at one point. Jean continues to serve on Adult Recognitions, but now for GCNWI. She has enjoyed meeting other Girl Scout volunteers from all parts of the Council’s jurisdiction. Girl Scouting has always been an important part of Jean’s life, and she’s had some great adventures with the “sisters” she has met. VERONICA PRADELSKI – HALL OF FAME Most with camping memories probably remember being outdoors and relishing the fun of exploring nature with our sister Girl Scouts. For Veronica Pradelski, she recalls a cut finger. As a Brownie, she thoroughly enjoyed cooking and preparing food outdoors, but had been instructed by her mother to not use knives. When Veronica was asked to use a knife during meal preparation at camp, she refused tell her leader, and ended up cutting her finger. With practice and additional Girl Scout camping experiences, Veronica did eventually improve her knife skills. Veronica continued as a Girl Scout through Cadettes, with camping as a focal point for her. One weekend at Butternut Springs was truly memorable because Cadette troops from across the southeast side of Chicago came together at camp. Sadly, this was her last trip to camp since her father passed away, and she was unable to move up to Senior Girl Scouts. Veronica was able to pass on her love of Girl Scouts to her daughters. When it came time for Veronica’s older daughter, Beth, to become a Daisy, there weren’t enough leaders. To that end, Veronica decided that she needed to become a volunteer, and she has stayed with the organization as a volunteer ever since. Veronica received a scholarship from the Girl Scouts of Cook County to attend a workshop for history preservation at the Macy Center. This opportunity opened the door to becoming a tireless advocate for the historical preservation of the Girl Scout movement, both nationally and locally. Her involvement with the Council historians has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her volunteer work for Girl Scouts.

10

Girl Scouting has been and will always be an integral part of Veronica’s life, and she has definitely given back to the organization. MARGARET (PEGGY) ROGERS – HALL OF FAME Although Peggy Rogers was a girl member for only two years, she has one special Girl Scout memory that will always stay with her. At the age of twelve, she went to Camp Juniper Knoll and was mesmerized by the experience. She recalls looking out at the lake and singing “Land of the Silver Birch.” The lyrics stick with her to this day: “Close to the water’s edge. Silent and still. Blue lake and rocky shore. I will return once more.” Unfortunately, Peggy’s days as a girl member ended shortly after that, but she always knew that she would one day return to Girl Scouting and to Camp Juniper Knoll. Peggy got her chance to return to Girl Scouts in 1965. There was a Cadette troop that met at her church looking for a leader, so Peggy offered to do it. Now she was hooked! During her tenure as a Cadette leader, she was particularly proud of her girls who took part in a swim program intended for individuals with physical disabilities. Her girls were excellent partners and really had an impact on the lives of those enrolled in the program. Peggy lauds the girls in her troop who took on this challenge as being the epitome of Girl Scouts. Soon Peggy started to seize opportunities for additional roles. Peggy was a member of the Juliette Low Committee, which had the purpose of fostering interest in Juliette Low. Peggy started the “Daisy Chain”, a newsletter which she sends out twice a year and has been going strong for over 42 years, with its 85th issue recently published. Volunteers from across the country send stories to her to be included in the newsletter. At its peak, there were over 500 subscribers. That number has dwindled in recent years to around 250, but Peggy insists she will continue to send out the “Daisy Chain” for as long as there are volunteers interested in receiving it. Being involved with the Juliette Low Committee, Peggy found other ways to share her admiration for our founder and for Girl Scout history. She created a Girl Scout museum in her home for girls to visit, and even had a replica of Juliette’s uniform to wear when the girls visited todo a presentation in the persona of Juliette. Often the girls would think that she WAS Juliette. Peggy vividly recalls the time when a Brownie hugged her around her legs and exclaimed, “Thank you for starting scouting!” What a priceless memory! Like Juliette’s pearls, Peggy Rogers is an irreplaceable asset to Girl Scouts and merits being a member of the GCNWI Hall of Fame.

THANKS II BADGE The Thanks II Badge honors volunteers who have already received the Thanks Badge and who have continued providing exceptional, outstanding services that benefits the total council or entire movement. The service is so significantly above and beyond the call of duty that no other award would be appropriate.v Levita Anderson, Chicago, IL Karen Layng, Riverside, IL Tresa Rademacher, Munster, IN LEVITA ANDERSON - THANKS II BADGE Levita Anderson will never forget how she ended up as a Girl Scout leader. She was so happy when her daughter, Tamara, finally got into a Brownie troop. At the end of the year, the girls were ready to bridge to Juniors. However, their Brownie troop leaderexplained to the girls that the current leader was stepping down, and they might not have a troop the next year. Without her knowledge, Tamara announced that her mother would lead the troop. When Mrs. Brown saw Levita, she said, “Thank you for volunteering.” Levita responded, “What did I volunteer for?” And that’s how Levita got started on her Girl Scout journey. Since that beginning of her Girl Scout career, Levita has had numerous times to be proud of her girls, but she takes special pride in her daughter. When Tamara was a college student at the University of Illinois, she was approached by a volunteer who needed a leader for a troop. Tamara was unsure if she should agree to take on a troop, but Levita had no such reservations. She told Tamara that she had been trained and was registered, so “It’s called payback!” Tamara accepted Levita’s reasoning and took the troop. One has to wonder if the “payback” was for the time Tamara offered her mother to be a leader without consulting with her first! Whenever Levita runs into the former girls from her troop, they thank her for helping them to be organized and self-reliant. Having a girl-led troop was very important to Levita. She remembers a time her troop was going on a trip to Juniper Knoll for Pow-Wow. One girl was late, and she was going to miss the bus. Levita sent her girls ahead on the bus with all of their gear and told them to get everything set-up when they got to camp. When the late girl finally arrived, Levita drove her to JK. Unsure of what she would find once she got there, Levita was very pleasantly surprised. Another adult who was staying with her troop remarked that Levita’s girls had set-up everything on their own and that she had never seen a group of girls so well organized. As a Girl Scout volunteer, Levita Anderson has been a mentor to many girls and sister volunteers. She truly deserves to be recognized with the Thanks II Badge. KAREN LAYNG – THANKS II BADGE When you talk with Karen Layng, she immediately expresses how empowered she became as a girl member and that being a Girl Scout made all the difference in her life. Karen’s hopes to pass along her love for the Girl Scout movement to a new generation (and her own daughter) came true when she and a long–time friend started a Daisy troop, beginning her journey as a Girl Scout volunteer. The troop stayed together for 13 years, and both their daughters and other members of the troop received their Gold Award, a highlight of the Girl Scout experience for both leaders. When Karen thinks back on the accomplishments accrued by her daughter Shannon, the most meaningful memory is what Shannon did to earn her Gold Award: raising over $44,000 for the “Century of Green for Riverside” project to plant trees in her community, which are now affectionately named “Shannon” trees.

12

Throughout her years as a leader, Karen encouraged the girls in her troop to be independent and speak for themselves. After noticing many girls become introverted in classroom settings. Karen created a meeting rule requiring girls to stand when they spoke and felt the change instantly: the girls felt more confident and compelled in what they were saying and took this ability to other situations. Karen insists the change had nothing to do with the rule, but that the Girl Scout experience gave the girls the wherewithal to speak with conviction. Karen knows that girls come to Girl Scouts to find opportunity. As sophomores, her troop was able to raise enough money to travel to Pax Lodge in London and Paris, a life–changing experience for many of the girls who never had the chance to travel abroad before. Their eyes were opened to the world, and many of Karen’s girls went on to do other overseas travel, one girl even joining the Peace Corps. Karen has gone on to hold numerous governance positions in Girl Scouts, including serving as a National Board Member and running to be President of the GSUSA National Board of Directors, but she will be the first to tell you that being a troop leader was the most rewarding experience. TRESA RACHEMACHER – THANKS II BADGE This nomination of Tresa Rademacher for the Thanks II badge is long overdue. Tresa Rademacher is all about the girls—and her contributions to Girl Scouting have influenced literally thousands of girls in our area. As a first aid/ CPR trainer and staff member, her focus was always on enabling adults to provide the very best girl experience possible, bringing forward new resources and partnerships at the service unit and council level. She continues to offer classes set up by individual Service Units in their own local areas. It is as a Service Unit Manager that Tresa is best known. Under her direction, her Munster Mints day camp, which expanded over the years, has become a well-oiled machine and very popular council-wide day camp! Tresa has successfully nominated dozens of Munster Mints volunteers for national awards, which tells us that the leaders of her Service Unit see and feel her success too. This has resulted in great leader retention, and the seamlessness of their leader succession has resulted in a large number of Girl Scout Gold Awards in the Munster community! Tresa has helped young girls develop positive thinking and character building, serving as a role model for Girl Scouts in her community and elsewhere. She understands how to guide them in learning life’s lessons, and strongly promotes community service and philanthropy. Her commitment to the organization leaves everyone in complete admiration for the work she does. She continues to build go-getting, innovative, risk-taking girls to lead the next generation.

THANKS BADGE The Thanks Badge recognizes adult members whose performance is truly outstanding and benefits the entire council or the global Girl Scout Movement. Ann McAloon, Chicago, IL Narda Seaberry, Calumet Park, IL ANN MCALOON – THANKS BADGE Ann is appreciative of the outstanding troop leader she had in her youth. The troop participated in numerous activities, including cooking and baking, which Ann still loves to do. She didn’t turn out to be a Martha Stewart, but Ann was grateful for the numerous opportunities to do a variety of arts and crafts. The field trips to local businesses helped Ann eventually take her knowledge to a career in banking. Day camping, as well as overnight camping, were also an integral part of Ann’s troop experience, which she still remembers fondly. Sadly, this all ended in 5th grade when her family moved, but Ann cherishes all memories of her Girl Scout troop experience. Ann McAloon has been a member of the Girl Scouts of GCNWI Board of Directors for 10 years. Since joining the board in 2009, Ann has demonstrated exceptional service and dedication to the Girl Scout organization. In addition to her board role, Ann is currently serving on the Audit & Finance Committee. She received the Appreciation Pin in 2015 for her work with the board. Through her affiliation with Bank of America (BOA), Ann was able to successfully advocate for GSGCNWI to be named a charity partner for the BOA Chicago Marathon, starting in 2017. Thanks to Ann’s continued support, GCNWI has steadily grown our team of marathoners, each of whom has raised significant funds for Girl Scouts GCNWI. This past year, the GCNWI marathon team raised over $37,000, more than doubling funds raised in 2018. Funds raised by the marathoners are earmarked for general operations which directly impact girls. Ann was able to advocate for our council to be a charity partner in 2017, having the foresight to see that this can grow into a major revenue stream for our council. Ann’s service has council–wide impact and continues to grow. Thank you Ann! NARDA SEABERRY – THANKS BADGE Although Narda has been a volunteer for over 20 years, she didn’t start out as a troop leader. At first, she assisted with her daughter’s troop and with many service unit activities. Organizing Thinking Day for the service unit was what Narda really enjoyed doing. She was always amazed how this event brought the girls out of their shells and how they became more outgoing and focused. For Narda, the growth of the girls is what’s most important. Narda remembers one girl who was shy at first and wouldn’t speak at all. Because of her involvement in Girl Scouts, this girl eventually blossomed and became a top cookie seller. Narda herself “grew” in Girl Scouts. When her daughter Kyla was in third grade, her troop leader, Renee Jackson, wanted Narda to be a volunteer, but Narda was unsure of her abilities and kept refusing. Then Renee put a volunteer application in Narda’s mailbox and Narda decided she better fill it out. Narda soon met the service unit manager, Annette Ware, who wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. As Narda got more involved, she realized she could do it– and just a few years ago, she decided to lead a troop herself.

14

In recalling the years she has been involved in Girl Scouts, Narda considers her daughter’s achieving the Gold Award to be her best memory. What really impressed Narda was that Kyla put so much work into her project and wanted to do it on her own. When Narda would offer to help, Kyla would tell her, “I got this, Mom.” Kyla ended up collecting over 1,000 children’s books that she used to start a library in the pediatric wing of a hospital. It was lucky for Girl Scouts that Renee Jackson persisted and put that application in Narda’s mailbox. It’s evident that Narda is an outstanding volunteer who has evolved over the years.

ELIZABETH “BETTY” KUTZNER – 65 YEARS OF SERVICE Betty Kutzner was not a Girl Scout as a child but became involved as an assistant Brownie leader and continued with those girls as their leader from Junior Scouts through their Senior Scout years. The bond she had with those girls has continued to this day. Although spread throughout the country, these girls (now 71 and 72 year–old women) get together every two years. This past April about 20 women met in Missouri, where Betty lives now. Betty says they love to reminisce, and one of her favorite memories is of the train trips they took together to camp in Colorado. Betty was involved well beyond the troop level, having opened her home to Girl Scouts traveling through Chicago on their way to other events. She and her husband hosted girls for “The Magic of Messages”, a DuPage County Council Wider Opportunity in the 1990’s. Betty is a former President of the DuPage County Girl Scout Council. She also served as a National Volunteer where she visited other councils to review their charters. Betty was a very active adult scout and says that all of her experiences were memorable and that she thoroughly enjoyed everything she was a part of in Girl Scouting. Although now living in Missouri, Betty has maintained her life membership in our council. NANCY HACKETT – HALL OF FAME AND 60 YEAR PIN Nancy Hackett has been an exceptional volunteer for 60 years. Originally from Pennsylvania, Nancy served as a volunteer for councils in both Maryland and Illinois, taking on numerous positions such as troop leader, Council trainer, and Council Historian. The memory Nancy feels best exemplifies her Girl Scout experience was her attendance at the first Senior Roundup in 1956. Thousands of Girl Scouts from across the country and the world descended on Highland State Park in Milford, Michigan that summer. Nancy will always remember the fun and camaraderie of that first Roundup, especially between her and the girls in her patrol, who had to quickly problem–solve the construction of picnic tables. Nancy decided to become a Girl Scout volunteer because of how much she enjoyed scouting. After she graduated university and moved to Baltimore, she called the local Council and let them know she wanted to become a leader, and she’s been volunteering for Girl Scouts ever since. Nancy has always understood the benefits of Girl Scouting, but one instance really emphasized how valuable being a Girl Scout can be. When a new girl with a cognitive disability joined her troop, the other girls stepped up and worked with her to gain confidence and provide support. Truly a moment when Nancy and her troop stood for more. ALICE SNELGROVE – 60 YEARS OF SERVICE Alice Snelgrove believes strongly in the organization and renews her membership each year, even though she is not currently an active volunteer. She remembers as a seven year old in Tennessee going home from school to ask if she could be a Brownie – even if she didn’t know what a Brownie was. She progressed through the Girl Scout program, earning more merit badges than any other girl in her area. As a Senior Scout, Alice was chosen to attend the 1959 Roundup in Colorado Springs, serving as the patrol leader for her group. When Alice moved to Naperville, Illinois at the age of 25, she ‘inherited’ a very active Senior troop. They did lots of fundraising and had great parent support which allowed them to travel to Wyoming and to do canoe trips on the Wisconsin River. This troop was involved in establishing an environmental trail on the Prairie Path in the 1970’s and their efforts were documented in a national filmstrip.

Alice served multiple terms on the board and nominating committee of the DuPage County Girl Scout Council. Alice became good friends with Mabel Hammerschmidt, a GSUSA staff member who returned to DuPage County when she retired. Alice treasured Mabel’s Girl Scout memorabilia so much that when Mabel passed away, Alice and her husband drove three boxes of Mabel’s treasures to New York with the hope that it would be preserved and contribute to Girl Scout history. Alice believes that Girl Scouting is good for girls and has a significant impact on them, even if they are only scouts for a short time. Girl Scouting has been a wonderful part of her life. RITA WATT – 60 YEARS OF SERVICE Rita, whose camp name is “Little Bill,” remains a Girl Scout volunteer at age 89 because she is ‘still having fun”. She was not a scout as a girl, but came into the organization as a Brownie leader in Chicago. She progressed with those girls through Seniors. The highlight of the troop experience was a three week European excursion, which included a week at Our Chalet. Little Bill related that her troop got involved in activities like jumping into the frigid water at the side of the road near the Chalet, and introducing girls from other countries to sparklers and popcorn on the 4th of July. One of the girls from her troop was asked to come back as a staff member at the Chalet the following year. Little Bill says that she has helped with many camp chores like painting, cleaning and window washing. She was used to camping each Spring and Fall at Camp Wild Rose and was very sad when it closed. Little Bill continues to be a member of Troop 007, an adult group which still meets every other month. TOM COURTNEY – 55 YEARS OF SERVICE For Tom Courtney, his reasoning for becoming a Girl Scout volunteer always included the same statement, “It was a contiguity of marriage.” His wife, Rosemary, had been a girl member and then immediately became an adult volunteer, and Tom knew when he married her that he would also be serving Girl Scouts. When describing his most memorable experience as a Girl Scout volunteer, Tom has one of the most unusual stories. He remembers a DuPage Council Annual Meeting where he was given the task of portraying a “Green Angel,” with a six foot ladder as his platform, donning a green robe and tinsel halo to perform the important duty of announcing the Adult Recognitions. We don’t expect anyone to repeat that scenario. Although Tom came to Girl Scouts on the coattails of his wife, he made his own mark as a dedicated volunteer, and he is very much appreciated for being “man enough to be a Girl Scout.” MARY BARTUNEK – 50 YEAR PIN As a member of a Mariner Ship in high school, Mary Bartunek learned what it meant to be a confident young woman through Girl Scouts. So, after her high school graduation, Mary knew that she wanted to pay it forward. For that reason, she decided to become a volunteer, and she stayed with the ship for 27 years. The ship was her first love in Girl Scouting, but Mary’s second love became the Dream Makers, a group of adult volunteers who offer their singing expertise whenever and wherever a group of Girl Scouts is gathered. One of her fondest memories is attending a song leader workshop at Macy. Mary vividly recalls the attendees singing constantly, even after the sessions were over. That experience made such an impression on Mary, and as she puts it, “The best people in the world are Girl Scouts. The best Girl Scouts in the world are those who sing!”

29

Mary has several memories of when her girls “Stood for More”. One especially meaningful memory is of when her girls “adopted” a nursing home. They would visit at various times of the year, and at one point, they decided to make lap blankets from granny squares as gifts for the residents. When the girls found out that one of the residents was a former Girl Scout leader, they insisted that she pick whichever blanket she wanted. The girls were amazed that she chose one that was NOT perfectly made. When they asked her why she chose that one, she replied that the blanket she chose was made with the most love. After that encounter, the girls realized how important their visits were, so they began to drop by the nursing home at unscheduled times, usually stopping in on their way home from school. They would sing Girl Scout songs and have meaningful conversations with the residents. Mary was and is extremely proud of how caring her girls were to those senior citizens. It’s not unusual for a leader to have a girl who is difficult to handle– Mary has a striking memory of one such girl. During a competition weekend for the ship, this girl was constantly testing her boundaries. Mary took her aside and explained to her that if she violated one more rule, she would have to move in with the leaders and wouldn’t be permitted to participate in any of the extra activities. Unfortunately, the girl did not heed Mary’s warning, and the girl decided to quit the ship. A few months later, the girl came to a meeting. She asked Mary if she could rejoin. Mary took her aside and explained that her slate would be wiped clean, but she would be required to show proper respect. She later told Mary, “Thank you for caring so much.” Mary still receives a Christmas card from that girl every year. Mary has shared her wonderful talents with Girl Scouts for five decades. She is truly appreciated by so many. CORA LEE BLAZEK – 50 YEAR PIN Having never been a girl member, Cora Lee Blazek’s involvement started with her oldest daughter’s Brownie troop, when Cora Lee became the cookie and later badge mom for her other daughter’s troop. Cora Lee was then recruited to be the co–leader, leader and eventually, lead that troop of Cadettes for 12 years and stayed the leader even after her daughters graduated Girl Scouts. Her Cadette troop had many adventures together, one unforgettable trip taking them to Jamboree in Nashville. There were nearly 1,200 girls in attendance, and the weather was miserably hot, making it difficult to sleep at night. Being ingenious Girl Scouts, they found a way to get some relief: buying $3 tickets for the Grand Ole Opry and taking a 3–hour nap during the concert in the air–conditioned venue. Another memory that means the world to Cora Lee is of a phone call she received 25 years after her troop took an 8–week First Aid course together. One of those very girls called to thank Cora Lee, and to let her know that she had become a doctor, and it was that First Aid course that set her on the path to studying medicine. After a Service Unit Team meeting, Cora Lee applied for a position on the Girl Scout staff, and was thrilled to get a job at Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Her staff position gave Cora Lee additional opportunities to impact the lives of girls, including the organization of an troop for girls experiencing homelessness. Cora Lee loves the organization, and has seen Girl Scouts make a real difference in girls’ lives. She also appreciates the numerous lifelong friendships with both volunteers and staff members she has made along the way. She admires these friends for their true passion – the girls. And it’s very evident that Cora Lee has had that same passion for 50 years.

LYNN FREYBERG – 50 YEARS OF SERVICE Lynn Freyberg has been a registered Girl Scout since she was eight years old, 60 years total and 50 as an adult! Lynn has had many wonderful experiences Girl Scouting, being a Troop on Foreign Soil when she and her twin sister Leah Gerlach lived in Israel, and being an active Senior Girl Scout in DuPage County. One experience that stands out was volunteering as a Senior Girl Scout and a summer she spent working for a camp for young students with developmental challenges. LEAH GERLACH – 50 YEARS OF SERVICE As a vision impaired person, Leah Gerlach Girl Scouting allowed her to explore her potential and gave her a place to belong. Leah remembers wanting to learn to build a fire, and although there was some concern that her disability would put her at risk of being burned, she was not told she couldn’t try. She was told to prove that she could do it. She says she built about 20 fires on an early camping trip. Leah feels that Girl Scouting is an organization that empowers girls, and that the “Yes, I Can” attitude of scouting allows a safe environment for girls to express themselves on challenging topics. Leah was a member of TOFS (Troops on Foreign Soil) when she lived in Israel during grades 5 and 6. She learned how global Girl Scouting was as she interacted with Israeli and British Girl Scouts and Guides. Leah has been a Brownie, Junior and Cadette leader. She was a council trainer, camp counselor and helped at camp renovation days. She was on the DuPage Girl Scout Council Board for two terms before becoming its President. She has a degree in communications which she feels helped her when adults were disgruntled about the sale of Camp Chippewa Bay. Leah attended the National Convention in Indianapolis as a short–term national volunteer, helping to facilitate the Open Space Forum discussions. Favorite memories include camping and canoeing at White Pines State Park. She always enjoyed the final campfires when everyone could share what was special to them and what they would take away from that particular campout. LESLIE WORCESTER – 50 YEARS OF SERVICE Leslie started working for the Girl Scouts as a camp counselor while she was in college. She wanted to work in the educational field when she graduated, and an opportunity came open where she could work full time for the Girl Scouts.. A perfect fit for Leslie, she could share her love of the organization and what it gave her with new generations. A memorable moment when she knew she was making a difference in girls’ lives came when she managed the Program Aide training for Cadette and Senior girls. Leslie got to see them work at day camp and step out of their comfort zones and really shine. Some of these individuals grew up to be very close friends that have continued through to today. When Leslie was a first year counselor, she took a group out on an overnight. The girls wanted to do a night watch, taking turns to stay up and tend the fire and experience the sights and sounds of the night. The girls woke her up saying that they heard something in the woods nearby. That was the moment Leslie realized she was responsible for the girls and could not worry about herself.
