For nearly 30 years it has been my pleasure to share my passion for the outdoors. Getting girls outdoors gives them the opportunity to step out of their comfort zones, build their confidence, and learn to blaze their own trail. Girl Scouts are outdoor role models: they’re brave; they’re adventurers; they’re trailblazers. And Girl Scout camp gives girls the power of their potential in a safe, girl-led environment. Whether a first-time or experienced camper, this is a valuable experience you can’t get anywhere else. At camp, girls are free to make new friends, connect with nature, explore their creativity, and try new things. It’s also much, much more… At camp, girls unleash their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)TM. They develop the building blocks for a lifetime of leadership as they set goals, overcome challenges, and develop self-esteem. Whether it’s her first night away from home or her first success climbing to the top of the rock face, she is learning about herself and her connection to the world around her. Most parents and guardians experience a wide range of emotions when they drop a child off at camp. We understand completely and are here to help. We assure you that your girl will benefit from her camp experiences for years to come. At camp, she will be a trailblazer. We can’t wait to see you!

Your adventure begins here! This Girl Scout summer camp guide is packed with opportunities for girls, troops, and families to get outdoors. Browse these pages with your girl to plan your next outdoor adventure today.

Girl Scouts Are Outdoor Role Models We’re brave. We’re adventurers. We’re trailblazers. We’re a force. We’re Girl Scouts! It’s increasingly important to take time to unplug, put away the screens and technology, and spend time with yourself and the natural world around you. Connecting with nature in a girl-led setting is a big benefit of belonging to Girl Scouts.

Unleash the power of your G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)TM with a camp experience this year!

G I R L

o-getter: She’s bold, honest, and determined to succeed. In her mind failure is no reason not to get back up and try again. Camp allows her to face new challenges, strengthen her problemsolving skills, and overcome anything. nnovator: Thinking outside the box is her specialty, so she’s always looking for a creative way to take action. Getting outdoors allows her to put her imagination to use and think of new ways to protect our environment. isk-taker: Courageous and strong, she’s keen to try new things and embrace the unfamiliar. At camp she’ll explore beyond her comfort zone with a supportive network of friends and staff. Outdoor adventures let her bravery shine.

eader: She’s confident, responsible, and committed to changing the world. An experience at camp gives her the tools to build social bonds, inspire others, and take the lead like a Girl Scout.

wilderness trips Wilderness trips are intensive backcountry experiences that are ‘off the grid’ and away from the modern conveniences of camp and home. The experience includes carrying or paddling all personal and group gear, food and equipment on an overnight trip while following Leave No Trace principles. Backcountry Skill Level 1 & 2 will focus on the basic skills of working with a group in the wilderness, cooking meals over a fire, purifying water from the lake and traveling under one’s own power each day. After mastering the basics, girls may choose to advance to another level each summer.

Backcountry Level 1: Prerequisite: No experience necessary. One night primitive campout on site.

Level 2: Prerequisite: First level trip of any kind or camping experience recommended. Two or three nights on the trail.

Resident CampS

Wilderness trips provide a great opportunity to practice leadership at each level. According to the grade level and maturity of participants, girls are encouraged to take proactive roles in organizing details of the trip, like planning activities, navigation, group living arrangements, and problem solving on the trail.

Girls will be carrying/transporting 25-40 pounds of gear while traveling anywhere from 4-6 miles per day on foot (or 8-12 miles by water).

Level 3: Prerequisite: Level 2 trip, completion of Backpack Wanderer, or camp director approval. Three to five nights on the trail. Girls will be carrying/transporting 30-45 pounds of gear while traveling anywhere from 4-8 miles per day on foot (or 10-14 miles by water).

Level 4: Prerequisite: Level 3 trip, completion of Backpack Adventurer, or camp director approval. Five to seven nights on the trail. Girls will be carrying/transporting 30-45 pounds gear while traveling anywhere from 6-10 miles per day on foot (or 10-18 miles by water).

Council-Run Camps General & Important Information Camp Is For Everyone Special Considerations Help us ensure your girl’s success at camp. Our goal is to provide a positive camp experience for all girls. The more we know, the more we can help her grow. Caregivers of girls with special needs or unique habits should contact the appropriate camp director or Peggy Brothers at pbrothers@girlscoutsgcnwi.org so the best placement and appropriate accommodations can be made.

Becoming a Girl Scout Girl Scout membership is required to participate in camp. If your girl is not currently registered, a $25 membership fee will be automatically charged when registering for camp. This fee includes basic accident insurance coverage for all registered Girl Scouts as a supplement to existing insurance coverage.

Health and Safety Each camp prioritizes safety in everything we do, from walking with a buddy to a camper orientation on the first day of camp to learn about procedures. Our camps all follow standards set forth by Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Camp Association. Our Girl Scout camps offering summer camp programming are licensed by the state, and uphold state and federal codes for health, safety, site food service management, human resources, program design, and activities. Each camp also has a health supervisor who will contact caregivers if the need arises, as well as have established emergency procedures in consultation with local law enforcement and emergency services. Programs are held rain or shine. Each camp location has building and shelters where campers will be moved in the event of severe weather. Every girl must have a health history form on file to participate in summer camp. This is mandatory. A girl’s registration will not be considered complete until her health history is submitted. Please note: • Any medications to be taken while at camp must be accompanied by authorization to medicate form. • Campers with serious or life-threatening allergies must have an Allergy Action Plan on file. Please list any severe allergies or other important health information.

General & Important Information

Programs Grades listed for each program refer to the grade the camper will be entering in the fall. Girl Scout summer camp includes fun-filled days with activities that open up new worlds, provide new opportunities to build confidence, and allow every girl to just be a girl. Girls will participate in planning the week’s schedule in addition to participating in traditional and themed camp activities specific to their registered program. This ensures that no two weeks or programs are exactly the same.

Staff Camp staff is committed to creating a caring and supportive environment that respects each girl as an individual. They are selected based on their experience, ability to serve as role models, and their genuine desire to work with children. Staff candidates are at least 18 years old and have completed a thorough application and interview process which includes a background check. Every staff member is a registered Girl Scout and has completed position-specific training, as well as certification in CPR and First Aid. For the fourth year in a row, our resident camp programs also include international staff. These staff arrive from all over the world to work alongside and share their cultural backgrounds with campers and fellow staff.

Day Camps Camp Greene Wood and Camp Palos Girl Scout day camp programs are powerful experiences that provide incredible value. • The transportation method must be designated at the time of registration. • Day camp transportation routes begin around 7:45 a.m. and end around 4:30 p.m. Please see the schedule for locations available in your area. • In an effort to make transportation routes as efficient as possible for all campers, every effort is made to keep commuting times under an hour. Bus stops will be cancelled if there are not at least five riders registered for the stop by May 1, 2018, as last-minute changes to bus routes are difficult to accommodate. • Two weeks before camp begins, a confirmation will be sent via email. This confirmation will have specific bus schedule information such as pick-up & drop-off times and a transportation agreement. Campers must bring the completed agreement to camp. • We always welcome volunteers to help ride the buses. If this interests you please let us know by emailing camper@girlscoutsgcnwi.org.

BNSF Metra Train Option: Camp Greene Wood Only

• Transportation stops that list a Metra train station are where campers board the westbound Metra (BNSF) train in the morning, arrive at the train station near camp, and then ride the bus to camp. In the afternoon, campers ride the bus to the train station, board the eastbound train, and travel to their designated stop. Adult chaperones ride the train with the girls. The cost of the train ticket is included in the transportation fee. • Reference the BNSF Metra train schedule #1225 leaving Chicago Union Station at 7:45 a.m. M-F for morning routes and #1270 leaving Aurora at 3:20 p.m. M-F for afternoon routes. • Please arrive at your designated train stop location at least 10 minutes before your train is scheduled to arrive. • We always welcome volunteers to help ride the train. Volunteer-led Day Camps

Volunteer-led day camps Volunteer-led day camps are community-based summer camp endeavors undertaken by talented and enthusiastic volunteers who have organized a camping experience for Girl Scouts. Each day camp has a unique theme and specialized activities. Many volunteer-led day camps feature teen mentoring opportunities for older girls and an overnight for interested campers. These camps utilize a variety of sites for their programming, including state and county parks, forest preserves, and Girl Scout camps. All volunteer-led day camps are supported by council staff to ensure they meet numerous standards regarding program, budgeting, risk management, and health and safety.

Registration is handled by each day camp. Some volunteer-led day camps utilize GCNWI online registration system at www.girlscoutsgcnwi.org/summercamp. Volunteer-led day camps rely on adult volunteers to participate in all aspects of the camp program. Without you, these camps are unable to serve the girls in the community. Please contact the volunteer team leading the camp in your community about options and opportunities. Girls and volunteers from surrounding communities are welcome to attend.

Custom Outdoor Adventures

Troop Camping Opportunities!

Looking to plan a custom outdoor adventure for your troop, service unit, or group? We can help! Whether you want to spend a day at camp, an overnight, or a full weekend, we can build you a program that will meet your group’s needs.

Ready to tackle the outdoor with your troop? Rent a site at one of our camps to do some exploring and outdoor activities on your own! Practice your cooking skills over an open fire, experience nature on the hiking trails, and explore the night sky while stargazing. Enjoy the outdoors at each of our council-owned camp properties.

Why go custom? • Life gets busy! Custom adventures allow for more flexibility to fit your group’s schedule. • Your girls can choose what they want to do at camp. • Your adult chaperones (and you!) get to experience camping with your girls, with less pressure—you’ll have outdoor program gurus on your side

Go to www.girlscoutsgcnwi.org/camp for more information about renting a place for your troop to explore the outdoors. There you’ll find information about each of our properties and step-by-step instructions on how to rent a site.

You could….

Reminder:

• Organize an outdoor badge workshop, hike, campfire, or cookout • Plan a one night “You and Me” where caregivers and campers come out to camp together • A two night service unit skills campout • A Program Aide training for your Cadette troop • And even more!

To secure a specific location or date, we recommend you submit a property rental application six months in advance. Still can’t find what you are looking for? Our property registration team can help! Call them at 312-912-6371 or send an email to property@girlscoutsgcnwi.org

Troop Leader Outdoor Training In order to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all the girls and adults involved, we require special outdoor training for adults. Check out the Volunteer Tool Kit: Camp Trained Adult Section for requirements. Check upcoming training dates at www.girlscoutsgcnwi.org/training

Check out our Outdoor Adventure Planning Guide for more details! Visit www.girlscoutsgcnwi.org/ yearroundprograms to access the guide and instructions on how to start planning your custom program.
