A Year of Planning We’ve long known that 2012 promises to be a banner year for Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. First and foremost, we join our sister councils in celebrating the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting on March 12, 2012, and all year long. We then turn our attention to the Girls’ World Forum, part of the global centennial celebrations convened by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and hosted in Chicago July 12-17, 2012. This marquee international event provides an international forum that is planned by girls for girls. Celebrations of this magnitude require careful and sustained planning. We focused our attention in 2011 on the future, especially planning 100th Anniversary commemorations and events and the Girls’ World Forum, and the vital work of our Long-Range Planning Properties Committee. After lengthy study, this volunteer committee recommended streamlining our council’s property portfolio from 12 camps to a more manageable seven. Our board of directors approved the recommendations, and we are now engaged in using our finite resources even more effectively. Over the last three years, the council has successfully merged seven independent councils into a highly functioning, financially stable organization, and the single largest council in the country. To achieve this tremendous goal, significant unbudgeted investments in fiscal years 2009, 2010 and 2011 needed to be made including technology and systems integration, unified telephone system, nationally-recognized website integration and communications development, as well as evaluation of facilities usage and reengineered processes key to the delivery of Girl program and volunteer involvement needed to build the infrastructure of the realigned council. As we previously reported, these critical expenditures put significant strain on our resources at the exact same time the economy took a large downturn, resulting in investment losses, significant increases in pension costs, reduced charitable contributions and reduced income from both cookies and fall product sales, resulting in deficit budgets for all three fiscal years.
Jeanne C. Reynolds Board President
We have made significant strides to close the deficit budget gaps of the past years, putting the council on solid financial footing, and are happy to report that for FY12, we have achieved a balanced budget. Expenses have been reduced at a 3.1% annual rate over the last three years while revenue has increased at a 3.2% rate (CAGR). In FY11 we reduced expenses 5.3% and grew revenue at 5.7% year over year. As each of us knows from personal experience, the economy has negatively impacted investment portfolios. Our council investments, over the last few years have performed well given the challenges of the economic environment and have remained almost flat with a slight decline of .7%. On the nationally managed pension, the economy created another challenge to our finances: As pension plan investments failed to fund outstanding pension liabilities, the council continues to be responsible for the benefits gap under the plan which will increase to an annual cost of at least $931,796 until the year 2023. Thanks to the extraordinary work of our dedicated staff. 2012 represents a watershed year for our council as we mark our first year of operation under a balanced budget, fabulous 100th anniversary events and programs to build girls of courage, confidence and character!

Entrepreneurship Cookies
Once again, Girl Scout Cookies® provided thousands of young entrepreneurs between the ages of 5 and 17 with a sweet lesson in success. It’s a fact: girls of all ages build five important life skills by running their own cookie businesses: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. What else would you expect from the world’s best-known financial literacy and entrepreneurship program for girls?
Girls Mean Businesss!
Our partnership with Junior Achievement of Chicago helps instill in girls the desire, confidence, and skills to lead an enterprise and become financially self-sufficient. With a focus on work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy, the Girls Mean Business! initiative offers structured lessons tailored to each level of Girl Scouting.
Camp CEO
In 2011, our acclaimed Camp CEO celebrated its fifth year. In this capstone program, high school girls chosen in a competitive process enjoy a weeklong retreat at Camp Butternut Springs in Valparaiso, Indiana, in the company of some of the region’s leading executive women. These adult volunteers work closely with the girls all week, shattering stereotypes, bringing networking to life and urging the girls to dream big.
Today, women hold 90 of the 535 seats in the U.S. Congress — that’s only 17%. But 75% of these women are former Girl Scouts. That’s proof that Girl Scouting builds leaders! Source: Girl Scouts of the USA
To Get Her Where? In 2011, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning issued Go to 2040, the comprehensive plan for our region through mid-century (www.cmap.illinois.gov/2040). This plan has struck a chord with us as we ponder what the future will be like for today’s Girl Scouts. What will their world be like in 2040? And, central to our mission, how can we help get them there? We asked some of our most dedicated, loyal, and thoughtful Girl Scouts, our six girl representatives to the board. Chosen during a lengthy application process that last year included 70 outstanding applicants, these young women have a lot to say. You’ll find some of their wishes for themselves, Girl Scouting, and the world sprinkled throughout these pages. Read along, let yourself get inspired, and ask yourself: What can we do To Get Her There in 2012, 2040, and beyond?
Girl Representative to the Board: Kierra Franklin Kierra Franklin of Chicago has participated in many Girl Scout activities like mentoring younger girls in Lego Robotics, Camp CEO and winning a prize in the Reality Check video contest. She credits these activities, plus her cookie sales, with helping her develop a long-term goal of owning her own business. Girl Scouts has empowered me to become the fearless, courageous young lady I am today. I have learned to be a leader among my peers. In 2040, I want to be comfortable in my career as the head of my company and also have a loving family. By then, I hope the Girl Scouts will be more efficient in retaining older girls and be more recognized as the life-changing organization it is.
In 2011, we sponsored seven FIRST Lego League teams with support from corporate grants. An explosion of additional requests followed. We are committed to providing more STEM-focused opportunities. Sponsor a team for $1,000 in 2012 and change a girl’s future! Girl Representative to the Board: Neathie Patel Neathie Patel from Chesterton, Indiana, believes in the power of STEM fields to make the world a better place. Here’s her vision for 2040: I hope to be working as a cardiovascular surgeon, improving the lives of people and their families. By 2040, I will be making a difference. We will see many more women pursuing dreams that were once unheard of, like being a scientist. Girls will lead without the restrictions put upon them by a male-dominated society.
STEM
( Science, Technology, Engineering , and Math )
FIRST Lego League
When it comes to getting girls excited about STEM, few activities can match Lego Robotics. This fun program introduces students to engineering principles and challenges them to solve problems using ingenuity and teamwork. In late 2011, three teams sponsored by our council advanced to the Lego Robotics state finals. Congratulations to the Southside Divas, the Lockport Lego Legends, and the Moovers, who were the overall winners!
Journey World
Last year, Girl Scouts of all ages—as well as K-12 students in our service area—continued to enjoy full-day simulations at our experiential learning center. Journey World challenges girls to think creatively about commerce, entrepreneurship, science, math, and the environment. The 10,000 sq. ft. eco lab “It’s Your Planet!” guides budding scientists to explore a realistic ecosystem, while the “It’s Your Future!” simulated city engages students in “real” tasks like cashing a check as a bank teller.
74% of teen girls are interested in STEM but only 13% see themselves in a STEM-related career in the future. Girl Scouts show girls the potential for holding lucrative, meaningful jobs as adults. Source: Girl Scout Research Institute
Healthy Living Reality Check
When Girl Scouts research showed that 90 percent of teen girls would rather watch an hour of reality TV than hang out with friends, we knew it was time to act. Our solution: create the Reality Check initiative, capped by a video contest to let us know what girls really think about self esteem, their lives, and mixed messages from the media. We also hosted a Reality Check webcast with Kasia Pilewicz, a real-life, “fiercely real” model who competed in the 2011 season of America’s Next Top Model.
Girl’s Guides to Girl Scouting
The second phase of Girl Scouts of the USA’s transformative program resources yielded a comprehensive set of age-appropriate guides that complemented the journeys and focused on outcomes for girls. From Daisy to Ambassador, the Guides help Girl Scouts build skills, earn badges, and give service. The new editions, created with extensive input from girls, include badge requirements for contemporary subjects, ideas for “take-action” projects that focus on community service, and deliberate outcomes.
Studies show most girls’ self-esteem peaks around age 9, then plummets as they receive conflicting messages about their appearance, worth, and competence. Girl Scouting’s focus on courage, confidence, and character counteracts the harmful or confusing messages girls receive every day. Source: NYU Child Study Center
In 2012, we are guiding teen girls to create and communicate their opinions. Help 50 girls build their critical thinking skills with a $500 donation! Girl Representative to the Board: Katie Loftus For 17-year-old Katie Loftus of Chicago, a big part of healthy living is living confidently: In the future, I hope that girls are able to be confident in themselves, and not have any stereotypes placed on them. I hope that girls are able to accomplish what they set out to do. Katie knows that healthy, confident girls must be well-educated in order to reach their goals: I hope that everyone will respect each other, and do what they want and are passionate about. That’s why I hope that everyone will have access to a quality education by 2040.
Our World
Project Law Track
In 2011, Girl Scouts partnered with the Chicago Bar Association Alliance for Women to pilot this new program for 25 girls in sixth grade and older to learn more about careers in the legal field. The five-session program covers the law as seen on TV, law school, and law careers and culminates with a mock trial in a real courtroom. Both the pilot and a second session in late 2011 received rave reviews from the women mentors who participated by sharing their professional expertise and the girls, who are chosen in a competitive process.
Girl Representative to the Board: Emily Bartusiak Sixteen-year-old Emily Bartusiak of Deerfield, Illinois, a participant in Project Law Track and Camp CEO, has a lot to say about what our world might be like in 2040: I hope that girls will feel empowered to do anything they set their minds to and will never let anyone stop them from pursuing their dreams. I hope that girls will have all the rights they are entitled to, including the rights to receive an education, to enter the workplace, to speak their minds, to vote, and to live. Also, the world will be far more advanced in technology and medicine in 2040. Thus, much emotional and physical pain due to illnesses will be reduced, people’s lives will be easier (though not necessarily less complicated), and the environment will be healthier and more protected.
GirlSpace By holding educational programs throughout the year at approximately 40 Chicago Public Schools sites, GirlSpace provided a safe space for 3,000 girls in low-income neighborhoods who may not have access to a typical Girl Scout troop. Girls who participate in the program for the entire school year show significant progress in developing a strong sense of self and healthy relationships. They also learn to resolve conflicts and solve problems resourcefully.
Girls’ World Forum
Chicago is the host city for the Girls’ World Forum, the last of three global centennial celebrations hosted by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). More than 600 girls representing 145 countries will address the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals: to end poverty and hunger, to promote gender equality and empower women, and to achieve environmental sustainability. Girls will return to their communities to lead “take-action” projects that make the world a better place.
Girl Scouts love to dream of changing the world, and that’s what our Gold Award winners do. Take Mary Grace Weiss: her used instrument drive, A Common Note, collected 30 instruments for a grade school on Chicago’s West Side. Even better, her high school’s Booster Club plans to continue the drive each year.
Our Spaces
Long-Range Property Planning Results
During two years of volunteer-led planning, Long Range Property Planning Committee members reviewed input from thousands of girls and adult volunteers, analyzed volumes of statistical data, conducted site visits to 12 of the council’s properties and consulted with experts. Our board of directors ultimately voted to retain seven properties: Butternut Springs, Friendship Center, Greene Wood, Juniper Knoll, Palos, Pokonoka, and River Trails. The board regretfully voted to “rest” Morrison Program Center and Apple Acres, suspending all activities and reducing maintenance to a basic level following closing ceremonies and open houses. The board also voted to strategically divest of Happy Hollow, Meadowbrook, and Wild Rose, meaning these properties may be sold to new owners who will be good stewards of the properties that have meant so much to our Girl Scouts in the past.
Our New Gathering Place
Last July, a long-held dream became a reality when we moved into our new Gathering Place at 20 S. Clark St. in downtown Chicago. The new space is packed with girl-friendly features, including beanbag chairs, historical displays, murals of Girl Scout uniforms of the past 100 years, a “leadership ribbon” that suggests career paths for girls, and Girl Scout songs piped into the lobby. The Friendship Café, a lunchroom and catering space, and Girl Space, a workshop area and retail shop, round out the amenities. All girls and volunteers are welcome!

Honor a Gold Award Girl Scout with her name on a permanent trefoil in the leadership ribbon at our downtown Chicago Gathering Place for $250. Girl Representative to the Board: Molly Triolo Mokena’s Molly Triolo is 15 and has been in Girl Scouting for 10 years. Being elected a girl representative to the board has been a highlight: The biggest reward about being a girl representative is feeling like I can make a difference in the Girl Scout community. It really surprised me how many resources it takes to run an organization like Girl Scouts. When it comes to the future, Molly is not afraid to dream big: By 2040, I would like to see the end of world poverty and hunger. These problems are prominent in all communities, and I believe that if everyone held out a helping hand to others in need, poverty and hunger would diminish and eventually disappear.
Our Future
Our 100th Anniversary What do you do when you have a major anniversary coming up? If you’re the Girl Scouts and your 100th birthday is on March 12, 2012, you spend 2011 planning a variety of fun and festive activities! Our council’s 100th Anniversary Committee and subcommittees planned local activities and events like ceremonial Promise Circles and the brand-new Cookie Classic 5k Race, Walk, and Celebration To Get Her There. Also coming up: historic exhibits throughout the region and special community service opportunities to celebrate throughout 2012.
Girl Representative to the Board: Andie Krug When 16-year-old Andie Krug of Riverside sums up how Girl Scouting has helped her meet her challenges and goals, she thinks of her diverse interests: “Whether I’m swimming or singing or doing my work as class president, I have a plan of attack and can follow through. Being in Girl Scouting, especially during my teen years, has given me lots of confidence and an all-around healthy way to look at the world.” As for the future, that confidence takes the form of keeping her options open: “Some days I want to be a lawyer, some an engineer, and some days a Broadway star. Whatever I end up doing, I want it to be something I’m really proud of and that makes the world a better place.”.
Girl Membership
Our Girl Scout council impacts the lives of 86,695 girls in 245 communities in six Illinois counties (Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kankakee, Lake, and Will) and four Indiana counties (Jasper, Lake, Newton, and Porter). Christopher, Founder and Chairman Emeritus, The Pampered Chef; Amy Hilliard, Founder, President and CEO, The ComfortCake Company; James Reynolds, Jr., Co-Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Loop Capital Markets; and Marsha Serlin, Chief Executive Officer, United Scrap Metal.
Girl Scout Leadership and Innovation Awards: A Tribute to Achievement
In 2011, A Tribute to Achievement continued its mission of raising funds and in-kind revenues to benefit girls, many of whom could not otherwise afford to participate in Girl Scouting. The 2011 event honored Doris Christopher, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of The Pampered Chef, with the Luminary Award and Monica Weed of Navigant Consulting with the Girl Scouts’ Own Award. Additionally, BlueCross Blue Shield of Illinois received the Corporate Appreciation Award and Leo Burnett USA received the World’s Strongest Girl Award.
