The outdoors offers open space where children can move in more physically intense ways. This allows them to develop their movement capability and confidence— both of which create foundations for active lifestyles and general health.

The American Camp Association sponsored an independent survey of more than 5,000 families across the United States. Results confirmed that summer camp is a catalyst for child development, preparing campers to assume roles as successful adults. At summer camp, kids learn how to be with people who are different from them, learn that “I can” is more powerful than “I can’t,” and gain a sense of both independence and community.* Spending time outdoors in nature is different from playing or learning inside.

Outdoor experiences often place children in new physical, psychological, and social situations that motivate curiosity and foster a sense of discovery. Authentic challenges in nature require girls to become more selfaware and to cooperate, communicate, and problem-solve more effectively.**

Research shows that girls feel more confident and learn better when they’re surrounded by other girls. When boys aren’t around, girls take more risks because they don’t have to prove anything. Girl Scout camp provides a safe, space where girls feel free to be themselves, speak openly, and take chances.

Here, girls create their own adventures, deciding for themselves what, when, where, and how they spend each day. Being allowed to make choices at camp empowers girls to take charge in other areas of their lives, building confidence in their leadership abilities.

Beyond the fun, exercise, and skill-building, the things girls do at Girl Scout summer camp foster life skills they can’t get other places. We incorporate the Girl Scout Leadership Experience into everything girls do, which means she’ll do more, grow more, get more, and leave ready to unleash her inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)TM as she says “I did that!”

Try and love it. Try and fail. Try something new, try something different, try again. At Girl Scout camp, we give girls the chance to put their ideas into action, get handson, and support them as they master new skills, test boundaries, overcome selfdoubt, and stretch their potential.

1 • Introduction

Whether your girl is just beginning to explore the outdoors or is a camper extraordinaire, she deserves to experience the life-changing, memory-making, adventure of Girl Scout camp. So give your girl the gift of camp—she may spend a few days, a week, or the whole summer with us but no matter what, you’ll be amazed at what a little time at camp will do to develop her courage, confidence, maturity, and creativity. She’ll come home ready to take the lead from the classroom to the boardroom and beyond. We can’t wait to make memories with her... let’s go! * www.acacamps.org ** More Than S’mores, a report from the Girl Scout Research Institute, 2014, www.girlscouts.org

RIDE SING HIKE

Welcome to Agnes DeWitt Day Camp! Nestled on 152 acres within the Sourland Mountains, Camp DeWitt’s rugged beauty immerses you in lush forests, verdant fields, babbling brooks, and plenty of fresh air, sunshine, adventure, and freedom. Here you’ll test your limits, stretch your wings, find your footing, get dirty, unplug, and make a whole lot of memories—things we've been doing since 1958! Day camp runs July 6 through August 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and is open to girls entering Kindergarten through 10th grade. Camp DeWitt offers two categories of programs to choose from at Camp DeWitt: general and specialty. General programs include a full range of traditional outdoor opportunities, experiences, and challenges appropriate for your age and skill level. The programs grow with you, acknowledging mastery of a skill and inviting you to take the next step up and out! Specialty programs allow you to select a specific area to focus on, spending large portions of each day concentrating on what you’re most interested in. The rest of the time, you’re doing all the fun stuff open to everyone at Camp DeWitt, which may include pool time, hiking, cooking, field games, arts & crafts, singing, and more. Our camp features high-adventure facilities like archery for girls in 2nd grade and older, and a low ropes challenge course that flexes based on age and ability. Our state-of-the-art Activity Center acts as a central gathering point and offers shelter from extreme heat and major storms. The Girl Scout Promise and Law are at the heart of all of our programming, defining the skills, behaviors, and attitudes we value in our staff and campers. No matter which program you choose, you’ll earn at least one—and maybe more—badge to add to your uniform when you get back home. Thanks to camper feedback, we’ve incorporated more badge-earning opportunities in our general programs. Program fees include all activity supplies, one Camp DeWitt t-shirt per camper, daily afternoon snack, earned badges, and bus transportation. See page 12 for add-on options like overnights, lunch, and more.

Never been to DeWitt before? See page 19 for tour and open house dates!

3 • Camp DeWitt Day Camp

Camp has been a huge part of my life for over 25 years and I am very excited to kick off my third summer here at Camp DeWitt! Whether welcoming back returning campers or learning right alongside our new campers, every day is an opportunity for me to develop our program and to make this experience the best one yet. I can still remember my first day of camp and many days over the years, full of exciting activities like building a shelter in the woods, stargazing, cooking over a buddy burner, and so many all camp games. I hope every camper enjoys their time as much as I did. Some of my favorite activities here at Camp DeWitt are brooking with the girls, building campfires, and enjoying our sunsets from Engleman. I also love hearing songs (and laughter) filter through the woods throughout the day. The best part of my job is seeing a camper learn something new or try something they were afraid of doing. As a lifelong Girl Scout and longtime camper, I firmly believe in the magic summer camp holds. I hope you will join us and experience all we have to offer!

MEET THE DIRECTOR: Victoria "Thor" Laird This is my third year as Camp Director at The OVAL and I cannot wait to see what adventures this summer brings! I love the smell of campfires and burnt marshmallows, the sound of songs and chants off in the woods, and the sight of happy campers playing on the field. Most importantly, I cherish seeing the positive impact that Girl Scouts and the outdoor experience has on our campers. What am I most excited about this summer? Getting to be myself and share my silliness and love of the outdoors with all campers and staff. You will probably find me in mismatched socks and a paint-covered shirt, with a s’mores stick in one hand, a songbook book in the other, and absolutely loving life! I look forward to seeing you this summer and helping you continue your camp adventure!

Trading Post Each camp’s trading post is full of camp-specific patches, memorabilia, and gear ranging from $1.50 up to $30. Girls visit the Trading Post at least once during the week to shop for souvenirs for themselves and family back home. Camp Hoover

CLIMB

Welcome to Camp Lou Henry Hoover Resident Camp! We’ve been creating life-changing memories for girls since 1953. Time spent among the forests, hills, and lake of Camp Hoover’s 340 acres is a journey into independence—a place where you’ll test your limits, expand your horizons, hone your skills, overcome fears, get outside, unplug, learn, grow, and make lots of friends. Resident camp runs from July 5 through August 15, starting on Sunday and ending on Saturday each week, and is open to girls entering 1st grade through 12th grade. Camp Hoover offers two categories of programs to choose from: general and specialty. General programs include an array of outdoor activities, experiences, and challenges appropriate for your age and skill level like swimming, boating, arts & crafts, hiking, outdoor skills, field games, singing, and more! Specialty programs focus on a particular interest, spending part of each day concentrating on what you’re most interested in. The rest of the time, you’re doing the fun stuff included in our general programs. Plus, there’s plenty of all-camp activities like kapers (jobs that help keep camp running smoothly), big group activities, and gathering for meals in the dining hall. No matter which one you choose, our programs grow with you, acknowledging mastery of a skill and inviting you to take the next step up and out! The program you choose determines your housing type. In some programs, you’ll share a platform tent equipped with metal cots, mattresses, and a storage area. Just a few steps away from the tents are the bathroom facilities with flush toilets, hot and cold running water, sinks, and showers. Unit program shelters provide a covered area for meeting and cookouts. Indoor shelter is available during severe storms. In some programs, you’ll bunk in a cabin equipped with kitchens, bathroom facilities, sleeping rooms with bunk beds, and common rooms. In Outdoor Survival, you’ll sleep in a primitive shelter, with a bathroom facility that includes flush toilets and sinks with running water. An open-air, covered shelter provides cover; but don’t worry, you’ll get to shower at other sites during your stay. Resident camp fees include all activity supplies, admissions to outside facilities, meals, and snacks. See page 18 for add-on options like weekend stayovers and trading post.

Never been to Hoover before? See page 19 for tour and open house dates!

MEET THE DIRECTOR: Deb "Hook" Hooker Camp Hoover has been a part of my life since I was 9 years old! And I can still recall some of my favorite memories as a camper--from hiking, to sleeping out under the stars, to creating my own pinch pot of clay and, of course, the last night campfires. Each summer for me opens the door for a new group of girls to experience similar activities and carry away lifelong memories and friendships. I look forward to sharing the peace of a tech-free environment, favorite songs, and of course s’mores with everyone this summer. Camp has given me the opportunity to make friends from around the world, to learn new skills and to be the person I am today. I can’t wait to meet you this summer and share my love of Camp Hoover with you and your family!

Sessions: 4, 6 Cost: $450

Sessions: 1 Cost: $575

Calling all artists: This week is designed to strengthen your artistic eye! Sketch, paint, and create in the outdoors as you spend your days both in and out of camp working on your masterpieces.

Do you enjoy working on service projects? Is leadership your thing? Here’s your chance to spend a week at camp helping others and yourself. Gain leadership and service hours by planning and working on service projects at Camp Hoover and then work directly with younger campers to broaden your leadership experience.

This course provides the necessary tools to maintain safety both on and off the archery range covering range safety, range setup, the steps of shooting, equipment and repair, programs and lesson plans. Level 1 Instructors are well prepared to teach beginner archery programs in both indoor and outdoor settings. Minimum age requirement is 15. Successful completion of the course (passing both written and practical exams) provides a three-year certification.

SET SAIL II Sessions: 2 and 3 (2 wks.) Cost: $1,300 Want to take your sailing skills to the next level? Learn racing skills, boat maintenance, and how to solo a Sunfish as you tack around Swartswood Lake. Put your knowledge to work competing in a Sunfish regatta. All campers participating in boating activities prepare by learning lifejacket and water safety, which includes a deep water swim test. Campers enrolling in Set Sail II must have completed a week of Set Sail, or an equivalent sailing program. This is a two-week program with no additional stayover fee.

"I just wanted to thank you and your entire staff for running such a fantastic Girl Scout camp for my daughters. They love everything about Hoover and that is a testament to how great all of you run the camp." – Heather F.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING Sessions: 2 Cost: $950 Learn the basics of water rescue and safety. Earn the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification, as well as First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED. Campers participating in this program must be strong swimmers and demonstrate ability to complete a series of pre-course water tests including a continuous 300 yard swim, surface dive, a timed event, and more. Campers who do not pass these tests will be removed from the program.

Hoover Trading Post Hoover’s trading post is full of camp-specific patches, memorabilia, and gear ranging from 75¢ to $50. Girls visit the Trading Post once during the week to shop for souvenirs for themselves and their family. Help your camper flex her budgeting muscles by loading her account with some money to spend at the Trading Post during the registration process. These funds are also used to cover unit and staff photos, purchases at the Tack Shop, and spending money for out-of-camp trips. Unspent funds greater than $2 will be refunded. The Trading Post is also open during check-in and check-out periods for families and campers to visit.

Girls registering for back-to-back sessions have the opportunity to stay over at camp from Saturday to Sunday for an additional fee of $125. During the Stayover, all girls are housed together and may spend time at the waterfront, work on arts & crafts, have a little extra rest time, and round the evening out with pizza and a movie. Parents and family members can visit during the Stayover and take their camper off-site, if they would like.

How To Make a Payment

25 • FAQs

⇨⇨ After you have chosen programs for your camper, click on the dashboard. ⇨⇨ Under Financial, click “make a payment.” It may require you to create a billing contact—this can be the account holder or anyone responsible for paying for camp. ⇨⇨ Here you can add Trading Post money. The cut off to add funds for Hoover is June 29, 2020. Cut off for the day camps is one week prior to the session start date. ⇨⇨ Your camper is not registered for her program until her $75 per session, non-refundable, non-transferrable, camp registration fee is paid and her status is marked as “registered.” Without this payment, your camper’s status will be marked “enrolled” which means her spot is not secured. ⇨⇨ If you are applying for Financial Assistance, you still need to register your camper and pay the $75 per session, non-refundable, nontransferrable, camp registration fee. ⇨⇨ To pay pending camp tuition, return to CAMPWISE at any time, but no later than June 12, 2020. Click on the “Access Your CAMPWISE Account” button. You can return more than once to make payments. ⇨⇨ All accounts must be paid in full by June 12, 2020. ⇨⇨ Any order not paid by June 12, 2020 will be canceled and the $75 per session, non-refundable, non-transferrable, camp registration fee will be held. ⇨⇨ All registrations submitted after June 12, 2020 must be paid in full at the time of registration. ⇨⇨ After June 12, 2020, all enrolled/not confirmed campers will be removed.

You will receive a confirmation email that states your camper is registered. If you do not see the word “registered” under “Status,” log back in and make sure the registration fee was paid.

⇨⇨ On your camp dashboard, you will be able to fill out the needed Health History information and additional camp program forms. ⇨⇨ We no longer require a copy of immunization or insurance cards. Please be sure this information is accurate in the online Health History. ⇨⇨ Your dashboard contains a wealth of information including the Parent Guide, directions to the camps, packing lists, bus information, and the ability to upload medication information. ⇨⇨ Some programs require additional forms. Find them by visiting www.gshnj.org/summercamp and clicking "Summer Camp Forms." These forms must be returned by June 12, 2020. Note: not all programs have additional forms. ⇨⇨ The Parent Guide and additional information for each camp is posted in CAMPWISE and on www.gshnj.org/summercamp.
