Because We have of you Girl Scouts
2021 Annual Report
Dear Friend of Girl Scouting, For each one of the 11,751 girls we serve at Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey, her superpower is being a Girl Scout. Whether she is a Daisy or an Ambassador, she is preparing for a lifetime of leadership. We see the potential in all of our girls and know they have the courage and the confidence to improve their communities because of what they learn— and practice—as Girl Scouts. She grows into the leader she aspires to become each time she earns a new badge or high award, uses her Girl Scout Cookie Program profits to fund a community service project, welcomes first-time campers for a summer of fun, or solves a problem with confidence—all while being friendly and helpful. Despite the challenges brought on by a second year of social isolation, disrupted routines, and increased financial hardship impacting mental well-being, GSHNJ remains a safe place for girls to lean into sisterhood, connect with the community, and explore their interests and passions. Our council closed the 2021 membership year among the top councils by market share. While our overall number of registered members was less than in 2020, we ended 2021 with market share penetration and retention rates that were well above the national average.

We are proud of the new skills, experiences, and accomplishments our Girl Scouts have achieved and we are both thankful and grateful for our community. To our funders who believe that Girl Scouting is not just a thing to do, but a way to be. To our volunteers who give of their time and talent so effortlessly and with great compassion. And to our program partners who champion our girls through their generous support and who offer life-changing experiences. With your continued support, we are able to continue our mission to develop girls of courage, confidence, and character who make a lasting difference in their community—and beyond. Through grant funding, GSHNJ formed six community-based FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) robotics teams (in addition to our staff-coached team, the SheStormz), increasing participation in our girls-only robotics program by 600%. Though the pandemic created challenges to traditional team participation, these new teams were committed to participating. Each team, comprised of 5-10 girls and 2-4 adult volunteers, met at least once weekly both inperson and virtually.
11,025 Entrepreneurship experiences
To tackle the urgency of climate change, Girl Scouts joined forces with the Elliott Wildlife Values Project and American Forests to launch a nation-wide tree-planting initiative: The Girl Scout Tree Promise. It calls on all Girl Scout communities to plant, honor, and protect trees, with the goal of protecting natural ecosystems and helping to ease the devastating effects of climate change. By participating, Girl Scouts are empowered to plan and lead their own local, community-based activities. In collaboration with conservancy partners, GSHNJ hosted councilwide tree planting events and programs, identified planting sites, procured materials, and provided educational programming for staff-led programs, service unit plantings, and conservancy troop leadership opportunities. Between March and September 2021, almost 900 GSHNJ Girl Scouts and adult volunteers planted nearly 4,600 trees.

Throughout fall 2020, teams worked to build a robot to meet this year’s FLL challenge, “RePLAY,” which tasked them with developing innovative ways to encourage others to play and be active. Teams identified and researched a problem, designed a piece of technology—or improved an existing one—and built and coded their robot to perform missions. At the virtual Qualifier in January 2021, the Atomic Kittens (SU75) placed 19 out of 22, the Invincible Innovators (SU82) placed 9 out of 22, and the SheStormz placed 14 out of 20.

Girl Scouts Representing and Remembering
As part of Girl Scouts Love State Parks weekend, on September 11th girls, volunteers, and staff from GSHNJ took part in the Empty Sky Remembrance Ceremony at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. Girl Scouts participated in the opening procession, led the Pledge of Allegiance, and met prominent members of the community. Additionally, nearly 40 volunteers offered their assistance at the Empty Sky Memorial 5K Run/Walk the following day. Watch the opening procession.
Gold Award Girl Scout Sierra E. knows how empowering it can be for Black teen girls to participate in winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, where they are often underrepresented. When she noticed that she was seeing girls drop out of training and development programs because of the focus on racing and the pressures of sport in a co-ed environment, she decided to step in and make a change. Sierra developed a series of engagement sessions connecting girls from five states with guest speakers who are professionals in the field and provided an opportunity for the athletes in her audience to connect and support each other. One of the organizations she worked with will continue her inspiring work going forward. This is just one example of the 55 diverse Gold Award projects designed and completed by GSHNJ Girl Scouts during this last year.

In April 2021, Girl Scout members were surveyed through the Girl Scout Voices Count national survey. Analysis of the data shows that while overall satisfaction has decreased, the number of dissatisfied members has not increased significantly. Dissatisfaction is largely attributable to the pandemic. Regardless of satisfaction, more than 3 in 4 respondents intend to stay in Girl Scouts, indicating that even though this year was not the best, the majority of our members want to give Girl Scouts another try.
This year, GSHNJ began offering Youth Mental Health First Aid certifications to volunteers. Youth Mental Health First Aid is one of several courses developed by the National Council for Behavioral Health. The course is currently presented virtually and has been very well received, having sold out every session offered. Upon completion of the course, participants receive a three-year certification. GSHNJ gratefully acknowledges the partnership and support of EmPoWER Somerset, through which a staff member became a certified instructor. In MY2021 we presented 36 Troop Tip Tuesdays! These reminders and refreshers are quick Facebook Live videos targeted towards our volunteers regarding program opportunities and GSHNJ procedures. Some are timely, such as looking ahead to planning Girl Scout traditions and celebrations, while some are in response to leader or staff requests. Check out a Troop Tip Tuesday on Resume Writing Tips for Volunteers.

This year, GSHNJ continues to support adult volunteer enrichment via increasing the number of socially distant inperson trainings, new virtual trainings, and an annual favorite: YOUniversity. 2021’s weekend of enrichment workshops was presented via a hybrid of virtual and in-person sessions and was made possible via generous support from the PNC Foundation and the Fred C. Rummel Foundation.
