carolyn carter “This nomination completes the circle begun many years ago, in 1954, when Carolyn Elliott became a Girl Scout in Oxford. For the next seven years she developed lifelong friendships, learned leadership skills, the value of working together, and the importance of community involvement.” During her college years—1966-1970—and beyond, Carolyn received numerous awards for her service to others through the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. From Model Pledge (1966) to Mississippi Province President which culminated in being recognized in 1985 with the National Alumnae Certificate of Merit. Those honors were followed by awards and honors from the Pilot International Service Organization. In 2007 Carolyn led the effort in founding Project Lifesaver—a lifesaving rescue program for Dementia/Autism clients who may wander away from home—for the Oxford/Lafayette County area. After a successful career as a businesswoman in Oxford (co-owner of Elliott Jewelers), Carolyn decided to teach—first in Water Valley, then Lafayette Elementary School, where in 2006, she was named Teacher of the Year and in 2009 Renaissance Model Classroom Teacher of the Year. Personal values make a difference and Carolyn learned those values from her parents and from being a life-long member of First Baptist Church where she has served in numerous capacities. She worked as Director of Pre-school Ministries and currently serves as Church Treasurer and Vice Chairman of the Administrative Committee. In 2010 Carolyn authored an inspirational book which highlighted times throughout her life that she had been the recipient of God’s mercy and grace. One More Heartbeat has been a lasting encouragement to countless others who have had to face struggles in their lives. “It is a lifetime of selflessness that has brought Carolyn to this point, and it has been a path which has been steady over many years.”

Marcia has facilitated parenting classes and presented programs and lectures relating to sexual abuse. She helped hospice patients with loneliness, isolation and fear within a spiritual framework, and she assisted their family members with issues relating to bereavement. The Oxford community has benefited from her volunteer work: Oxford Public School System, Chaplain for Baptist Memorial Hospital, and with United Way of Oxford. She is currently a Board of Director of the Literacy Council, Food Pantry, Leadership Lafayette, and Habitat for Humanity, and serves as a Board Member for Doors of Hope Transition Ministries. Marcia is an Associate Minister at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Her church ministry includes the clergy, Sunday School, speaking engagements, visitations and counseling. Her ministry clearly extends outside the church to all those within her sphere of influence. She has a passion for ministering to women everywhere. Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. One girl can make a difference. Together they can change the world. You can help by making your gift to Girl Scouts today! To invest in our local girls, visit www.girlscoutshs.org/donate and help us change their world tomorrow.
Girl Scouts Heart of the South’s mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. We have 10,000 girl members from 5 – 18 years old and 3,100 adult volunteers located in 59 counties across the Mid-South.. Nationally 21% of girls ages 5 – 18 live in poverty. In the Mid-South, 47% live below the poverty level. This means that too many girls in our area do not have access to the kinds of vital programs that help them gain the needed life experiences and learn the necessary leadership skills that will enable them to break the cycle of poverty and avoid risky life behaviors including gang membership, teen pregnancy, and drug use. Girl Scouts Heart of the South provides girls with the resources that allow them to develop those leadership skills and positive behavioral traits that are critically necessary in today’s fast-paced society. Through Girl Scouts, girls receive a well-rounded program mix that helps them make strong connections with positive role-models in their communities, empowers them to be confident, caring, and contributing leaders, and shows them that they are capable of making a difference in their world. But we can’t do this alone; we need your help to make sure every girl ages 5 – 18 who wants to join Girl Scouts has that opportunity. Your gift can make a difference in the life of a local girl today and in our community tomorrow.
Invest in girls. Change the world.
