Girl Scouts is an Agent of Change

t

Thoughts from our GSHS Council CEO

here’s an old saying, “If nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies!” It may sound simple, but there may be no better way to describe the joy I feel as I look back upon this past year at the amazing changes that have taken place here at GSHS. I see our council - our girls and wonderful volunteers taking flight out into the world, showing everyone just how transformative Girl Scouts can be. From imagining and embracing new initiatives for girls, women, and families, to the early adoption and implementation of CEI, our staff and our volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure that Girl Scouts continues to be the premier experience for today’s girls.

The Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself

Nationally, Girl Scouts realizes that we must seek new ways to engage girls, their families and volunteers - all things that we have already begun to do here at GSHS, and many of our local efforts are gaining national attention! In January, I had the privilege of being asked by GSUSA to speak to the newest group of council CEOs about the many changes we have made here at GSHS and the positive impact we are already starting to see. In addition to being able to talk to them about new outreach initiatives like our GPS newsletter, Troop 901, the new Evergreen League, and Girl Sprouts ( just to name a few), I was also pleased to educate them about our National Stand Beside Her Movement which continues to gain traction with more and more councils and organizations becoming involved almost every day! I encourage you to be inspired and get involved, too! Girl Scouts is for everyone - no matter what your age! If you want to be a part of an organization that’s changing lives here and across the country, volunteer. Through new adult development opportunities such as our upcoming Volunteer Leadership Summit, GSHS is committed to helping our volunteers become their best selves - both as Girl Scout leaders and beyond. So to our current volunteers - and to those who are just starting your Girl Scout adventure - welcome, and thank you for working together with us to change the world of tomorrow by empowering girls today! All my best,

and others, respect authority, use resources wisely,

MELANIE SCHILD | Chief Executive Officer Girl Scouts Heart of the South melanie.schild@girlscoutshs.org

March 12, 2016, marks 104 years of Girl Scouts!

j

uliette Gordon Low envisioned an organization that would prepare girls to meet their world with courage, confidence, and character. In the midst of the Progressive Era—and at a time when women in the United States couldn’t yet vote—she sparked a worldwide movement empowering girls to embrace, together, their individuality, strength, and intellect. Inspired by a meeting with Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts, in 1912, Juliette telephoned a cousin and announced, “I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we’re going to start it tonight!” On March 12, 1912, Juliette (affectionately known as “Daisy” by her family and close friends) gathered 18 girls in her hometown of Savannah, Georgia, to share what she had learned abroad about a new outdoor and educational program for youth. With this, the Girl Scout Movement was born. Read more about Juliette Gordon Low and the history of Girl Scouts at www.girlscouts.org.

Along with Juliette, these first Girl Scouts blazed trails and redefined what was possible for themselves and for girls everywhere. They played basketball. They hiked, swam, and camped. They learned to read the world around them—for instance, by studying a foreign language and telling time by the stars. They shared a sense of curiosity and a belief that they could do anything. But most importantly, just like Girl Scouts across the country and around the globe today, they offered a helping hand to those in need and worked together to improve their corner of the world. From that first gathering of a small troop of 18 culturally and ethnically diverse girls, Juliette broke the conventions of the time—reaching across class, cultural, and ethnic boundaries

to ensure all girls, including those with so-called disabilities, had a place to grow and develop their leadership skills. That small gathering of girls “Daisy” hosted over a century ago has grown into a global movement in which all girls can see themselves reflected. Today, 104 years later, the vision of Juliette Gordon Low lives on in the nearly 3 million Girl Scouts in 92 countries and more than 59 million Girl Scout alumnae who carry on her legacy. United across distance and decades by lifelong friendships, shared adventures, and the desire to do big things to make the world a better place, she is remembered and honored by generations of people whose lives have been touched by Girl Scouts, the premier leadership organization for girls around the world.

There’s no better way to say, “Happy Birthday, Girl Scouts!” than to give the gift of yourself! Visit www.girlscoutshs.org/volunteer to find out the many ways you can walk in Juliette Gordon Low’s footsteps and help us build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place!

A Message from our GSHS Board Chair

c

ourage, confidence, and character - “The 3 C’s” - these qualities are the heart of Girl Scouts’ mission. As members, volunteers, GSHS staff and board members, we use these words every day to describe what Girl Scouting does for girls, but rarely do we take the time to think about what these characteristics really convey. Courage: The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.* Confidence: Belief in oneself and one’s powers or abilities; self-confidence; self-reliance; assurance.* Character: Qualities of honesty, moral excellence, or the like; integrity.* In studying these definitions, I think we can all agree that each and every one of us could do no better than to become people of courage, confidence, and character. If everyone embodied these three traits, the world would definitely be a better place! Thinking about the true meaning of our mission inspires me even more to want to do whatever I can to ensure that every girl, everywhere, gets to share in the Girl Scout experience! It takes people of courage, confidence, and character, to pitch in and to want to make the world a better place. If you believe in “The 3 C’s” and feel called to make a difference in a young girl’s life, I encourage you to join us in the exciting future that is Girl Scouts Heart of the South! Not able to volunteer? You can still help Girl Scouts Heart of the South fulfill our mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place by “Investing in Girls.” With your help, we can continue to provide these experiences of a lifetime to so many more girls in our area.

Local GS Leader Recognized for Living “The 3 C’s” Angela Trillo has been a Girl Scout leader in the Germantown, TN area for more than four years. When her daughter expressed interest in becoming a Girl Scout, the troop needed a leader, and Angela did not hesitate to step up and volunteer. Originally from Venezuela, Angela says, “Volunteering is just part of who I am.” From Venezuela, to Florida, and now in Germantown, she has spent her life serving in various capacities including working with the local Catholic School system, volunteer teaching, working with animals, and now with Girl Scouts. Angela’s face lights up when she talks about her various volunteer work. She truly lives “The 3 C’s” - courage, confidence, and character, and she has a passion for working to make the world a better place. Her life of service was recently recognized by her professional peers at Bank of America where she works as a Relationship Manager. Co-workers nominated Angela for the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA), honoring her for her many hours in service to others. Nomination for the President’s Volunteer Service Award is open to volunteers of all ages and is awarded based upon the number of demonstrated service hours to many accredited organizations - including Girl Scouts! For more information, visit www.presidentialserviceawards.gov.

By making a difference in the life of a girl, Girl Scouts makes a difference in the world. Each and every girl can be an agent of change, and as volunteers or Girl Scout supporters, we help make that change happen. If you would like more information on how you can volunteer, how you can help financially, or if you are interested in future GSHS board membership, please call Girl Scouts Heart of the South at (800) 624-4185. Thanks and best wishes,

GSHS Holds 5th Annual Women of Distinction Luncheon honoring women in the Oxford-Lafayette-University Area

g

irl Scouts exists to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place - essentially, to inspire and to build Women of Distinction. On November 4, 2015, Girl Scouts Heart of the South was pleased to present our 5th Annual Women of Distinction luncheon honoring accomplished and serviceminded women in the Oxford-Lafayette-University area.

At what has grown to become one of the most anticipated events of the year, GSHS proudly recognized our fifth group of accomplished and altruistic women. In addition to honoring ten new Women of Distinction at this year’s event, the local volunteer committee proudly introduced the first Oxford-Lafayette-University area Girl Scout of Distinction, Annabella Ware, alongside the adult nominees. During this 5th anniversary luncheon, returning Master of Ceremonies Mary Haskell and Women of Distinction Committee Chair Vicki Sneed recognized each of the event’s prior nominees, several of whom were among the over 200 in attendance, and observed a moment of silence for those who have passed in the five years since the event began. Under the continued, enthusiastic guidance of Sneed and fellow committee members Jennifer Eastland, Mary Haskell, Margaret King, Molly Meisenheimer, Katie Naron, Kyle Still and Abi Rayburn, this year’s luncheon raised over $17,000 for Girl Scouts Heart of the South.

Before the presentation of the nominees and ultimate naming of this year’s Woman of Distinction, attendees and nominees alike were treated to a lighthearted and inspiring message from keynote speaker Gail Pittman, known nationwide for the popular tableware and home goods company that bears her name. A former educator, Gail left full-time teaching in 1979 to stay home with her children. Finding a need to continue to supplement the family income, she was inspired by a particular pottery bowl she spotted in a specialty store. Deciding that she could make that herself, her kitchen table became her studio. She laughed as she told the audience that once her husband began introducing her at parties as, “This is my wife, Gail. She makes bowls. Do you want one?” she was in business, and what began as a hobby grew into a multi-million dollar operation now based in Ridgeland, MS. Ultimately, her message to the crowd was simple - if you dream it, you can do it - exactly what Girl Scouts seeks to instill in our girls every day.

GSHS Participates in Operation Feed Mid-South Food Bank’s Annual Food Drive

o

n May 27, 2015, girls from several troops and members of GSHS staff helped deliver 6,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to the Mid-South Food Bank’s food depot on South Dudley Street. The two dozen Girl Scouts and council representatives had a chance to tour the Food Bank and learned more about the important work they do helping the one out of every six people in our region who experience food insecurity. David Stephens of the Mid-South Food Bank presents Kimberly Crafton, GSHS Director of Development, with a plaque in recognition of GSHS’s participation in Operation Feed 2015.

The Mid-South Food Bank supplies all kinds of food to 228 agencies in 31 counties in west Tennessee, north Mississippi, and east Arkansas, including senior programs, youth programs and daycares. David Stephens, Community Relations Manager of the Mid-South Food Bank said the Food Bank’s agencies were very glad to get the cookies, because everyone likes a little treat now and then! Girl Scouts Heart of the South was very pleased to have participated in Operation Feed. Our 6,000-box donation was worth $24,000 — “cookie-flavored” icing on the cake of the Mid-South Food Bank’s annual food drive!

Hailey, my youngest, woke up this morning and said she couldn’t wait to go to school and tell her teacher and friends how much fun she had and about all the stuff she won. This year’s events took place over four weekends in January and February in the Greater Memphis area, Jackson, TN, Grenada, MS and Tupelo, MS. Inspired by the idea that there’s nothing better with cookies than milk, this year’s “Moo-velous” Cookie Rally attendees got to make all kinds of cow-themed crafts, get their nails done with cow-spotted artwork (with help from local Kappa Delta chapter members), play cookiethemed games, bounce on giant inflatables and practice their selling skills! What fun! We can’t wait for next year!

Invest in Girls. Change the world.

Girl Scouts head to The Great Outdoors to learn that

GREEN IS GOOD.

As a kid, Mary spent large amounts of her childhood in The Great Outdoors. This lifestyle

helped her grow up to be a fit, creative, adventurous adult who protects the environment. “Today our young people spend way too much time watching television, playing video games or being on the computer. I want my kids to head off on their bikes or on foot to explore a trail, canoe or swim in a lake. Maybe they can learn to ride a horse or just meet up with some friends to create an outdoor adventure all their own,” Mary says. Mary is not the only mom who understands that time in The Great Outdoors has a positive benefit for today’s girls. Increasing evidence supported by doctors demonstrates the many benefits of nature on children’s psychological and physical well-being, including reduced stress, greater physical health, more creativity and improved concentration. Many factors have come together to push children indoors including land development and more people living in cities, additional demands on children’s time including homework and structured activities, video games, the Internet, and parental fear - particularly of strangers. In today’s society of indoor children, personal connections with nature seem hard to come by. “Last time I checked, it was pretty tough to have a sense of wonder about nature when you’re inside playing video games,” states Mary. Like many Girl Scout moms, Mary sees the need to work as an advocate in her children’s lives and to think about the potential of nature to improve their health and well-being. “Without building a connection to the natural world when they are young, children are less likely to possess much of an affinity with The Great Outdoors as adults.” At Girl Scouts Heart of the South, we strive to make sure that every girl ages 5–17 can experience The Great Outdoors. Each summer we host residential camps in both Tennessee and Mississippi. We give city, county and urban girls a chance to realize that BEING GREEN IS GOOD and to marvel at the wonders of nature. At camp, girls can disconnect from technology and connect directly with nature - all while having tons of fun. They can learn to canoe, hike, ride a horse, swim and so much more just by spending a week at camp. But for some families, a trip to Girl Scout Camp is as expensive as a trip around the world. You can help make sure that every girl ages 5–17 gets the opportunity to GO GREEN and get into The Great Outdoors through a simple gift to Girl Scouts Heart of the South.

The average camp scholarship granted to a girl in need is $175 – $200, and the cost to go to camp is between $350 and $450 per girl. Your gift of any amount will help give girls The Great Outdoors. To donate, just complete and send in the attached envelope along with your donation or visit our website at www.girlscoutshs.org/donate to give online.

C OURT OF AWARD S

Attention Service Unit Teams: It’s Time to Start Planning Your Service Unit Court of Awards! GSHS encourages Service Units to present their own local-level Court of Awards ceremonies to allow girls of every age level and all volunteers to be honored in front of parents, friends and community leaders - where it really counts. These events present an opportunity for younger girls to see older girls achieve higher awards inspiring them to stay in Girl Scouts and achieve new heights themselves. In addition, a GSHS council staff representative will be in attendance to recognize local Gold Award recipients, to present certain GSUSA Adult Awards for volunteers, and speak about upcoming council initiatives and summer camp opportunities. Volunteers and Gold Award recipients will also be recognized on a council-level at the Grand Celebration on April 30, 2016, however, through the implementation of local Court of Awards ceremonies, we hope to serve and honor every girl in every corner of our region. To help Service Units plan a great Court of Awards, GSHS has developed a Court of Awards Grand Celebration Guide for Service Units guide which can be found at: http://bit.ly/gshs_COAPlanningGuide. If you have questions, please contact Jenny Jones, (662) 350-6041 or jenny.jones@girlscoutshs.org.

On February 3, 2016, Mrs. Frances W. Manley (front left) visited the Heritage Center accompanied by GS alumnae Nancy Cochran (back left), Pat Moody (back right) and Barbara Arnold (front right). Looking at the many pictures and artifacts on display there, Ms. Manley - now 96 years young - shared countless stories of her Girl Scout adventures here in the GSHS council region dating back to the 1930’s. As she joyfully described first-hand so many of the events going on in the pictures in the archives, it was clear to everyone present and listening that Mrs. Manley’s enthusiasm for Girl Scouts is still as passionate today as it was then. She is inspiring proof that Girl Scout fun and friendship never fade! Camp gives her cool new experiences! 72% of girls surveyed said that Girl Scouts gave them the chance to build their skills or try new outdoor activities. Camp makes everything better!
