A fond farewell convey the profound sense of peace, joy and love I felt in those moments. This experience allows me to be steadfast in my faith that women will find a way to lead the planet to a place of peace.
I began my life’s journey as an eager, seven year old camper at Camp Dellwood and now the journey ends where it began. But oh the places I’ve been! Girl Scouting has taken me to every corner of the United States and singing around campfires in Japan, Mexico, Brazil and South Africa. I joined my sister Girl Scouts as we sang Kumbaya and linked arms with our sisters from Israel, Palestine, India, France and the USA. Words cannot
I have been blessed to have a career that allowed me to live my passion every day. It has been my privilege to work side by side with people of all faiths, races and economic status who share my values. All of us shared a common sense of community and giving, and what a great way to spend one’s work life. My goal was always to serve, and being able to lead has been a high honor. I leave you with a heart of gratitude knowing you are in good hands with your new CEO, Danielle Shockey. I want to thank the board and staff for honoring my wish to not have a retirement celebration. If you wish

to acknowledge my service, please contribute to the council so the program activities that take girls outside to the natural world can continue. Somewhere, there is a seven year old girl who has much to give the world, but first she needs to experience the endless possibilities of her universe. Your contribution will give her that chance and let her find her voice. Thank you for allowing me the honor to be your leader. I hope you have a warm memory of our time together. I wish you peace, love and joy. Always a Girl Scout,
Deborah Hearn Smith

Giving back
Celebrating Deborah Hearn Smith’s legacy The countdown is on, with only days left before longtime Girl Scout CEO Deborah Hearn Smith retires, leaving behind a 47-year legacy of service and a relentless commitment to girls.
when the five central Indiana councils merged, Smith took on the new challenge as CEO of Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, overseeing girls and program in 45 counties.
Throughout her years of service, Smith continued to experience feelings of renewal and growth as she took on various challenges to push herself and the organization to new heights.
Most notably, Smith pioneered the major feat of launching a multi-year capital campaign to build the stateof-the-art Leadership and Learning Center in Indianapolis. Smith dreamed of creating a place that Girl Scouts of Central Indiana could call its own. This would be a place where adult volunteers could come together and be provided the tools necessary to help them live out the Girl Scout mission to guide the next generation of girls into proud community leaders.
She started with intentions of summer volunteering, but soon found herself in leadership roles directing camp services, facilities and technology, and then CEO of Girl Scouts Hoosier Capital Council. That was only the beginning. In 2007,
Her dream was realized when the building opened in fall of 2016. As her retirement draws closer, Smith reflects on her time impacting the lives of nearly 1 million girls throughout her unparalleled career of service with Girl Scouts. She’s not done yet; Smith would like for tribute gifts that are received in honor of her retirement to be used to provide outdoor experiences for girls of color. To donate a gift in honor of her retirement and increase the funds that will support girls of color, please contact Leslie Scott at 317.924.6838 and help us continue her legacy.
During the past few months, Deborah Hearn Smith has received several awards and honors including recognition in the Congressional Record by Rep. Susan Brooks, a Sagamore of the Wabash signed by Governor Eric Holcomb, and a proclamation from City-County Council President Maggie Lewis. 3
