Campaign to Build Women Leaders
Dedicated volunteers are the heartbeat of any nonprofit organization, and Girl Scouts of central Indiana is no exception. With more than 18,000 volunteers, it is hard to identify each volunteer who makes Girl Scouts of Central Indiana such an incredible organization, but we would like to tell you about Suzie DeLay. As a lifetime member, Suzie has served many years as a volunteer. Her impact on the lives of girls she has touched has not gone unnoticed. Suzie have served on the Cookie Committee, service team, the Outdoor Curriculum Committee and has participated as a facilitator. She also runs a cookie delivery site. She arrives bundled up and eager to help, and brings soups for volunteers and delivery truck drivers to enjoy. Suzie realizes the value of Girl Scouts of central Indiana and that it takes more than volunteer hours to support our 40,000 girls. At our Annual Meeting in April, our capital campaign chair, Denny Sponsel, asked attendees to support a Home of Our Own, donating $25 per month for 40 months. Without missing a beat, Suzie stepped up to the plate, accepting his challenge. Suzie, thanks for your unceasing support and generosity.
The $6 million campaign to build a Leadership and Learning Center is well under way. The capital campaign is gaining momentum as we continue to discuss the advantages of having a Home of our Own with community leaders, business leaders and volunteers. They understand and agree that the time is now that we provide the necessary facility that will allow for the training needs and collaboration of our adult leaders. The Leadership and Learning Center will include a technology and resource center; space for volunteer collaboration and education; program and camp services; Girl Scout cookie distribution area; and a Showcase.
We know this is a marathon and not sprint, but we are making strides, and have raised more than $2,000,000. With the leadership of Denny Sponsel, our campaign chair, capital campaign volunteers and staff, a Home of our Own will be accomplished. For more information, please visit

The 25th annual Ice Cream Social on the Circle On July 11 , Girl Scouts of central Indiana invaded Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis for the 25th annual Ice Cream Social. Thanks to the American Dairy Association of Indiana, Girl Scouts of central Indiana was this year’s benefactor of the ice cream social. For just $3, ice cream lovers received a very generous portion of Edy’s Grand Ice Cream and, they then had the opportunity to create their own sundaes using various toppings provided, including Girl Scout cookie crumbles. Thanks to the American Dairy Association of Indiana and the many ice cream lovers, this year Girl Scouts of central Indiana will receive $6,800. In addition to enjoying ice cream sundaes, the younger visitors had the opportunity to visit the Girl Scout booth and participate in a wide variety of activities.
Kids visited the Math and Science van where they had fun learning about STEM – science, technology, engineering and math. They also had the opportunity to get active and burn some calories by jumping rope and playing with skip-its. Thanks to all of our volunteers who helped make this day a huge success!

No limits to what a girl can do We are dedicated to providing opportunities for girls, and having fun with them along the way. With the support of our volunteers giving of their time, talent and treasure, we are able to impact the lives of more than 40,000 girls in central Indiana. We want every girl to feel so excited about her future that she can hardly wait for it, because
she knows she can achieve anything she sets her mind to.
Do you know an adult who is encouraging and would foster a community of discovery and support for girls? 2
That feeling starts with our compassionate volunteers who encourage girls in an environment where girls are comfortable, making every day the best day ever. To get involved, contact LaQuita Maxey, senior director of membership, at 317.924.6820 or lmaxey@girlscoutsindiana.org.

In Remembrance
Marie A. Pickens Girl Scouts lost a dear friend and leader recently with the passing of Marie A. Pickens. Marie was the assistant director for the Hoosier Capital Girl Scouts from 1970-1976. She was selected to be the executive director in 1976, and served in that capacity until her retirement in 2001. Under her leadership, the council membership grew and many new
programs for girls were initiated. Marie’s gentle spirit will be missed by all who were privileged to know her.
