Our CampsÂ
Camp Dean
Camp Dean has 160 acres of wetlands, woodlands, and prairies for campers to explore. Located in Big Rock, about an hour west of Chicago, Camp Dean offers a unique camp setting for girls that is far enough for adventure and independence but still feels close to home. The facilities include four program centers, platform tent and sleeping cabin units, grassy sport fields, pool, private pond, trails, creek, dining hall, health center, camp office and more.
Camp Far Horizons
Camp Far Horizons is located near the Mississippi River in Hanover (about 30 minutes southeast of Galena) and has over 235 acres of woods and many nature trails. Camp facilities include a central dining hall, outdoor pool with showers, craft and nature tents, archery range, rappelling tower, volleyball field, and health center. Girls sleep in screened-in, platform tents in units containing 12-36 girls. Each unit is equipped with a wash stand, running water, latrines and a fire ring.
Chapman Hills
This 105-acre camp is located in southeast Wisconsin, about 1 hour and 10 minutes from Rockford and only 22 minutes north of Lake Geneva. One lodge is open year-round for troop camping. There are three platform tent sites available April to mid October.
Camp McCormick
Camp McCormick has over 400 acres of woods and meadows and is located a few miles south of Rockford, about 1 ½ hours northwest of Chicago. Camp facilities include a central dining hall, outdoor pool, showers, craft building, health center, hiking trails, covered wagons, Adirondacks, and platform tents. Units have latrines and washstands.
Mary Ann Beebe Center
Located between Woodstock and Harvard, MABC has 295 acres of wetland, prairie and woods. There is a small pond with a beautiful suspension bridge, very popular for bridging ceremonies. The lodge is available year-round and the other units are available from April to October. 2
Camping Opportunities Resident (Overnight) Camp is where girls live at camp for sessions ranging from 3 days/2 nights
up to 13 days/12 nights. During their stay, girls live in sleeping cabins, platform tents, Adirondacks, or covered wagons. Girls can attend on their own, with a buddy (current Girl Scout or non-member), or with girls from their troop. There are also family camp sessions for girls and an adult. Resident camp is delivered by seasonal staff. See pages 13–16 for descriptions of our resident camp sessions.
Day Camp offers girls the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors during the day and return home each
evening. However, many day camps offer an overnight option once during the week-long program. GSNI offers two types of Day Camp: • Volunteer-Led Day/Twilight Camps are held at GSNI camp properties, local forest preserves, or other outdoor facilities within the community. Volunteer-led day/twilight camps are facilitated solely by volunteers. Check with your local service unit for more information about volunteer-led day/twilight camping opportunities.
• Council-Run Day Camp is currently offered at Camp Dean and facilitated by the Camp Dean Resident Camp Staff. See pages 17–18 for more information about our council-run day camps.
Troop Camp can happen year round and may be an indoor experience in a “lodge” or an outdoor
experience in a tent-type structure. Troop leaders (or appointed adult) are required to take additional trainings prior to taking the troop camping. Activities during troop camp will depend on the group and location of their camping experience.
Troop Trek is a pre-planned camping opportunity for Girl Scout Brownies and Juniors. Most troops
attending Troop Trek are first-time camping troops. All activities are planned and implemented by a core group of volunteers and program aides. For more information about Troop Trek, see page 18.
Service Unit Camps are often referred to as Camporees or Encampments. These camping
opportunities are planned and implemented by service unit volunteers. Service unit camping opportunities usually last one to two nights. Check with your local service unit for more information about these events. Camping Opportunities

Cool Camp Promo! If at least 50% of the girls in your troop* attend a GSNI resident camp session in the Summer of 2014, your troop will receive one free night of tent camping or half-off one night in a lodge at a GSNI camp during the 2015 membership year (Oct. 2014–Sept. 2015).
4
* Number of girls registered with troop as of June 1, 2014. Example: If you have 12 girls registered in your troop on June 1, 2014, and six of them attend a GSNI resident (overnight) camp session, including family camp sessions but NOT Camp Dean Day Camp, you qualify. If you have three girls who attend two sessions each for a total of six sessions, this does NOT qualify. The count is based on individual girl attendance. The girls do not all need to attend the same session.
W E L C O M E
Dear Campers and Families, I would like to thank you for taking the time to look through all of the great programs we plan to offer this summer at our camps. We have many new programs, as well as a few of the classics. Some of the programs were suggested by past campers because they want to see these sessions at our camps. Camping is a unique experience. We, in Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, believe that by attending a camp, especially one with an overnight stay, a girl will discover new talents and skills that she would not acquire anywhere else. This year, we list a Girl Scout Leadership Outcome for each session. Our plan is to commit to this particular outcome by following through on the Girl Scout Three Processes of girl-led, learning by doing, and cooperative learning. Because of this approach, we hope that by the end of your camper’s session you will see a positive impact on her leadership skills. For more information on the Girl Scout Leadership Outcomes, please refer to Transforming Leadership on our website. As you look through the sessions, please keep in mind that ALL campers will have the opportunity to swim, make something in arts & crafts, cook out, and explore the camp no matter their session topic. Some activities, such as archery, canoeing and kayaking, and crate stacking are only available to specific campers due to safety guidelines. Please understand your camper’s safety is our top priority when making these decisions. I am always available to answer questions about camp. Camp is my favorite place! Please visit our camps before the summer season starts during our Spring Camp Service Days or May Open Houses. I look forward to seeing you at one of our camps real soon! Summer will be here sooner than you think! Happy Camping!

Camp Activities by Grade
During resident and Camp Dean Day Camp, your camper may be able to participate in these activities. We schedule time for every camper to participate in arts & crafts, outdoor cooking, and swimming, no matter the session they are attending. Due to safety guidelines, not all activities are suited for every camper. Also, depending on the group’s interest and time available, your camper may not be able to participate in some of these activities. Activities are listed by grade entering, to correspond to the program listings in the camp booklet. Activities Archery Arts & Crafts Basic Outdoor Skills* Canoeing/Kayaking Crate Stacking

* Basic Outdoor Skills includes: fire building, cooking, hiking, environmental education, dressing for the weather, knife safety, knot tying, and first aid. ** Only available to campers who sign up for programs specifically listing horseback riding as an activity in the camp book.
Activities at all of GSNI’s resident camps include arts, aquatics, archery, games, outdoor skills, team challenges, and many, many more options. The resident program is centered on girl planning. Campers plan their activities and time at camp through individual and small group processes. This method of program allows campers the freedom to choose and express how they spend their time at camp. All GSNI resident camp programs help a girl develop important life skills through fun, exciting and challenging activities.

Camp Information Camp Staff Camp staff is carefully selected from applicants throughout the United States and abroad. All camp staff are at least 18 years of age and chosen for their program skills and experience working with children. All staff participate in an extensive pre-camp training. Staff who supervise aquatic activities have specialized skills and training.
as well as Girl Scouts of the USA policies and standards. All camps meet industry standards for health, safety, site, food service management, human resources, program design and activities. Due to the length of season, GSNI has chosen to have only Camp Dean and Camp McCormick accredited by the American Camp Association.
Campers with Disabilities The goal of our camps is to provide a successful experience for all girls. Parents are requested to communicate with Felecia Dupczak (fdupczak@girlscoutsni.org or Ext. 7161) about campers with any special needs or disabilities. This enables the camp to make every effort to accommodate those needs in their facilities with appropriate staff.
Health centers are staffed by a resident health supervisor. Unit counselors are first-aid/CPR trained. For all camps, emergency care is available at a nearby clinic or hospital. No camper, child or adult, is admitted to camp without the proper health form completed and signed. The proper form and instructions are mailed or emailed in the confirmation packet.
Transportation Transportation to and from camp is NOT included in any camp session. Living in the Out of Doors Campers and staff live in groups called units. This may include platform tents, cabins, Adirondacks, or covered wagons. Staff members will be sleeping in the units in separate accommodations from the girls. Meals are well balanced, nutritious, and served family-style in the dining hall. Girls also have the opportunity to cook some meals outdoors with their unit. Some camp sessions take girls on field trips, visiting attractions in the camp area. Health and Safety All Girl Scout camps in this brochure are licensed by their state and uphold state and federal health and safety codes,
Each camp has procedures in place to monitor and respond to emergencies, including weather conditions, to ensure the health and safety of campers. Details are included in the confirmation packet. Check in/Check out Unless otherwise noted, check in is 2–4 p.m. on the first day of the session, and check out is 2:30–3:30 p.m. on the last day of the session. Visitors We invite camp families to visit during the scheduled Camp Open Houses in May. You will be able to view the facilities and meet the staff. Visitors are welcome only at that time. For safety, access to camp properties is limited when children are present. Once camp is in session, it is important for our girlplanned schedule to run smoothly.
Program Changes Although rare, the Girl Scout council, for a variety of reasons, may occasionally cancel a camp session. If this occurs, you can expect the entire camp fee, including the deposit to be refunded. Other times, certain activities described in the camp brochure must be suspended or changed due to circumstances beyond our control, such as inclement weather, equipment availability, and staffing. In these situations, we try to adapt by offering alternative program options. Under circumstances of this type, refunds should not be expected. Title XX Grant If you receive public aid from the State of Illinois, and/or your child has a medical card from the State of Illinois, you may be eligible for a full scholarship to attend camp. Please be aware that your child is only eligible to receive Title XX funding for attendance at one camp each summer. Sessions qualifying for the Title XX grant have been indicated in the AtA-Glance (page 12) with an [XX] after the session title. This grant is available for limited registrations. Please register as soon as possible. For more information about the grant and/or applying for Title XX, contact Felecia Dupczak at fdupczak@girlscoutsni.org or call 630-897-1565, Ext. 7161 .

Troop Trek 2014 Troop Trek! What is it? Troop Trek is a council-sponsored
troop camping experience designed for Girl Scout Brownie and Junior troops embarking on their first camping adventure; however, many troops have so much fun they come back a second or third time. At Troop Trek, a core staff of program aides and adult volunteers are on hand to assist troops with camping skills and lead a variety of theme-based program activities.
Troop Trek! Who can attend? Different sessions will
serve different age levels, including Girl Scout Brownies and Juniors. All troops/groups must meet Girl Scout recommended girl/adult ratios. At least one of these adults must be a trained leader and have completed Outdoor Overnight Training.
Troop Trek! What is the 2014 theme? This year’s
theme—Animals—will focus on games and activities inspired by animals. Girls will be able to experience a new twist on outdoor skills, common camp activities, and animal care. So round up your troop and grab your sleeping bag because Troop Trek 2014 is where you want to be!
Who: Girl Scout Brownie and Junior troops (see specific
location for assigned levels), limited to girls currently in second through fifth grade. *No first-grade Girl Scout Daisies bridging to Brownies in spring 2014.
Fee: $20 per Girl / $20 per Adult Registration: A registration form can be found on GSNI's website on the Troop Trek page under the Events button. Mailin registration only. Registration form available online and in service centers. See dates below for each specific session. Locations and Dates:

The Volunteer Troop Trek Committee Needs YOUR Help!
Do you like the great outdoors? Does cooking over a campfire equate to a fine dining experience? Do you enjoy working with girls? Is your idea of a 5-star hotel a sleeping bag, tent and the smell of a campfire? Would you like to spend the weekend at one of GSNI’s beautiful camps? If you can answer yes to one or more of these questions, then the Troop Trek Committee is for you! The number of volunteers who step forward will be one of the determining factors that will decide if we can serve the campers registered for each session. So lend a hand and help Troop Trek be a success in 2014! For more information or to join this fun committee, contact Felecia Dupczak at fdupczak@girlscoutsni.org (put TROOP TREK in the subject line of your email) or call 630-897-1565, Ext. 7161.

What is Camp CEO? Camp CEO is a fun, six-day overnight camp that brings together 30 teen girls and 30 of our area’s most accomplished women executives for a unique opportunity to learn what it’s really like to be an executive woman in today’s world. Sitting around the campfire, you’ll discover how these real women started out just like you—a teen girl with dreams, goals and everyday challenges. For part of the time, you will be matched one-on-one with a business woman, and together you’ll experience unique sessions designed to build your leadership and professional skills. You’ll learn how to: •• Network like a pro •• Set professional goals •• Focus on your strengths during an interview Of course, you will participate in all of your favorite camp activities as well: swimming, archery, hiking and more!
