Drop Offs

CAMP LAUGHING sville, PA bert WATERS Gil Camp Laughing Waters features 460 acres of rolling meadows, wide open spaces, a large swimming pool with lights, an athletic field, hiking trails, archery (4th grade and above) and horseback riding. In addition to their chosen program theme, all campers will participate in traditional camp activities (weather permitting) which may include swimming, arts and crafts, cookouts, campfires, hikes, nature activities, singing, and games.

All Programs: Sunday 3–5PM Pick ups Full Week: Friday 3–5PM Half Week*: Tuesday 5–6PM PLEASE NOTE: Pick Up time will be at 1PM for all programs ending on July 4. Early/Late Pick Ups Arrangements must be made prior to drop off for earlier or later pick-ups. Bus transportation Busing is available from select locations. See GSEP website. ACTIVITY PREREQUISITES Swimming: Girls are tested during the first swimming period when they arrive at camp. Please note that participation in some activities requires passing of certain levels. Canoeing: Must have passed American Red Cross level 2 swimming instruction. Horseback Riding: All riders will be assessed during their first trip to the stables. If appropriate level is not reached as needed for certain programs, campers’ activities on the horse may be modified accordingly.

$330 Whether you are looking to try camp for the first time or you have already enjoyed time at camp, this is the week for you! You will swim, make crafts, play games, have a cookout, and go for a hike. Campers will spend four nights in a cabin and one night in a tent (weather permitting). Brownies, earn your Hiker Badge.

The Mane Event June 22–27, August 3–8 (Cabins Both sessions) $330 Have you always wondered what it would be like to be around horses? Have you always wanted to braid a horse’s mane or to learn about how they are fed? In this program you will get to spend time taking care of the horses while learning about what it takes to take care of a horse! You will also get a special “barn breakfast or lunch” with the horseback riding staff as well the opportunity to create special pony treats! You will even experience a pony ride!

Splash Stars June 29 – July 4, July 27 – August 1 (Cabins both sessions) $330 Come splash around at this watery fun week at camp. Enjoy extra pool time with a floating lunch and a night swim. Jam to the beat at a sprinkler dance party and enjoy other water-based activities. Brownies, earn your Fair Play Badge.

Hang out with friends at a pool party, paint your nails, play games in a cabin, make slumber party crafts and enjoy special late night snacks. Brownies, earn your Girl Scout Way Badge.

Where The Wild Things Are July 6–11 (Cabins)

$330 Let the wild rumpus begin! Explore all things wild at camp by exploring camp trails, identifying the different insects that make their home at CLW, enjoying a breakfast with the horses, and playing wild games. Brownies, earn your Bugs Badge.

Let’s Try Camp! July 6–8, July 20–22 (½ Weeks) (Cabins both sessions) $170 In this program designed especially for first time campers (but open to everyone), campers will get to sample a bit of everything camp has to offer! During their time at camp, campers will get a chance to swim in the pool, play an activity on the sports field, attend a campfire, take home an art project, and even get to see the horses! Brownies, earn your Making Friends Badge.

Snackin’ Around July 13–18 (Cabins) $330 This week is all about everyone’s favorite time of the day — snacks! While we normally don’t encourage you to play with your food, this week is all about just that! You will taste yummy treats, get a chance to meet with the camp chef, and even create your very own snack to take home! Brownies, earn your Snacks Badge.

Pixie Power July 20–25 (Cabins) $330 Camp is full of fairies that want to share their magic with you! Discover the world of the wood fairies and their other magical friends while enjoying magical crafts, games, and adventures! Let your imagination run wild as you find out what makes Camp Laughing Waters so magical!

Which day do you want to explore the Yellow Trail? Which game do you want to play on the sports field? Do you want to have a picnic lunch or dinner? Come to this week of camp and help to answer these questions alongside your new friends!

June 22–27 (Cabins) $330 Come turn camp into one big game! Work with your unit as you make a game out of almost everything that you do! Use chalk to make sidewalk games, play new and old favorites on the sports field, and make a splash in the pool! At night you will get to play board games in your cabin and work to create a new game to teach family and friends back home!

Do you want to participate in a night swim? Come help design your ultimate camp week!

$360 In this program, campers get to enjoy the best of camp and the outdoors! Do you want to explore the great outdoors and not be relegated to a set schedule while at camp? Is one night of cookout not enough? If so, this program is for you! You will get to hike and picnic in both Green Lane Park and Valley Forge National Parks. On the days when you are not out exploring local parks, you will be eating at least one meal out of the dining hall each day (this may include an extra cookout, a floating lunch at the pool or even a picnic out over the bridge) and spending one night out under the stars.

$450 Are you up for a bit of out of camp fun while still experiencing activities at camp? If so, come be part of this program where almost every day includes an out of camp adventure! You will visit an amusement park, get lost in a maze, play a round of mini-golf, and enjoy the day hiking in a park! Don’t worry, you will also have time to enjoy lots of activities at camp as well.

On Your Mark… July 13–18 (Tents) $330 Ready, aim… shoot away! Are you new to archery but have always wanted to try it? Have you done archery before but are you looking to spend more time at the range sharpening your skills? Either way this week is for you as you will learn and then build on the basics every day (weather permitting) with both traditional and wacky archery shoots.

Broadway Bound July 20 – August 1 (2 Weeks) (Cabins) $670 In this two-week program, you will put your acting, writing and public speaking skills to the test as you take turns making camp announcements, enjoying improv games, and helping to write the end of session camp play, which you’ll also have a chance to act in! Ultimate Equine Experience July 20 – August 1 (2 Weeks) (Tents) $770 This program is designed for campers who are looking to experience more time at the barn. Campers in this program will get plenty of time riding horses as well as taking care of them. You will even venture out of camp to see a horse show with some of the barn staff! * Prerequisite: Campers must be an intermediate or advanced rider to attend this program.

In this program, you will sample the various types of parks in the area-from enjoying a picnic in Green Lane Park to viewing history at Valley Forge Park, to creating a splash at a water park and then enjoying the rides at an amusement park! You will even have time to enjoy your favorite camp activities right in our own 500 acre “park” backyard!

Yes, She Can! July 27 – August 1 (Tents) $330 There is nothing quite like building or fixing something yourself. Come apprentice with a camp ranger this week and learn new skills you can use for a lifetime. You will use both hand and electric tools, understand how plumbing systems work, investigate electricity, and even build your own toolbox to take home. Cadettes, earn your Woodworker Badge.

Fashion Sense July 27 – August 1 (Cabins) $330 This week is all about fashion! You and your fellow campers will work as designers reformatting old clothes that you bring with you into new and exciting designs! You will also help to create costumes for the end of session play.

All About Horses Too! August 3–8 (Tents) Cost $380 This program has been created for campers who have already experienced All About Horses! and are looking to enhance their skills. During this week, you

Cost $370 Show off your running, biking, and swimming skills as you log your miles doing each one! Swim laps, ride your bike, and go for a run within the beautiful grounds of camp and out of camp as well! The culminating experience will be a bike ride from camp to Valley Forge National Park with an overnight stop to swim and enjoy Valley Forge Day Camp. The next day explore Valley Forge National Park by foot and return to camp. Campers must bring their own bike and be comfortable riding on uneven/rugged terrain.

Entering grades 10–12 Country Roads

$500 Become a Counselor in Training! Learn about leadership, safety, risk management, camp management, childcare, and much more during the first two weeks. During the second two weeks participate in an internship where you will be able to use your skills as a “counselor” for younger girls. Applicants must demonstrate maturity, commitment, and leadership, and work well with others. CITS also enjoy traditional camp activities during their stay. Upon successful completion of this program, girls will earn their CIT Pin.

Camp Laughing Waters is beautiful and so is the area around us. Check out the local culture as we venture out nearly every day (or night) on a new adventure! Activities (weather permitting) include splashing at Dutch Springs, hiking at Green Lane Park, enjoying a picnic and historic sites at Valley Forge National Park, playing mini-golf , sampling local food, and more. You will also experience a lot of your favorite camp activities and help to plan an all-camp activity for the rest of camp!

If you have already completed CIT I and are looking for more specialized training, come be a part of CIT–II. *Prerequisite: Must have completed CIT I and obtain permission from the Camp Director. Applicants must also interview for their chosen specialized area and can choose from Horseback Riding, Waterfront (must be a certified lifeguard), or Arts and Crafts.

Horseback Riding: This program is designed for the experienced rider with at least four years of extensive horse experience. Training includes shadowing members of the riding staff and observing from behind the scenes. In addition to this, you will learn advanced horse and stable management skills, herd care, and horse psychology; you’ll also discover techniques for teaching and supervising horseback riding students, as well as learning equine medical emergency skills. Once this is all completed, you will put your newly acquired skills to practice. Arts & Crafts: These programs are designed for girls who are experienced in different types of arts activities (i.e. drawing, painting, ceramics, some kind of weaving, or knitting). For the first week you will shadow the arts and crafts staff and then for the last two weeks you will work with the girls.

Waterfront: You must be a lifeguard or qualify to take the lifeguard training prior to the start of camp. To qualify for lifeguard training you will be expected to

Mosey Wood is located in the Pocono Mountains on 425 acres and features a beautiful lake. In addition to their chosen theme, all girls experience traditional camp activities including swimming and boating on a daily basis (weather permitting). Other activities include arts & crafts, cookouts, campfires, hikes, nature, science, singing, archery (4th grade and above), climbing wall (6th grade and above), teambuilding activities, and wishing candles. All girls sleep in platform tents.

Backpack Primer July 20–25 $330 Do you have an interest in seeing what it takes to do backpacking trips? Learn the basics of packing, hiking safety, and cooking on the trail. Time to use a GPS to find treasures hidden around Mosey Wood and spend a day out of camp hunting for geocaches around the area. High tech treasure hunting is not all that is offered this week, also navigate around camp using a compass, and there will still be time for traditional camp activities too.

July 20 – August 2 (2 Weeks) $670 Rock climbing and kayaking are the main focus of this program. You will spend time high off the ground while practicing your climbing skills to prepare you for a trip to Ralph Stover for rock face climbing. You will start off in camp practicing your hiking and canoeing skills before you head to the great outdoors to backpack and canoe your way through the wilderness of the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. Entering grades 7-8 Camp Program Aide July 6–18, July 20 – August 1 $370 Are you a returning camper who is looking to become more involved? During these two weeks you will work as a team to design and lead resident camp activities for younger girls. You will explore a number of areas, including camp crafts, games, songs, environmental activities, science and sports. Enjoy theme days and special events, and learn about team building, personal growth and leadership basics.

You will fulfill the GSEP requirements for the Program Leadership Course. Girls will not earn the Program Aid pin but will earn many of requirements; LIA and leadership hours will need to be completed to earn the pin.

Entering grades 10–12 CIT I June 22 – July 18 (Girls go Home the weekend of July 4–6) $500 You will learn about leadership, safety, risk management, general camp management, childcare and much more during the first two weeks of this program. During the second two weeks you will participate in an internship where you will be able to use your skills as a “counselor” for younger girls. Must demonstrate maturity, commitment and leadership potential and be able to work well with others in a positive atmosphere. CITs will also enjoy traditional camp activities during their stay. Upon successful completion of this program girls will earn their CIT I Pin.

Waterfront: You must be a lifeguard or qualify to take the lifeguard training prior to the start of camp (first weekend in June at Mosey Wood) and be a minimum of 16 years old. To qualify to take the test you will be expected to swim 550 yards using the freestyle and breast strokes, retrieve a 10lb block from the bottom of the lake and tread water for 10 minutes with hands out of the water. After successfully completing the Waterfront Lifeguard course you will spend your time reviewing and practicing what your learned in CIT I and continue your internship on the lake at both boating at swimming! Adventure/Teambuilding: This program is designed for girls who are experienced and like the adventure part of camp. Included in this training is how to facilitate the rock wall and ropes course as well as learning how to implement various teambuilding exercises with younger girls. Plan and lead hikes, help teach survival skills, geocaching and more as you work with the staff to provide adventure programs for the younger campers.

Located in Schuylkill County, Camp Wood Haven has 200 beautiful acres of forests, meadows, and protected wetlands. Choose from a great selection of leadership, horse, animal, and trip programs with fun themes to make this your best summer ever. All girls enjoy swimming and age-appropriate activities like archery (4th grade and above), low ropes, climbing wall, teambuilding, arts and crafts, journey activities and more (weather permitting). Girls in grades 6-12 design their own activities in the “Choose Your Own Adventure” program. Campers may live in a tent, Adirondack shelter, or a tree house with beds and mattresses. They will share these shelters with 3-5 other girls.

Bus transportation Busing is available from select locations. See GSEP website. ACTIVITY PREREQUISITES Swimming: Girls are tested on Sunday and put into swim groups based on their abilities. Participation in certain activities requires the appropriate swimming skills. These prerequisites will be noted in the program description. Canoeing, boating, rafting, etc: Must have passed American Red Cross level 2 swimming instruction. Horseback Riding: All riders will be initially placed in riding groups based on their Horseback Riding Questionnaires. If there are questions on a riding level a riding test will be given. Girls are placed into groups based on their abilities. Some riding programs have prerequisites noted in the program description. If appropriate level isn’t reached as needed for certain programs, campers’ activities on the horse may be modified accordingly.

Hiking Through History July 20–25 $420 Enjoy hiking and history as you visit two of Pennsylvania’s national parks. Take a one-day visit to Valley Forge, site of the 1777-1778 winter encampment of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. You’ll then be prepared for your two-night visit to Gettysburg, site of the largest civil war battle. You’ll spend time exploring and hiking the battlefield. Discover the experiences of young women during the three-day siege and take a candlelight ghost tour in one of the most haunted towns in the United States.

You will be paired with another camper to take care of a special horse for the week. Visit a local animal rescue and find out ways that you can help the animals in your neighborhood. You will also learn about animal habitats, and the proper food and care needed for all different kinds of animals.

Explore the mysteries of Gettysburg, site of the largest Civil War battle and one of the most haunted places in the United States. Take the Ghosts of Gettysburg tour — voted the #1 ghost tour in the world — and hunt for local ghosts and paranormal activity in a handson method of ghost investigation. Assist in a ghost hunt, and bring your cameras! During the day, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Gettysburg Visitor Center, tour the battlefield, visit the Jenny Wade House, and more.

Riding Thru History July 27 – August 1 $490 Giddy up! Girls in this program will go to Gettysburg, the site of the largest Civil War battle and one of the most haunted places in the United States. Ride the battlefield, explore historic Gettysburg, and take a candlelight ghost tour! While at camp take part in the riding program, shoot archery, swim and more. There is no riding prerequisite for this program.

Entering Grades 9–12 Bit & Bridle June 29 – July 11 (2 Weeks) $760 During this two-week program, you will have the chance to take a trip out of camp to a horse show or the rodeo. Try your hand at another style of riding and learn more about caring for a horse. Participate in a horse show at camp. Travel north out of camp to Boston to whale watch, sea kayak, visit the New England Aquarium, and spend time at the beach. While you are out of camp you will visit historic Salem and even enjoy a lobster dinner. While in camp enjoy all of the regular camp activities as well as boat at Sweet Arrow Lake. *See swimming prerequisites.

Discover two week’s worth of stuff your history teacher never taught you. Visit weird places like the Mütter Museum, Eastern State Penitentiary, Edgar Allen Poe’s house, Gravity Hill, PA Stonehenge, and even go on a ghost hunt. You can document your weird findings in your own So Weird handbook that you will create and bring with you throughout your weird journeys! End your two weeks with your own “haunted all-camp.” Costumes are encouraged but not a necessity.

Adventure is what you will get with this exciting two-week program. Before you even leave camp for your overnight trip, you will raft the Lehigh River, hike the Appalachian Trail, and explore low ropes, high ropes, and rock climbing. Then when you are ready, travel to Ohio Pyle State Park and whitewater raft, rock climb, and hike. *See swimming prerequisites.

LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS Entering Grades 10–12 CIT-I June 22 – July 18 (Girls go home the weekends of June 27–29 and July 11–13) $500 You will learn about leadership, safety, risk management, general camp management, childcare, and much more during the first two weeks of this program. During the second two weeks, you will participate in an internship, where you will be able to use your skills as a “counselor” for younger girls. Applicants must demonstrate maturity, commitment, leadership potential, and be able to work well with others to create a positive environment. Applicants will be required to fill out a separate application for CIT and provide references and proof of leadership experience. CITs will also enjoy traditional camp activities during their stay. Upon successful completion of this program, girls will earn the CIT I Pin.

Entering grades 7–8 Camp Program Aide July 13–25 $370 Are you a returning camper who is looking to become more involved? During these two weeks, you will work as a team to design and lead resident camp activities for younger girls. You will explore a number of areas, including camp crafts, games, songs, environment and sports. Enjoy theme days and special events, and learn about

teambuilding, personal growth, and leadership basics. You will fulfill the GSEP requirements for Program Aide Leadership Course. Girls will not be able to earn the Program Aide Pin at camp but they will earn many of the requirements.

Entering grades 8–9 Take Charge July 27 – August 8 $370 This program is designed for girls who have taken Camp Program Aide and want to continue their experience – you can even take it more than once! Participants will be required to fill out a separate application, and provide references and proof of successful completion of their Program Aid Pin. During your two weeks at camp, you will fine-tune the skills you learned in your Camp Program Aide training as you continue your work with younger campers and cultivate your leadership skills. In this program, you will be able to choose the areas of camp in which you have a special interest – the barn, the pool, arts & crafts, nature, teambuilding – and spend time learning new skills. *Prerequisite: Successful completion of Camp Program Aide.

Entering Grades 11–12 CIT-II July 20 – August 8 (Girls go home the weekend of July 25–27) $450 If you have already completed CIT-I and are looking for more specialized training, come be a part of CIT-II. Prerequisite: Must have successfully completed CIT and have obtained permission from the Camp Director.

Camp Wood Haven offers specialization in Waterfront, Horseback Riding, Arts & Crafts, and Teambuilding. Waterfront: You must be a lifeguard, or qualify to take the lifeguard training prior to the start of camp. To qualify for lifeguard training you will be expected to swim 550 yards using the freestyle and breast strokes, retrieve a 10 lb brick from the bottom of the lake or pool, and tread water with your hands out of the water for 10 minutes. Horseback Riding: This program is designed for the experienced rider with at least four years of extensive horse experience. Training includes shadowing members of the riding staff and observing from behind the scenes. In addition to this, you will learn advanced horse and stable management skills, herd care, and horse psychology; you’ll also discover techniques for teaching and supervising horseback riding students, as well as learning equine medical emergency skills. Once this is all completed, you will put your newly acquired skills into practice. Teambuilding: This program is designed for girls who are experienced and like the adventure part of camp. Included in this training you will learn how to facilitate teambuilding activities, facilitate the rock wall and ropes courses, as well as learning how to implement various backpacking techniques. Once this is all completed, you will work with younger girls in helping them to experience the thrill of adventure. Arts and Crafts: These programs are designed for girls who are experienced in different types of arts activities i.e. drawing, painting, ceramics, some type of weaving, or knitting. For the first week you will shadow the arts and crafts staff and then for the last two weeks you will work with the girls.

DING RI K C A HORS EB UISITES Q PRERE Keeping girls safe is always our first concern. For horseback riding, all girls are placed in programs based on their ability. Horseback Riding Questionnaires are included with the confirmation packet to help us determine campers’ skill level. All riders are assessed during their first trip to the stables. If the appropriate level is not reached as needed for certain programs, campers’ activities on the horse may be modified accordingly. All riding lessons are weather permitting. We provide girls with approved helmets, but all participants of the Horseback Riding Program must bring appropriate footwear (not flat-soled shoes). Girls without appropriate footwear will not be allowed to ride. Please contact the camp if you need more information. Some programs are geared toward the rider with more experience. Below are the prerequisite levels referred to in the camp program descriptions. Please review before registering. Elementary Riding Level: You should be able to: tack, mount, do a tack check, and adjust stirrups unaided; ride with good position and balance at a walk, trot, or jog. Be able to ride at least twice around the ring without breaking gait at a jog or trot; do simple reverses, circles or patterns at a jog or trot without breaking gait; put horse into a lope or canter and ride at least once around the ring with good seat and control; demonstrate correct jumping posture over poles or low cross rails; and dismount and lead horse away unaided. Intermediate Riding Level: Capable of doing everything at the Elementary level plus: be able to canter demonstrating a simple lead change on a figure 8; execute a halt from any gait and transition from one gait to another smoothly and promptly on command; ride through turns and circles with the horse bending correctly; and demonstrate correct jumping over low single fences. Advanced Riding Level: Capable of doing everything at the Intermediate Level plus: posting trot on the correct diagonal and demonstrate change of direction on the diagonal; be able to pass another rider and handle your horse when being passed; be able to trot over cross rails; and canter over two- foot varied fences. gsep.org • camp guide • spring/summer 2014
