Camp Shelly Ridge will focus on STEM programming, providing thousands of girls with exposure to a wide variety of science, engineering, and environmental subject matter. STEM is a priority focus for Girl Scouts because these academic fields and their corresponding professions are characterized by a particularly wide gender gap, with women occupying approximately 25% of all STEM jobs currently held in the United States. Companies are struggling to find an adequate pool of qualified STEM professionals to meet their needs. With the proper cultivation and training, girls and women can make a tremendous impact to counteract this shortfall and satisfy an important economic need. Research shows that girls who perform well academically do not self-select STEM-related fields. However, interest among girls exists, and must be primed. GSEP’s STEM and environmental programming supports this long-term vision by providing girls with early exposure to relevant disciplines. GSEP’s goal is to empower girls to pursue science, math, and engineering by using an approach that will resonate with them. Camp Shelly Ridge will include programming for younger girls and first-time campers. Given the site’s centralized location, it is a convenient place for parents and caregivers to bring their children to experience camp for the first time. Camp Shelly Ridge’s proximity to Philadelphia provides a unique opportunity for urban girls to take advantage of Girl Scout outdoor leadership programming.
