Get Started Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania is proud to offer a variety of programs and activities for girls of all ages and interests. These activities enhance the Girl Scout Leadership Experience by offering programs that are girl-led, hands on, and incorporate cooperative learning. This Program Guide features all activities and events organized by Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania through February 2017. On Saturday night, sing songs around the campfire with girls of all ages before falling asleep in a platform tent. You’ll be amazed at what you can do! All troops must bring Safety Activity Checkpoints adults. Individual girls must be accompanied by an adult. All adults must be registered Girl Scouts and have a satisfactory background clearance to participate in the program. *Includes four hours of activity during the day on Saturday, accommodations in platform tents, and all meals served in the dining hall.

Experience the new and exciting activities at Laughing Waters while the weather is still warm! Try some team building on the lowropes and disc golf courses. Juniors will have fun scaling the new rock wall, while Older Girls can climb to new heights on the high-ropes course. Gather together to relax around the campfire on Saturday night. This is a trooponly event. Troops provide their own food and some of their own activities led by the troop adults. Each troop must come with a Basic Outdoor Skills and First Aid-Certified Adult. Adults must be registered Girl Scouts and have a satisfactory background clearance. *Includes facilitator-led activities on Saturday and accommodations in platform tents or cabins.

Core Camping Over the years, it has been referred to as many things—consultant camping, camping with the experts—but we’re going back to basics and calling it what it is: Core Camping! Troops provide a Basic Outdoor Skills Trained and First Aid Certified Adult, and we provide the facilitators for the activities! The core staff and activity schedule are taken care of, and you provide the rest.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 10AM-3PM Valley Forge Program Center Grades: 2-3 Cost: $20/girl $10/adult Spend the day outdoors! Have fun with friends as you play games, sing songs, and make bird feeders from recycled materials. Learn critical outdoor skills too, like knot tying and fire-building basics. Then enjoy the sweet smell of the campfire while you roast a marshmallow for a tasty s’more. All troops must bring Safety Activity Checkpoints adults. Sundae Sunday SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2-5PM Camp Laughing Waters, Gilbertsville Grades: 6-12 Cost: $15/girl Calling all girls who want to create GSEP’s Halloween extravaganza for younger Girl Scouts! Come to this planning event for Autumn Adventures and Spooky Waters, where you’ll learn details about your volunteer role and help prepare for the big day. Volunteer roles include sing-along, face painting, group guides, arts and crafts, games, dance party, and designing and performing spooky skits. You’ll earn Service to Girl Scouting hours and enjoy some tasty ice cream, too! Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors interested in helping to plan and run Autumn Adventures/Spooky Waters must register for and attend Sundae Sunday. Girls must be able to attend the Autumn Adventures/ Spooky Waters event, held October 22. Individual girls must come with registered Safety Activity Checkpoints adults. Adults will be asked to participate in facilitation of the programs. *Includes ice cream at planning meeting, as well as dinner and event patch at Autumn Adventures/Spooky Waters.

Tree-tastic MONDAY, OCTOBER 3, 6:30-9PM Angelica Creek Park, Reading Grades: 6-8 Cost: $5/girl Take a hike around Angelica Park and explore the many trees that call the park home. Become an arborist-in-training as you plant saplings, learn about their care and upkeep, and get creative by painting a tree on canvas. All troops must bring Safety Activity Checkpoints adults. Individual girls must be accompanied by a registered adult. *Includes Trees badge.
Fun in the Fall

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 5PM – SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9, 11AM Camp Laughing Waters, Gilbertsville Grades: 4-12 Cost: $45/girl $15/adult What better to way to enjoy the crisp autumn air and changing leaves than a weekend at camp! We’ve planned teambuilding exercises under the trees and on the low-ropes course. Juniors will have the opportunity to scale the new rock wall, while Older Girls soar to new heights on the high-ropes course. Afterward, we’ll warm ourselves around the campfire and relax under the night sky. This is a troop-only event. Troops provide their own food and some of their own activities led by the troop adults. Each troop must come with a Basic Outdoor Skills and First Aid certified adult. Adults must be registered Girl Scouts and have a satisfactory background clearance. *Includes facilitator-led activities on Saturday and accommodations in platform tents or cabins.

Enjoy hanging out with horses, the beautiful fall weather, and camping in platform tents overnight! Girls will ride, learn how to take care of a horse, and play horse games. All riding activities will take place weather permitting. No prior riding experience necessary, just a willingness to have fun! After a day with the horses, enjoy evening camp activities, including a campfire. All troops must bring Safety Activity Checkpoints adults. Individual girls may attend without an adult. All adults must be registered Girl Scouts and have a satisfactory background clearance to participate in the program. *Includes accommodations in platform tents, all meals served in the dining hall, and Horse badge.

Learn tips on shooting style and form, and work to improve your aim. Play different archery games while you learn basic archery safety rules, and etiquette. Come to camp and share your love of horses with younger Girl Scouts! Help teach Brownies and Juniors grooming, horse games, tacking, and more. You’ll even take a brief ride on Sunday morning before we start our afternoon program. To attend this weekend and help with the programs, you must have a basic knowledge of horses, grooming, and tack. All troops must bring Safety Activity Checkpoints adults. Individual girls may attend without an adult. All adults must be registered Girl Scouts and have a satisfactory background clearance to participate in the program. *Includes accommodations in platform tents and all meals served in the dining hall.
Bike & Boat SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8, 10AM-2PM Sand Island to Canal Park along the D&L Trail, Bethlehem Grades: 6-12 Cost: $33/person Join the Wildlands Conservancy’s team of naturalists and explore the Lehigh River on both bicycles and canoes. You will be biking one direction and canoeing back the other. Gain a unique perspective of the Lehigh River, the diverse ecosystem that depends on it, and the fascinating history that surrounds it. Bikes and canoes are provided for you. All troops must bring Safety Activity Checkpoints adults. Individual girls must be accompanied by a registered adult. Bring a bagged lunch to enjoy along your journey. Program will run rain or shine, except during a thunderstorm.
Camp Valley Forge Turns 10! SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9, 10AM-4PM Valley Forge Program Center Grades: All Ages Cost: $20/person Valley Forge Program Center is turning 10! Come celebrate with games, GaGa, archery (grades 2+), and other fun Girl Scout activities. All are welcome—day and troop campers, alumni, and former staff. We’ll even have a campfire for songs and birthday s’mores! All troops must bring Safety Activity Checkpoints adults. Individual girls must be accompanied by a registered adult. *Includes lunch, snack, and Anniversary patch.
Movie Magic SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9, 9:30AM-12:30PM Snapology of Reading 220 N. Park Road, Bldg #5, Wyomissing Grades: 2-5 Cost: $15/girl Movie magic – it just doesn’t happen without a plan! Learn the basics of film special effects by using the Magic Tree House book series as your inspiration. Discover the “story” behind movie scripts and begin the basics of storyboarding. You’ll work in teams to make the stories and characters come to life as you create your own stop-animation video. All troops must bring Safety Activity Checkpoints adults. Individual girls must be accompanied by a registered adult. *Includes admission to the Discovery Center and event patch.

Bethlehem Cost: $8/girl Spend the afternoon with the sisters of Kappa Delta as you learn about girls in other countries. Create your own Japanese origami, participate in Indian dancing known as leela, and snack on cuisines from various countries. All troops must bring Safety Activity Checkpoints adults. Individual girls must be accompanied by a registered adult. *Includes International Girls Day patch and completes requirements from the New Cuisines badge.
Be Brave FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 7PM – SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16, 11AM Camp Wood Haven, Pine Grove Grades: 4-5 Cost: $60/girl $45/adult This sport of bows and arrows is a blast, so come try your archery skills at Wood Haven! Learn tips on shooting style and form, and work to improve your aim. Play different archery games while you learn basic archery safety rules and etiquette. Not only is Gettysburg the site of the largest Civil War battle and one of the most haunted places in the U.S., but it’s a National Park, too! Sleep over at camp with girls from across the council and spend Saturday in Gettysburg. Visit the home of 20-year-old Jenny Wade, the only civilian killed during the battle. Find out what happened to the Shriver sisters when their family home was taken over by Confederate soldiers, stop by the Visitors’ Center, and tour the battlefield — all while earning your Girl Scout Ranger patch! End your day with the “Ghosts of Gettysburg” candlelight tour, where you’ll learn about (and maybe see or hear!) spirits and other paranormal activity. The bus returns to camp on Saturday night. Effective January 1, 2014, prior to registering for all programs sponsored by GSEP, adults who are interested in attending must have a current membership that exists in the adult’s record in the online registration system. This applies to all of the programs advertised in Spark or via the GSEP website or other communication. Cost of registration is $15 and is in addition to the cost of the program. Adults can register online. • Trips & Overnight Programs: According to Volunteer Essentials, when girls go on trips and overnight programs, the group must have at least two unrelated, registered, cleared, and trained adult volunteers. REGISTRATION DEADLINES Registrations are accepted until the program is full or one week prior to the program date, whichever comes first. Please allow at least four weeks lead time from the program date for processing of paper registration forms. We cannot guarantee paperwork submitted less than four weeks in advance will be processed in time for you to attend the program. CONFIRMATIONS Confirmations with necessary details will be sent to all registrants by email approximately one week prior to the program date. SPACE & ATTENDANCE Program space is limited. Attendance capacity is based on the needs of the program itself and cannot be adjusted due to late registration, transfer requests, troop needs, etc. Program capacity and space availability can be viewed online. TROOP REGISTRATION Only approved 01 troop leaders can register current troop members online using the troop management feature. PAYMENT Payment for all programs is due in full at the time of registration. Space will not be held for any registration forms submitted without the full payment amount that is due. REFUNDS Requests for refunds must be submitted in writing to memberservices@gsep.org at least four weeks in advance of the program date for consideration. Refunds are not issued for “no shows” (registrants who do not attend). Refunds are not issued for cancellations occurring less than four weeks in advance or if numbers are reduced less than four weeks prior to the event. CANCELLATIONS GSEP reserves the right to cancel an event due to insufficient registration, acts of nature, or other reasons beyond our control. In the event a program is canceled, a full refund will be issued. Weather-related cancellations: A GSEP staff member will contact you if a program will be cancelled due to weather. When possible, the event will be rescheduled or a refund issued. For cancellations in advance, email notification will be sent to each registrant For same day cancellations, an attempt will be made to call the phone number available on record. Phone numbers and emails can be updated at any time through the online registration system when you visit your online profile on our website at gsep.org.

Effective January 1, 2014, in addition to becoming a registered adult member of Girl Scouts, any adult who registers for an overnight program with GSEP will have to successfully complete a criminal background check prior to program registration. By logging onto the Become a Volunteer page of gsep.org, the adult will be directed to apply for a criminal background check (CBC). Following successful completion of the CBC, the adult can then register for the program.
