ceo corner This issue of Spark comes at a time of change and transition for Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. Not only are we planning for all of the fun the summer will bring, we’re also saying goodbye to Natalye Paquin, who has served as GSEP’s CEO for the past five years. Natalye played an important role in uniting our Council, planning for sustainability, and leading us to become one of the top ten largest councils in the nation. Natalye has been selected to further the Girl Scout movement on the national level as the newly appointed Chief Transformation Officer (CTO) for Girl Scouts of the USA. While she will be greatly missed at GSEP, Natalye’s appointment is a testament to the strength of our Council, and she’ll be sharing everything she’s learned from you all with our national leadership team. As Acting CEO, I’m excited about the amazing adventures on the horizon and about leading such a phenomal group of girl and adult leaders. As you flip through this issue of Spark, you’ll find all kinds of cool things you can do with Girls Scouts. Travel the world, take a troop trip, try something new at summer camp, or plan a service project that leaves a lasting impact on your community…there’s something for everyone, and it all begins with
cookies! When you participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, you get to choose how to use your proceeds. How awesome is that? Whether you’re a summer camp veteran or a camping newbie, be sure to flip the magazine and check out the Camp Guide to see everything happening at camp this summer. In addition to new adventure elements and travel camp weeks, we’re also opening new indoor activity centers at Laughing Waters and Shelly Ridge and indoor lodges at Shelly Ridge and Mosey Wood. You can be one of the first to use these great new facilities! So read on, get inspired, and make your 2016 plans. With Girl Scouts, anything is possible!
Share Spark with a friend! Go to gsep.org, fill out the form online and we will include her in our mailing list for the next edition.

A day with GSEP’s
National Young Woman of Distinction Last summer, Girl Scouts of the USA announced that Alexa Iannace of Emmaus was selected as a National Young Woman of Distinction in recognition of her Gold Award project, a documentary titled “What You Don’t Know About Child Pornography.” This honor is given each year to ten Girl Scouts whose Gold Award projects demonstrated extraordinary leadership, had a measurable and sustainable impact, and addressed a local challenge related to a national and/or global issue. As a National Young Woman of Distinction, Alexa was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from Kappa Delta sorority in addition to a $5,000 scholarship from GSUSA. We caught up with Alexa on the campus of American University, where she is currently a freshman studying International Relations, to chat about what this experience has been like for her.
Q.
Tell us about your NYWOD experience. Who have you gotten to meet, what sorts of things have you already done, and what’s coming up? A. The biggest thing so far has been being invited the White House to attend the Champions of Change event with fellow National Young Women of Distinction, Liza Villanueva (2015 NYWOD) and Monique Tinglin (2014 NYWOD). I’ve also been offered a standing invitation for internships with Rep. Charlie Dent’s office and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
I’ve met the CEO of GSUSA, Anna Maria Chávez, and the person who inspired me most, Darragh Friedman, a GSEP alumna and 2013 NYWOD. I’m most excited about the opportunity to continue raising awareness and highlighting the issue of childhood pornography. I’m also looking forward to being able to lean on my fellow honorees and having a community of young women who can inspire each other.
Q.
What do you hope to get out of this experience?
A. I hope that I am an inspiration to other girls. The NYWOD title is a great way for me to be a voice for childhood pornography awareness as an international issue. I hope I can impact the lives of people who work in criminal justice and the victims in a positive way.
Q.
How has achieving your Gold Award and pursuing other Girl Scout leadership experiences prepared you for college?
Q.
What would you say to Girl Scouts thinking of pursuing their Gold Award and other leadership experiences?
A. I would advise every girl to find an issue that makes you angry. Find something that you’re passionate about and if you don’t have one, go talk to people. Find out something that you didn’t know that changes your view of the world and gives you passion to make it a better place. Don’t be afraid to take on projects that seem too big. We must be the change we wish to see in the world, so go out there and be your own change!
A. Everything I did in Girl Scouts has led me to being here. Girl Scouts has given me confidence as a freshman I don’t think a lot of other students possess. I know how to email and talk to professors with ease. I’m comfortable meeting new people and talking to peers because of Girl Scouts.

See page 11 to hear from girls who attended these events last year.
LET COOKIES BE YOUR TICKET TO TROOP TRAVEL Plan a trip with your troop! Service Unit 521 saved their cookie proceeds for two years in order to travel to Savannah, Georgia – the birthplace of Girl Scouts. While in Savannah, they visited Juliette Gordon Low’s home and historical landmarks like The First African American Baptist Church of Savannah, which slaves built with their bare hands. The girls are already looking forward to reaching another goal so they can go somewhere else next year!

SPACE ACADEMY
BY RACHAEL T. & ZURI C.
rachael’s pov My favorite activity at Space Academy was the Moon Walk Module, which simulated walking on the moon where gravity is one sixth that of Earth. I was jumping more than walking in the model, which was an amazing feeling!
zuri’s pov Most memorable was launching my rocket – instead of taking off, it blew up completely! It was both hilarious and quite frightening! Space Academy was a blast of an experience, and I would totally recommend it for all Girl Scouts, especially those who love adventure and being challenged.
The time I spent at Space Academy surpassed my expectations. My week was filled with team-building activities, such as mission simulations. It’s crucial to communicate and listen to your teammates, just like real astronauts need to do! I learned amazing facts about the history of space exploration in the United States and in other countries. But what I enjoyed the most was meeting Girl Scouts from all around the United States and even some from around the globe! Space Academy was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the time I spent at space camp will stay with me forever.

This summer, we attended the Space Academy Destination at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. Space camp is out of this world! During the week, we completed mock space missions, toured the Space Museum, trained in a large diving tank, and gained and launched model rockets. We met Girl Scouts from across the U.S. and built confidence and leadership skills as we worked together to complete space missions.

We visited the Louvre, the largest museum in the world, and viewed some of the priceless artwork displayed there. Did you know that it would take over three months to see every exhibit inside the Louvre?! We saw many of the historic landmarks and beautiful gardens in Paris, such as Les Invalides, Jardin du Luxembourg, Notre Dame, and of course the Eiffel Tower! We also took a short trip to Versailles where we explored the palace and gardens. After a week of fast-paced sight-seeing, exploring, and education, it was awesome to spend our last day in Disneyland Paris! Our trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will never forget! Bridging to Ambassador A poem by Jessica G., Troop 00026 We’ve gone from blue-aproned Daisies to beanie-wearing Brownies, We’ve earned our flower petals and completed our try-its, We donned our green vests and our beige sashes, We’ve gone camping and flown overseas, We’ve caroled and baked and cleaned, But now we have one final trade, To Girl Scouts a farewell we will bade, We will make one final bridge from Senior to Ambassador. As Girl Scouts we have helped the young and old, Now all that’s left is to earn our Gold. Even though the good times have come to an end, We have made forever friends.

woven placemat These woven placemats are easy to make and they’re not just for your dining table! Use them at your desk or on any surface you want to protect — and pick the magazine pages you like best to make a custom design! SUPPLIES Old Spark Magazines Glue Scissors
INSTRUCTIONS Cut 14 strips, lengthwise, from old magazine pages. We folded each page into 3 equal strips and cut on the folds. Fold the strips in half, again lengthwise, and secure with double sided tape or glue. Line up 7 of the strips and tape them together at the bottom to secure them. Then you can weave in the other 7 strips individually without anything moving out of place. Fold some tape over the edges to finish them and keep everything neat. You can use colored or patterned tape like we did if you want some extra flare! If you want to make your placemat waterproof and longer lasting, brush two coats of Mod Podge over the whole thing. (Let it dry between coats and before you flip to the other side.) You can also use contact sheet paper and stick it to each side, cutting off the excess at the edges.

Highest Awards The Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards are your opportunity to Take Action to make the world a better place and leave a lasting impact in your community! The Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards – the highest honors that a Girl Scout can earn – recognize girls who demonstrate extraordinary leadership by carrying out projects that meet a need in the community. Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania is proud to highlight some of the awe-inspiring Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award projects carried out by Girl Scouts who are making a real difference throughout our council.
100 Years of Extraordinary Projects from Extraordinary Girls! 2016 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Gold Award! Since 1916, Girl Scouts have been making meaningful, sustainable change in their communities and around the world. Previously known as the Golden Eaglet, Curved Bar Award, and First Class, the Girl Scout Gold Award acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. Stay tuned to learn how we’ll be celebrating this very special anniversary throughout the year!

what is the bronze award? The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. As you and your team plan and complete your Take Action project, you’ll develop more confidence, meet new people, and have the kind of fun that happens when you work with other Girl Scouts to make a difference.
Boldly Go for Bronze! 1. Complete a Junior-level Journey. 2. Build your team. You can work with your troop, a small group, or go solo. 3. Explore your community and identify a need. 4. operation grow garden GRACE F., TROOP 7197
what is the silver award? The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. It gives you the chance to show that you are a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated to improving your community.
strive for silver! 1. Complete a Cadette Journey. 2. Identify issues that you care about. 3. Build your team. When first thinking about my Silver Award, I wanted to create a garden that could help improve the community. The garden was a great idea, but how could it become something bigger? I decided to use it to feed hungry people. In my “Operation Grow Garden,” we grew tomatoes, peppers, squash, and zucchini. We also had an herb garden where we planted basil, oregano, thyme, cilantro and dill. I went around to various garden centers and asked for donations. My local Home Depot footed 100% of the bill! I worked with St. Martin’s In the Fields Church in Chestnut Hill to set up a free supper, and created flyers to
distribute to people about the event. On the big day, my team and I got right to work. We prepared several trays of enchiladas, salad, and corn bread. I fed 150 people with food grown in my garden!
4. Explore your community.
I even had enough left over to deliver a bushel of tomatoes to 300 Ministries, an organization that takes care of battered women and their children in Philadelphia. Since then, my contact at St. Martin’s in the Fields decided to bring the “Supper” idea to four or five other Wissahickon Deaneries. She is asking girls to volunteer and help run Supper events at the parishes. My project was a HUGE success!
7. Make a plan and put it in motion.
5. Choose your Silver Award project. 6. Develop your project plan and submit it to the council for feedback.
8. Reflect, share your story, and celebrate.
The deadline for current 8th graders to submit a Silver Award proposal is May 1, 2016. The reflection is due September 30, 2016.

from raptor camp to verano de actividades CAITLIN S., AMBASSADOR, TROOP 1166
My Gold Award journey started in the spring of my sophomore year of high school. I knew that I wanted my Gold Award project to benefit children. As I was looking for ideas, I learned that Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization that conserves and educates about raptors such as hawks, wanted to recreate their Raptor Camp for youth. I immediately began to work with Hawk Mountain, and soon realized that they had no Spanish education materials. I decided to change that. My Gold Award project would be to create a bilingual Raptor Camp. I created five lesson plans, each addressing a different topic, and coordinated with an educator in Mexico to have the lesson plans translated into Spanish. While the lesson plans were being translated, I learned it might be possible for me to take my Raptor Camp to a private
school in Costa Rica. I was excited about the potential global impact! First, I had to implement the Raptor Camp at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. I invited students and trained volunteers to help me with the camp. Twenty different students attended the camp each day, for a total of 80 campers. Each day, I gave a presentation on the day’s raptors. Then there were games and activities, visits from live raptors, presentations by Hawk Mountain’s scientists, and hikes to watch for raptors at Hawk Mountain’s lookouts. While I was leading the Camp at Hawk Mountain, my Costa Rica plans fell through. I was disappointed, but discovered that Hawk Mountain had a sister organization, ProNatura, in Veracruz, Mexico. I contacted ProNatura, and their education specialist, Yumei Cabrera Carrasco, invited me to teach in
the Macuiltepetl Ecological Park in Xalapa, Veracruz. My mother and I travelled to Xalapa for four days in early August. Yumei, who is a former international Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Trainee, and I taught 16 students at the ecological park, using the lesson plans and materials from my Raptor Camp. It was amazing to see how my project had grown into something that impacted people living in a different country. When I returned home, I worked with Hawk Mountain to put all of my Raptor Camp lesson plans and videos onto their website. The materials can now be accessed by other educators and made available to more children, regardless of whether they speak English or Spanish. In addition, I made bins of materials for each day of the Raptor Camp that Hawk Mountain can use in the future. My Gold Award took me to places I never could have imagined and provided experiences that wouldn’t have been possible without Girl Scouts. For any girl out there who is considering a Gold Award, I encourage you to go for it. You never know where it might take you!

project monarch health and habitat BY ELIZABETH S., TROOP 21119
Did you know that monarch butterflies migrate from the northern United States to Mexico every fall? Fewer and fewer monarchs arrive at their destination each year, and their population is declining at an alarming rate. Aware of this environmental problem, I taught others about ways to help monarch butterflies for my Gold Award project. While there are many causes of monarch butterfly endangerment, I focused on two: the abundance of a harmful monarch butterfly parasite known as ophryocystis elektroscirrha (OE) and the dearth of the milkweed plant, which is the only plant that monarchs lay eggs on. I addressed both of these issues by creating and leading a Community Scientist Program at the Churchville Nature Center, in Churchville, PA, where I was already involved in giving tours at the Butterfly House.
Sixty people attended my program, where I gave a presentation with a question and answer session about monarchs and how the community can help them. All attendees, both children and adults, learned how to safely test monarch butterflies for the OE parasite and viewed the parasites under microscopes.

Earn two Senior or Ambassador Journeys
By testing monarchs for OE and providing our data to university researchers, my team and I participated as Citizen Scientists to help understand the effect of this parasite so that solutions can be found. I also stressed the importance of the milkweed flower for monarchs, and encouraged everyone to plant a butterfly garden to promote a monarch habitat by providing two different types of native milkweed seeds. My Gold Award project required me to step out of my comfort zone many times. I previously felt uncomfortable speaking publicly, but after giving an extended presentation to 60 people, I learned that practice helps me feel much more confident. Now I know that by planning and preparing in advance, I can be comfortable and confident speaking in front of any crowd.
