The Power of Possibilities Dear GSGLA Girl Scouts and Girl Scout Families: I love Girl Scout camp—and it’s not just because of the memories I have as a girl doing things like learning to build a campfire and earning my Outdoor Cooking badge at our very own Camp Osito Rancho. I love Girl Scout camp, because its effects last far longer than the week- or weekend-long sessions themselves. Camp lingers in profound ways. Tackling our ropes course at camps Osito and Lakota inspires girls to face other fears with confidence. Working hard to hit that bullseye in archery at El Ranchito helps girls overcome setbacks while working toward goals. Running for “camp mayor” at Mariposa moves girls to speak up and advocate for their ideas. Building DIY water filters at Marine Landing sparks a new passion for STEAM. Identifying native plants on a hike at La Casita motivates girls to protect our environment. The list goes on…

Girl Scout camp gives girls the power to choose their own paths. Camp Lakota is a historic 57-acre highadventure camp reopening this summer for troop and older girl camping! Set at 5,700 feet in Frazier Park, the camp features cabin villages, and activities include a challenge/ropes course, archery range, zip line, hiking, outdoor cooking, and arts and crafts. See p. 14 for our troop and older girl camping options!

Camp Osito Rancho, our premier Girl Scout outdoor leadership center, is a spectacular 160-acre high-adventure camp located in the San Bernardino Mountains above Big Bear Lake at 7,500 feet. Activities include horseback riding, swimming, archery, team-building, and nature experiences. We also offer zip-lining, hiking, outdoor cooking, canoeing, arts and crafts, as well as challenge and ropes courses. See p. 8 for our five-night overnight camps offered here.

Mariposa is a cozy, park-like property in the foothills of Altadena in the San Gabriel Valley. It includes a large grassy space, a wooded area with a small pond, and a campfire ring with an adjacent amphitheater. See p. 26 for weeklong themed day camps offered here.

Located on Alamitos Bay, Marine Landing is a one-of-a-kind waterfront facility offering a private boating beach, charming boathouse, and beautiful seaside views. Nestled in the foothills of north Claremont, this tranquil five-acre setting is surrounded by 1,600 acres of rolling hills, hiking trails, and bountiful wildlife. Overnight camp, also known as resident or sleep-away camp, is the quintessential summer camp experience!

At GSGLA’s overnight camps, girls get the opportunity to sleep away from home and experience the joy of making new friends and (re)discovering the wonder of the great outdoors—all while launching their independence. Campers can choose from a number of sessions at our beautiful mountain camps, where they’ll learn to step outside of their comfort zone and be rewarded with newfound confidence. It’s a tale of two camps! Camp Lakota is re-opening summer camp sessions for the first time in over a decade, and Camp Osito Rancho has doubled its camp offerings for the new summer camp season! Campers can soar on zip lines, find their balance on ropes courses, and take aim at archery—and that’s just the beginning! At Lakota, all ages—including Daisies— can enjoy overnight troop camping; older girls can enjoy an awesome backpacking adventure. Meanwhile, Osito is offering up daily adventures at Big Bear Lake and a discount for early registration! Take advantage of sessions at both camps!

DAY CAMP 6

OVERNIGHT CAMP This picturesque camp is nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains at 7,500 feet with views of Big Bear Lake and surrounded by tall pines, boulders, and our very own Merriman Meadow.

WEEKLY THEMED PROGRAMS Each program option will be offered during each weekly session of camp. All campers, in addition to their chosen program theme, will enjoy archery, swimming, low ropes, high ropes (for fourth grade and above), and zip line.

Star light, star bright—which activities will you enjoy at Osito tonight? Explore camp by glow stick, flashlight, and moonlight as you swim, climb, and hike even after the sun goes down. After sleeping in, you will also enjoy plenty of activities while the sun is out.

H2OSITO Pack your swimsuits and goggles for a splash-filled week at camp! Canoe on the pond, play water games in and out of the pool, and enjoy popsicles and other summer favorites. Back on land, you will dive into your favorite camp activities.

sito Rancho, our overnight camp located in beautiful Big Bear Lake, offers campers a summer of adventure like no other! With high- and low-ropes challenge courses, a climbing wall and natural rock wall, twin and high zip lines*, gaga pit (a friendly version of dodgeball), archery range, swimming pool, and pond—the options are limitless! Our variety of housing facilities—including cabins with electricity, rustic cabins, and platform tents—help to make each program unique! If you are a camper entering grades 2–8 and looking for more time in the water, more adventures on our challenge course, more time exploring at night, or more time with horses, Osito is the place to be this summer! When you select a program theme, you’ll spend half of the day Mondays–Thursdays enjoying those activities (weather-permitting).

Campers entering grades 9–12 may opt to participate in our popular three-week Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program as well as our new one-week Older Girl Experience (OGE). The OGE combines the fun of taking camp on the road during daily trips to Big Bear Lake and hiking all the beautiful trails that Osito Rancho has to offer. Camp Osito Rancho is proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). Every 3–5 years, the camp goes through an accreditation process with onsite visits to evaluate and verify compliance with a set of national standards established by professionals in the camping industry. This is an action we take voluntarily. The standards establish guidelines for needed policies, procedures, and practices in the administration of key aspects for camp safety management. *Our zip lines have a weight and age limitation. In order to provide the safest and best experience for girls, our twin zip line participants must be entering second grade and above and our high zip line participants must be entering eighth grade and above. All participants must weigh 80–250 lbs.

MISSION COMPLETION! Your mission: Spend a high-adventure week up in the trees! Your challenge: Fly through the air on our twin zip line, race to the top of the climbing wall, and master the high-ropes course. Experience a true taste of adventure and collect a treasure trove of amazing camp stories to share upon your mission completion!

OLDER GIRL EXPERIENCE (OGE): WHAT’SUP SUP OSITO Don’t miss the only camp program with trips out of camp designed specifically for our high school-aged campers! Spend time Monday through Thursday kayaking, boating, and stand-up paddle boarding on Big Bear Lake. Then, lace up your hiking boots and explore some of our newly discovered camp trails.

SADDLE UP** Calling all horse lovers! Saddle up for a week of horsecentered fun! Spend your mornings or afternoons learning horsemanship, riding on exciting trails, and helping to care for our resident horses. You’ll leave camp with an even greater appreciation of our equine friends!

COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING I (CIT I) Discover, connect, and take action as you spend three weeks at camp building your leadership skills! Grow your confidence through team-building, self-discovery, and creating activities that leave a lasting impact with campers. Plus, spend time participating in your favorite camp activities!

COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING II (CIT II) For CITs who have completed two years of CIT I, this threeweek session will focus on a specific program area as you continue to grow your leadership skills. Help create, design, and lead activities in your chosen area of interest.

• Grades 2–3 will spend extra time on a team challenge course (in lieu of the high-ropes course).

**Girls who have registered for our Saddle Up sessions are guaranteed time with the horses daily. Based on time and weather, we do our best to provide non-Saddle Up participants time with the horses.

amp Lakota is back and we cannot wait to welcome you! With new cabin villages and updated facilities, Lakota is just the place for you to unplug, discover your sense of self, and embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Whether you are a first-time cabin camper or a Lakota alumna, Camp Lakota has the perfect session for you! Troops can experience three-day, two-night camping for Daisies (entering 1st grade) through Ambassadors. Girls entering grades 9-12 can have an extended older-girl experience for six days and five nights.

LAKOTA TROOP TREKKERS* (TROOP ONLY) Guided by GSGLA Camp Lakota staff, camp sessions include zip lining, ropes courses, pool fun, archery, and of course Girl Scout favorites: campfire sing-alongs, skits, and s'mores. In addition, troops choose from our engaging 2020 Camp Lakota themes—from a celebration of the history and legacy of our beloved Camp Lakota to a wizarding world that explores the magic of camp! All sessions include a welcome lunch for the first day provided by GSGLA, then you get to put your outdoor cooking skills to the test for the rest of the session! (Mmmm, box oven baked apples...)

EACH SESSION WILL FEATURE: High ropes (Cadettes and up); zip line (Brownies and up), low ropes, pool, archery, theme-specific arts & crafts, evening activities, welcome lunch, campfire songs, skits, and s’mores. Note: A welcome kick-off lunch is included on the first day! Groups are responsible for their own meals and cooking supplies for the rest of the program (two dinners, two breakfasts, and two lunches). Each registered group must include a Camping Skills-trained member and a designated first aider. Housing requests will be considered but are not guaranteed. Adults and Girl Scouts live in separate cabins within the same village. Each participant must bring their own sleeping bag, pillow, and toiletries; we will provide the fun!

LAKOTA: THEN & NOW Celebrate the reopening of Camp Lakota! Help build our time capsule, leave a lasting mark on our mural, and be the first to take a bow during campfire songs and skits! Create new summer camp traditions while honoring the legacy of this beloved camp.

HEALTH FORMS

Every girl who attends overnight camp will receive a commemorative item, camp patch, and any badges earned.

Health history forms are completed through CampDoc.com, a secure, encrypted, and password-protected electronic health record system for camps. Within two weeks of your registration, you will receive a link to set up your account and complete your camper’s health history. Each camper is required to have a physical examination (physician signed) within 12 months of her scheduled camp session. Health forms must be completed one week before the start of your camper’s session. All health forms are submitted/uploaded via CampDoc.com. Campers participating in our equestrian programs (Saddle Up) are scheduled for daily horse time (weather permitting).

TRANSPORTATION (OSITO ONLY) Round-trip bus transportation** is included as part of the cost of each session at Osito. Due to Osito’s mountain roads and remote location, we highly recommend bus transportation. It gives campers an opportunity to meet other girls before they arrive at camp. It also reduces the wear and tear on the camp’s natural environment. Overnight camp buses are chaperoned by camp staff.

Begin your journey as a camp leader while experiencing traditional camp activities. Lay the foundation of leadership through team-building, self-reflection, and identifying areas of personal growth. Leave camp with skills to connect with the world around you and be able to empower younger campers to do the same.

HOW TO APPLY?

Must have completed 2 summers of CIT I Learn how to harness your established camp leadership skills in specific program areas. Utilizing your knowledge, camp resources, and camp staff, design and help to lead activities in the program area of your choice.

STAFF

Must be age 18+ at the start of camp GSGLA summer camp experiences are great resume builders that create memories and friendships you will never forget! Develop your communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills, while being innovative and having fun at camp. Apply at girlscoutsla.org.

You must complete an online application, including one reference form at girlscoutsla.org/summercamp. Once submitted, you will receive follow-up instructions within two weeks, which may include an interview. Camperships (financial aid) are available; see p. 38. Deadline to apply is May 8, 2020.

Transportation method is indicated on your CampDoc forms and once selected, cannot be changed. A $10 late fee will be charged for every 15 minutes after the designated pickup time. Buses are available from GSGLA’s Arcadia, Woodland Hills, Inglewood, and Long Beach service centers. Our BAND app will be our main source of communication on bus days and will be updated with real-time arrival and departure information. A link will be sent to all families prior to the start of their session. Note: Campers at Lakota are responsible for their own transportation to and from camp. **You can also choose to drive your child to and from camp but please note that we cannot accommodate interchanging methods of transportation. If your camper rides the bus to camp, she must ride the bus home from camp. If you drop your camper off at camp, you must pick your camper up at camp. We are unable to make any exceptions.

MEALS Girls are provided three nutritious meals and snacks daily. Special diets can be accommodated, including vegetarian, gluten-free, nut-free, and dairy-free options at each meal (must be noted in CampDoc Form). A camper with food allergies must understand her allergy and know what foods to eat/not eat while at camp. ariposa, located in Altadena, offers unique themed weeks from which girls can choose. Girls participate in new and traditional Girl Scout activities while making new friends, developing self-esteem, and making lasting memories. Every week girls will enjoy our gaga (a kinder, gentler version of dodgeball) court, low-ropes elements, “STEAM lab” science activities, and “kids’ kitchen” cooking activities. The themes for each week provide additional experiences for the campers.

El Ranchito is home to many exciting elements, including an archery range, gaga (a kinder and gentler version of dodge ball) court, low-ropes course, and a 32-foot tall climbing wall. arine Landing is a waterfront camp experience like no other. Located in Long Beach, Marine Landing offers unique programming that focuses on paddle sports, marine science, and Girl Scout traditions. The calm waters of Alamitos Bay offer the perfect location for beginning paddlers to learn new skills and an expansive landscape for expert mariners to seek new challenges. Each themed week includes daily boating and free swim time. MONDAY SWIM EVALUATION Every Monday, girls will go through water safety orientation, including proper boat safety and are required to participate in a swim evaluation. All swimming abilities may participate in all camp programming. Life vests are mandatory while boating and are available for swimming. THE BIG HIKE While we will hike some of the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park trails during regular camp, we often don’t have time to go far from camp. On THE BIG HIKE, we invite girls and one adult family member per girl to join experienced naturalists for a longer “loop” hike (approximately 2 hours, 2–3 miles) away from camp either early before camp or in the evening after camp when temperatures are cooler and more animal sightings could occur.

THE BIG GIVE BACK To celebrate our fifth summer of La Casita Day Camp, we’re giving back to the community that has helped us develop our strong environmental program. Our big service project will extend over several camp sessions, and may involve trail maintenance, plant mapping, development and testing of educational materials, and/or other activities that girls could help with instead of some regularly scheduled camp activities.

Our camp leadership program is a progressive, experiential leadership opportunity. In between assisting younger campers on their own Girl Scout camp experience, you will have time to work toward your own leadership goals as a counselor-in-training (CIT). Camps provide knowledgeable staff and a brand new library of activities modeled after the Girl Scout Leadership Experience for you to “choose your own adventure” and become a leader of courage, confidence, and character.

Occasionally, camp programming may change with little or no notice, due to weather or water closures. During beach closures at Marine Landing, additional land-based programs will be provided. We do not offer refunds for beach or water closures as we still provide quality land-based activities.

DAY CAMP HOURS & EXTENDED CARE Camp hours are 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Before and After Care is available at all day camps, 7–9 a.m. and 4–6 p.m. for $50 per week, except for La Casita. If only a.m. or only p.m. care is needed, the cost is $25 per week. There is no prorated or daily rate. Note: A $10 late fee will be charged every 15 minutes after 6 p.m.

We encourage current Girl Scouts to register online to expedite the registration process before spots sell out! Girls must be registered members for the 2019–20 membership year in order to register for GSGLA camps.

DO I HAVE TO BE A GIRL SCOUT TO ATTEND CAMP? If a camper is not currently a Girl Scout, a one-time $25 annual membership fee will be applied in addition to your total camp fees. As members, girls can participate in an array of council-sponsored programs located across Greater Los Angeles during the current program year, as well as join a troop. Adults attending Lakota Leaders must also be registered.

You’ll need an eBiz account and a credit card to sign up for GSGLA camps (and all GSGLA programs): Simply click on “eBiz” on the top right-hand corner of our homepage and set up your account. Email is the main form of camp communication, so please enter an email address that you actively use, and check your Spam folder regularly. Not a Girl Scout member? Not a problem! You’ll just need to fill out our membership form at girlscoutsla.org using a credit card to purchase a Girl Scout membership ($25 per year). Allow two business days to process, then check your email to find your eBiz login credentials. Registered as a Girl Scout in another council? No worries! Girls who would like to request a “camp buddy” may do so online. Girls must register for the same camp session. While every attempt is made to place girls together, it is not guaranteed. El Ranchito, Marine Landing, Mariposa, La Casita, Camp Lakota, and Camp Osito Rancho allow for deposits. All other camps found in the camp guide require full payment at the time of registration. Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable between camps.

CAMP/PROGRAM CREDIT CARDS Camp/Program Credit Cards can be used to pay for camp sessions in full or in partial payments through paper registration only. They cannot be used to pay for the

Camp fee balances are due four weeks prior to the start of every camp session. Late payments or payments not received will result in a loss of placement in the camp and loss of the deposit. It is the responsibility of the camper’s parent to pay camp fee balances by this deadline. Balance reminders will not be sent. Balances may be checked through your eBiz account. If a registration is submitted after balances are due, payment in full is required. If your camper is dropped from the camp due to balance not being paid by the deadline, and if you still wish for the camper to attend the camp, you will need to pay a new deposit fee along with the remainder of the camp balance. Payment must be in full and space must be available at the camp—no exceptions.

IS FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE? Yes, financial aid “camperships” are available for campers whose family financial circumstances might otherwise prevent them from attending camp. Interested applicants must submit the Campership Application with their Camp Registration Form and family contribution by May 24, 2020. For more details, see p. 38.

WILL MY CAMPER NEED A PHYSICAL EXAMINATION TO ATTEND CAMP? For Osito overnight camp and the Lakota older girl experience, yes. Each camper is required to have a physical examination within 12 months of the starting day of their scheduled camp session. A Health History Form is required for all campers and must be completed no more than two months prior to the camper’s session.

WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS MEDICAL OR SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS WHILE AT CAMP?

REFUND POLICY No refunds and no prorated refunds will be made for campers who arrive late, leave early, attend only part of the camp, or choose not to attend the camp. All deposits for all camps are non-refundable and non-transferrable. Please check school calendars prior to registering your camper to avoid loss of deposit. If your camper is required to attend summer school, please contact registration@ girlscoutsla.org.

Overnight camp has a health supervisor on site, and all camps have first-aid-certified adults on site at all times who administer routine health care and any medications. An emergency contact plan is in place should any medical emergencies occur. Parents are notified as soon as possible in the event of any special medical or emergency situation. If your camper has any special needs (physical, behavioral, etc.), every effort will be made to accommodate her. Please include any past or potential concerns on the Health History Form on CampDoc.com. The camp director will contact you prior to your daughter’s session.

CAN SPECIAL FOODS BE PROVIDED? Most special dietary needs can be met if camp directors are notified in advance. At Osito overnight camp and the Lakota older girl experience, meal options due to medical, religious, or other reasons are available. Please indicate these requirements on your camper’s Health History Form. Vegetarian alternatives are offered at every meal.

CAN MY CAMPER BE IN THE SAME UNIT AS HER FRIEND? Girl Scout camp is a wonderful way to meet new people. A camper may request one “buddy” when registering for camp. Both campers must register for the same program and week at camp. Make sure you and your child’s buddy and her parents are planning this together. Bunk buddy placement is not guaranteed. See “How to Register” on p. 36.

WHO ARE THE CAMP STAFF? Camp staff (paid and volunteer) are enthusiastic, fun, caring, energetic, well-trained, and experienced individuals who are hired based on their ability to work with children in a learning and nurturing environment. All hired staff are required to complete a background check and 10–40 hours of training, depending on their respective position. American Camp Association accreditation for overnight camp requires training for all overnight camp staff on topics including youth supervision, child development, program planning, conflict resolution, first aid, CPR, and additional certification for specialized program delivery. The resident camp ratio of staff to campers in fourth grade and above is 1:8; and, for second and third grade, it’s 1:6 with a ratio of 1:6 for high-adventure programs. The day camp ratio is 1:10 and for aquatic activities, it is 1:8.

WHAT CAMP HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS ARE MAINTAINED? All GSGLA camps meet the health and safety standards and guidelines established by Girl Scouts of the USA and the State of California. Copies of the California Health Department’s inspections are kept on file at council offices.

2020 WORK PARTY WEEKENDS WORK PARTY WEEKENDS AT CAMP OSITO RANCHO GROUPS OR INDIVIDUALS Grades 2–12 and adults (due to nature of work) | $20 per person Session 1 | May 15–17 (opening camp) Session 2 | Sept. 25–27 (winterizing camp) We need your help to OPEN camp in May and WINTERIZE camp in September! This weekend is an annual event of volunteers and staff who come together to take down tents and help to tidy and pack up all areas of camp for the coming winter. Join the Camp Osito Rancho family in giving back all while enjoying the great outdoors. Families, troops, groups, or individuals are welcome to register. Projects vary in their labor-intensiveness, but only enthusiasm is required. Logistics All meals and project supplies provided. Sleep in one of our buildings or tent-camp on site. WORK PARTY WEEKENDS AT LAKOTA GROUPS OR INDIVIDUALS Camp Lakota will host one-day work parties on select Sundays in the spring.
