FIRST LEGO League® – MINDSTORMS® Robotics Ages 9-14

2016 Animal Allies Challenge Animal Allies is all about looking into the eyes of our furry, feathered, and finned friends to find what might be possible when we learn to help each other!! In the 2016 FIRST LEGO League® Challenge, 290,000 children ages 9 to 14 from over 80 countries will explore our animal friends. FIRST LEGO League (FLL®) inspires kids to think like scientists and engineers. During the Animal Allies Challenge, teams will choose and solve a real-world problem in the project portion. They also will build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game. Throughout their experience, teams will operate under FLL’s signature set of Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®.

The GSNENY SWE (Society of Women Engineers) Robots Team will meet weekly for 10-12 weeks for 2 hours on the campus of RPI to be coached by members of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). The team will complete their autonomous robot, work on the missions, and determine the real-world problem they want to solve. Additional team-work may be done outside of the normal meeting hours (at home) to prepare for a local competition in the Capital District Region between the months of December 2016 February 2017. For more information, please contact Linda Stephen, lstephen@gsneny.org. To learn more about FLL CLICK HERE Start Date: Wednesday, September 14, 2016 First meeting at the Albany Service Center; remainder will be held on the campus of RPI. Registrations for this program will be accepted until October 30, 2016. Time: 6–8 p.m. Cost*: $65/Girl Scout member or $75/non-Girl Scout member Minimum: 3 girls Maximum: 10 girls *The fee includes team registration, robotics materials, competition fees, and any other related materials.

Junior FIRST LEGO League® Robotics Daisy/Brownie/Junior Ages 6–9 Animal friends are everywhere!! We will swing like monkeys in the zoo, hop like frogs at the lake, and use our wings like birds to learn about the animal kingdom and all its wonders. What do you think we will learn about our furry, finned, and feathered friends? While exploring this challenge, teams will learn about simple machines as they build a model made of LEGO® elements with a motorized part and learn to present information through a Show Me Poster. Teams of six can be either Troops or individual girls led by experienced team coaches at RPI. If there are Troops or Service Units interested in hosting their own team, please contact Linda Stephen, lstephen@gsneny.org to set-up a meeting. Each team meets weekly for 2 hours, for 8–10 weeks to complete the challenge, which culminates with a Junior FIRST LEGO League (JFLL) Expo in December to show off all their hard work and creativity to others.

A first meeting will be held at the Albany Service Center on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 from 6–8 p.m. with following meetings to be held on the campus of RPI or other determined location based upon the number of teams and coach availability. Cost*: $35/Girl Scout member or $45/non-Girl Scout member *The fee includes all weeks of program, team pass, JFLL Expo fees, and supplies. Girls Running the World Daisy Dash & 5K

We all know Girl Scouts CAN do anything! Can Service Units or Troops team up to help the CANstruction organization, The Food Pantries Organization (serving 56 pantries in the Capital District Region), or perhaps your local food pantry to help address the issue of hunger in a fun community service project? Did you know that after the holidays, local food pantries receive fewer donations to help people throughout the long winter months? Girls ‘CAN DO’ will empower you to make a difference to help people locally.

Join Cornell Cooperative Extension, Albany County’s financial literacy educator, to earn your “Financing My Dreams” badge! What will your career be? What would your dream home look like? What amazing places do you want to see in your travels? Explore these questions to discover what good financial habits you need in order to make your hopes and dreams a reality!

Girls CAN DO

Your challenge is to first hold a food drive collection for canned goods (and maybe even some boxed food goods) to “canstruct” a colossal Girl Scout Cookie-themed construction. Or maybe decide on the specially announced theme from CANstruction and The Food Pantries Organization to be revealed October 18 during the kickoff meeting. After you collect your canned goods during the fall months, then map out and determine what you will construct at regional events on January 14, 2017. The locations will be determined based upon the number of Service Units that choose to participate. In the morning, you and your team will build your construction, and in the afternoon, you’ll be judged by members of the CANstruction and Food Pantries Organization in various categories. We will work to live-stream the event so the judging can be done for all regions on the same date. Stay tuned for more information and register as a Service Unit/Troop for the Girls CAN DO kickoff taking place on October 18, 2016 either in person at the Albany Service Center or virtually through GoTo Meeting.

Be sure to bring your ideas of how much your dream job will pay, and what your dream house and vacations will cost, so we can help you plan your future and earn your badge.
