1920: The Girl Scout Promise

Girl Scout Mission

Girl Scout Law

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

General Information

Tips and FAQs What do we need to know about Girl Scout events?

Do Girl Scout volunteers need to be registered members?

Girl Scout events are designed to help girls at all levels discover new things, connect with other girls, and take action in their communities. The final result…girls gain leadership skills without even knowing it.

Adults volunteering at Girl Scout programs are required to be registered with Girl Scouts of the USA as an adult member. Safety is our number one priority. We can ensure the safety of all Girl Scouts and Girl Scout volunteers only when adults become registered members and complete the required background check.

About our events: • All Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast sponsored events are fun, interactive, held to the highest standards, and developed to meet the needs of all girls. • Events are facilitated by staff, volunteers, community partners, and/or girls. • Girl Scout troops have the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun, engaging, and educational events together. • Girls can also choose to make new friends by attending individually.

Can non-members attend events? There is a non-member option when registering for events. It is intended for girls that want to try out Girl Scouts before joining and for parents attending programs with their child who are not responsible for chaperoning other children. There is an additional $25 fee for girl and adult non-members to attend events (except for family and friend events).

What are the best events to attend?

Financial Assistance

It all starts with the girl.

Financial assistance is available to help members participate in Girl Scout activities. Financial assistance can be considered for one event per season (fall, spring, summer) per girl. To request event Financial Assistance, select the Financial Aid box during online activity registration. A Financial Assistance form will be emailed to the family to complete and submit. Financial assistance is funded by proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Program Activity and gifts to Girl Scouting.

Make sure to include girls in the process. Discuss their personal tastes and preferences, check schedules, and review costs…and then let the girls choose. This is the girl-led process in action. Girls and adults are responsible for sharing their decisions about event choices with parents, ensuring they are informed and can support the decisions.

When does registration close? Our troop/daughter is bridging to the next level. What events should we sign up for? Girls bridging to the next level of Girl Scouting (Daisy to Brownie, for example) in the spring are invited to attend spring events for the grade girls will be entering into the following school year.

When does registration open? Events occurring September through January: Wednesday, September 6 at noon

If space is still available, and unless noted otherwise, on time registration will close one week prior to daytime events and two weeks prior to overnight events. A late fee of $10 per person will be charged if registering late and no registrations will be accepted within two days of an event.

What is the cancellation policy? Check our website and your activity confirmation for our updated cancellation policy. If the event is cancelled by the council, full refunds will be issued.

Events occurring February through May: Wednesday, November 8 at noon

Reminder! Any events published in the 2017 Summer Camps and Events Book are already open for registration.

How do I access the confirmation?

Will girls earn a recognition?

Confirmations are posted two weeks prior to the event or sooner. The adult who registered for the event can view confirmations by going to gswise.org>MY GS>Member Profile>My Activities. In the case of troop registrations, the adult who registered the girl(s) is responsible for sharing the confirmation with all registrants along with any additional information specific to the troop’s coordination of attending the event. The adult who registered can see a list of all registrants by clicking on i in My Activities.

All events are connected to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and many help girls earn a Girl Scout recognition–a badge or Journey award. Look for these listings when you review event descriptions:

Can girls use Program Activity Credits (PACs) to pay for events? Yes! Girls earn PACs by participating in the Fall Nut Sale or Cookie Program. They can be used to pay for all or partial event fees. Register online and pay in full for the activity for the girl who has the PAC. After registering for the event, complete the PAC Redemption Form at gswise.org under Resources. We will then send a reimbursement for the PAC amount.

What is expected of troop leaders and adults who attend? Troop leaders are responsible for obtaining permission slips and for meeting Safety-Wise adult to girl ratios for the event. Attending adults are expected to assist the girls as needed and to ensure appropriate girl behavior.

How many adults can we bring to overnights? Bed space is limited. Troops should only register the required number of adults to meet Safety-Wise standards. Any additional adults wishing to attend should contact customercare@gswise.org a minimum of two weeks prior to the event to check availability.

Earned award—girls will complete all steps needed to earn that badge or award Related award—girls will complete some of the steps to earn that badge or award Journey side trip—girls will complete some of the steps to complete the Journey Your event confirmation will include which steps will be completed during the event. Please note that badges or awards related to, or earned at, events are not distributed at events, unless otherwise noted. You may purchase them at your nearest Service Center after the girls have completed the steps required.

Are Program Aide (PA) opportunities available at events? Yes! Girl Scouts in grades 6-12 are always welcome and encouraged to help lead activities at events for younger Girl Scouts. Events with this symbol, PA , provide a great opportunity for teen Girl Scouts to build their leadership skills by helping at that event. PAs attend events at no charge. To register a PA: • Register for the event online at gswise.org and email customercare@gswise.org to notify the council of your registered events. • For more details on PA opportunities, see p. 42 or go to gswise.org.

Additional needs? We make every effort to meet the needs of all girls, so that everyone can fully participate. Please note any special emotional, learning, physical, or health needs of girls when registering. For specific questions or situations, email customercare@gswise.org or call 800-565-4475.

Journey Jumpstarts

Journey Jumpstarts What is a Journey?

What is a Journey Jumpstart?

Take a moment and think about a favorite memory from a trip you’ve taken–the fun adventures you had with your family or friends, new people that you met or a new food that you enjoyed eating.

For girls

A Journey is a trip that girls take to build their leadership skills. It’s the Girl Scout core leadership program. There are multiple themed Journeys for each level. Girls can choose activities to participate in and earn awards. And, like a trip, each Journey is about the things girls do along the way.

At these events, girls will get a “jumpstart” on their Journey adventure by engaging in various Journey activities. Girls will earn the award(s) noted in the Journey Jumpstart event listing. After the event if girls decide they would like to complete all of the awards, that’s up to them. It’s a girl’s Journey, so she chooses where it will take her. For adults Adults will do activities right from the Journey, make adaptations to activities to meet girls’ interests and take side trips to do completely new activities that are related to themes within the Journeys. Mini adult enrichment sessions will happen during the event that will teach adults how to support girls in their next steps and allow them to network with other volunteers. During the event, all of the activities will be set up as stations. Girls will work as a group to determine which activities to do. Each troop/team is responsible for making sure that all their members are engaged along the way. It’s your Journey so you decide! • Girls pick and choose the activities and work on them together as a troop, supported by the adults attending with them. or • We’ll create teams for girls attending individually. Fee includes the following materials that are distributed at the event: • A Journey book for each girl • Journey awards for each girl

Journey Jumpstart Events Journey Jumpstart event offerings are available for: • Girl Scout Daisies/Brownies see p. 14-15 • Girl Scout Juniors p. 24 • Girl Scout Cadettes p. 32

Girl Scout Gold Award Presentations

Grades 9–12

Grades 9–12

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. By the time you put the final touches on your project, you’ll have solved a community problem—not only in the short term, but for years into the future—and you’ll be eligible for college scholarships. This interactive training is designed to focus on the Gold Award process. This training is required prior to submitting a Gold Award Proposal and prior to starting a Gold Award Project, however, we suggest taking the training after you’ve completed the pre-requisite requirements (completing two Journeys—or—if you have earned your Silver, completing one Journey).

Girls going for the Girl Scout Gold Award must meet with the Girl Scout Highest Award Mentor Committee to give project proposal and final report presentations. A girl cannot start her project until approval is received from the council. For project approval and to schedule a presentation date, submit a Project Proposal via Go Gold Online (girlscouts.org/gogoldonline) 4–6 weeks prior to the preferred pre-scheduled presentation date. The council will then schedule a presentation time. Final reports must be received by February 1, 2018 via Go Gold Online for the project to be recognized at the 2018 Girl Scout Highest Awards Celebration.

Troop Camping Availability Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast (GSWISE) offers a wide variety of sites for your troop camping outing. Troops can pick from seven program properties located in southeastern Wisconsin. We offer a progression of facilities ranging from indoor troop houses with plumbing and furnished kitchens, to rustic cabins, platform tents or primitive camping.

Troop Camping

Reservation Timeframes The site rental period of one night starts at 4:30 p.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. the following day. Any deviation before or after this timeframe will result in additional fees. Troops may rent facilities for day use at half the overnight fee. Day use is defined as five hours or less, and the timeframe must occur between 4:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. the next day. Troops may book day use only rental 60 days in advance. Most program properties are open for troop camping seven days a week. Camp Alice Chester, Camp Winding River, and Camp Silver Brook are closed between Memorial Day and Labor Day. All program properties are closed during gun deer hunting seasons and during council holiday breaks.

Photos and Tours of Program Properties Color pictures and more detailed information are available at gswise.org. If you wish to visit a program property before your rental date, you can schedule an appointment with the site manager. See p. 2 for a list of the program properties and phone numbers.

Requirements for Troop Camping • Overnight troop camping is open to troops at all grade levels. All troop members need to be registered members before participating in camping. • Planning the Overnight Experience training is recommended for troops planning to stay overnight at camp or a Service Center. • Outdoor Skills training is required for troops planning to cook over an outdoor fire. • Up-to-date First Aid and CPR/AED certification must be provided to council for an adult accompanying your troop. • Girl-to-adult ratios outlined in Safety-Wise must be followed. For troop camping, ratios are two adults for every six Girl Scout Daisies, twelve Girl Scout Brownies, sixteen Girl Scout Juniors, twenty Girl Scout Cadettes, or twenty four Girl Scout Seniors or Ambassadors.

Male Volunteers or Chaperones Men are welcome to camp at council program properties. However, necessary arrangements need to be made in advance that include separate sleeping quarters and separate bathrooms. Adult volunteers should inform parents that a male will be going on the camping trip. If the unit will be shared with another troop, make sure they are aware that a male will be coming along.

Did you know? A station wagon was purchased to transport girls to and from Camp Pottawatomie Hills in 1924, in addition, a windshield wiper was purchased in 1925 for the station wagon as a safety measure.
