Who We Are *self-identifying girls Girls For A Change (GFAC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth development organization aimed at empowering self identifying Black girls throughout Central Virginia to visualize their bright futures and potential through discovery, development, innovation, and social change in their communities. Our mission is to prepare Black girls for the world and the world for Black girls.
GFAC programs are designed to provide consistent support to girls, from their youth into their young adulthood, and beyond. Through experiential learning and consistent exposure, we focus on ensuring girls are ahead of the learning curve, breaking cycles and closing the opportunity gaps faced by too many disadvantaged, marginalized or underrepresented girls — specifically Black girls. We want to give every girl* who aspires to get ahead a chance to be seen, heard and celebrated. GFAC programs focus on leadership skills, goal-planning, financial literacy, network building, exposure, community engagement, skillbuilding, sisterhood building, and socio-emotional learning. We also offer a safe space to address issues like institutional racism, sexism, the digital divide, and the glass ceiling, which for many Black girls can be a concrete ceiling. *self-identifying girls

Camp Diva Leadership Academy 2022
Camp Diva Leadership Academy: The best way to spend your summer break! Camp Diva is a full-day, immersive camp that celebrates Black identity and emphasizes culture and values. We aim to build girls’ confidence and self-esteem to find their voices, uncover their sparks, discover their passion, and define their values. Through informative workshops, hands-on activities, peer-to-peer mentoring, and weekly field trips, girls begin to unlock their potential, chart their path forward, and develop their leadership and communication skills. These practices not only facilitate great experiences for our girls, but they also support and foster social-emotional development, enhance their physical ability, promote creativity, and encourage each girl to believe in herself. Every summer, rising 6th-9th-grade girls will explore a vibrant variety of activities that provide opportunities for participants to continue learning, experiencing, exploring, and enjoying their summer break. Along the way, they’ll build new friendships and create lasting memories! Girls are broken up into small groups with an assigned mentor to guide and have one-on-one time with each girl. We work collaboratively with corporations, organizations, colleges, and universities to offer a hands-on experience where girls can learn.
For 20 years, Camp Diva Leadership Academy has been providing Black girls with a positive, stimulating, playful and joyful summer day camp experience where they create wonderful memories and lasting friendships.
“
Parent Testimony Camp Diva provided a variety of experiences that supported my daughter’s social and physical growth in a positive environment in which she had the opportunity to explore, play, learn from adult role models, develop self confidence, use their imagination, and create new friendships. The program stimulates exploration and adventure through individual and group activities while developing insight into cooperation and decision making. The amazing culturally relevant activities, arts & crafts, swimming, games and sports promote an exhilarating summer for each camper. My daughters’ personal, emotional, and physical needs are nurtured by a staff that has a great love of children. This camp will give you the peace of mind that your child is in a caring environment this summer. — Parent

A lot of people get placed in a box and are not encouraged to dream—be a nurse, accountant, teacher—but you really want to support our girls to dream beyond all things, whether it be in the arts, or something that isn’t a traditional job for women, especially Black women. — Parent

OWNING IT 8
Camp Diva Leadership Academy 2022
Our theme for 2022 is "Owning it." We will explore owning your Blackness, your voice, your personality, and your responsibilities. We are excited to see our Middle School girls for another summer of fun and exploration. Empowering rising 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grade Black girls to “own it” means learning to claim responsibility and control. Think of something you own: your clothes, your car, or even your cell phone. When you own something, you take care of it, taking your “Sunday Best” clothes to the cleaners, getting the oil changed regularly, or buying a protective case for your phone. You get the point. When you are proud of an investment you made, you take care of it because it’s a part of you. Black girls need to be ensured and affirmed that they can take ownership of the things in their lives: like their academic success, skill building, network building, or time management. When Black girls know they have ownership of their experiences, they will be more equipped to control the outcome of their success. This summer, we’ll work to lay this foundation so that your daughter knows that if she can dream it, she can OWN it. The magic and power is within her.

Our mission is to Prepare Black girls for the world and the world for Black girls. Our vision is to empower Black girls to visualize their bright futures and potential through discovery, development, innovation, and social change in their communities. We want every girl to be seen, heard and celebrated. Our work is designed to change the trajectory of Black girls’ lives and increase the contribution of Black girls in the 21st century.
When Black girls do not have ownership over their experiences or life, they often feel out of control. Their fear and frustration often results in their not taking responsibility for their actions and blaming others for their situation. This type of behavior limits a person’s ability to grow and learn from his or her successes and failures. Ownership offers the power to make a difference in your life. Camp Diva Leadership Academy provides an opportunity for every girl to recognize and apply the power of owning back in the hands of the girls. We offer a new way of thinking about participants - engaged and co-creating with our girls. Our approach involves participants understanding and investing in their own growth and development. We motivate each girl to take responsibility for their own learning, building independence, critical thinking skills, perseverance, and self-reflective understanding they need to succeed in college, career, and life. 10

Weekly Themes Each week we will lean into what “owning it” means through the lens of different themes/experiences. Here’s a look at our weekly themes for 2022.
A Mind of Your Own
Monday, June 27 - Friday, July 1st Your choice. Your decision. Own it. Today a wide scope of Black girls remain unseen and unvoiced. This week the girls will focus on tools to navigate and overcome the countless barriers experienced by Black girls that may threaten to hinder their aspirations for success. Participants will be nourished and supported to achieve the ability to think, act, or form opinions without outside influence. We want every girl to develop a greater agency to help them make important life decisions and feel less overwhelmed, stuck, and lost.
Collective Ownership
Tuesday, July 5 - Friday, July 8 Camp Closed Monday, July 4th - Mental Health Day Building a strong community starts small and close to home. From the family to a Black girl’s connection to the community, engagements and community organizing can expand her horizons in many ways. GFAC is committed to co-creating with our participants to implement programs that serve them and build their skills and network. During this week, we will spend time seeking input on the expansion of the new space. Girls will be a part of brainstorming sessions to identify needs, as well as possible solutions to meet those needs. In doing so, they will choose colors and learn interior design, architectural concepts, create surveys, and analyze data from the community at large. The redesigning opening of our community space is a big deal for a small organization like Girls For A Change, and we want your daughter to have some ownership over its overall feel as their home away from home. 14

Revealing Your Own Style Personality Monday, July 11- Friday, July 15th
Sharing stories of courage can change the trajectory of Black girls’ lives Black girls’ stories are often left untold. What’s told are usually stereotypes that they are hostile, aggressive, bitter, or just plain angry. These untrue stories work to keep Black girls from realizing their full potential — shaping their Black girl journey and experiences overall. Research shows that social conditioning plays a role from a very early age, and provides clues to overcome it. Advocacy movements are changing harmful norms, but they can’t do it alone. This week we will support our girls in seeking out their own truth. Girls will identify their skills, wins, and give themselves credit for the things they do. Giving space for their stories and experiences to help them own their true self help promote a healthy sense of self worth and self love. Participants will discover that living an authentic life is based on your inner wisdom rather than societal measures or opinions of others.
Owning Up to It
Monday, July 18 - Friday, July 22 Confidence is a great thing, but it is scary to take ownership of mistakes. We know Black girls are better leaders when they can be accountable for their actions with satisfaction, pride, and a sense of strength and accomplishment. Accountability is about taking ownership of results and working to improve future results. The first step is building a culture of accountability and recognizing what we need to uncover the personal beliefs and practices that may be producing undesirable results and create a safe space to address them. Participants will learn how they can create the conditions of accountability to flourish in their relationship with self, family, friends, and within the community.

She Owns It
Monday, July 25th - Friday, July 29 Inspiring Black girls to take their dreams and make them into a reality. The last thing on a teen’s mind is their career path. No teenager wants to stress about college, jobs, and work before the time comes. In fact, the majority of teens prefer to enjoy quality time with friends and family before transitioning into adulthood. At Camp Diva, we offer a fun, no stress environment where teens can learn and explore different careers, including entrepreneurship. This week, we will have a special guest helping our girls develop their products and booths for Market Day.
Annual Market Day - Friday, July 29 Featuring Douriean Fletcher 1:00pm - 4:00 pm
Adornment artist Douriean Fletcher is well known for her beautiful creations that have been featured in major film productions such as Marvel’s Black Panther and Coming 2 America. She will co-create adornments with the girls, teach jewelry-making, and talk to our girls about using your creative gifts to express yourself and change the world. As a professional, world-renowned artisan, she will also offering guidance for setting up their booths and selling their products at our annual Market Day.

Camp Diva Leadership Academy 2022
For so long, Black girls have learned to minimize their presence, in some cases by being seen and not heard in certain rooms and spaces. They learn the “correct” behavior to move through life—from sharing their feelings, expressing their opinions, and making others around them more comfortable. Being treated or perceived as “less than” because of the color of your skin can be stressful and even traumatizing. As we come to the end of our week we want to ensure that every girl has the ability to be her greatest self and ambassador by being playful, bold, honest, and true to themselves without feeling shame or worry.

Our Traditions - 1st Day of Camp
Camp Diva Leadership Academy honors Little Miss Diva Mstadi Smith-Roane of Chesterfield, who entered eternal rest January 25, 2004. MORE THAN A SUMMER CAMP
By joining Camp Diva Leadership Academy, Black girls get access to various resources, programs, opportunities, and community leaders they may not find elsewhere. Not only do they walk away with skills and experiences from the program, but the opportunities to continue to grow with us once they leave our building.
When you join us for Camp Diva, you open the doors to a community who will pour themselves into you for life. All we ask is that you extend trust and stay in it with us. Camp Diva is not a one and done experience, it’s the chan to explore and grow into womanhood with us. Girls For A Change takes a continuum approach to development, which means as she moves through different stages of life, our programs move with her.
That’s why this year we are excited to launch a special program for rising 9t graders as they enter their last year of Camp Diva Leadership Academy and prepare for High School. 22

RISING 9TH
You Got Next Mission In Bloom Program is a final experience as part of the Camp Diva Leadership Academy. Starting high school is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful for students and parents. Camp Diva will be a summer resource to help your daughter start her high school journey! Unfortunately, for many Black girls, 8th grade means much more than the end of middle school. Completing middle school marks the end of their perceived innocence. Along with their other peers who are maturing, Black girls are forced to confront adultification, racism, and a myriad of other additional microaggressive attacks on their body, mind, and spirit. Our rising 9th grade summer experience was created to combat barriers Black girls face in high school. Girls that participate in our Mission in Bloom program will be equipped to and ready to stretch out their wings, gain valuable skills and knowledge, explore new areas of interest with confidence. Did you know that… More students fail 9th grade than any other grade and many of these students ultimately drop out? Camp Diva Leadership Academy rising 9th grade program was created to increase graduation rates, advance opportunities for Black girls as they become closer to making college and career choices, increase pass rates, boost enthusiasm for learning, improve academic skills, enhance self-esteem, develop positive relationships with school, and reduce discipline problems. Through Mission in Bloom, rising 9th graders will get an opportunity to engage in robust programming, experiences, workshops, and curriculum that connects back to high school preparation and the challenges they may encounter.
