Camp Diva Leadership Academy is marking its 20th anniversary this summer! In over two decades of serving Black girls, we have learned a lot. We’ve learned how to listen, how to create safe and brave spaces, and how to support and celebrate girls as they transition into a new school year every summer.
For over 20 years, Girls For A Change’s summer camp has been providing each participant with opportunities to grow, discover themselves, and explore the world around them while connecting, collaborating, and celebrating in a gender-responsive and culturally-affirming community.
Camp Diva is centered on building self-esteem, self-discovery, creating a sense of self-worth, and navigating the transition into womanhood armed with a set of skills. In coming up with our 20 Year Anniversary theme, we asked our staff and participants past and present to share words that encompass what Camp Diva is all about.
TRADITION Beginning with the roots and established practices
LEGACY Building on what has been passed down from previous generations
SISTERHOOD Developing bonds and shared experiences within a community
CONSISTENCY Maintaining steadiness and reliability in actions or attitudes
RESILIENCE Demonstrating strength and the ability to recover from challenges
GROWTH Expanding and advancing in capacity or understanding
PLAYFULNESS Introducing creativity, lightness, and innovation
ADVOCACY Taking action to support or defend a cause
TRANSFORMATION Undergoing a significant change or metamorphosis, influenced by all preceding stages
This sequence builds from the foundation of tradition and legacy, through personal and community development, leading to active engagement and profound change.
Camp Diva: the story behind the name
Camp Diva Leadership Academy is in honor of Diva Mstadi Smith-Roane, who died in a firearm accident at the age of 5. Diva and her mother Clover Smith (who has also passed) were an important part of the community, and Camp Diva would not exist without both of them.
Diva’s mother was a fashionista and passionate about seeing and celebrating the character within each girl. There are a few Camp Diva traditions that came from her. First, the wearing of white at the Closing Ceremony was a request she had of us that we gladly honor every year. To Clover, white means a new beginning. It signifies strength, growth, and awareness. It’s representative of honoring and celebrating girlhood. In addition to the wearing of white, we also honor each participant with their “Diva Attribute,” a name representative of their character.

Are you looking for a unique summer program packed with fun, friends, field trips, learning, and positive social impact? Camp Diva Leadership Academy is where Black girls thrive because they are the focus.
For over 20 years, Girls For A Change’s summer camp has provided each participant with opportunities to grow, discover themselves, and explore the world around them while connecting, collaborating, and celebrating in a gender-responsive and culturally affirming community.
At Camp Diva, we believe in nurturing a sisterhood that empowers every girl to flourish. Through sisterhood, girls find support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. They form bonds that last a lifetime, learning the value of collaboration and collective strength.
Our program is designed to foster growth in every aspect of a girl’s life. Whether it’s personal, academic, or leadership, we provide the tools and resources for girls to reach their full potential and become confident, capable individuals.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY TO OUR APPROACH. We provide a structured environment where girls can thrive, knowing what to expect and having the support they need to succeed. By consistently nurturing their talents and passions, we help girls build a solid foundation for their future endeavors.
RESILIENCE IS A CORE VALUE WE INSTILL IN EVERY GIRL. Life is full of challenges, but we believe that resilience is the key to overcoming obstacles and thriving in the face of adversity. Through workshops, activities, and mentorship, we help girls develop the resilience they need to navigate life’s ups and downs with grace and determination.
ADVOCACY IS AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF OUR PROGRAM. We encourage girls to speak up for themselves and others, advocating for their rights and the rights of those around them. Through advocacy, girls learn to use their voices to create positive change in their communities and beyond.
TRANSFORMATION IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN GIRLS PARTICIPATE IN CAMP DIVA. They come in as eager participants and leave as confident leaders, ready to take on the world. Through transformative experiences and personal growth opportunities, girls emerge from our program empowered to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others.
TRADITION IS SOMETHING WE CHERISH AT CAMP DIVA. We honor the rich history and cultural heritage of Black girls and celebrate the traditions that unite us. Through traditional activities, rituals, and ceremonies, girls connect with their roots and gain a deeper appreciation for who they are and where they come from.
Yes, girls, this is the best way to spend your summer break! Camp Diva is a full-day, immersive camp that celebrates Black identity and emphasizes culture and values. We aim to build girls’ confidence and self-esteem to find their voices, uncover their sparks, discover their passion, and define their values. Through informative workshops, hands-on activities, peer-to-peer mentoring, and weekly field trips, girls begin to unlock their potential, chart their path forward, and develop their leadership and communication skills. These practices not only facilitate great experiences for our girls, but they also support and foster social-emotional development, enhance their physical ability, promote creativity, and encourage each girl to believe in herself.
PLAYFULNESS IS AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO AT CAMP DIVA. We believe in the power of laughter, creativity, and fun to inspire learning and personal development. Through playful activities and experiences, girls explore their interests, express themselves, and discover new passions.

OUR HISTORY OF CAMP DIVA LEADERSHIP
ACADEMY
Camp Diva, founded in 2004 by Angela Patton, began as a transformative response to a tragic event—the accidental death of a young girl named Diva Mstadi Smith-Roane due to a firearm accident in a relative’s home. Moved by this tragedy and driven by the lack of engaging programming for young girls in her community, Patton saw an opportunity to honor Diva’s memory by creating a space where young girls could learn to lead rather than sit on the sidelines.
Patton, noticing the enthusiasm from Black families for a program that catered specifically to their daughters, named the camp after Diva to serve as a beacon of opportunity and leadership for girls in underserved communities. Collaborating with Kamala Benjamin, the Director of Youth Services at Friends Association for Children, they secured funds and launched the camp with twelve girls. This initial cohort marked the beginning of a broader mission to empower young girls.
Gaining national attention in 2007, Camp Diva sponsored a daddydaughter dance at the Richmond Justice Center, allowing girls to spend precious time with their incarcerated fathers. This initiative highlighted the camp’s innovative approach to addressing complex social issues affecting young girls, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. In 2013, Camp Diva expanded its reach by merging with Girls For A Change, a California-based organization led by Whitney Smith, which was engaged in similar work to empower young girls. This merger was a pivotal moment for Patton and the program, as it transitioned to a national platform with Patton as CEO.
Today, Girls For A Change encompasses a variety of initiatives, including Camp Diva Leadership Academy, Girl Action Teams, Girls Who Code RVA, Girl Ambassador Program, and several other programs aimed at transforming mentees into strong, productive young women.
Angela Patton’s commitment to ensuring young girls have “access, access, access” to opportunities that place them ahead of the learning curve continues to drive the organization forward, making significant strides in changing the lives of young girls across the United States.

WHO WE ARE
We are excited and ready to offer your daughter a safe and brave environment where Black girls can enjoy and explore with their peers.
Girls For A Change (GFAC) recognizes the unique challenges faced by Black girls as they navigate adolescence—a critical period of personal and social development. Our programs are specifically designed to build them up, filling gaps in support that they may not find elsewhere. By focusing on empowerment through playful and creative activities, GFAC not only fosters personal growth but also cultivates a brave and safe space for these young women.
The benefits of such an environment are manifold. GFAC serves as a nurturing ground where Black girls can explore and develop their identities in a society that often overlooks their needs. Our camp and programs provide a crucial platform for them to express themselves without fear, fostering resilience and boldness. This is especially vital as they prepare for the upcoming school year and other new experiences, where they will inevitably face both opportunities and obstacles.
“Girls For A Change has been the most impactful program for our daughter. I was searching for a summer program for my rising 7th grader. Upon searching the internet, I found Camp Diva, to my surprise it was geared for exactly what I was looking for. A program for Black girls, specifically geared for middle-school girls. This program filled the gap where most summer programs end. It wasn’t just taking kids on random field trips, these trips were educational and innovative. From guest speakers to hosting Market Day, inspiring my daughter to think out of the box.
In these supportive settings, girls learn to navigate these challenges with confidence. The sense of community and sisterhood at GFAC reinforces their sense of belonging and strength, making them better prepared to take on leadership roles and actively participate in their education and community engagements. This preparation not only boosts their academic and social confidence but also plays a critical role in shaping their future, enabling them to stand firm against adversity and seize opportunities that advance their goals.
Ultimately, GFAC’s commitment to creating empowering spaces helps ensure that each girl not only survives but thrives, equipped with the tools, knowledge, and networks necessary to make significant impacts in their lives and the lives of others. As they transition back to school and continue to face new experiences, the foundation laid by GFAC ensures they are not just participants in their worlds but active, influential creators of their futures.
In 2020, we didn’t know how a summer program would work if we were still shut down. Camp Diva thrived even better, for my then rising high schooler, who was suffering from anxiety, here is where she would pull through. The creative ways to keep her on task and getting prepared for high school, with virtual programming. I can’t thank you all enough for lifting us up. Through Camp Diva and Girls For A Change, my only daughter has become more confident and thriving. This fall she will embark as a college freshman.
Any opportunity I can to promote young girls seeking a summer program, I give the information for Camp Diva. I will always champion this program and spread the word. Looking to serve with you all for years to come.”
– Tanya Evans, GFAC Parent

At Camp Diva Leadership Academy, Black girls gain access to an array of resources, programs, and opportunities that extend far beyond the typical summer camp experience. Here, they connect with community leaders and mentors in an environment that continually fosters growth, long after the summer ends.

Girls For A Change adopts a continuum approach to personal and professional development. This means that as each girl progresses through different life stages, our support evolves to meet her growing needs and aspirations. Reflecting our commitment to ongoing development, we developed a special curriculum specifically for rising 9th graders: Mission In Bloom. This initiative helps them cap off their final year at Camp Diva with all the preparation they need to transition confidently into high school.
By investing in their continuous growth and development, we elevate their current capabilities and empower them to seize future opportunities. Join us at Camp Diva, where we’re dedicated to advancing the opportunities for Black girls and helping them thrive throughout their lives.

July 1–5 Week Two: OUTDOORSY
KINDA GIRLS
During our week of play and imagination outdoors, our goal is to expose Black girls to the wonders of connecting with nature and showcase the outdoors as a healing, safe, and rejuvenating space. It’s often wrongly assumed that Black girls are not passionate leaders in promoting outdoor recreation, and it’s time to change the narrative that Black girls do not belong in outdoor spaces and are not adventurous.
At Camp Diva, you’ll always find Black girls engaging in outdoor fitness activities and practicing mindful breathing amidst the beauty of nature. Nature serves as the primary source of joy, healing, and self-transformation for many girls who have been a part of Camp Diva over the years.
Our focus is on fostering play and enjoying adventurous lifestyles while crushing stigmas that Black girls do not play outdoors. We’ll lead activities that encourage creativity and exploration, empowering girls to develop new skills and embrace the wonders of the natural world. Throughout the week, we’ll provide tools and resources for the girls to create games, engage in playtime, and stimulate their minds as they discover the joys of outdoor activities. Whether exploring the wilderness, relaxing in peaceful surroundings, or simply having a great time outdoors, our camp offers growth, development, and unforgettable experiences.

CONSISTENCY
The Mission In Bloom Program is a final experience as part of the Camp Diva Leadership Academy.
Starting high school is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful for students and parents. Camp Diva will be a summer resource to help your daughter start her high school journey!
Unfortunately, for many Black girls, 8th grade means much more than the end of middle school. Completing middle school marks the end of their perceived innocence. Along with their
peers who are maturing, Black girls are forced to confront adultification, racism, and a myriad of other additional microaggressive attacks on their bodies, minds, and spirits.
Our rising 9th-grade summer experience was created to combat barriers Black girls face in high school. Girls who participate in our Mission in Bloom program will be equipped and ready to stretch out their wings, gain valuable skills and knowledge, and explore new areas of interest with confidence.
22
DID YOU KNOW THAT... More students fail 9th grade than any other grade, and many of these students ultimately drop out.
Camp Diva Leadership Academy’s rising 9th grade program was created to increase graduation rates, advance opportunities for Black girls as they become closer to making college and career choices, increase pass rates, boost enthusiasm for learning, improve academic skills, enhance self-esteem, develop positive relationships with school, and reduce discipline problems.
Through Mission in Bloom, participants get an opportunity to engage in robust programming, experiences, workshops, and curriculum that connects back to high school preparation and the challenges they may encounter.
BENEFITS OF MISSION IN BLOOM
While keeping up with our theme and participating in our traditional camp activities, girls going through our Mission in Bloom will have opportunities and activities specifically for them.
SPECIAL GUEST: Join us from July 22–26 for a week focused on empowerment and advocacy. We are thrilled to have Dr. Lauren Christine Mims, a distinguished assistant professor from NYU’s Steinhardt School of Applied Psychology, leading our sessions. Dr. Mims will use her expertise to inspire participants and share the importance of advocacy, emphasizing the power of using one’s voice and making choices to effect social change.
Throughout the week, Dr. Mims will help participants understand the significance of strong beliefs with the mantra, “If they don’t stand for something, they might fall for anything.” This essential learning will help participants identify their values and leverage them to drive meaningful change in their communities.
Participants will also engage in practical activities, choosing an issue they are passionate about—from dress code reform to tackling climate change. They will develop and execute awareness campaigns in various formats like videos, podcasts, or customized lesson plans. These projects are designed to initiate conversations and encourage action among their peers, equipping our campers to be effective advocates for change.
RESTORE, REBUILD, REVIVE AN OVERNIGHT TRIP AT WINTERGREEN FOR MISSION IN BLOOM –
Monday, July 29th- Wednesday, July 31st, 2024. This trip will cost $150.00 per girl and must be paid by Monday, July 22nd, 2024. This payment can be made on www.myprocare.com. You will need to let us know if your child will be attending and make payment by Monday, July 22, 2024.
EARNING TRANSFERABLE COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS –
High School students are often required to complete community service for special programs or to help them shine on college applications. However, volunteering can be much more than that; it can help girls discover hidden talents that may improve their outlook. Once high school starts, trying to find volunteer hours to boost your college resume while juggling classes, after-school activities or a part-time job can be challenging. Camp Diva Leadership Academy ensures we find time to give back, earn volunteer hours, and enhance our professional, educational, and personal lives. Throughout the summer, we will offer our Mission in Bloom participants volunteer opportunities transferable to community service hours.
GET WORKFORCE READY –
Mission in Bloom participants have the opportunity to learn about and prepare for our Girl Ambassador Program, which prepares girls for the workforce. Throughout the summer, we will also have special guest speakers who will speak to girls about careers, internship opportunities, career skills, and more.

Discovery Through Reading & Journaling at Camp Diva
This summer, Camp Diva combats the summer slide not just with fun but with freedom—freedom of expression, freedom to explore, and the freedom to be. We’re proud to support the critical thinking and open dialogue inspired by books that have been either banned or challenged across the United States. Embracing the power of diverse voices, we stand firm in our belief in the right to read, reflect, and resonate with stories that depict our culture, heritage, and experiences.

Out and About Fridays at Camp Diva!
Every Friday, Camp Diva embarks on exciting field trips that are a core part of the Girls For A Change experience. These adventures allow our campers to step outside the classroom and explore the world in an authentic, engaging setting. By visiting significant cultural, scientific, and recreational sites, our girls see firsthand the relevance of what they learn at camp to the real world around them. These experiences not only enrich and broaden their understanding but also empower them to apply their knowledge to solve real-life problems.
Here’s a peek at some of the amazing destinations we’ll explore this summer:
SCIENCE MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA: Unleash your curiosity in a world of interactive science exhibits and awe-inspiring displays.
NATIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND CULTURE: Journey through the rich tapestry of African American history and culture in an immersive, enlightening setting.
MAYMONT PARK: Connect with nature and discover diverse wildlife and beautiful gardens in this sprawling outdoor oasis.
LAUNCH TRAMPOLINE PARK: Bounce into physics and fun at this high-energy trampoline wonderland.
CHALLENGE DISCOVERY: Tackle obstacle courses and team-building activities that challenge the mind and body.
THE YMCA: Engage in a variety of physical activities that promote health and wellness in a community-focused environment.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. MEMORIAL LIBRARY: Immerse yourself in knowledge and legacy at this beacon of history and education.
BUSBOYS AND POETS: Experience the intersection of food, culture, and social change in this vibrant community gathering space.
Out and About Fridays is where fun meets learning and personal growth. Because at Camp Diva, every destination is a step towards changing the world. More outings will be announced at our orientation.

From co-directors Natalie Rae and Angela Patton (Girl For A Change CEO), Daughters tells the story of four young girls as they prepare for a special Daddy Daughter Dance with their incarcerated fathers, as part of a unique fatherhood program in a Washington, D.C. jail.
For most of the daughters, the dance will be the only time they will be able to touch or hug their fathers during sentences, some of which are as long as 20 years.
STREAMING SOON: The documentary, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival— winning the Audience Award: U.S. Documentary and Festival Favorite Award—has been picked up by Netflix and will launch August 14, 2024.
