BLOOM &
BOUNCE BACK July 5–August 13, 2021
Camp Diva Leadership Academy This year, Girls For A Change is offering six, weekday camps for rising 6th–8th-grade girls focusing on one theme per week, allowing Black girls to participate in educational experiences in an exciting and engaging environment.
With so many things to do, from our cultural-related curriculum not typically offered in school year institutions, created explicitly to uplift Black girls, sharpening their skills and gaining new ones, interactions with amazing guest speakers and summer staff. Additionally, this year, there is an online portal where the participants can access an HBCU college student mentor to gain additional resources and tools during the summer and beyond. Many Black girls have bounced back from a jumbled year and overcome hurdles to finish the year stronger than expected. This summer, Camp Diva will focus on resilience. In simple terms, that means the ability to bounce back when something unexpected or challenging happens in our lives.
This summer, we will be filled with optimism, empathy, creativity, and resilience, focusing on supporting the well-being and wholeness of Black girls while encouraging them to tough things out and try new experiences while having a ball learning and growing together! As a licensed youth-based provider during this crisis, we need to implement best practices for communicating with camp families. We all understand the logistics of getting your girls and themselves ready for camp this summer while also providing emotional support to staff, families, and participants. We also respect that each family adjusts their plans to get ready for camp in a window that continues to get smaller.
So, let’s get it started! Registration for Camp Diva Leadership Academy is now open to rising 6th–8th-grade middle school girls for a six-week camp experience. Girls For A Change’s Camp Diva Leadership Academy is affordable, with scholarships & financial aid available for our full-day, immersive camp that celebrates self-identifying Black girls and cultivates our culture and values. We aim to build each girl’s confidence and self-esteem so that she can find her voice, uncover her spark, discover her passion, and define her value. 2

Enrollment We realize that camp is a BIG investment for your family and that it only gets bigger after your first summer. For some families, the large chunk of change is more than you might be comfortable dropping at one time. That’s why we’re putting a fresh perspective on the payment plan before camp starts. You can spread your payments across as many as two months at no additional cost. As long as you maintain a few milestones along the way, your daughter gets to keep her spot for this summer. However, our 10% sibling discount will still be honored, and we recommend that you apply for financial aid or a full scholarship to help your family with camp expenses. Camp Diva is more than a place where girls are just going to have fun. It’s a place where Black girls imagine a summer where she can have the time of her life and grow as a person in ways that will impact who she is for the rest of her life. Note from Our CEO 2021 Camp Diva Leadership Academy
Let’s face it, it has been an exhausting year for Black people. Especially for our children. The pandemic has exposed systemic inequalities and structural racism. It has taken a disproportionate toll on Black people. From the pandemic disrupting education, lack of social interactions, the police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and now Ma’Khia Bryant; Black teen girls facing racial or gender bias (like Grace, a 15-year-old Black girl who was sentenced to juvenile detention for not completing her online schoolwork during the pandemic), and the invisibility of Black Women and girls in America...
Black girls are exhausted! Here’s what Girls For A Change is doing about it. This year’s Camp Diva will only provide services from rising 6th-8th grade girls to limit group size to seven-twelve (a “pod”) per room or space and preferably stay with their same group for most activities. Camp Diva will help your daughter develop critical life skills, particularly in social relations, empathy and understanding of self and others, and build confidence through social interaction and skill-building. We will work to increase her resilience in the face of setbacks, and help satisfy her need for independence by empowering her to have significant control over her day, all wrapped up in lots and lots of excitement and fun! Although the space has been adjusted this summer, the focus has remained the same. We used the strong foundation developed in our summer programming to adapt to the current situation. Our girls are powerful and resilient. They will continue to drive the change to dismantle racism and oppression. Our future as a country depends on their success. We need to invest in our Black girls growth, leadership, and health — during this pandemic and beyond. The pandemic has exposed systemic inequalities and structural racism, which raises a lot of questions from all youth. Especially Black girls. It has taken a disproportionate toll on Black people and their families. Now, as we plan to reopen, return to school this fall, and hug more family and friends this summer, Camp Diva will provide a wonderful opportunity for Black girls to continue their learning in a fun and creative manner.

What’s happening besides COVID?
When girls enter into Girls For A Change spaces they can count on several things: A strong support system to see their best self
During the 6-week camp, the goal will be to illuminate what it means to be a Black girl in America at the intersections of social justice and activism, storytelling and cultural traditions, STEAM education and leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship, economics and personal finance, food science, and human wellness. Each theme will be interactive, imaginative enrichment programs that do just that. Whether a girl is interested in the arts, cooking, or both, they will have a blast with experiential learning activities that give them the chance to be in a non-traditional classroom setting while still receiving high educational value. They’ll end their summer with friendships and memories of learning and achieving! All of our activities facilitate great experiences, support and foster social-emotional development, enhance physical ability, promote creativity, support Positive Racial Identity Development and encourage every Black girl to take risks and discover herself.

Both the pandemic and the fight against systemic racism motivated me as a parent to have new and uncomfortable conversations with my daughter. I trust Camp Diva and know that they will do their best to help Black girls navigate these uncertain times.” – Parent

IN HOUSE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING WITH EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN Women to Watch Series
A sneak peek at the guest list
This summer, Camp Diva honors Black female champions of diversity, problem-solvers, changemakers, forward-thinkers, and inspiring innovators. Our spotlighted guests will share behind the scenes of their educational achievements, professional lives, political careers, and industry executives. These women will cover leadership topics, including celebrating local women leaders of color, featuring up-andcoming women in the community, delving into opportunities and obstacles to women assuming more leadership roles, and creating a take-away project together. Our participants will meet Black women who create space and art, learn about their process, and why they believe it is important for Black people to be creators. We feature a new creator at the beginning of each week. The girls will listen, learn, and take on a call to action to create various forms of art that express their feelings and experiences during the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. For us, that means to amplify Black girl voices and Black creatives in communities.

FAQs What should I bring to camp? For parents new to day camp, remember to mark everything your child brings to camp with her. Placing camp supplies and personal items in a small backpack will help your child keep everything together and make it easier for her to find what she needs while at camp. Here’s our list of the top things to bring to day camp: 1. Wear comfortable clothing that can get dirty. 2. Wear athletic shoes or sandals (closed-toe preferred to protect your child’s feet while she is playing, gardening, etc.). Wear one pair of shoes and bring the other in case a change of shoes is necessary. 3. Pack a change of clothes, including underwear and socks, if clothes get wet or dirty. 4. Bring a light jacket or sweatshirt for chilly mornings and cool environments outside of our control. 5. Bring a raincoat for rainy days. 6. Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30. 7. Bring a sun hat or baseball cap for the outdoors. 8. Bring an easy-to-hold water bottle with a sip spout. 9. Bring plastic bags for wet or dirty clothes. 10. Bring lunch & drink. 11. Turn in any electronics brought to camp must until pick-up. Can you support less technically savvy applicants? Camp financial aid and scholarships come in many different forms and are offered based on many criteria, making it challenging to understand what you qualify for. To help our parents through the camp financial scholarship application process, we are available to provide a few tips and things you may miss in the fine print!

What documents are required? Each application has requirements, including tax forms to prove income amounts and photocopies of IDs. You can locate the required documents on the application. Some applications will require a reference letter. Are the field trips included? Most field trips are factored in the cost; however, Girls For A Change will notify you two weeks prior if you will need to cover any cost or bring money for shopping or meals. Please set aside a decent amount of time to go through the application. Make sure you have the budget to pay for noncovered costs. Besides the actual cost of camp, are there expenses that come up before I register? We do our best to keep the camp affordable. However, it’s always wise to consider any special clothing or gadgets your daughter will need at camp. It is important to consider these costs when you are creating your budget. Is the camp the right fit for you? Before diving into the camp financial aid process, be sure that the camp is the right fit for your daughter. From location to activities at camp, it is important to find a good fit for your daughter to have the best experience possible.

What should my child wear to camp? We want all participants at Camp Diva to be safe and enjoy time outside, much of which is in full sun. We also want all participants to feel included and respected. Our dress code policy considers sun protection safety and community respect and will apply at all times for participants and staff. Every girl should come to camp expecting to get dirty and choose clothing accordingly. Participants wearing inappropriate articles of clothing may be required to change. Camp Diva Leadership Academy 2021
CAMP DIVA IS AN UNPLUGGED ZONE WITH OUR ELECTRONICS POLICY In a world where children have constant access to electronics and social media, a camp with no electronics, known as “unplugged” camp experiences, is becoming more and more popular. Technology has proven to be a great tool and resource and children have more information at their fingertips than ever before, helping with their education and awareness of the world. Girls For A Change operates under a “strongly encouraged nocell phone” policy at camp. It states, “Participants are strongly encouraged not to bring a cell phone to camp. Additionally, all other electronic devices are banned from camp. Any participants caught violating this policy will have their cell phone/device confiscated until the end of the day at camp and may face immediate expulsion from camp pending on usage of the phone.” Aside from the fact that cell phones are expensive and can get lost, stolen, or damaged, and that the physical camp environment is not kind to such items, there is a fundamental problem with campers having cell phones at camp, and that is trust. You may send a cellphone with your daughter to camp under the terms and conditions outlined in the agreement, including assuming full responsibility and liability of loss or damage and understanding the cost of many of the challenges cell phones bring to youth camps. We will provide short daily supervised device time, usually approximately 15 minutes before bedtime. Device time is solely intended for brief communication. Any other use of a cell phone during this time will lead to device confiscation until the end of camp. We will strictly enforce this policy.
13
Camp Diva Leadership Academy 2021
Participants will turn in electronics every morning. The girls will receive their phones back at 5:30pm or during pick-up time. It’s not just camp that can provide this essential time for kids to take a tech break. Families can support one another by establishing “no tech” times, such as dinner, family hour, or time frames during the weekend. Parents/guardians, perhaps even start by modeling the behavior of limiting your screen use. We need social interaction more than ever now. Cell phones and other electronic devices discourage the positive interactions that are a big part of the camp experience. The “downtimes” at camp are an excellent opportunity for participants to shape the strong bonds that we expect to form. Participants who are “tuned out” are missing out on the sisterhood building. Camp Diva offers our participants a chance to enjoy a simple environment where we value personal interaction, creativity, and communication. We hope you’d agree that less “screen time” is in the best interest of your child.

Week 1: July 5–9
Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday Social Justice and Activism A NEW Generation of Activists
We can express a viewpoint on social media, but that’s different than expressing a viewpoint to decision-makers in person. A lot of people look at teenage girls as having no “credibility.” During these five days, we will focus on ways to create a culture where it’s popular to care and demand change. We will focus on equality for women and girls, highlighting the discriminatory norms and laws they continue to face and how equality is key to creating an inclusive, prosperous, and sustainable world. We will also aim to help Black girls become more comfortable with public speaking or confronting their beliefs through a feminist lens.
Week 2: July 12–16 Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday Storytelling and Cultural Traditions
In many parts of Africa, the village congregates around a central fire to listen to the storyteller. As in other cultures, the role of the storyteller is to entertain and educate. Storytelling has always been a way to transmit culture. Why else would our ancestors gather around a fire to tell stories, to pass down traditions, to impart knowledge to younger generations? Girls For A Change uses storytelling to drive culture change. Black girls have different lived experiences and learn how sharing their stories is a way to teach, communicate, call people to action, and express the sorrows of the most elevating joy. This week, the girls will be introduced to creative ways to help crystallize and shape their stories into powerful communication tools. They will break through emotional walls and reach each other at the levels that can open us up to new ways of thinking, rewire the way we think, and drive us to take action with the power we have to shift mindsets and norms. 14
Camp Diva Leadership Academy 2021
Week 3: July 19–23 Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday STEAM Education and Leadership
We need to encourage girls NOW so that they grow into smart, capable, and driven women who take their rightful place in the world of science, technology, engineering, and math. We cannot expect Black girls to enter fields where they do not see positive role models. Camp Diva provides the skills necessary for our participants to connect with women with traditional STEM degrees. We offer participants ways to close the confidence gap and explore emerging technologies such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, coding, and cybersecurity while leveraging their sparks and skills. With only 2% of STEM jobs held by Black women nationwide, we will discuss the importance of mentoring and retaining Black women interested in the sciences and experiences and preparing them for leadership roles. These resources support equal opportunities to pursue—and thrive in—STEM careers, help narrow the gender pay gap, enhance women’s economic security, ensure a diverse and talented STEM workforce, and prevent biases in these fields and the products and services they produce.
Week 4: July 26–30 Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Investing in Youth as the Future of Innovation and Economic Growth!
The key to creating an entrepreneurial culture is inviting our thriving Richmond-based business community to introduce and mentor Black young women thinkers and provide first-hand knowledge of the principles, values, and benefits of entrepreneurship in the unsure economy we live in today. Entrepreneurship continues to be a bright light on the economic horizon. Girls For A Change believes that youth entrepreneurship education programs for Black girls is critical when it comes to comprehensive economic development plans. This week is geared toward the curiosity and interest of each girl. We will teach them strategies to reach out to experts in the professional field they want to pursue, make a hand-crafted item to sell at Market Day, learn to make financial decisions, and develop life-changing skills. The week will consist of modules and weekly live Q&A sessions. 15
Camp Diva Leadership Academy 2021
Week 5: August 2–6 Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday Economics and Personal Finance
America spends billions of dollars helping our children master reading, writing, and science. And then we send them out into the world lacking the basic skills to prosper basic life skills especially understanding personal finance and economics. This week, the girls will gain financial literacy education. It’s not too early for middle school girls to prepare for the real world and develop positive attitudes towards banking and finance. Our financial guru will provide tools and strategies that girls can use to teach themselves and share with their families. In addition, financial advisors will give the girls a deeper understanding of money management with practical money skills from an award-winning curriculum. Soon our middle school girls will become financially independent, and we drive to make sure she is capable and ready to Spend, Save, Invest, and Give wisely.
Week 6: August 9–13 Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday Food Science and Human Wellness
As girls get older, they start making their own decisions about a lot of things that matter most to them. For example, they may choose their own clothes, music, and friends. At Girls For A Change, we introduce them to the science behind good food and wellness so they may be ready to make decisions about their body and health. It’s essential to guide Black girls toward taking on this responsibility. After all, parents won’t always be around to manage their daughters’ health care. Making healthy decisions about what you eat and drink, how active you are, and how much sleep you get is a great place to start for any teen girl. This week, girls will learn that taking charge of their mind, body, and spirit—overall health care Is Good Medicine!
