THE TAGLINE FOR last year’s Annual Fund campaign was “This is Our School.” As I am ending the “second semester” of my first year at GPS, I truly feel that “This is My School” is a phrase that matches my feelings. As a newcomer, my kaleidoscopic view of GPS is shaped by the talented, hardworking students and faculty I’ve met and observed in the classrooms and in leadership roles; by the fun the school community has competing for black, blue, or white team points in relays or crazy sock day; by the dance, art, and drama I’ve witnessed; by the never-say-die attitude of our state champion soccer team. You are also a part of my perspective. You helped us raise $1 million dollars in the 2013-14 fiscal year, only the second time in the history of the school that this has happened. This accomplishment is the result of many hours of dedicated work from volunteers and staff. Your love for GPS and your willingness to stretch beyond what has been done before was evidenced this year and is appreciated by the Board of Trustees, faculty and staff, and students. As the new Head of School, walking into a highly successful fundraising year has been a blessing, and I want to thank each and every one of you who gave of your valuable time, talents, and treasure. At GPS, there is much energy for and enthusiasm about how we will approach the next 108 years of preparing girls for college, as women of honor and integrity who have a commitment of service to others. The staff and faculty are dedicated servants to this mission and work tirelessly to ensure that every girl is known and loved. GPS girls are our inspiration. While we take this moment to celebrate what has been achieved through the generosity of donors like you, we are reminded of the importance of the Annual Fund in sustaining what we have built to this point in our history, but also how it will propel us into the future. I am inspired every day by the strong programs that help shape our next generation of female leaders. Whether they are a Randy Tucker Fellow conducting research on the Tennessee River or performing in the spring musical, each girl at GPS is unique and can share her voice with the world. It takes all of us to sustain this special environment. The state of GPS is strong, because of our amazing girls, talented teachers, and loyal donors like you. Here’s to the girls!

Gifts of Appreciated Securities
Donating gifts of appreciated securities that have been held for more than one year enables a donor to: avoid all capital gains tax on the appreciated portion of the stock; qualify for tax deduction equal to the stock’s full fair market value; make a larger gift than might be otherwise possible. Matching Gifts
Many corporations offer matching gift programs for their employees’ or their spouses’ gifts to their schools. Most programs match dollar for dollar, but there are some companies that match 2:1 and even 3:1. This is a great opportunity and allows you to be credited with the matching corporate gift. The Bruiser Gift Plan
Several donors already make contributions to GPS through monthly or quarterly credit or electronic bank draft payments. The Bruiser Plan provides a convenient and effortless method for spreading payment of your gift over a year or longer. Some donors, especially young alumnae and leadership donors, have seized the opportunity of the Bruiser Plan and have joined a gift club by paying their pledge throughout the fiscal year. There are many ways to name GPS in your estate which also benefit your personal financial situation. Benefits include making a gift that does not interrupt current cash flow or portfolio, reducing gift and estate taxes, and creating a gift from something other than capital to minimize tax deductions. The Cornerstone Society is comprised of donors who have named GPS in their estate plans through a planned giving vehicle. There are a number of possible avenues to take in making a planned gift to GPS: a Bequest (cash, securities, or real property); Charitable Lead or Charitable Remainder Trust; Gift Annuities; Real Estate, or a Life Insurance Policy. IT IS AN HONOR to be serving in the new role of Director of Development and External Relations for GPS. Growing up in Chattanooga, I had friends from every high school in town, including GPS. It wasn’t until adulthood that I saw a clear commonality among many of the highly successful women in our city – they were GPS alumnae. I now proudly serve with them on nonprofit boards and am fortunate to have many as dear friends. As an employee at GPS, I have the opportunity daily to see how our faculty and staff help develop future leaders by encouraging girls to think critically, express themselves boldly and confidently, and pursue their dreams, while contributing to their communities. I believe that in this way, GPS not only contributes to the future of Chattanooga but to the larger global community. My priority as the Director of Development and External Relations is the exceptional stewardship of your gifts. It is my goal that the development team provides you with a positive, professional, and exemplary donor experience through improved transparency, streamlined office services, and accurate data. We also want to enhance the GPS alumnae experience and make sure they always feel connected and appreciated. You may notice that this Annual Report is arriving later than usual. This is because we are in the process of overhauling our systems and processes. A huge portion of my first year has been spent identifying ways to improve office efficiencies, leverage technology, provide superior customer service, and establish effective reporting mechanisms. The changes and adjustments being made are donor-centric and based on the best practices of thriving independent schools around the country. This type of systems audit takes time, but I believe that the results will make GPS stronger than ever. This is a moment to celebrate what has been achieved through the generosity of donors like you during the 2013-14 fiscal year. As a donor, you send a strong message in support of the work being done by the classroom teachers, staff, and students of GPS. WHETHER THE PHRASE “circle of life” brings to your mind Disney’s The Lion King or is simply a symbolic phrase, it seems to me to represent the joy of giving. You are listed in these pages as a donor to the school because you have a special memory of GPS; either you or someone you love received an education here, and you circled back to support someone else just starting her own education journey. Or you made a gift to GPS because you recognize the important work being done in a setting that can change a girl’s path in life. Or you’ve joined one of the Giving Circles, an alliance of donors that leads by example to invest in the future of GPS. Whatever your reason for supporting this great school and whatever phase of life’s cycle you’re in, as a GPS alumna, I want to thank each and every one of you who played a role in our successful campaign. The moment when I heard that we made our 2013-14 Annual Fund goal of $1 million was one of the most thrilling moments in my association with GPS. This milestone accomplishment serves as an indicator of the success to come and was a nice welcome gift to our new Head of School, Dr. Autumn A. Graves, who was officially installed in August. Whether you wrote a check, made phone calls, hosted a dinner, or just asked your fellow parents/alums to give, thank you for helping us reach our goal. As we approached last year’s Annual Fund campaign, “This is Our School,” we introduced the Parent and Alumnae Giving Circles. The purpose of these circles is to provide a means for donors who are capable of making a significant gift to the Annual Fund over a three-year period. Giving Circle members not only model a commitment to invest in the future of GPS, their gifts helped us in making the million-dollar goal and provide a strong running start to the 2014-15 campaign.
