LIKE THE CLASSES BEFORE THEM, the leaders from the Class of 2020 were charged with selecting a theme for the school year. In choosing a theme, the seniors select a word or phrase that not only represents their class, but also encompasses the entire student body. This year they chose: YOU’RE INVITED. Quite simple at first glance and yet profoundly moving upon deeper contemplation. What better way to communicate to each other the message of belonging at GPS? In other words, students, YOU’RE INVITED—to be yourself, to embrace others for who they are, and to see and know others despite your differences. You’re invited to try new things, make new friends, ask for help, put yourself out there. You’re invited to thrive, to sing, to dance, to love, and to be loved. You’re invited. And, you belong here.

CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES DR. REBECCA E. STIMSON ’73

AS BOARD CHAIR, I GET THE DISTINCT HONOR OF BEING ON THE GPS CAMPUS FOR THE BEST DAYS. During the opening day ceremony, I deliver a message to the girls and watch with joy and enthusiasm as the newest members of the sisterhood, the sixth-graders, walk into Frierson Theatre amid cheers and applause. On Commencement, I’m there to say a few sage words and then watch with pride as our newest alumnae take their first steps away from campus to begin their next academic journeys. I’m also on campus for board meetings, for special announcements, May Day, and for athletic and arts events as I’m able. The campus of GPS is a special place. I have memories of being a student here, of being a parent and watching my daughter experience the same traditions I did. So this year became a year of firsts for me and everyone who loves GPS. We closed campus at the end of the school day on Friday, March 13. And against every hope and expectation, we remained closed for the rest of the 2019-20 school year. We could no longer see the girls walk (or dance or cartwheel) across Smith Courtyard. No games or matches or meets were played. The classrooms sat empty. It could have been a very dark time for us as a school, but our faculty and staff endeavored to ensure that even though 205 Island Avenue was closed, learning and laughing and caring for each other endured. Virtual classrooms helped the girls stay connected to each other and to their teachers. I have no doubt that if there were a tangible way to measure the success of how a school adapts to a pandemic, GPS would stand head and shoulders above the rest. The pride I feel when I walk on campus swelled when I heard stories of teachers working after hours to host trivia night for their girls. They created special dress up days and ‘bring your pet to class’ days just to show they cared. That feeling of connection and the commitment the GPS community has for each other transferred to our giving. Bruiser Bee, our biggest fundraiser for the Impact Fund, was cancelled at the last minute and still went on to raise more money than the year before. (See page 56.) We established a separate fund to address immediate and ongoing needs of our families as well as faculty and staff who were experiencing income instability due to COVID-19. The Bridge Fund (page 46) continues to receive donations from those who care about each GPS girl and her teachers. The generosity of our GPS community in times of need touches something really deep within me. As your board chair, my role is to ensure that the school we all love is here today, tomorrow, and far into the future. When I see firsthand that even a pandemic can’t deter our school from its mission, I am more than proud to play my part in leading the board. I am, and always will be, a GPS Bruiser. Here’s to the GIRLS!

A MESSAGE FROM ALI GANT, CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

THE GIRLS PREPARATORY SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT TEAM works diligently to raise funds for the school, but it is not our sole focus. Much of our time is spent deepening relationships with alumnae, parents, grandparents, and friends. I am incredibly proud of our team that rallied and adapted in a year that went from familiar to quite unpredictable. In the fall and winter of 2019, we traveled to different cities across the nation, including New York City, San Francisco, Nashville, and Birmingham, to visit with alumnae in more intimate settings. Back on campus, we welcomed alumnae 50+ years out at our annual Founders Luncheon. Also impressive were the number of our alumnae who returned to campus to mentor our girls through Lunchtime Learning sessions or special speaking opportunities during IMPACT or a club or class. Nothing inspires a GPS girl more than to hear from a woman who has achieved success after having worn the same dress and black onyx ring. Many of our alumnae have been joining GPSAlumnae.org to learn more about mentoring opportunities. Just as our Alumnae Weekend and annual parent-led fundraiser, Bruiser Bee, were about to kick off, the pandemic hit. We sure missed having everyone on campus, but we held class alumnae reunions via Zoom to keep everyone connected, and our Bruiser Bee auction went virtual to keep our annual Impact Fund on target. In April, GPS launched the Bridge Fund to support families financially affected by COVID-19. Donors like you rallied together to support our students and employees in heartwarming ways—a light in truly a dim moment for our school community. Thank you for making GPS a philanthropic priority throughout the years. We simply could not deliver the excellent education experience that is synonymous with Girls Preparatory School without your support. With deepest appreciation,

Ali Gant Chief Development Officer

FUTURE GENERATIONS of LEADERS

KERRI MARTIN BARTLETT ’75

ne GPS alumna was fortified by self-confidence developed years before at GPS, as she ascended the stairs of the United States’ highest court early in her career. Today, she and her family have founded an endowment to celebrate and recognize talented students’ achievements. BELIEF IN HERSELF

As Kerri Martin Bartlett ’75 walked up the stairs to the iconic Supreme Court building to interview for a coveted clerkship, she gave herself a pep talk: Getting this job may be a long shot, but if I can get it, I know I can do the work. Her belief in herself—and tireless preparation—worked. Bartlett clerked for Supreme Court Justice William H. Rehnquist for a year, where she worked on the most challenging legal issues of the day. “The experience was daunting and exhilarating—and the confidence and competence I felt while working at the Court were years in the making,” Bartlett says. “They extend back to my time at GPS, where my teachers encouraged me to believe in myself and follow my dreams. For me, everything unquestionably started at GPS.”

FURTHERING A LEGACY

Throughout her career Bartlett held a number of supervisory positions in the U.S. Attorney’s Office and later did some law school teaching. Now retired, Bartlett lives in New York City, and she has been excited to be back in touch with the GPS community. After serving on “ I WA N T T O E N S U R E the board of her daughters’ all-girls school in New York, T H AT T H O S E G I R L S Bartlett connected with Maria H AV E T H E S A M E Kain Matthews ’75, a classmate EXPERIENCE I HAD and former associate in the GPS Development Office. Bartlett —T H AT T H E Y F E E L was interested in giving back BOTH CHALLENGED and reconnecting with GPS.

Following her work for the Supreme Court, the University of Virginia Law School graduate worked for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, where she again relied on her self-confidence to get her through many tough moments, including prosecuting the FBI’s Top 10 Most-Wanted Fugitive. “When you’re on the battle line like that, healthy selfconfidence is a job requirement,” Bartlett says. Often the only woman in the courtroom, Bartlett knew she belonged there, in part based on the solid foundation she received at GPS from the time she first walked through the doors as a seventh-grader.

“I realized what an incredibly strong role GPS had played in my life,” Bartlett says. She was ready to continue the school’s legacy. Bartlett joined the Board of Trustees eight years ago, now serving as its secretary, and she’s enjoyed playing a critical role in helping the school address challenges and prepare for its future.

In working with former Head of School Dr. Autumn Graves, BARTLET T ’75 Bartlett was surprised to learn there wasn’t a strong merit-based scholarship program for students. Her husband, who comes from a family of educators, suggested that they contribute some of the family’s resources to start a merit-based scholarship in his wife’s name.

“I’m very pleased to be able to support girls of outstanding academic merit who want to attend GPS,” Bartlett says. “I’m hopeful the fund can grow and that more young women will have the opportunity for a GPS education. And I want to ensure that those girls have the same experience I had—that they feel both challenged and supported. We’re all different and have different goals in life, but what I know is that GPS provides all the tools for making those goals become a reality.” 21

A LIFETIME OF CELEBRATING GPS

REMEMBERING SHARON MILLS ’65

any qualities stand out among GPS alumnae— a strong sense of purpose and community, self-confidence and, oftentimes, lifelong friendships with classmates and other alums. One woman stands out with her ongoing, lifetime support of the school and through her planned gift, contributing to the lasting legacy of an all-girls education at GPS.

Among those age groups include GPS alumnae. As both Frierson and Mills’ brother, Olan Mills II, can attest, Mills’ friends and connections at GPS brought her great joy. Being much younger than her siblings, Sharon Mills found almost a second home at the school, both as a student and lifelong supporter.

Mills chaired and served on numerous GPS Board of Trustees committees, including the Nominating Committee, the Search Committee for Head of School (which led to the hiring of Dr. Autumn A. Graves), and the Long-Range Planning Committee. She also chaired the effort to raise in excess of $110,000 for the formation of Tucker River Fellows to honor former GPS Head of School Randy Tucker, and she chaired the Annual Fund.

While many alumnae continue their support of our school, Sharon Mills ’65, a 1996 Distinguished Alumna, leaves a legacy that will touch the lives of many. Mills, a longtime Chattanooga resident and active civic leader, passed away on May 12, 2020. Over the course of her lifetime, she made significant financial contributions to the school, often anonymously, that supported multiple scholarship endowments and many other campaigns. She was a devoted champion of the school’s commitment to providing the best education for girls.

In addition to her support of her alma mater, Mills was an advocate of the arts. Throughout her lifetime she offered philanthropic support of the Hunter Museum of Art and the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera.

A G AT H E R E R O F F R I E N D S AND GPS ALUMNAE

Friends and family characterize Mills as passionate yet quiet in her support. Friend and former Trustee Joan Frierson ’60 recalls her fondly. While the two didn’t graduate together, they became friends during their involvement with the Board of Trustees at GPS and through the Hunter Museum of American Art. As Frierson says, Mills was a gatherer, opening her home to friends and welcoming groups of people. “Sharon was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known,” Frierson says. “She was fun and so passionate about her interests. She had myriad friends across different spectrums and age groups.”

and traditions and supported other women through their GPS experiences. She served as a Trustee from 1988-91 and again from 2001-07, where she strived to provide insight and influence for GPS’s leaders, and the school honored her with a Distinguished Alumna Award in 1996, commending her dedicated work and support for GPS.

“Sharon had a place in her heart for the advancement of women, and of course she was fortunate to see a lot of that take place in her lifetime,” Olan Mills II says. “She was more interested in GPS than any of her other passions.” “GPS gave her a sense of belonging,” Frierson says. “She was a champion of women, in a deeply supportive way, and she wanted women to have an opportunity to speak, to be heard, and to take a path they wanted to take.” A S TAU N C H S U P P O RT E R OF WOMEN

A champion of women and girls, Mills remained a close ally of the school. She connected deeply with the values

After his sister’s passing, Olan says he began to hear from so many of Sharon’s friends who were connected to her from school. It was a big part of her life, as Olan recalls, and it was her first love. “Sharon was a great sister, a kind and gentle person with a very charitable heart,” Olan Mills II says. “In her lifetime, she may not have liked recognition for her contributions, but I know she would like to be remembered for the way she felt about GPS.” 29

A Foundation of Strong

RELATIONSHIPS K amri Chester Busby ’08 has quite a track record. A former three-sport athlete at GPS, she helped bring home three state titles and was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.

But far beyond her winning record, Busby says the connections and relationships she established at her alma mater brought her back to the school, as a member of both the Alumnae Council and the Impact Fund Leadership Team, Alumnae Division, and a financial contributor. As a multi-sport athlete, Busby competed in softball, volleyball, and basketball, bringing home two state titles in softball and one state title in volleyball in her time before playing collegiate softball at University of Memphis. Now back in Chattanooga where she lives with her husband, Andre, and daughter, Londyn, Busby works 38

as a clinical research associate with IQVIA, a human data science company. Her career allows her to tap into her years of experience working for her mother’s Chattanoogabased medical research organization and as a nurse in area hospitals.

After Busby moved back to Chattanooga, she fi rst reconnected with GPS assisting Susan Crownover coaching the softball team. Then she introduced her daughter to GPS, bringing her to the fall family events and summer camps. She was encouraged to help with a phonathon by Kim Leffew, another of Busby’s former softball coaches and now the Director of the Impact Fund and Alumnae Engagement. “Kim was a huge mentor for me while I was in school—I played for Kim and Coach Crownover—and she served as a bridge for me to stay connected with the school,” Busby says. “GPS provides such strong support and experiences for girls.

Being involved in athletics was a big part of my support system, but I was always amazed at the opportunities at GPS.”

Busby recalls wanting to participate in dance and cheer, too, if she had time, always encouraged by teachers and coaches. The relationships she established in school and on the court and field stand out the most. “The friendships I have are long-lasting and unmatched,” Busby says, and she praises her strong influences from coaches and teachers. Now contributing her time with the Impact Fund and other alumnae events, Busby hears other alumnae share their stories across generations. “Crownover and Leffew didn’t just mold me athletically—they helped me become a better person overall. They helped me understand that while athletics are important, who you are and what you bring to the table makes you stand out the most,” Busby says. “My coaches helped me accept my authenticity and fully accept and be myself. Those characteristics have helped me strive for success and have carried me to where I am now in my life.”

Bryant with her cheer crew; front row, fourth from left.

K

athryn Bryant ’12 recalls her daily round-trip commute to GPS from her home in Dalton, Georgia, first on the bus and then driving herself later in high school. It was where her commitment to her education began— and a journey to a place where she felt fully nurtured and compelled to grow.

K AT H R Y N B R YA N T ’ 1 2

“I never once complained about the drive— I loved GPS so much, and they really prepared me to do whatever I wanted,” Bryant says. “GPS teachers and staff do an incredible job of encouraging everyone, regardless of their academic endeavors or activities. There is no cookiecutter approach. They encouraged me to be myself.” After graduating from GPS, Bryant found her next home at the University of Georgia, where she graduated cum laude with a degree in finance. She worked in investment banking in Atlanta before transitioning to her current job as a financial analyst for Neiman Marcus in Dallas, Texas. Her ability to interpret, plan, and predict the group’s financial future, even in this year’s current economic turmoil, inspires her at work. “I’m able to help every single one of our stores with our planning and forecasting,” Bryant says. In a similar way, Bryant supports causes she cares about, including GPS, so that she can continue a legacy of education.

A REASON TO GIVE Bryant has made her first contribution to the GPS Impact Fund, a fund that provides flexible discretionary resources that have a significant impact on the school’s ability to provide an incredible educational experience to all students.

“GPS continues to have such a big impact on my life, and I want to ensure that others can have the same experience I did,” Bryant says. “GPS offers opportunities beyond a traditional education—art classes, volunteering, Winterim—that’s not typical. I want to ensure other girls can have those same opportunities for years to come.”

Bryant has been able to see the impact of giving back firsthand. Her donation was inspired by the sudden passing of her friends’ and fellow GPS classmates’ mother. In lieu of flowers, their family had asked for contributions to local area organizations their mother was involved in. She immediately thought of GPS, a place they all had in common, as one the institutions she wanted to support. “I think, and most of my classmates would agree, that GPS helped form me into the person who I am today,” Bryant says. “Even a small gift can help create the same educational experience for someone else who is younger than you, and for generations to come.” She applauds the supportive environment GPS provided, not only while she was in school but also through the college application experience and beyond. “The GPS community was so supportive and encouraging after graduation,” Bryant says. “The traditions and values helped define my experience and memories from GPS. The experiences I had there, and the time I had to connect with my peers, are really special.” She encourages alumnae—especially young alums—to consider making a contribution to the school, no matter the amount. 45

Establishing a Bridge Fund to Help Our GPS Community

W

hen our world changed seemingly overnight due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some GPS families were also impacted due to job loss or income reduction. In these uncertain times, our community rose to assist those who struggled financially.

weathered the financial pressures they experienced in their households.

By establishing the GPS Bridge Fund, an emergency tuition assistance fund was set up to provide temporary aid for GPS students. A faculty/staff benevolence fund for GPS employees who are experiencing financial hardship was also established.

The GPS community, spanning generations and geographies, is united in the belief in the power of educating girls to lead lives of integrity and purpose. We now share this common experience of uncertainty and concern. But greater than that are the values that connect us and a belief that we are strengthened by caring for one another and our hope for a better future, one that GPS girls will help create.

Gifts to the GPS Bridge Fund ensured that all GPS girls were able to continue their education alongside their classmates and that our dedicated faculty and staff

We appreciate the generosity of those who gave and continue to give to their neighbors in need during these extraordinary times.

BRUISER BEE

finds VIRTUAL SUCCESS DAYS BEFORE BRUISER BEE | TRIVIA EDITION was to be set up in the GPS main gym, the school campus closed due to the global pandemic. So instead of a trivia contest complete with decor, dinner, and donations, the Bee was canceled while the online auction went on as planned. While not ideal, the virtual event proved to raise even more money for the GPS annual Impact Fund than last year’s Bruiser Bee due to generous donors and ticket holders. Nearly twice as many auction items were donated and won, and virtual paddles were raised to bring in an additional $105,700 for the school’s science program. Huge thanks goes to the more than 50 volunteers who solicited and distributed auction items, planned for the event, and quickly regrouped to make the virtual event a success. Plus we extend our esteemed gratitude to those who supported the event with sponsorships, contributions, and donations. Your generosity will be felt by the GPS community for years to come.

CAT Receives Sizeable Grant Chattanooga As Text: Placemaking Course (CAT) made its debut the summer of 2017. While partnering with missionminded community members, Girls Preparatory School piloted the interdisciplinary, social entrepreneurship program to test curricular and pedagogical innovation and to offer ageappropriate girls in the Chattanooga area the opportunity to dive deeply into a local problem within the context of the geologic, social, and historic setting of the Chattanooga region. Due to the success of CAT, for the students and teachers who participated, and in an effort to revitalize the program and fund it for three installations, GPS applied for a sizeable grant from The Edward E. Ford Foundation. After a rigorous review process, GPS was awarded the 1:2 matching $50,000 grant from The Edward E. Ford Foundation, with the directive to raise the additional $100,000 by December 31, 2019. The GPS Development team successfully raised the required funds from 14 individuals, foundations, and donoradvised funds. This is the fourth grant GPS has been awarded from The Edward E. Ford Foundation. The summer 2020 CAT program, to be held June 8-26, was canceled due to COVID-19. Plans to hold the program summer 2021 are still moving forward. 61

Introducing Our

BRUISER BOOSTERS THE 2019-20 SCHOOL YEAR WAS THE FIRST for the GPS Bruiser Boosters, a booster club designed to support all of our school’s athletic teams. By the end of the spring of 2020, the organization had 50 members and had raised just over $12,500 for GPS Athletics. Comprised of current parents, grandparents, alumnae, and other friends of the school, the GPS Bruiser Boosters made an immediate impact by facilitating the purchase of several new resources for our sports medicine and strength programs, including a portable AED for athletic events and new equipment for the weight room. Unlike other high school booster clubs that may focus on one team at that school, our program benefits all of our girls and makes their experience of participating in athletic activities safer and more enjoyable. We are thankful for the support of all of our Bruiser Boosters members, and we look forward to seeing the club’s continued impact over the years as we strive to offer the very best programming for female athletes in this area. Go Bruisers!

Jay Watts, CMAA Director of Athletics
