BODY MIND LIFE THE SECRET TO FEELING LIGHTER...
...might be to stay away from drama. Research has shown that drama causes stress, anxiety, anger, and is also energy draining. Negativity can put your heart and brain out of sync. Once you learn to not feed in to other people’s drama, you will become free of it. Once you clear your life of drama you will feel lighter.

You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries?
Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise
Does my haughtiness offend you? Don’t you take it awful hard ‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I’ve got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? .

Making History
GIRLS ARE ALWAYS SAYING, ' WE CAN DO ANYTHING THAT BOYS CAN DO. ' BUT BOYS SHOULD BE SAYING, ' WE CAN DO ANYTHING THAT GIRLS CAN DO. ' "
On January 21, women and girls across the globe marched to advocate for legislation and policies regarding human rights and other issues, including women's rights, immigration reform, healthcare reform, gender equality, and more! This marched was planned for Washington, D.C., however, 673 marches took place worldwide, on all seven continents, including 29 in Canada, 20 in Mexico, and one in Antartica in a peaceful manner.
Together we are powerful, you are powerful. Girls have the power to be heard and noticed. We hope this inspires you to stand up for yourself and work to make changes in your own life and your community.

What does your shoes say about you (quite a lot, actually)? Did you know that shoes have powers? We learned at a young age from the Wizard of Oz and Cinderella that the right pair of shoes can change a girl's world. Not only do your go-to-shoes represent who you are and your style, shoes can transform you your mind, body, and soul. There is no better form of selfexpression than what we wear and how we wear it.
There is something to be said about girls who wear wild and funky colors and prints and those girls who prefer to take a basic approach. Sporty shoes say that you are active and down to earth. Being active is your style. You are not afraid to show off your girly side with ballerina flats. Girls have tried to hide their girly side to display strength. You are more powerful than you think and wearing your ballerinas shows that you are.

Let's Laugh Out Loud "Be positive and laugh at everything". - Alexandra Roach There are so many reasons why you should laugh. It is no secret that laughter is the best medicine. But there are other benefits to laughing. When you laugh after hearing a funny story, you are reducing levels of stress. Being stressed out is not good for you. Protect your health with a good laugh.
When you are sick, laughter can help you heal faster. Have an exam on Friday, but you can't seem to sleep? Call up the bestie and laugh out loud. Laughing helps your body produce a hormone to help sleep. GS loves the next reason to laugh. It encourages creativity. It is considered a "creative thinking exercise". Finally, it helps brings two people together.
Friendships have been formed from laughing out loud.
Goofing Off is Really Good! I'm a little goofy sometimes; I can get a little wacky. -Tamala Jones
Step away from studying and chores, and goof off. It is okay to be silly once in a while. You can waste thirty minutes to an hour and do something fun. Call up your friends and do something really silly like make faces on Snapchat. Girls just really want to have fun.

Dear Miss A.J., I had a rough week, my mom is getting on my nerves and I just want to run away at times. The other day, I thought maybe I should just pack a bag and leave, but I’m not sure where I would go. I just want to be a teenager and sometimes I feel like my mother is smothering me. What do you think I should do? Ciara Dear Ciara, I’m sorry to read that you had a rough week. I can relate to your frustrations. My mom sometimes smothers me, but I know that she wants the best for me. The one thing that we (you and I) don’t understand is the hard job of being a parent. I see my mom stressed all the time about how she’s going to make sure that I have the things that I need and want. Sometimes, I think about packing a bag and leaving home, which, seems to be an easy way out. Try to put yourself in your mom’s shoes and understand the responsibility she has of providing for her family. We all have a job to do. Our jobs as kids is to go to school and get good grades. Our parent's job is to work and put a roof over our heads, food on the table, and pay the bills. I recommend that you sit down and talk to your mom and maybe she will not smother you so much, if you just tell her how you feel. I hope this helps. We are not perfect. We just try to do the best we can. Please feel free to write me anytime. Miss Aj (GS teen columnist)

Beat Shyness and Boost Confidence Do you feel shy and awkward at school, at the mall, or at a sleepover? Does your shyness and awkwardness make you feel alone and lonely? Are you the type of girl that has a hard time connecting with other girls? You probably constantly think that you are weird and awkward because you are not like Kimberly, who is outgoing, fun, and has a dozen of friends. We have a secret we want to share with you. Most girls feel just like you. Some girls have learned how to quiet some of the thoughts in their mind. Today, is the day, that you hush up your inner conversations. We don't want you to be like Kimberly, we want you to be the best you you can be. This starts with becoming more bold, more fearless, and more brave without changing who you are.

Learn to accept you for you. You don't have to be perfect to be liked. It is okay to make mistakes. We all make mistakes. It is a part of growing up. You deserve a break. You are useful. Your value doesn't equal to perfection. Your negative self-talk is your own negative thoughts, speaking to you. Stop calling yourself "pathetic", "stupid", etc. Catch your thoughts. If you find yourself saying bad things about yourself, pause it. Turn the thoughts into positive ones. I am not "stupid", I am bold, fearless, and brave. Take it one step at a time. You can't change the way you feel by tomorrow. What you can do tomorrow is start smiling at someone that walks pass you in the school hallway, give a friend or even a stranger a compliment, or ask a question to start a conversation (at lunch , for example: "How are the fries today").
PAGE 25
Secret Tips 1. Fake it 'till you make it - You may not feel confident, but they don't need to know it. Here is your chance to be in your own movie. Become an actress of confidence until it makes you feel more confident. 2. Look outside the window not inside - Get out of your own head! Now! Stop trying to have a convo with yourself about if you are dancing right at a party. Enjoy the moment and smile. Smiling is contagious. 3. Laugh, Laugh, Laugh - especially at yourself. You drop your books in the hallway. Guess what, just laugh, and move on. 4. Being helpful, always works - Michelle is having a bad day and you see it. Maybe you should offer to help her decorate her locker. It can be something as small as a compliment or a smile. Positivity can spread and will make you feel better. We are cheering for you. We believe in you. You can do this.
What You Can Do Always think the best never the worst Remember your glitches and quirks make you priceless and special Learn to laugh at yourself Give eye contact when talking to other girls Let the words of others flow down your ears: listen. Even if you don't like what they are saying. Don't let that no get you down. We all have gotten it. Learn from it.

A Smile is Your
BEST ACCESSORY BY: CHELSEA JACOBS
Have you ever seen someone wearing something so cute that you find yourself thinking about it days later? Let’s say you see omeone at the mall with a red purse. You may not talk to that girl, but you notice her bold choice of accessories. You might think to yourself that you should get a red purse, and throughout the next few days, catch yourself thinking of how cute that purse was and wondering where you might be able to get one. A week later, you're getting dressed and all you can think of is how cute a red purse would look with your outfit. That is the power of accessories —they make people take notice. The accessories you choose to wear can say a lot about you. There are people who you may never get to talk to that will notice your accessories and what they say about you.
They can tell that you prefer boots instead of flip-flops or that bracelets are your go-to accessories. When you choose your accessories, you are choosing the picture of yourself that you want to show others that day. With this in mind, suddenly picking out the right accessories seems important! What do you want people to remember about you? What if your style changes?
WHEN SOMEONE SEES YOU SMILING, IT REMINDS THEM THAT THEY SHOULD BE SMILING...
Without even meeting you, someone may be able to tell that you like the color pink or that lace is your favorite fabric. Is there any one accessory that could go with everything? The answer is probably much simpler than you were expecting. A smile is your best accessory. Yes, a smile. Remember the girl and her red purse? A smile works the same way. When someone sees you smiling, it reminds them that they should be smiling, and this is something that will occupy their thoughts for the next few days. In the same way that you would notice how cute a girl looks with her purse or shoes, others will notice how happy you look when you are wearing a smile. In the same way that you may want to find some similar accessories to someone you noticed that has cute style, others will want to

find a way to look as happy as you do—all because of your choice of the best accessory! There are people you may never meet or even talk to that will only see you for a few moments—what do you want them to remember about you? Sure, they’ll remember your bright pink pants, or your oversized sweater. But if you’re also wearing a smile, they’ll remember that. No matter what your style, a smile is the perfect accessory to brighten any outfit. Preppy, hippy, punkrock … a smile goes with anything and everything. Bonus points: it’s free and contagious. Try to name another accessory that’s both free and that you can share with everyone you see—it’s not possible! You are beautiful and uniquely you, and your accessories should reflect that! So the next time you’re getting dressed, make sure you remember you very best accessory—a smile that is beautifully and uniquely you.
Beauty is power; a smile is its sword. If you have only one smile in you give it to the people you love. Let my soul smile through my heart and my heart smile through my eyes, that I may scatter rich smiles in sad hearts. The greatest self is a peaceful smile, that always sees the world smiling back.

NO COMPLAINING CHALLENGE
boo hoo
Someone once said that if you don't like something change it. If the thing you don't like doesn't change try changing your attitude. You may not realize how often you complain because it has become a habit. Like most habits, you do it so much it becomes invisible. You complain about school, your homework, your little brother, your friends, your parents, blah, blah, and blah. Don't worry. Complaining is normal. No one really jumps up for joy to go to school or work. Grumbling has even helped a few of us get through the day. But complaining too much makes you come off as a complainer - that no one wants to be around. Less complaining can help those around you because you will make them positive and bring positivity into your life. So try not complaining for 6 days to see if it doesn't change your outlook on life.
! s y a d 6 r o F
Day 1 Walk out the house with a positive attitude today. If you feel an urge to complain about something don't. If you do happened to spit out a complain, give it a positive spin. A cheer coach is a great idea. Your sister, brother, or friend can be your cheer coach. They can help you not fall into complaining.
DAY 2 Allow yourself to vent some today. You don't want to keep it in your head - prevent a thought build up. If you find yourself complaining about a certain friend it might be time to reconsider that friendship today. DAY 3 Mediate or yoga today. What a great way to be mindful. Both help you calm down. You can think more when its quiet.
Day 4 Get on the no judging train today. You maybe complaining about a person because they are not like you or think like you do. So today, find out more about that person. Listen to their story. They maybe going through something that is why they are not hanging out as much. DAY 5 Today is a fun and creative day. Get out your journal and write down some of the things you are grateful for. Like a shopping list. You may discover that some of your complaints were silly. DAY 6 Take care of yourself today. Do something just for you. A happy you means a new frame of mind and less complaints.
De-clutter Your Room in 4 Simple & Fun Steps This is the perfect time to clean up that mess! So why not take today to get your room smile-perfect! So today is Cleaning Day! We are here to help you plan the day by giving you simple and fun tips to finally get de-cluttered. We have provide you with 4 simple steps. LET’S CLEAN!
1. MAP IT OUT -
It can be a new room for you! Have you seen the dream bedroom on a television show? Let’s begin by grabbing a piece of paper and sketch out how you want your room to look like. SFG suggests you start with the basics like a “Fashion Space”, “Study Space”, “Sleeping Space”, etc. Create spaces according to your favorite activities. For more fun add a “Music Space”. It is your space, your personality.
2. OUT WITH OLD -
Before you do anything, go through all of your stuff. Sort everything into three piles: keep, trash, and give away. Keep everything you want to keep, trash junk, recycle papers, give stuff away to family/friends, and donate the other stuff to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.
3. TIME FOR WATER -
Time to pick up all the clothes off the floor. Dirty clothes go into a laundry basket. Don’t have one? Trash bags and pillow cases work great too. Hang up all your clean clothes. This maybe tricky because you may not know which ones are dirty or clean. SFG suggests if you don’t know wash them all.
4. GET ORGANIZED -
Get some containers, empty boxes, etc. You already created piles in Step 2. By this step you should only have your keep pile. Now break down the stuff you want to keep. Hair stuff goes into a hair container, pencils go into a supply box, etc. SFG wants you to know everything has a home. Now look at the map you created and start creating your idea room. Place items in your “Spaces’.

What to say
when...
In a stressful situation? Pause, Stop! Don't say another word until you read this.
We've all had to put our hands over our months at some point in our lives (we are not talking about being shocked about some juicy news). You find yourself in a situation that causes you some stress or the right words are not coming out of your mouth. Ten minutes later, sitting on your bed, you are thinking, "OMG! Did did the words come out of my mouth". You don't have to feel like you have let yourself down anymore. GS has tips to handle your motormouth moments. Ready for your tongue to stop getting you in trouble...
YOU ARE ANGRY When you get angry you start talking fast or it gets high-pitched. You ever wonder why? It is because your muscles tense up when you are angry. When someone has made you angry or hurt your feelings, you tend to lash out to whomever causes it and maybe those in your path. Your adrenaline is up. Your mood at this point can lead you to say things you will forever regret.
DO
You control your own emotions. Your friend, parent, or anyone else can wind you up to the point you ready to go off. However, you ultimately have the keys to get you really angry or not.
YOUR ARE UPSET The mood of anger can have an effect on your mind, body, and soul. Being upset does the same thing to your body as being angry. It becomes hard to think because your brain releases chemicals that causes it do this. You don't want to make it worse by saying the first thing that pops in your head.
DO Put a smile on your face anyway. Let them wonder what you are feeling or thinking. They won't even know that you are upset.
Breathe, breathe, and breathe. Repeat. Do this before you speak. The air you take in will help your body calm down.
DON'T
Say forget it, her, them, etc. No name calling or telling the other person where they can go, in your highpitched voice. You could turn an innocent situation to a bad one. Forget to consider the other person's feelings and their viewpoint before you open your mouth.
Step away or let the other person know you need a minute to think about what happened. Putting your self on a mental time out can save a friendship. Silence is really golden. Avoid causing problems you can't take back.
DON'T Overact... It is never as bad as it may seem. Look at the situation from a different angle. You are your best coach. Give yourself some good advice just like you would give Jen if she asks. Stay in a situation if you don't want to. Maybe look at the issue another day. It is okay to walk away. Think about crying. Sometimes when we get upset we produce tears. This won't solve the problem. This probably would give another person ammo to pursue the argument. People would love to get to you and make you cry. They love the control.
YOU HAVE A SECRET We all get that temptation to tell a secret; its very tempting. You will get praise for keeping secrets cause they are really hard to keep hidden especially to your bestie. Your friends may try to trick you to tell. But if you tell it could end badly for you and the person who told you the secret.
DO
Say, "I can't tell you" or "It is none of your business". However you want to say it. "You would want me to keep your secret". Your friends will give you kudos. Make it clear that nothing they can do will change your mouth from opening. You are not going to be a gossiper but a secret keeper.
DON'T
YOUR ARE NERVOUS Going on and on - babbling - when you are nervous is not unusual. Words you thought you would never use comes out of your mouth, especially when you are under pressure. You may exaggerate or lie when backed into a corner. You are making the hole bigger and bigger - all because you can't keep your mouth shut.
DO
You control your own emotions. Your friend, parent, or anyone else can wind you up to the point you ready to go off. However, you ultimately have the keys to get you really angry or not. Make the other person help you without them even knowing. You can calm yourself down instantly by asking them questions. While they are answering your questions, your nervousness levels are decreasing; allowing you time to compose yourself.
DON'T
Use the words OMG! Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, but no, what had happened was...
Use a secret to be popular or be liked. Your peers can label you as a "sell-out". You don't want to be known for running your mouth which make you unpopular. Walk around smiling because you know a secret. You have better things to do than have a following because they want to know the secret.
I have often regretted my speech, never my silence. PAGE 38
KEY TO PROBLEM SOLVING
LET THE CREATIVE JUICES FLOW Daydreaming is a sure sign that our creative juices are flowing. Just like your brain processes creativity and imagination, it processes daydreaming the same way. Have you ever noticed that those who stare at the stars often are very artsy.
You are sitting in class and you find yourself somewhere else in your head, it is a good thing. You magically stumble on an answer to a question you had for months. It allows you to also run through scenarios of situations in your head.

t t e LIGHT BULB MOMENTS
You daydream and then you get that moment where you realized something important. Thank daydreaming for this. One day your daydreaming could pay off; the next big idea in our head could make you famous or rich.
When we let our mind wander, we tend to forget about our problems, which can lead to less stress. Happy thoughts (like the pizza you going to have for lunch) instantly corrects your mood and also puts a smile on your face.
YOUR A SMART GIRL You are having a hard time focusing on homework, quiz, or test. Your mind seems to be going in a million directions. This is could be because your brain capacity is high to focus on one thing. You tend to wander off to another subject...even now as you read this you have drifted off.

Your Road to Being Happy TIPS FROM MYLIE Let Go of NegativityÂ
Live in the Moment
Someone may have done you wrong or said something about you to other girls that wasn't true. Learn to forgive and let go. You will see this opportunity of letting go as a challenge, but is also an opportunity to build you up. You are imperfectly perfect. Know that none of us are perfect. Be more cheerful about your life and future. You have the ability to accomplish many things, if you let go of bad thoughts or people who are not here for your best interest.
Have you ever missed something on a show you were watching on TV and you took the remote and rewound it back to see it again? Using this method is a great way to see something you may have missed or found interesting to watch it again. However, this only applies to TV land. In your own life, don't replay negative events or worry about that test you have next week. You got this! Throw your life a party because you deserve it. Be grateful, for each moment of every day, even when you are having a bad hair day.
Don't sweat the little things. I am prescribing you to take plenty of "worry vacations" where you train your brain to not worry. Accept and love you for the unique gifts you bring to all those around you. To be positive, surround yourself with positive friends and energy.Â

Come on Get Happy
Serve and Be KindÂ
Happiness is a choice. You can choose to be happy. There's going to be stress in life, but it's your choice whether you let it affect you or not. Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.
Everyone should be treated with kindness. It will make you feel better inside. The lesson you will learn from this is that you will feel good after having a positive experience with others. The words you speak about other girls should be positive. Positivity attracts positivity. This means when you speak positively of others, you will attract more positivity. When you say you are listening, really listen. Being attentive and mindful is a plus. Practive being generous and giving something to a friend without expecting something back. Show them your pearly whites. Smile more even to strangers. Watch how it will create a chain reaction. Smiling is contagious. Someone once said, a smile is the best accessory you can wear.Â
PAGE 43
Choose a Healthy Lifestyle Go to be early. Get enough sleep. Positive mood can be linked to getting enough sleep. It also improves your self-esteem and helps you solve problems. Try turning off the TV; maybe earlier than usual. Research has shown that for every hour of TV you watch, you cut 22 minutes of your life expectancy. Eating properly can also make you feel good. You are what you eat. So eating the right things can have a direct effect on your mood and energy. Not eating can also put you in a cranky mood. Don't get a snickers, try some fruit or nuts (if you are not allergic). Watch for overeating and try practicing healthy self-control. It is not a bad idea to put on those sneakers and go for a walk. Sweating can help the body purify and helps produce engines which help to prevent stress, relieve sadness, and positively improve your overall mood. I can't say it enough. Laugh more! Laughter is the best medicine. It can have the same effect as exercising. I, myself, practice deep breathing with my yoga. My body and mind becomes connected. I feel more calm and at peace after a yoga session or even after a walk.
Nourish Your SpiritÂ
Well, meditation can calm the nervous system. Meditation can also bring you joy and peace into your life. Isn't that something to get happy about?
Become a Nature Lover Take some time out for yourself every day to recharge your mind, body, and soul. Find a quiet place outside and enjoy it. Find somewhere where you can feel at peace without the pressures of your life. Fresh air does a body good. I often like to look at the sunshine. It has a positive effect on my mood. I think how great is to be alive and free! At night, try calming down for 10 minutes before bed and again in the morning when you get up for school. Not only will this create a positive habit, it will you help you meet any challenges of the day. Just like you, natural beauty, is wonderful. Appreciate it!
'Cause I am
Always be honest with yourself. It will make you feel free inside. When you are honest with others you will build long-lasting friendships. Creativity is the key here. So get creative. Challenge yourself to learn new things to keep your mind a in a positive state. I said it earlier, live in the moment and let the creativity flow. You will be happy about your masterpiece because you created it. Why not expand your divine gifts with learning something new? Mediation is also something I do often.
Happy!
Research has shown that 10 minutes of meditation a day can lead to your concentration improving. Remember how you had a hard time focusing in Math class.
